Sybil had looked around the Sorting Hall in awe. Being one of the more wealthy families in England, she had seen some truly remarkable architecture, but she had never seen the likes of Hogwarts. She had heard about it from her mother and father, with them being a wizard and witch themselves, but she didn't know what to expect until now. She watched the woman at the front as she called out names. She wasn't taken aback when the hat placed upon their head seemed to speak to them, and focused on her surroundings as she waited her turn. She noticed four different tables, all adorned in the house colors, and secretly hopped she'd get Gryffindor. She was always told red brough out her eyes more, and that was good for business. She shook her head, clearing her thoughts of anything professional. The hat got to the G's, and she waited eagerly, until...

"Greathouse, Sybil." She got up a little too fast, her chair squeaking. She grimaced, and could feel eyes on her. She remembered her confidence techniques, and pushed her shoulders back, kept her chin up, but not so much to look snobbish, and gave a confident close-lipped smile as she walked to the front. She sat on the stool, and the rough material of the hat was placed on her head. In her ear, she could hear a voice, and was startled at the suddenness, but did not let it show.

"Ah, yes, let's see. Sybil Greathouse. I remember your parents coming up here. Fine Ravenclaw students, they were. All brains, but very stubborn and prudish. Nevertheless, I see a spark of rebellion in you. You wish to be different from your parents. You want to be happy, and carefree. That's a touch of Hufflepuff in you. I also see the fierce desire and determination to do well, beat your peers out, and make your parents proud. Gryffindor, that is. But there is also a deep sadness, and anger at yourself for not being good enough. Now that's a poor attitude if I ever saw one. Slytherin there... But overwhelmingly, you analyze your situations, and plan accordingly to let your other traits shine. Thus, there's only one true match for you, not that I had any doubt. "

And with that, the Sorting Hat yells out your house to the hall.

"RAVENCLAW"

Sybil's mouth dropped open slightly, but her heart warmed when she saw the Ravenclaw house. Some were clapping politely, trying not to look rowdy, whilst some were standing and clapping or cheering. She smiled slightly as the Sorting Hat was taken off her head. As she walked over to the Ravenclaw table, she said a silent thank you to the Sorting Hat, and hopes she would find where she belonged here.

With love~

Celynne stared around at the Great Hall, marveling at the floating candles and the bewitched ceiling, not to mention the food. She had never tasted anything like it.
Then again, it was magic. She shouldn't have been surprised.

As names were called and houses shouted, Cel ceased to feast her eyes on the wonders of magic, turning her attention to the strange hat at the front of the Hall in case her name was called. Nervously she began to think rapidly. What should I do when my name is called? I do wonder what the sorting hat will think of me, and what will happen when I wear it. Will it take long to sort me, or short like some of the others? What if--

"Flores, Celynne!"

Apprehensiveness biting at the edges of her nerves, Cel made her way up to the stool. Every footstep seemed too loud in her ears, the click of her shoes echoing in the high-ceilinged room. As she seated herself on the old, rickety stool in front of all the other students, the girl felt the stiff old fabric of the Sorting Hat nestled atop her hair. Immediately the Hat's voice began to murmur in her mind, causing her to nearly jump out of her seat.

Hmm, muggle-born, are you? the Sorting Hat muttered. Cel was about to acknowledge the notion before it interrupted, causing her shock to spike. No, no. Not at all. Makes sense. Ah, didn't know, did you? Anyway... hmm, we don't usually receive students with such... American minds. Not a Hufflepuff, though, no matter how casual most of them are. This one is too... closed off. The girl took offense, blinking rapidly a couple of times, and the Hat chuckled. You've been through your travail, eh? Perhaps a Gryffindor? But no, too shy. Slytherin might fit... I do see enough cunning in you... but no. You have spent more time than most eleven-year-olds in a university, after all. A thirst for simply knowing-- knowing all-- is apparent.

"Ravenclaw!" the Sorting Hat bellowed into the Hall aloud, and the stiff fabric was raised off her head as Cel hopped off the stool, beginning to walk to the blue-robed students who had erupted in cheering. Her pace quickened as she saw the grinning faces and welcoming arms.

As she seated herself, she smiled at the welcome around her, thinking that she would very much like this school.

So this is Hogwarts.

Lucy walked with a bounce in her step with the other first-years. The train ride had been plenty exciting in and of itself, but this room really captured the atmosphere of the day. "I can't believe I'm going to be sorted into my very own house," she whispered to herself as the throng of students surged toward the front of the room. Those who were already sorted were joking and laughing with each other, some in the Gryffindor house playfully rough-housing while a few Slytherins pointed at some of the first-years in the crowd and whispered behind their hands.

Lucy took all of this in without processing it. What she was really interested in was the house that she would get. Because of this, the grandeur of the architecture, the enchanted ceiling and candles, all of it was completely lost on her. Her eyes were laser focused on a dingy old hat on a stool at the front of the room. The Sorting Hat, she thought to herself with a grin. I can't wait to find out what I'm going to be. Dad was a Hufflepuff, but I like learning more than he did. I think I might be a Ravenclaw. She glanced at the students around her. Some looked like they were going to be sick. She laughed under her breath. Who had time to be nervous when they were probably living the best day of their life?

The professor began calling names. Lucy groaned internally when she realised that they were calling names alphabetically by last name. It's going to take forever to get to my name! She impatiently drummed her fingertips on her leg, the action hidden by the giant sleeve of her robe. She felt her wand in her pocket and grinned. I'm going to be learning real magic soon. I can't wait. Her excited energy practically hummed around her, and a few students edged away as she began rocking slightly from foot to foot.

Finally, finally, her name was called.

"O'Sullivan, Lucy."

Lucy jumped forward and hopped onto the seat. She grinned out at the crowd, fancying herself the centre of attention for these brief moments. She looked out at each table as she waited for the Sorting Hat to be placed on her head. It seemed to deliberate with the other students, carefully choosing the house and muttering to itself, so she was shocked when she felt the hat barely skim her hair before it bellowed, "HUFFLEPUFF," without one single snarky comment.

Lucy was absolutely delighted. The Hufflepuff table whooped, grinned, and waved her over. Without a glance backwards, she joined her new house.

Asteria watched as her fellow first years came and went, sorted into their new houses. She wondered which house she'd be in. Her mother was in Gryffindor and her father was in Slytherin ,something her family would often joke about due to the rivalry between the two houses. Asteria didn't believe it mattered what house she was put in, but still she was curious nonetheless. "Hana, Asteria!" Asteria was shaken from her thoughts as the professor called her name. Slowly, she made her way through the other students and to the stool with the hat on it.

She watched as the professor lifted up the hat and she took her place on the stool. Asteria couldn't help but feel embarrassed, being sorted in front of the whole school was huge in her opinion. "Ah, another Hana!" Asteria gave a little jump as the hat began to speak. "Yes,yes I remember how much trouble your Father gave me. Slytherin or Ravenclaw, oh yes, and the witty, witty remarks in that head of his." Asteria gave a small smile, her dad did tell her about his sorting when she was younger. "Oh, but your mother, she was easy to sort, hmm. Gryffindor just like her father before her. But what about you,eh?"

"Intriguing, just like your father you are difficult to place, although not as difficult I might add." Asteria gulped at the comment. "Plenty of brains I see, just like both parents. But those brains are matched by your boldness hmm.." 'Anything is fine really, doesn't matter.' Asteria thought.
"Doesn't matter eh,  well let's see let's see....I see  great potential for you in Ravenclaw, no doubt there. You would be a welcomed young witch HOWEVER." The hat shouted. "I see even greater potential for you in.....GRYFFINDOR!!"
Relieved that it was over at last, Asteria gently removed the hat, placed it back on the stool, and hurried toward the cheering Gryffindor table to take her seat amongst her new peers.

Moving with the horde of first years into the Great Hall, Phedra let her eyes wander over the decor and architecture, in complete awe of the scene. She thought back to the letters Pavlina had sent when she was a student here, excitedly claiming how nice the school was. Candles floated in mid-air giving the room a tranquil atmosphere, and possibly Phedra's favorite feature, the ceiling was magically enchanted to compose of clouds and constellations. It really was as beautiful as her family said it would be.

Her chest pounding excitedly, Phedra moved between the two middle tables and stood with the rest at the front of the Great Hall. A wizard, named Professor Anderson, was standing next to a big, old hat, which Phedra knew specifically to be the Sorting Hat.

Her family had told her that this famous hat would sing a song every new year, and once placed upon a student's head would then place them into their respective houses loosely based on personality. And more curious, Phedra thought, the hat is never wrong. After the hat finished its song, Phedra clapped politely along with the others.

The Sorting of the first years then began, with the calling of the first name.

Knowing her name would be one of the last to be called, Phedra began to get antsy and let her mind wander. I hope I'm placed in Ravenclaw, she thought, mindlessly playing with the fabric of her robes. Not that Slytherin would be bad, I suppose, but I'd like to be with like-minded people... Hufflepuff... heavens no!

"Stavrou, Phedra!" yelled out the professor suddenly, making Phedra jump a little. She moved slowly to the stool on the stage, turned, and sat. All eyes were on her. The professor placed the hat onto her head, and it was surprisingly heavy and hung a bit over her eyes.

"Ah, yes. Another Stavrou. I know your family well," spoke the Sorting Hat, its voice booming in Phedra's ears. "Your sister, Pavlina, was one of the brightest witches in her year. I can sense that overwhelming need for learning in you.

Or perhaps, will you be a Slytherin, like your father and uncles? Your potential will be undeniable in Salazar's house! You have a great, ambitious desire to prove yourself. And, goodness! Is that boldness of yours a hint of Gryffindor?"

I'd like Ravenclaw, please. She bit her lip.

"Fine... Very well. A creative and strong mind such as yours has already determined your fate. Along with most of your family before you, I shall place you in--

RAVENCLAW!" Yelled the hat, and Phedra gave a sigh of relief. Smiling the most she had in a long time, she made her way to the table of blue and bronze and sat with her new family for the next seven years.

Wini was antsy as she sat, waiting for her name to be called out. Since her last name started with a G, she knew her name would be called out sooner rather than later. The small brunette was nervous to say the least. She had never seen anything like she was seeing right now. She couldn't peel away her blue eyes from the floating candles. Why were they floating like that?

Then her name was called and she sprang out of her seat, a little too quickly for her liking. She sat on the stool timidly, looking anywhere but the sea of faces that watched back. Then the large hat was placed on her head and her whole body tensed while her face scrunched up.

The hat talked. It talked. Wini fought the urge to run away, instead listening as it spoke.

"Hmm, a muggle born. And a tough one at that. Let's see what we have here..."

Don't faint. Don't faint. Wait, it said my house. What did it say?

Wini opened her eyes to a cheering room as the hat was removed from her head and she was nudged forward slightly. What house did it say? But she didn't have to guess, instead walking towards the table that seemed to be screaming at her to come forward and take a seat.

It was Gryffindor in all of it's glory. Those that were not first years had a yellow and red patch on their robes, causing Wini to smile at it's warm colors. Now everything felt right. She was home.

Today was one of those days where the slightest hint of provocation on anyone's part was enough to set the young boy on edge. He was surrounded by new faces, so many new faces, all of which had varying degrees of unease written plainly for all to see. Dorian, on the other hand, was a study of calm channelled through a strong desire to see this over and done with so he could finally get himself settled in and officially start the school year. The thought that stood to the fore of his mind was doing all he could to maybe please his mother in some small way that would make her finally acknowledge him as the son that she loved dearly. It was all he could do to keep his focus as he crept along slowly in line behind the other students on his way to the lone stool at the front of the hall.

"Dorian Gray!"

At the sound of his name being bellowed, he scowled, hardening his features and making his way to the stool. Now facing the room, he took a short moment to scan each House's table to gauge the type of people that occupied each. There wasn't much he could tell about the groups as a whole, but from what he saw of the kids individually he assumed he would be joining them at the Slytherin table shortly. They shared his tendency to scowl and glare a lot, just as they were doing now while all eyes were on him. He mirrored their expression and focused on that particular table while the Sorting Hat was placed atop his head.

The disquieting silence came to an abrupt halt when a scratchy voice from above started mumbling to itself. The only words he caught at this point were "bad temper" and "brilliant". Well, those were obvious traits he acknowledged himself. Nothing out of the ordinary so far. "Every string in my leather body screams that you're a Slytherin, but then I see something else that makes me wonder." Dorian was just about ready to lose his mind if this hat didn't hurry up and say what he expected to hear so he could get up and leave. "Why do you hide who you really are? Ah... So it's your mother you take after eh? I remember her well. One of my easiest Slytherin placements. But you... I get a different feeling from you young lad." The boy was about ready to tear the hat off and leave, knowing what its words meant.

If he was not to be placed in Slytherin as the hat clearly just struck as an option, then where did he belong? He didn't have long to wait to learn the answer as the hat shouted "You will do well in GRYFFINDOR!" Rowdy cheer erupted from the table in question as Dorian rose from the seat and quietly made his way over. So this was to be his house for the remainder of his tenure. It was highly unexpected, to say the least. If not Slytherin then he had expected Ravenclaw and nothing else. Gryffindor was usually reserved for those goody-two-shoes types who held illusions of chivalry and a do-no-wrong attitude. Or so he had heard.

Dorian didn't worry too much about it, however. Soon enough they would realize that they made a mistake in placing him here and the change would be made. In the meantime, the best he could hope to do was get himself settled in as best as he could and see what happened next.

Emalia thought back on the last words her siblings had spoken to her before abandoning her with the other first years.

“Lia,” Kai, the oldest said. “It doesn’t matter where you get put okay?”

“But it would be cooler if she got into Ravenclaw. Then we’d all be in different houses!” Maleko whispered, nudging Luana.

“But she’s not nearly smart enough!” Luana teased loudly.

Kai rolled his eyes and put a hand on Emalia’s shoulder. “Ignore them. Don’t feel pressured. The hat will know what’s best for you.

“Emalia Kahananui.”

Emalia looked out across the big, colorful tables. Third year Luana smirked at her from the Gryffindor table. Fifth year Maleko grinned with the Slytherins. Seventh year Kai smiled reassuringly at her with the Hufflepuffs.

She tentatively took a step forward and began to walk to the sorting hat. She plopped her small frame in the seat and the hat was placed on her head.

Another Kahananui, I see. Strong, ambitious, and loyal, too. Where to put you...

Not Gryffindor. Please, Luana hates me.

Not a fan of Gryffindor, eh? Let’s see...Slytherin would suit you. You’d be able to reach your full potential.

Emalia’s heart fluttered in her chest and she looked out at Kai again. He gave a little wave.

But I see your heart yearns for a different kind of success. Loyal, for sure, and kind to those in need...You have a strong will and a good soul. Well, I suppose it can only be...

“HUFFLEPUFF!”

The Hufflepuffs leapt up, cheering, and Kai was the loudest among them. Maleko gave a little clap, and Luana rolled her eyes. Emalia leapt off her stool to join them.

“Now, form a line and follow me.”

They stumble out of the room, with wobbly knees. Mardella is stood behind a group of shorter boys, who aren't any use in hiding her lanky beanpole figure from the - oh Merlin - awaiting eyes.

The stories didn’t quite get it right, she notes with surprise, ash on her tongue.

The line quietens as the Great Hall of Hogwarts comes into full view. It’s beautiful. Millions of candles floating above their heads, bobbing along in languid formations, making intricate shapes. Below them, four long tables stretching nearly the whole length of the hall, where hundreds of students seem to be sitting, faces turning towards them curiously. Each of the tables are flooded with glittering gold goblets and plates, tureens and deep bowls. At the top of the room, is another long table, perpendicular to the students’ tables, and filled with teachers.

“Look!” Someone hisses, barely above a whisper.

Mardella’s eyes flick upwards.

Where there perhaps should have been towering arches and beams spanning the ceiling, there is instead, the sky. Maybe there is no ceiling? She imagines Da would kill for that enchantment on even an wooden spoon. Above, the stars are just beginning to show themselves in the fading light, a faint flicker here and there, as the dark creeps across the horizon.

With each step forward, the noise in the hall dims until they come to a stop in silence, like the whole hall is holding its breath. The line comes to a halt in front of the teachers’ table and the Professor gestures for them to turn around to face the rest of the school.

She looks down quickly just as a stool is placed in the centre of the hall, and then on top of that, the rattiest, most frayed looking hat It has little patches in its rim and top, looking like it can’t decide whether to be brown, grey or black. It might have been made with felt a long time ago, but the material looks nearly completely worn away, only the lumpy looking fabric left behind.

For a few moments, it’s utterly quiet.

And then the Hat starts to sing.

Mardella shivers - there’s nothing hidden in your head the Sorting Hat can’t see? Oh, Merlin. At this point, she’ll take whatever house she gets, as long as she doesn’t have to put that on her head. She didn't even know such magic existed, let alone is used for something as mundane as allocating a House!

There’s a brief applause for the song and the first pupils are called forward.

She listens dutifully, fighting the urge to fidget with the holes in her too long jumper sleeves, poking out from beneath her robes. Imagine missing your name being called? It sends a shudder of embarrassment up her spine at even the thought.

"-SLYTHERIN!"

The number of names before her quickly gets shorter and shorter.

One boy is a bit of a hat-stall but she wishes he was more of a hat-stall, maybe a hat-stop or something equally ridiculous. The Sorting Hat’s wide mouth opens wide and then he's off the stool and to his cheering table.

Mardella’s stomach is churning by the time it announces “Bal, Seige!” as a Gryffindor.

Oh, Merlin. Why do they have to do this in alphabetical order? Why not reverse alphabetical? She feels like she’s going to throw up.

“Bram, Mardella!” She steps forward, trying her best not to trip in front of the entire school. These stupidly long noodles have to be useful for something. Oh Merlin.

The last thing she sees is the pale round faces of a billion Hogwarts students and then the brim of the ugly hat slips over her eyes.

“How rude.”

She jumps, oh, it’s started already? Oh, no. Oh no.

“What did you expect?” A voice says dryly from somewhere in her ear. “I already did my introduction.” It pauses, for a moment. “Oh, what’s this? Bram? Never had one of you here before.”

Oh, Merlin. She's not sure if this speaking/thinking goes both ways but as hard as she can thinks
- Sorry for calling you ugly! I wasn't thinking! Please don't kick me out!

“No need to screech.” The Hat hisses. If it were a person, she imagines he would be glaring. “Yes, I would. And I’d be much handsomer than that! Calm down, Bram or you'll never be off this blasted stool. Now, hush.”

Mardella sits as still as she can. Her face feels like it must be on fire. She likes this as much as the Hat seems to, probably. Oh, right, quiet. She tries to clear her mind, think of nothing, only it's really quite impossible to think absolutely nothing when you're trying so hard.

“Right.” The voice says, wryly, at last. "You're not the worst I've had under my brim, but not the best either. Hmmm...unafraid to work hard...but afraid to offend...loyal, yes, to your family, but then again, you are here, are you not? So perhaps not." She has to bite her lip at the sting of it, burning in her head. "...but brave enough to come here in spite of those loyalties..." It stops and chuckles dryly. "I suppose..."

"...better be GRYFFINDOR!"

The last word reverberates in her head and out into the Great Hall. She jumps, wrenching the Hat off. Lightheaded, Mardella heads towards the red banner, as the next name is called behind her.

The great hall had four long tables that stretched to both ends of the room. It was bustling with students. Aurelia's height gave her the advantage to glance through the sea of students, effortlessly. Towering over most girls her age, standing at 5'5, she was considered tall for an 11 year old. All around were unfamiliar faces, she knew she would have to get to know them soon. There were some students who already made some friends. Aurelia wished she could do so that easily.

Even though her mother had told her countless stories about how she went through the sorting ceremony, she was still nervous. Her mother was Ravenclaw, and father was Slytherin. She hoped to be in one of their houses. Maybe she would be able to get along better there.

"Line up, line up," a headmistress instructed. It took a while for the restless students to settle down. The first student went up and sat on a wooden stool. He shifted his legs and fumbled with his thumbs. A headmistress set a strange oversized hat on his head. The the hat began to move. Aurelia though she was seeing things until the hat began to speak. She was far behind the line and had to strain to hear the words.

"Slytherin!" The hat boomed and students in dark green coats occupying the last table cheered. The first student stood up, took of the hat, and walked to the table.

Aurelia crossed her arms, rubbing the goosebumps that refused to be rid of. She couldn't calm her jitters. As the line of students shrunk, she got more anxious. She wanted her sorting to be over soon. She was getting closer to the stage, there were only two students left before it was her turn. She rocked herself back and forth nervously while looking down on the ground.

"Bezuidenhout, Aurelia." her name was called.
"Merlin's beard!" She cursed under her breath. She took a deep breath and walked up to the stage with her chin held high. The stool rocked when she sat on it. She never been in front of so many people. She slid her trembling hand under her coat. The hat was heavy but sat comfortably when it was placed on there head.

"Ah... a Bezuidenhout, I've encountered many of you, challenging individuals. Hmm..." The hat said. It felt strange that she was talking to a hat.

"My Mother is a Ravenclaw, and my Father, a Slytherin. Is there any chance you could place me in one of those houses?" She asked pleadingly.

"Slytherin? Definitely not!" The hat objected.

"How about Ravenclaw?" She said, crossing her fingers.

"Ravenclaw, eh? Traits you you possess are of thee. However, Gryffindor it is if you seek to reach your full potential." It hat stated

"Oh, dear girl, what shall it be?" The hat urged.

She thought hard. Her mother had told her great stories of her time in Ravenclaw. Her mother also told her to take advantage of what ever opportunity she has. If Gryffindor would allow her to each her full potential, then it would be.

"Gryffindor." She blurted out.

"GRYFFINDOR!' the hat announced. The students in red coats cheered and howled.

She took of the hat and place it on the tool for the next to be sorted. She approached the long table where the cheers and hoots came from. Finally, it was over.
