Feel free to owl me with constructive criticism or ideas, if you'd like to lend a helping hand! Stories are made to be improved upon, after all. Also, if you have an idea for a better title, please share! That's always been my weak point.

The Celestious Chronicles
Setting
The Second Realm
Complete (But May Be Added To)
WC: 2259
My story is based in a world called the Second Realm. Not the most creative name, I know, but there are reasons for that.
Roughly fifty or so years before the events of this story, the Second Realm was created by Mirage the Celestious, a creature that has a large amount of powers, one of these which is being able to attach their essence to a dimension. Because of its recent creation, it is currently in a constant state of flux and evolution, allowing repeating events to become normal, as you will see with some of the plants and animals changed by human interaction.
Population:
Reducio
The Second realm is populated by humans, yes, but only for the past seven years (from the time of the story's beginning). These humans range from ages 10 to 21, because each and every one has come from Earth through something called the Gold Mist Gate, a passageway between worlds that steals 10-14 year-olds from their planet in their sleep.
Of those who were brought through, only a third or so survived for a long period of time, and those who remain alive are classified into three groups: village-dweller, tribe-dweller, and loners.
Loners are, quite obviously, people who live on their own, or in groups of two or three. Any more and they become tribes (at least in the view of village-folk). Loners tend to be either very powerful or recently exiled from a tribe or city. They typically value strength, because the weak never survive for long on their own. Some loners are nomadic, while others have set territory they claim for themselves, often because it contains plentiful resources or is a safe haven from dangerous creatures.
Tribes are a bit more complex, but just as varied. They too form either traveling or stationary groups, depending on the skills of members and the lay of the land they find themselves in. Certain tribes tend to trade amongst one another, or with the villages, and on the other end, they also sometimes raid one another for diverse reasons, such as resources, warnings, or to drive others away. When village-dweller leave and form tribes, it is known as going "tribal".
As for villages, there are four. Sanctuary is the biggest, followed by Haven, Asylum, and Refuge. They are headed by the Magistrate in each one, and these Magistrates are led by the main one based in Sanctuary. Each village holds roughly five hundred to five thousand people each, and if you want to stay in one, you have to earn your keep, which means working. For a year after arriving at a village, you are taught how to survive in the Second Realm by people called Mentors, who are exceptionally skilled in their fields of work. Afterwards, the Magistrate assigns you a job to help keep the villages up and running. Examples include keeping watch (both at day or night), tending to the gardens or livestock, and relaying messages between villages.

Geography:
Reducio
The main events of the (first) story take place in a large forest in the Second Realm. The creator of the Realm only had time to create a small island (in relation to the world at large, which is mostly water) before she was forced to leave (see the History section). The top third of the island consists solely of a mountain range, which human settlers call the Twilight Mountains, because the sun sets behind them every night.
The forest takes up a sixth of the island, and is in the center of the lower half. It continues almost to the ocean, but soon turns into plains, then sand before reaching the water. On either side of the forest are a thick jungle and an expansive desert. The jungle is known as the DeathLands, because many of the creatures living inside of it have no problem taking care of tasty trespassers. The desert is called the ScorchLands, and many who venture into it meet their deaths through dehydration or exhaustion.
All in all, the whole of the Second Realm is quite difficult to survive in, and only certain parts are remotely safe, due to extreme conditions or deadly beasts/plants.

History:
Reducio
Fifty years ago, Mirage the Celestious created the Second Realm. She made the plants, the animals, the earth, and everything in between. Like many Celestious, she didn't interact much with others of her kind, preferring to spend her time with her creations.
However, as independant as she was, she could still become lonely. It was for this reason that Mirage created Avi, a bird-like man that resembled her in most ways. After Avi, she created Ebony, a black-furred woman with red eyes and a gentle yet responsible disposition. Then came Brilliance, a young girl made half out of pure light, and Five-In-One, the strangest one of all.
The five of them lived in peace for forty-three years, until things took a dreadful turn. Drakon, another Celestious, set his sights on her world, his intent being control. He teleported to the Second Realm (even though it wasn't known as such back then) and brought his army in hopes of capturing or subduing Mirage. Unfortunately for him, he succeeded too well. First, he killed Avi, then warped the other three by opening a portal to his home world that let out a blast of corruption around the world. Ebony become a feared serpentine creature called the Ezee, Brilliance turned into a dark creature known as the Shadow Beast, and Five-In-One gained a twisted sense of humor that led them to take many lives, although none were done by them.
Mirage, alone and on the verge of defeat, saw only one way of escape: death. She forced Drakon to make a killing blow, which had different effects than it would on a human. The backlash of energy vaporized Drakon, scattering his molecules across the Second Realm. Mirage was reduced to a powerless, memory-less, and human form of her previous glory. She woke up on earth, a child without any of her memory.

Living Creatures
Reducio
The creatures and plants that are found in the Second Realm are incredibly diverse. Some resemble Earthen creatures, while some seem like they belong in a fictional story (which they do
).
Eskrills
They are violet and black feathered puma-like creatures with elongated snouts that can be as much as three or four feet long, and huge wings. Their eyes are normally black, but sometimes an Eskrill will have golden eyes that sets it higher in the hierarchy than black-eyes. Some people have determined that these beasts have almost human intelligence, which only increases the danger already shown by their teeth, claws, strength, and speed.
Nymics
These creatures are small rodents with four claws on each of their five paws. They have short stubby hair all over their bodies, which is colored in a mixture of blue, red, and green shades. A Nymic also has three stubby tails that are no longer than their claws.
Marsh Bear
A gigantic bearish creature covered in pale beige skin. It has oversized fangs like sharpened beaver teeth that hang from its mouth, and also has retractable, serrated claws and opposable thumbs 9with no claws on them). They tend to live in marshes and swamps, hence their name.
Prodraxis
A snowy-white serpent with fuzzy purple fur in a ruff around its neck and at the end of its tail. Two violet eyes are found in the middle of a diamond-shaped head, and each scale has a border of purple. A bite from the prodraxis with its long silvery fangs isn't deadly, but still very painful, almost crippling, and lasts for 9-15 hours.
Shadow Unicorns
One of the two "unicorn" types, they have almost hors-like features, but their fur is always jt black and their teeth are long and jagged. They have burning orange eyes and are twice as big as an Earthen horse, with a single twisted horn protruding from their forehead. Smaller, but similar-looking spikes run down its back, and it has no mane.
Celestial Unicorns
It looks quite similar to the Shadow Unicorn, but has golden fur and brilliant blue eyes. However, just like its darker kin, it still has a liking for meat.
Strangulators
They are large, flinty grey beasts that move extremely slowly, and often can only move a couple hundred feet in 6 hours. They hunt at night, when the dim light lets them be mistaken for large piles of boulders. Because of their nocturnal life, they have three round, yellow eyes, one on each of their three thickest tentacles. Strangulators also have six longer and thinner appendages without eyes, and a toothy maw under a flap of skin that can be found on their side.
Ashen Deer
Ashen Deer are small, four-legged creatures with an impressive rack of antlers on both male and female specimens, although the female's are slightly smaller. Their grey fur is constantly in a state of molt that tends to surround them on non-windy days until they look like their surrounded by a cloud of ash. Their hooves are cloven, and each has a long, serpentine tail as long as their whole body.
Carnivines
Carnivines are creepers that have dark brown veins running through their leaves. They disguise themselves by wrapping around other plants or lurking in the underbrush, and will strangle any living creature that touches them (excluding plants) by detecting the heat signatures through their leaves.
Splatter Berries
These are berries of any colour that grow on small, foot-high bushes. Different coloured berries can grow on the same bush, and each one secrets a colourful sap is they get squished or broken. The sap can be used to dye objects, and are impossible to wash out.
Kokomers
They are large brown spheres that are covered in a sweet and sticky sap that's amber coloured. The inside of their protective shell is filled with a gooey grey syrup that tastes like chocolate icing. They grow high-up in large Kokomer trees.
Water Rods
They are bushes formed of long, hollow, greyish-black sticks that jut out in all directions. The sticks are full of pure water that is brought through the Water Rod's roots, which are all taproots in size and function.
Everburns
Everburns are small bulbs that grow in tall, vertical trees and when set on fire, they grow rapidly (reaching full size in 3-4 hours), until they fall off and break apart, releasing a white foam that extinguishes the fire and tastes like cooked marshmallows. Unburnt Everburns contain nothing but air and a very small amount of inedible clear liquid that causes vomiting in those that ingest it.
Nankus Trees
These are short trees that span out their branches in all directions except down. They have brilliant blue and purple leaves, and tend to entangle themselves if several grow together. Can form very effective walls if many are grown nearby one another because of this.
Cumuli Flowers
These flowers are fluffy, white, cottony balls that grow on single stems. They're named after Cumuli clouds, which they look similar to, and only grow in large clumps.
Zweiluses
Zweiluses are clusters of small red berries that grow on thin vines and taste like strong mints. They are cherry-like in form, but have strawberry-like seeds.
Aurora Lettuce
They taste like lettuce, hence their name, and are typically used to feed livestock, but can be an emergency food source if necessary. Eating too many at once causes stomach cramps, however. They grow in large groups and look like large, round leaves that are coloured in shades of purple, blue, and green.
Lumi Trees
Lumi trees are large trees with pearly bark that is rough to the touch, but looks smooth no matter how closely you inspect it. Clusters of grey or black spheres grow high up, in the topmost branches, and they grow brightly when they fall, which is often due to their great weight. The fallen clusters are useful as lights, and are roughly the size of an adult's head.
Razorheads
These plants look like fuzzy oblong bulbs atop grassy stalks from a distance, but the fuz is really razor-sharp and tears through skin with ease. Afterwards, Razorheads feed off of any spilled blood. They grow in plains, where their grassy appearances is easily disguised.
Smokers
Smokers take any plant form, but all ooze smoky-grey sap when cut. If burnt, the smoke then seeks out living creatures and smothers them like a deadly blanket. The only way to save someone being smothered is to submerge their head (where the smoke will cloak) in water.
HousePods
These plants are a strange case - they were actually formed by humans that inhabited the forested region of the Second Realm. Early on, HousePods were formed by weaving vines into large spherical shapes. It was difficult, back-breaking work, but because of the sped-up evolution, HousePods now grow themselves over the span of 1-3 days.
Trust-Me-Nots
One of the most bizarre plants out there, Trust-Me-Nots have a single, thick stalk that extends two feet in the air. Five vine-like branches sprout from the top of the stalk and wave through the air like it's water. This is because of the berries that top each branch that are the size of one's fist and are lighter than air until punctured or broken. The berries are a stunning lilac colour, and make whoever eats one have the strangest and most powerful hallucinations for up to two weeks.
Eskrills
They are violet and black feathered puma-like creatures with elongated snouts that can be as much as three or four feet long, and huge wings. Their eyes are normally black, but sometimes an Eskrill will have golden eyes that sets it higher in the hierarchy than black-eyes. HISTORY
Reducio
The Lie:
(while still technically true, it's not her whole life)
Miranda has been an orphan all her life. She never remembered her parents, and was picked up by Social Services as a young child of six wandering alone in a park overnight. After two years in an orphanage, she was adopted by Evelyn and Harrison Everest.
While Miranda was over the moon to finally have a family, her excitement disappeared after a year or so of being mainly ignored on the part of her foster parents. From then on out, her life was mainly unremarkable. She formed a group of friends, got decent grades, and strove to make her parents proud, but apart from the occasional comment, be it positive or negative, they still didn't pay too much attention to her.
Maybe it was the strangeness of her presence, which tended to confuse humans around her and agitate more perceptive animals, or the odd stories she told of seeing golden visions of unfamiliar, alien landscapes. Maybe both. Either way, the end result was the same: they never treated her like a true child.
The Truth:
Miranda isn't human, not fully. She's a Celestious, and not just any Celestious. In her past life, she went by the name Mirage, and created the Second Realm, not that she knows it just yet. For more on this story, see the History section of the Settings Page. Anyways, after Drakon sent her to Earth, she grew up in the care of orphanages, then in the household of the Everests. A normal child, to all appearances.
Sure, odd things seemed to happen around her - normally friendly dogs would bark and whine, cats and rodents avoided her like the plague, and reptiles eyed her warily. Only the birds ever seemed to like her, landing on her hands when she offered them seeds. She also claimed to see visions of golden landscapes that looked like nothing found on Earth, but stopped mentioning it when her parents debated sending her to a psychiatrist. So to those who looked closely, she wasn't normal. Fortunately for Miranda, no one looked closely. Her secret was safe.
PERSONALITY
Reducio
Miranda has problems trusting others after her experiences with social services and the belief that her true parents abandoned her. Once you obtain her trust, though, she'll do anything to stand by you and help you. Gaining her trust however, is an incredible ordeal. Miranda values kindness, inner strength, honesty, and those who truly appreciate her. Acts of bravery also commemorate people in her mind.
She prides herself in her inner strength, but is terrified of taking on important responsibilities, because it means she might fail and mess things up. Criticism almost always sends her into a depressed state for a while as she weighs the merits of it, while praise almost never affects her, unless given by a trusted friend.
In competition, you can count on her to always do her best, although she tends to relax and let down her guard some if the match is friendly. Another neutral trait she possess is her tendency to make snap decisions, which sometimes pay off and sometimes don't.
Miranda tends to walk the fine line between being an introvert and an extrovert. She tends to be shy and cautious around strangers, but takes forever to stop talking when around friends. She just likes to ask so many questions! That's always been one of her main traits - curiosity. And is someone tells her it killed a cat, she'll just shrug and mutter something about who cares whether a cat died or not.
Depending on who she's with, Miranda's personality changes drastically. Strangers or neutral friends will see her as polite and friendly, but often pensive and shy. Her better friends see her as an excited person who can always be counted on to ask twenty more questions that really necessary. She also feels like people (strangers) are often silently laughing at her or only tolerate her presence, although that's rarely true.
APPEARANCE
Reducio
Face Claim: Alisha Newton
Miranda has long, wavy brown hair with matching hazel eyes that catch one's gaze and hold it inexorably. She has pale skin, along with a childish face that gives her a trusting and hopeful look. If measured, she'd reach a modest five foot four, which isn't too tall for a thirteen year old like her, but isn't considered short either. Her build isn't quite athletic...more lithe and graceful from the gymnastic lessons she takes.
A jagged scar wraps around her right wrist, but isn't noticeable at first, because the white line blends into her skin. Miranda's hands are callous-free and boast long, dexterous fingers that are tipped by bitten nails, a habit she can't seem to make go away.
As for her clothing choice, Miranda prefers to wear darker shades of clothes and values comfort over niceties. This means t-shirts, sweaters, jeans, and tennis shoes, all in monochromatic shades that vary from light grey to pitch black, but can swing through navy, violet, and olive tones as well.
ABILITIES/CELESTIOUS HERITAGE
Reducio
All Celestious are more gifted than natural humans. For one, they don't look humanoid, but that's where the similarities between each of their race ends, other than the fact that every one boasts a pair of wings, leading to many calling them the Winged Ones.
Miranda, or Mirage as she was known in that form, looked like a bizarre cross between a human and an eagle. She has huge white wings with bird-like talons tipping off her fingers and toes (her feet also have opposable digits). Her "hair" is made from extra-long white feathers that extend from her scalp and run down until ending somewhere near the middle of her back. Smaller, golden feathers can be found in a ruff over her ears, and her eyes are a brilliant, matching gold.
Her abilities are very powerful, like those of any Celestious. However, because of her bought of amnesia, she doesn't know how to access any of them at the beginning of the story. In fact, by the end of the first book, she will only discover a single power of her many ones. Therefor, here are her natural abilities (even if she has yet to learn them):
-Flying (using her wings)
-Mind Reading
-Communicating Telepathically
-Using Telekinesis (moving things with her mind)
-Shapeshifting
-Speak to 2nd Realm Creatures
-Creating Illusions (hence the name Mirage)
-Manipulate the 2nd Realm (this ability is rendered useless by the main villain's presence)

The basis of this story is a quest for truth, and to rid the Second Realm of its resident evil, Drakon (and his allies).
-Miranda is taken to the Second Realm through one of her visions just before falling asleep
-She meets Cedar and Ripley just before getting attacked by an Eskrill
-Ripley fends it off, then they take Miranda to Sanctuary, the village they live in
-They take her to meet the rulers of the village, who approve her entry
-Afterwards, she is led to a spare "house", and instructed to rest up for the next day
-Ripley takes her on a tour the next morning and explains about her predicament
-They meet up with Sylvester and Ghost later on, and Cedar shows them around the Fields
-Afterwards, the group minus Cedar visits the Gardens
-A strange sight prompts Miranda to ask Ripley about abilities and curses
-Later that night, she goes on a walk and is frightened by a wolf-like creature
-Returns to her HousePod and finds herself under attack by Cobra and Chameleon
-Fortunately, she is rescued by the same wolf-creature, who then leaves.
-She tells Cedar and Ripley in the morning
-They say not the tell the Sanctuary leaders "just yet" (and tell her who the wolf was)
-Weeks later, she goes on an exploratory trip with Ripley/Sylvester/Unnamed others
-They show her certain deadly plants (Carnivines, Trust-Me-Nots)
-Ripley soon spots something suspicious and hurries them all back
-Miranda makes him tell her why after they reach Sanctuary (answer: Ezee trail)
-She has a nightmare about the Ezee later that night
-Finds Ripley in the morning to ask for help discovering her ability, but no powers reveal themselves

-The Basilisk comes out and orders Miranda to be handed over to him, but is refused
-They are rescued by a herd of Shadow Unicorns, which attack both groups but are a distraction
-Chapter ends with the Basilisk's final threat, claiming she will go to him
-They arrive back at Sanctuary only to realize Sylvester and Andrea have vanished

VILLAINS
Reducio
Yes, there are a lot. But like I said, this is supposed to be a many-book series, and some villains only show up once or twice in certain books, while some only get mentioned throughout, but I decided to elaborate on to allow extra background information for me to work with.
Drakon
ReducioThis evil Celestious is the one who put Miranda/Mirage in her predicament in the first place. In appearance, he resembles a dark-green scaled man with sharp claws on his hands and feet. A pair of twisted horns extend from his head, which frame his bright blue eyes (which turn red when he's angry). A spiked tail trails behind him, and is often used as a surprise weapon on his behalf. Like all Celestious, he bears an enormous pair of wings, although his are leathery and bat-like.
While powerful, Drakon is considered "weak" by many other Celestious, the only exception being Mirage, who is younger and less experienced than he. That is the reason he targeted her expressly, because an easy win is the only kind he wants. He is fine with leaving challenges to the soon-to-be defeated. Drakon's powers allow him to fly with his wings, read minds and communicate telepathically, move objects with his mind (telekinesis), shapeshift (which he almost never uses), and even control the minds of others if they meet his gaze.
The Basilisk
ReducioThe Basilisk is Drakon's most loyal servant, even if he only serves of fear, and the fact that his master has promised him freedom if he can complete a series of tasks, the final one of which is either capturing, killing, or turning Mirage to their side. Therefor, the Basilisk pursues her doggedly throughout the books, although he expressly orders his followers, the Serpent's Fang, to bring her to him alive, in the fear that Drakon will revoke his promise of someone other than him fulfills his task.
He is typically seen as no more than a black-cloaked figure with an expressionless white mask covering his face. Underneath the cover, he has yellow, slitted eyes, and is covered in grey and green mottled scales, with serrated teeth. His fingers bear wickedly sharp talons, and when angry, the Basilisk can grow sharp spines on his forearms and down his back.
Thanks to Drakon, he can hypnotize a single person at a time by looking into their eyes, and he can turn willing humans (including those persuaded by his gaze) into reptilian servants.
The Serpent's Fang
ReducioJust like the Basilisk, every member of the Serpent's Fang shares some of his reptilian qualities, while some possess different powers entirely along with their appearance, such as Chameleon, who can change the color of his scales to blend into nearby items. This is because each and every one was transformed into what they are now by his power. There are 12 members of the group, as seen in the following:
-Viper: she is the leader (excluding the Basilisk) and best fighter
-Cobra: he performs ambushes, and acquires hostages from the shadows
-Chameleon: he is Cobra's partner
-Tuatara: she is the strategist and the one who stays behind
-Mamba: she is Viper's second in command and only slightly less deadly, but faster
-Crocodile: she is a burly member who knows how to play the sympathy vote
-Komodo: he is an equally stocky and powerful agent, as well as Viper's defense
-Python: he is a strong but wiry member that acts as back-up
-Gecko: he is an acrobat that attacks from anywhere
-Iguana: he is a stocky member trained to withstand harsh climates
-Cottonmouth: one of Viper's lesser servants
-Copperhead: Viper's other servant
The Ezee
ReducioThe Ezee is the only villain that someone told Miranda about without her having to face it/them first. A terrifying, snake-like creature covered in matted black fur laced with leaves and dirt, it uses Carnivines (see the Living Creatures section of the Setting) to corner and capture its prey. Because of this, many are sure it has an unnatural affinity for the plants - how else would it seem like they follow its every command? Two red eyes glow from the top of its flattened, diamond head, and its body stretches over 200 yards.
The Shadow Beast
ReducioThis creature stalks its prey in the night, when her shadowy body is camouflaged by the darkness. She looks humanoid, but is mostly made from shadows with a pair of bat-like wings and a pair of wickedly sharp ram's horns on her head. Nothing of her lower body can be seen, and two purple eyes glare balefully from within her shadows, in the general area of her head.
She will follow her prey for hours, betraying only hints of her presence to terrify them soundly. The Beast than confronts them, consuming any unfortunate victims within her body, erasing them from existence completely.
Five-In-One
ReducioFive-In-One consists of five seperate entities that act as if they were a whole. Seperatly known as Joy, Sadness, Surprise, Anger, and Curiosity, they each bear a round, golden plate that is their face, and each has an exaggerated expression that coincides with their names. Each is a little less than two feet tall, and have white bodies like a mannequin with sharpened points tipping their fingers, but everything is covered in dark smudges that refuse to come off. These same smudges can be found on their face plates.
Their preferred method of hunting is creating elaborate traps and waiting for their victims to stumble into them, than leaving the helpless prey in places where other predators can find them easily. Five-In-One has never been known to actually eat anything tangible before.
Specter
ReducioShe is a cursed person like any other, but left the safety of the villages to strike out on her own, taking on the moniker, "Specter" in exchange for her old name (Esme). Her curse turns her invisible whenever any living creature looks at her directly, making most beasts incapable of hunting her, with the exclusion of plants or creatures that rely on senses other than sight. That is why she's survived as a loner so long, that and her tendency to steal from everyone else she meets to gain new supplies.
The Basilisk Impersonator
ReducioKnown properly as Alex Skye, the Basilisk Impersonator has never actually met the true Basilisk, but simply heard rumors of his presence from several wandering tribes, and adopted the name to strike fear. He has black hair, pale skin and sullen grey eyes, and typically wears clothing stolen from his victims, stitched in with scales or furs.
His ability allows him to sense varying degrees of danger of distress, but he discovered a unique use for the sap of Smoker plants, which when boiled in slow increments, can form a silvery sludge he calls Petrif. Petrif has a dangerous effect, that being it can petrify any living substance that touches it in a matter of moments. Alex is careful to never touch it himself, and keep it in stone vials stoppered with spongy plant leaves in order to unstopper and throw at enemies or victims.

ALLIES
Reducio
Unfortunately, the amount of villains is daunting. And the problem is, Miranda's allies are much fewer. Some are considered secondary characters, but they'll get a preliminary description here, then a more extensive one later on.
Cedar Everest
ReducioCedar was the first person Miranda met in the Second Realm, and has remained one of her most steadfast friends, along with Ripley and Sylvester. He works with the livestock, tending to their needs with a quiet patience.
Ripley Destin
ReducioRipley is the one Miranda tends to turn to when things begin to overwhelm her, and his joking and humorous manner make him the perfect candidate for such things. Especially since, even with his non-serious outlook, he can be relied on with things of the utmost importance.
Sylvester Jordan
ReducioSylvester is the strategist and bookworm out of Miranda's allies. He can be counted on to remember facts and plan out action, but when it comes to real situations, his bravery tends to fail him at crucial moments. It seems proper then, that his ability has to do with teleportation - a gift that allows him to escape danger time and time again.
Andrea Morgan
ReducioA talented Gardener, Andrea gets along well with Sylvester, who enjoys showing her detailed notes on plants from beyond Sanctuary, especially those considered too dangerous for regular use. Andrea is full of useful ideas, but doesn't share them often. This causes her to often be written off as an empty-headed ditzy with a talent for undeserved optimism.
Skyler Morgan
ReducioAndrea's older brother, Skyler is as cold and solitary as she is cheerful and excited. He spends most of his time alone, performing his duties with a strict regularity. Skyler is a stickler for rules, and tends to ignore most of the people that speak to him. By now, most Sanctuary residents simply ignore him.
Akiko Ling
ReducioAkiko is an imperious and stubborn girl that doesn't seem to have time for friends, unless you count the bond she shares with Andrea. While technically still in tutoring, Akiko spends her nights patrolling Sanctuary on the lookout for threats because of her unique curse.
Lily Ashwin
ReducioLily was the first ever human to arrive in the Second Realm, and she was also the first to die. Now she lives on as an ethereal Phantom, using her precognition ability to help where she can. Many who meet her refer to the blue-skinned Phantom as the Oracle.
Ghost
ReducioGhost is a strange case - there's no denying it. Like Lily, he's a Phantom...but he's not human. In fact, he's a wolf. Like all Phantoms, his whole body is blue-tinged, meaning his fur is navy and his eyes are a crystalline blue. Ghost is also bigger than an average Earthen wolf, even if he does look like one (in form, anyways), standing 40 inches at the shoulder. He tends to watch those nearby with a coolly calculating expression, if that's even possible for such a creature. However, his intelligence (or semblance of it) is eerily high, and Ghost has partnered himself with Sylvester, one of Miranda's other allies.
The Magistrate
ReducioThere are four members of the Magistrate, known as Magisters. Edward and Michael Phillips are brothers, some of the first to arrive in the Second Realm. Edward is cautious and suspicious of anything out of the ordinary, while Michael is more cheerful, though he shares his brother's wariness even if it's less obvious. Sebastian Freemang is a rough and tumble member that doesn't pay much attention to Magistrate proceedings, and is therefor treated with considerable disdain by the others, who cannot refuse his place because of the essential ability he wields. Elizabeth Grey is the final member, a prim and proper girl with a preference to respect and an orderly society.

Subplot #1 - Inner Dilemma
Reducio
-She has always thought of herself as "never enough" because her parents tended to ignore her in favor of their jobs and other occupations that didn't involve their daughter.
-While her parents never directly commented on any failures (except her proper upbringing), Miranda saw their lack of interest as disapproval and strove to fulfill their wishes.
-When she arrived in the 2nd Realm, Miranda did her best to forget her doubts and simply learn all there was needed to know to survive.
-Because there was so much to learn, she actually succeeded in forgetting for a time, between her busy days and the unique sensation of having true friends.
-This all changed upon the disastrous mess with the Ezee (see Main Plot).
-She blames herself, because she was the one who convinced Ripley to take a smaller group that was less equipped and head out in the direction they went. There was also the way the Ezee seemed to follow her only, and how Cedar got injured saving her when she wasn't fast enough in her escape.
-Miranda spends plenty of ensuing time with Cedar, helping him around, doing grunt tasks that prove too difficult for him, etc. She sees it as a way of atoning, and helping her friend...and that's all it is...right?
-The feeling of being inadequate is a deep-set one for Miranda, and is therefor difficult to remove or lessen. For this reason it never really disappears entirely until the end of the planned series, although it comes and goes in terms of severity. An example is this exact incident: any form of large failure that harms others hurts her more than anything, and brings the thought roaring back with a vengeance.
-(Miranda is quite selfless, so that is why the thought of others suffering for her mistakes harms her so. Later on her enemies learn this, and attempt to persuade her by using her friends and allies as hostages. This tends to shatter her sanity for moments at a time as the guilt takes over all else. Such emotions are not meant to be felt by Celestious (although her human guise helps her somewhat). These effects are never long-lasting once her friends are okay, but remain disastrous while in effect).
-Also, being a Celestious, she is more selfless than the average human, which leads to her making difficult choices to improve others' well-being over her own.
-In the end, I plan for Miranda to finally realize she's worth something after a heart-to-heart discussion with her love interest, in where he tries to explain how much she helped him over the course of their time together. He tries to prove that she is worth something, no matter what her adoptive parents and everyone else thought.
Miranda struggles with feelings of failure after her failings in the tunnel fiasco with the Ezee, and her selflessness that often gets her into trouble.

Subplot #2 - Outer Dilemma
Reducio
-Sanctuary has two teams of explorers, including a backup team to fill in for "missing" members (aka those who aren't fast or smart enough and end up...out of commission).
-Ripley heads the first team, and his group includes Sylvester and the twins Cyprus and Celeste among others.
-The other team is headed by Sebastien when he's able, but has a replacement head and one more member to recompense for the often-missing leader.
-The two teams alternate, leaving on day-long trips before returning in the evening. They then have a day off the following day while the other group goes out.
-Ripley enjoys taking Miranda outside, and ensures she only ever heads out with his team, and quite often as well. Most tutored people cannot take trips outside the city until they've finished at least three months with their mentors, but Ripley has a higher position in the unofficial hierarchy of Sanctuary, and uses this to his advantage. Therefor, Miranda spends more time than pretty much all her peers out in the forest, and sometimes even beyond.
-Sylvester is the Scribe of their group, meaning her transcribes every nugget of information found by his exploration group onto more permanent records to be used by anyone venturing outside of the safety of Sanctuary.
-Knowledge is sometimes known as power, and that fact is even truer in the 2nd Realm. The unknown is just as deadly as a known Eskrill of Strangulator. Weaknesses, strengths, advantageous positions nearby...those bits of intelligence are invaluable to the inhabitants of Mirage's dimension.
-Many of the most dangerous parts of the first book are encountered during Miranda's trips with Ripley and the others. This goes to prove my earlier point that being a part of an exploratory group is one of the most dangerous jobs in Sanctuary.
The constant fight for knowledge that predominates most of Miranda's visits "outside".

Subplot #3 - Another Outer Dilemma
Reducio
-Throughout the first few books, the Magistrate (leaders of Sanctuary) remain mainly suspicious of Miranda. Sebastian and Michael seem okay with her, but Elizabeth and Edward seem whole-heartedly against her. Elizabeth doesn't matter after the second or third book, but Edward continues to be a thorn in Miranda's side for as long as I have planned (so far).
-Also, one of the Magisters is working for the Basilisk, and by extension, Drakon. However, this isn't figured out until later on, though hints are dropped throughout the books leading up to the big discovery.
-Edward constantly tries to get her thrown out of Sanctuary once he discovers the danger she poses, and before that was still suspicious of her strange appearance and the strange aura she projects (although at first he alludes that aura to her ability, but becomes suspicious of it once her first power is discovered).
-Sebastien admires her effort to prove herself and her willingness to help.
-Elizabeth likes Miranda's polite manner, although disapproves of the way she seems to prefer exploring than everything else. In her eyes, the 2nd Realm is a curse on her otherwise calm life.
-Michael shares Edward's general unease in her presence, but whether that's because of the theories his brother shares with him, or Miranda herself, is yet to be discovered. However, he acts kind, or at least cordial, in her presence.

CEDAR WILLIAMS
Reducio
Nickname(s): Tree-boy (by Ripley)
Time in the 2nd realm: 3 years & 4 months
Age: 15
Sanctuary Job: Caring for the Livestock (Farmer)
Ability: He can talk to animals and weakly influence their decisions
Appearance: Cedar has blonde hair that is almost white in color, and brilliant aquamarine eyes. he is slightly taller than normal, but nowhere near as tall as his best friend, Ripley. He has a slight build that fails to portray his true strength, and his arms and legs are coated in scratches and scars.
Personality: Cedar is kind and compassionate. He never talks as much as Ripley, which leads others to assume he's shy or quiet, but that's not true. When faced with a difficult situation, Cedar is a realist when he shares information with others, but still tends to hope for the best anyways, not that he mentions it. He tends to get uncomfortable in tense situations or when he suspects someone of dishonesty because he's used to the way you always know where you stand with animals, and they almost never lie Cedar is competitive with close friends or when he's truly good at something, but plays for fun otherwise. Any decision is thought over carefully before being made, unless someone close to him is put at risk, in which case he'll rush as much as possible. Given a choice, he prefers the outdoors over being inside, and will often escape to nature or up a tall tree when the stress gets to him or things become too much. His values include honesty, strength when it's used in the right ways, and compassion.
Past/Family: Cedar's family was a loud and boisterous one, with two parents, three sisters, four brothers, two dogs, a cat, and a turtle. They weren't the richest, but they never struggled too much to put food on the table or keep a roof over their heads. Unfortunately, Cedar constantly felt drowned out amidst the chaos, or stuck in the shadows of his older siblings and their grand exploits. He had quite a few friends at school, but just like Miranda, it always felt sort of fake, although in his case it was because he was constantly plagued with thoughts of whether they just put up with him to get to his family. Sometimes he finds himself missing his family after the past three years, but is quick to push the thoughts aside and continue.

RIPLEY DESTIN
Reducio
Nickname(s): None (at the moment)
Time in the 2nd realm: 3 years & 1 month
Age: 15
Sanctuary Job: Leader of an exploration team (Exploratory Leader)
Ability: He can cover himself in electricity that delivers nasty, sometimes even fatal, shocks to anyone that gets too close. However, it is very draining and difficult to maintain for long
Appearance: Ripley has dirty-blond hair that hangs around his ears and is typically filled with sticks, dirt, or other items he picks up during his travels. His flinty grey eyes sparkle in amusement whenever he finds something funny, but can turn as cold as stone when he becomes uncomfortable. He is insanely tall for his age, and possesses a muscular build.
Personality: Ripley is teasing and quite loud. He finds almost everything amusing to some degree, and tries his best to lighten depressing moods with jokes and entertainment. However, his teasing and light-hearted manner hide a deep hole inside him left behind by his parents. He can be impossibly stubborn at times, and sees it as his responsibility to be to his friends what his parents never were for him. For this reason, he refers to his closest friends as his "family". Ripley rarely takes time to consider his options, preferring to just wing it and see what happens. Predictably, he also has no patience for mind games or battles of wit.
Past/Family: Ripley has given up on his blood family, and instead refers to his friends as his new family. He was an only child that never truly measured up to his parents' high standards, and often felt as if he never lived his own life, only the one his mother and father chose for him. Because of his naturally unruly nature, his proper family tended to avoid their "disappointing" son, although that did nothing to stop them from exacting punishment after punishment on him. For this reason, Ripley finds that being sent to the 2nd Realm was the best thing that ever happened to him, danger and all.

SYLVESTER JORDAN
Reducio
Nickname(s): None (at the moment)
Time in the 2nd realm: 1 year & 3 months
Age: 14
Sanctuary Job: Records info for an exploratory team (Scribe)
Ability: He can teleport anywhere within sight, but not into or from shadows or patches of shade. This ability is rendered useless at night unless an area is illuminated
Appearance: Sylvester had fiery red hair and brilliant green eyes. He is a bit shorter than average, but not by too much, and has freckles scattered across the bridge of his nose. Like a typical red-head, his skin is pale and burns easily, and bears thin scar lines on his back. He'll wear pretty much anything that's serviceable, and he has an odd habit of collecting "souvenirs" and keeping them in a roughly-stitched shoulder bag along with a stack of papyrus and a stylus.
Personality: Sylvester is witty and ridiculously smart. He also possesses photographic memory, which, when paired with his amazing perception, is a force to be reckoned with. However, he hates fighting and taking uncalculated risks. He is much more comfortable in familiar environments, and tends to act cheerful when he feels confident. Otherwise he becomes worried and even more introverted than normal. Sylvester also freaks out if he thinks his head can't be trusted, since that is the one sense he relies on more than anything else. He is really shy, but that can be overrode by his extreme curiosity and love of learning new things.
Past/Family: Sylvester lived with his aunt and uncle after his parents disappeared when he was young. He had an older sister named Sarah, but she preferred shopping to learning and they didn't really get along. However, he adored his aunt and uncle, both of whom worked as archeologists and took Sylvester along whenever they could to foster his curious and inquisitive nature. He hates the thought that they can't remember him anymore, and mostly does his best to think of other things.
