A Detestable (Birth)Day

Amadea took a seat at the end of one of the long Hufflepuff tables, the excitement she had felt from the beginning of the day long gone. The day was supposed to be one of those wonderful days that went exactly as Amadea imagined, but it hadn’t gone anything like she had planned. Maybe it was because she always dreamt up unrealistic fantasies of what could possibly happen and then when reality hit, it was a letdown. But for some reason, Amadea felt as though today should have been perfect. She wondered what had ruined it.
Only hours earlier, she had sat down at the very same table, almost in the exact same spot, with excitement coursing through her body. She carried a plate piled full of wonderful breakfast foods. Even though she didn’t usually have huge, unhealthy meals, she decided to splurge for the day. After all, it was her birthday. Digging in, she had only just begun to eat when the daily mail flew in. Amadea was excited; she loved receiving mail from her parents and her sister though her sister hadn’t sent any mail except signing her name on Amadea’s Christmas card. She watched as the owls swooped done, dropping mail left and right to many students at her table. In an instant, they were all flying away, leaving Amadea with nothing.
At first she was confused. Had she gotten the date wrong? Maybe she was a day early. After checking with another Hufflepuff (and probably scaring them with her insanity) she became even more perplexed. It was definitely June 17th, and yet there was no message. Not from her mother, not from her father. She wasn’t half surprised that her sister hadn’t sent anything, even though Amadea thought their argument was petty enough to not miss big events like this. Was it even that big of an event? It was her birthday. It wasn’t like she was turning some groundbreaking age. She was only turning twelve. She wasn’t becoming a teenager or an adult and she still felt the same as she did when she was eleven. Maybe her parents just hadn’t thought it was a big enough event to send anything for.
Who was she kidding though? Amadea knew her parents loved her a lot and marked every one of her birthdays with a special event. She could vividly remember each celebration she had for her birthday with the cake and presents and laughter. It wasn’t like them to forget it, and Amadea couldn’t help but have a sinking feeling that something might have been wrong. She was both confused and hurt that she hadn’t received anything from them, and then felt guilty for being so self-centered. It wasn’t their fault that they had forgotten. Maybe they hadn’t forgotten. Maybe the owl was just a day late, or it lost the letter. Maybe it was still on it’s way. Maybe...maybe...Amadea trailed off her thought, sinking into a further pit of depression. It wasn’t like her parents to cease communications, but that’s what it had been feeling like for the past few weeks. Ever since their split, things had been different.
Removing herself from her depressing thoughts, she ate the rest of her breakfast slowly. She ended up not eating the majority of her food; the events from earlier had already ruined her appetite. Now, as Amadea sat at the table with her dinner in front of her, she couldn’t fathom putting it into her mouth. All she could think about was the terrible day.
She had walked around the grounds, hoping to get some fresh air and clear her head. While doing so, she had noticed people running around frantically to and from the Small Hall. Curiosity got the best of her and she walked into the room, looking around. She recognized her spritely, energetic redheaded friend immediately. Ami was working with some other students in preparation for something. Then it clicked with Amadea. They were preparing for Mia’s birthday party, which was taking place the next day. Even though Amadea was excited for it, she couldn’t help but feel a small pang of sadness that they weren’t setting something up for her. She immediately felt guilty; Mia was a lovely person that deserved a wonderful party. She just wished someone cared enough about her to plan something for her.
Amadea continued to remind herself that she hadn’t really made her birthday a public thing. She hated when all of the attention was on her, which was why she avoided having large birthday parties or telling everyone that it was her special day. She always felt narcissistic and self centered, and couldn’t feel more awkward at parties when people sang a song to her. That’s why she didn’t tell anyone, and that was why no one was making a big deal about it.
Amadea’s emotions battled each other for the rest of the day. She knew she had no reason to feel disappointed or sad because no one had said happy birthday to her. She knew her parents were just busy and they probably hadn’t had the chance to look at the calendar. She knew that her sister was mad. She knew that she hated being the center of attention. But at the same time she knew she was sad and disappointed because her parents would never forget her birthday. She was sad because her sister was mad and didn’t send any card. She was angry with herself for wanting attention because she knew she would just cower and hide in her fear if she was made the center of attention.
She spooned a bite of spaghetti into her mouth, feelings still swirling around as a jumbled mess. She wished she could just stop thinking and stop having these conflicting emotions about things that were so pathetic. She felt like a teenager, and she wasn’t even thirteen yet! Students all around her were laughing and talking, oblivious to the fact that 1: it was her birthday and 2: she was in the worst mood. Her thoughts were so depressing she was surprised they weren't infecting all of the happiness that was bubbling around her. If she heard one more person laugh, Amadea was sure she was going to burst into tears. Sighing, Amadea picked up her plate of uneaten food and disposed of it. Taking one more look at the Great Hall, which she now felt a deep hatred towards, she turned on her heel and walked away. Hopefully tomorrow would be a better day.[/font]
