I Miss You Already
After a decent portion of time losing herself to the winding halls and wonderous architectural feats of the Hogwarts Castle, Claryssa finally made her way into the owlery, a dome-shaped space filled with an assortment of perches and ledges for the resident owls to make their home. The room was chilly, located high up on the West Tower with a floor covered in straw, and she shivered slightly, drawing her arms in towards her chest as she scanned the room with hesitance. Claryssa and her sister Marissa had promised to meet today in order to send off letters to their parents who were eagerly awaiting a notification from them, but as Clary stood alone in the frigid room, she began to have doubts on the soundness of her plan.
Knowing her parents and older brother James would be awaiting a letter from her whether or not Marissa finally decided to show, Claryssa did her best to ignore the biting cold and carefully picked her way over the hay-covered floor, wincing as she saw a few rodent bones mixed in with assortment of garb that served as the floor of the circular room. A soft breeze blew through, causing her hair to whip in her face, and she quickly brushed it away, finally being forced to pull it back into a high ponytail to avoid the distraction it was causing. Done with handling logistics, Claryssa found a small outcropping in the room that blocked the wind and ducked behind it, pulling out the letter that she had written earlier in the day as she waited to see if her sister would ever show up.

Once finished with the letter, Claryssa straightened her stiff legs, placing her quill and ink back into the bag before neatly folding up the envelope and carrying it over to a school owl anxiously awaiting a letter. Once ensuring it was secure, she offered the owl its payment and sent it on its way, watching as its powerful wings disappeared out the window and into the world. Although Clary wished to leave and escape the biting cold, she decided to wait for Marissa, moving to sit in the small platform that looked over the campus below. She hadn't had time to socialize with her twin recently and missed the opportunity, new schedules, and new friends constantly pulling them in opposite directions. Surely she'd remember to come. Surely Clary wouldn't be left in this empty room full of owls and cold wind alone. Surely she didn't already feel the need to tell her sister, "I miss you already."Mum and Dad (and James too),
Hogwarts is both a dream come true and a nightmare, not that I think you'll be able to understand properly. The school itself is amazing, full of magic and wonders that would probably make you faint. I haven't been to any real lessons, yet, just little introductions and what-not, but I've even seen a few students use magic themselves! It all seems unreal like I'm trapped in some dream and one day will wake up and find this was all for nothing, but I guess that just means I should enjoy it while I'm here.
The kids here are nice... for the most part. I mean, they actually are all nice, but sometimes I feel like I don't fit in. Everyone's going around talking about all of these spells and people I've never heard of before, and no amount of flipping through pages of words can prepare you for that. I know I'm supposed to be the same as all of them, but I can still feel the aching difference in our histories with every new conversation I'm a part of. Making friends is usually a strength of mine, but here, I feel like I'm just drowning.
(I actually did make one friend! Her name is Louisa Bennett. Apparently, her mum owns that coffee shop Brew Who that you guys adore so much. Go say hi for me.)
I guess I really shouldn't be moping so much. You know what, just don't worry about me, okay? I'm having a blast, and even though it'll take some time to adjust, I know I'll be fine! (Marissa is doing well, too, she should be sending an owl later on). James, how's it going over at school without me? Say hi to Kelsie for me (*insert wink here*)! Joking aside, I love you guys a lot. I miss you already.

Marissa quickly ran up the stairs to owlery, tripping over herself a few times. Her sister Claryssa could probably hear a few scuffles and “oofs” before she could even see her clumsy twin sister. Marissa had her winter scarf on as well as a thick winter coat, which made her have a weird resemblance to an eskimo. Mari’s hair continued to fly around crazily as the winds started to pick up as she was slowly climbing up the stairs. She held onto her small backpack, making sure the winds wouldn’t pick it up and take it away from her. Mari had some important books and notes stuffed into the bag.
Finally making it to the top, Marissa gasped as she made it to the top. She looked around the owlery in awe, never seeing something quite like this before. She plopped down to her sister and gave her one of cheesy trade mark smiles and waved. She sighed, leaning on Claryssa as the wind swept across the both of them. Sadly, Marissa was selectively mute so only hand gestures and a few whispers were the norm for the twin sisters. Marissa sadly developed this through bullying and being separated away from her siblings, becoming detached from the both of them.

Clary's deflated expression seemed to re-inflate as Marissa finally arrived, running hopelessly late to their meeting point. The dejected Ravenclaw girl had already been sitting around for over an hour by the time her sister showed, clambering up the steps like a heard of rhinos barreling down an open field. Yes, Marissa was a selective mute, and although her voice was quiet, she definitely wasn't herself. Still, Clary found she was incapable of being mad at her twin for long. Although they didn't necessarily look exactly alike and weren't always the closest when growing up together, her sister was now her biggest ally in this new and unfamiliar world of witchcraft and wizardry.
Clary wiped the frown off of her face, replacing it with a soft smile, and nodded her head in greeting to Mari. She doubted it was her fault that her sister was late. Hufflepuff was a decent distance from the owlery, all the way over on the First Floor, or so she'd heard according to the rumors. Technically, common room locations were meant to be kept secret, but everyone knew that rarely remained the case. Perhaps she should've met Mari in a more fair location, feeling a bit guilty that she'd made her poor twin run halfway across the castle, where all she had to do was climb up a few flights of stairs once exiting the Ravenclaw common room. She'd plan out the course better in the future but was currently reminded of why they'd arrived in the first place.
"You were running a bit late, so I already sent my letter to mum, dad, and James. Have you written yours yet?" Clary questioned, shivering slightly against the wind. At least Mari had thought to prepare herself for the frigid temperature, donning on enough clothing to make her look like a fluffy Eskimo. Clary simple wore her normal robes, not prepared for staying in the open-aired space for such a long portion of time.

Marissa gave her sister a sheepish smile as she rubbed the back of her neck. This was obviously a no to her question. Mari tried to cheer her sister up by wrapping her own scraf around her, finishing with a gentle poke on her nose. She smiled brightly at the idea of tryig to cheer her own sister up, something she rarely did. Unlike her sister, Marissa was not that bright compared to her. She normally daydreamed and played around like a typical eleven year old, whereas her sister would spend her days drawing, reading different types of books and chatting with all the parents and other child.
Looking around the owlery, Marissa shivered slightly at the harsh winds. Seeings all of the owls perched up in their pigeon holes made Marissa feel a bit anxious, thinking they were all staring down judgingly at her. She looked back to Claryssa with a nervous smile and shook her head. Knowing Marissa, she probably did not have anything to say to her parents and brother. She rarely did. Marissa pointed to her Hufflepuff badge, wanting her sister to know which house she got. She knew Claryssa would get Ravenclaw, she had the brains and the curosity for it.

Clary beamed at the sight of the badge, proud of her sister for getting into a house where she knew she'd be welcomed and cared for. Though she knew the separation between the two would be saddening, Clary figured it'd be for the best. Despite being twins by birth, Clary and Mari were far from having identical personalities. While Mari was quiet, more reserved, and usually had her head stuck in the clouds, Clary was constantly drawing, flipping through different picture books, and going on adventures with her older brother James. She had never meant for the two of them to grow so far apart, but somehow the situation just grew into that with time.
She giggled, finally relaxing into her sister's presence, as Mari wrapped the scarf warmly around her neck and booped her nose, a habit the two twins had developed at a young age when the other one was sad. Mari had always been so kind and sweet, and she knew, that even without being able to be there for her all the time, her twin would learn to take care of herself and display her kind heart proudly in the Hufflepuff House. "Somehow I knew you'd answer just that," Clary murmured, shaking her head slightly. Mari was always forgetful, and unless forced, most likely wouldn't want to reach out to their parents or older brother.
She shifted to the side, opening up the flap on her leather messenger bag, and pulled out a small tub of ink, removing the lid, and a usable quill, placing both of them in front of Mari with a piece of parchment. Angling her back to block out the wind, she sat next to her sister, expectantly waiting for the letter to be completed, so they could ship it off to their family. She'd promised her parents Marissa was going to write, and she wasn't about to let her twin break that promise.

Marissa sighed, she didn’t really want to send a letter. She rarely had anything to say to her parents and brother. Knowing her sister would not back down from this, Marissa started to write her letter.
Marissa let the ink dry before folding it up and sealing it properly. She handed over her letter to her sister, trusting her more to send it off. To be honest with herself, Mari was scared of the owls. They might bite her for all she could know, but she put on a brave face for her sister. Marissa waited for her sister to send the letters, wondering to herself if her sister had made any friends without her there and if she could tag along. She could always use a helping hand with making friends, that was always Clary’s specialty.Hello mummy, daddy and James
I am currently enjoying Hogward, I got Hufflepuff! I haven’t really spoken to anyone yet but Claryssa. New people scare me all the time. I miss you guys a lot, I wish we could see eachother and not through these weird bird letters. I hope you guys are doing ok and that work is fine. I hope to make new friends soon through Claryssa and lessons when they start. Please write back, I’d love to hear from you guys.
Love from,
Marissa xx

Clary smiled, sitting patiently by as her sister dipped the tip of the feathery quill into the small bowl of ink and began to write. Mari's handwriting was messy, but at least legible, unlike Clary who took pride her handwriting, often practicing for hours when she was younger, though she was still trying her best to maneuver her through the transition of using an actual quill and ink to write instead of something a thousand times more efficient... like a fountain pen. Honestly, it was the 21st century! She didn't see anything magical about a couple of feathers and black dye, but perhaps it was all just part of the old castle, old writing material mystery aesthetic.
She scanned the letter as Mari began to write, resisting the urge to correct her sister's spelling. Though her writing wasn't that structured, it got the main point across that she missed her family and was at least thinking about them, even if she didn't always write so often. She secretly knew Marissa probably hated participating in the act, but their parents deserved to hear from their children. Especially after they've just been informed their kids have magical abilities and have been sent off to some mysterious school in an unknown location in Scotland. Clary knew if that had happened to her kids she'd be worrying endlessly for days.
Once Mari had completed the letter and sealed it up, Clary accepted it, straightening from her sitting position by the window to track down a readily awaiting owl. Her scarf flapped in the end, and after she held out her arm, the letter in her hand, an owl swooped by, perching neatly on the edge, as it held out its beak for her to hand over the piece of mail, alongside a small coin as payment. Even the Hogwarts owls had to make a living somehow! Once finished, Clary wandered back over to Mari, offering her hand to help her sister up. "Who votes we get out of here and find something fun to do?"

Marissa skipped around the owlery as her sister sent off the letters, trying to keep herself warm as well as entertained. Mari was left handed so the letter itself and ink was slightly smudged accompanied with the messy handwriting. She did not really know what to write in the letters, so she made it up as she went. As she skipped around, Marissa thought about all the lessons that had to go to, worrying about how she would have to communicate with both professors and students alike. Communication was not a strong point for Marissa, finding it very hard to even mutter a single word to someone. She even found it hard to talk to her own parents, even though she knew it was heart breaking for them. After some thinking, she thought that maybe her sister could be a translator, or maybe the teachers may hand her a whiteboard for her to write down answers, or so she was able to hold simple conversation. She suddenly skipped over to Claryssa as she spoke to her.
She giggled at her sister, waving her hand up as if she wanted to vote a yes, eager to get. Marissa did not like the daunting amount of owls staring down at them, but chose to ignore the fact. She danced around slightly, excited that the sisters were finally going to do something together.

Clary smiled, finding painstaking joy as she watched her sister skip and twirl around the room, finding a strange resemblance to herself at that moment. Although the sisters' personalities were far from alike, they still shared the same stupid habits of dancing around the room when they had nothing better to do, ready to leap right into the air. Mari deserved to be happy; she hadn't seen her sister so carefree in a long time. Back on their eleventh birthday, while Clary had been ecstatic about finding out the news of her magical heritage, Mari was quiet, as usual, but also a bit somber. She had no idea what was going through her head, but Clary assumed that Marissa worried about what being away from home would do to her. She knew Mari faced boundaries that she herself would never have to face due to her selective muteness, but struggled to find a solution to the issue, especially when she struggled to figure out how to communicate with her as well.
Perhaps Mari could become a mime one day. Her movements and facial expressions were always so exaggerated in an effort to communicate the point that she was trying to get across. She'd fit the role well. Were there such things as magical mimes?
Clary shrugged off the thought, realizing Mari was staring at her expectantly with her big, sky-blue eyes, silently questioning her twin on where they were headed next. "Wanna go check out the school grounds? I hear the herbology greenhouses are pretty cool. Maybe we can find that egg-shaped plant with the pink flowers I drew this summer!" She tilted her head to the side, waiting for Mari's reaction.

As her sister was reminiscing their times back at home, Marissa continued to dance and hop around the owlery, trying to scare away some of the owls in the process. She found their stares quiet irritating, not really liking being the centre of attention. Her twin sister was good at that, being sociable and having lots of people listen to her. Mari knew that Clary constantly worried about her, but was also worried for Clary as well. They were not exactly that close back at home but as they were in a new world, Mari was determined to be close with her sister this time.
Marissa nodded quickly, eager to look around the school grounds. Maybe they would meet other students whilst they were out at the greenhouses or whilst they walked along the corridors. She skipped over to her twin and linked arms with her with a bright smile. Marissa knew that Claryssa was probably nervous as well so she decided for Claryssa’s sake that she would try to hide her anxious ways and try to show her twin that she was perfectly fine. She twirled around a bit more with her sister for a few seconds before stopping, look at Claryssa to lead away. Marissa did not really know her way around yet.
