Chalk and Cards
Brionna thought a lot. Though that shouldn't be a surprise given her Ravenclaw sorting. The more astounding part, was what the girl thought of. From what song to listen to, to where to do her homework, to why someone decided to wear a certain color. Her thought topic of the day? International Women's Day. She knew it was this month, and that she needed to do something to show her pride and appreciation. While the thought of socializing gave her a fright, she knew she had to do something.
The young girl loved to draw, and thought she may share this through making something to brighten others day, and show celebration for International Women's day. She went into deep thought about this, knowing she had here cards made the previous night, but felt this wasn’t enough. She decided on first, wearing something a little extra! The brunette put on a grey undershirt, with a flannel consisting of a variety of mustard yellow lines. Paired with a pair of slightly ripped blue jeans and red converse, the girl glanced at her outfit. Something was missing... That's it! After some rummaging, Brionna found a small crown, full of pale white and soft pink flowers, hints of green here and there from the leaves. The crown added a sense of girly that Brionna often lacked, bringing a small smile to her face. While she didn't like to dress up, she was appreciative of doing so every so often.
After dressing for the day, Brionna looked around for her bag, which held her paper, some sidewalk chalk, and writing utensils. After confirming said items the green eyed girl made her way outside, glancing around the empty courtyard. It was unusual, but not unheard of for the popular student hangout to be void of said students. Shrugging it off, Brionna took off her bag and set to finding a good place to begin her plan. She found a semi-smooth area and grabbed her white chalk to do an outline.
She started with a simple outline of the women’s power symbol, the female gender symbol with a fist inside. Then surrounded it with some simple flowers, still in the white outline chalk. Brionna knew she couldn’t draw people, as that was her weak point in art, but she did know how to draw silhouettes, and it was something she actually enjoyed. She drew a couple different styles of side profiles, trying to maintain different shapes to represent every race and body shape. She outlined the hair for a few, but not too much as she wanted the colors to really show there. Once finished with that, she added the final touch of words at the bottom saying a simple, “Love Yourself, Happy International Women’s Day.”
Smiling at her work, she grabbed her colors, the rarely used pinks coming out first for the centerpiece. While Brionna considered herself not too good at art, she was confident in one thing, her shading. It was what she loved best about it, the blending of colors, or even just the graphite color of her pencil, giving the image a whole new depth and meaning. She colored the outsides of the symbol a darker color, and scribbled the lighter hues in the center, before using her hand to blend the two, adding a streak of whichever was needed to balance them. After becoming satisfied with the pink colors, she added a black chalk outline, smearing some every now and then to add shadows to the image.
Once she finished, she grabbed a wipe from her bag, getting the colors off her hands as much as possible to avoid mixing the wrong colors. She decided to color the silhouettes first so she could add the flower colors accordingly to complement them better. She colored each as different as she could, trying not to copy hairstyles too much, as she wanted each to have their individualities and own quirks. Some had short hair, others had long. Some had black hair, others had red hair, or blonde hair, or brown hair. One even had dyed purple ends of her hair. In the side profiles, she didn’t add eyes, but rather drew the hair so it covered enough to seem natural and not creepy. She tried to even the tones out for the cheeks and noses, even adding freckles to some. As she added the finishing touches to a young African American girl, she beamed at her work. It had been so long since she enjoyed creating art by herself, especially with her chalk. She missed having sore hands and having to wait a week in between her art spurts for her hands to heal. The constant rubbing on the rough ground often lead to the girl having sore fingertips for a couple days, hence the week long breaks.
Still beaming down at her work, Brionna looked at her flower outlines, glad they hadn’t yet faded. She dug around from her colors, and set to work, making sure to keep bright colors, and add them where they looked best. She tried to keep clashing colors away, to have the image flow to the center, at the symbol. She rubbed her hands raw when meshing colors, and started a pile for her wipes as she switched between colors. When she was finally done, she added the black outlines, making shadows where they were needed and set her gaze on the final part.
The words at the bottom, “Love Yourself, Happy International Women’s Day.” It was cheesy, Brionna knew, but that was also her soft spot. She decided to do a simple light pink for the core of the letters, outline them in black for shadows. After some thought, she added a small crown to the “W” in “Women’s”, just for an extra touch. With her heart happy and fingers numb, she glanced at her bag. She pulled a stack of cards she had made the night prior, all of which had “Happy International Women’s Day” written on them, along with a quote from famous Women throughout history. She meant to stand next to her creation and hand them out, though a glance at the barely populated area had her wondering if she would be there a while. Nonetheless, Brionna was determined to stand there and hand out her cards and spread her enthusiasm.
