Private to Dymphna Teague and Reid Kovacs

The owlery was empty at that time, besides for the short prefect at a windowsill, a piece of parchment in front of her, being held down by her hand, a quill in her other one. She was so confused, she didn't know what to do. She couldn't stop thinking about him and she wanted to tell him, to try and figure out what it was that she was feeling. It was like he was stuck in her head, but the thought of him made her sad and happy at the same time. On the piece of parchment she had scribbled down multiple greetings, but not any words after it.
To Reid Dear Re Dearest Kovacs
She screwed up the piece of parchment, it was no use, if she can't even figure out how to address him, how was she supposed to explain how she felt about him? She didn't even know what exactly it was. She wanted to explain how happy she was when she saw his face, how sad she was when he had to leave, how panicked she felt when he was hurt. Delilah had never been so confused about anything, normally she knew all the answers and all of the solutions, and yet she was stumped. She moved over to one of the benches, crumpled parchment and quill still in her hands and sat on it. She leaned her head back against the wall. She was so frustratingly confused.

She threw the piece of paper into the corner of the room in anger, anger at herself for failing at even knowing what was happening to her. His face popped into her mind again, he looked angry at her too. “Get out of my head already.” She mumbled to herself, there was nobody there to hear her anyway, she could scream it from the windows, maybe the great lake would listen to her. Every time she saw him it just got worse, to the point where she just wanted to avoid him, but the part of her head that wouldn't be quiet kept trying to tell her to find him. She had managed to avoid him for the summer camp luckily, but she didn't know how long it would be until he would walk in and mess up her head again. She was 12, why did she have to feel something so complicated?

It was a late reply but the blonde was certain that her family would be happy to know that she was doing well. They knew that she made it to Hogwarts at least, the first letter being sent off during her first week back in school. The letter she was tying a dark blue ribbon around was weeks late but this way she had a much more interesting letter, about how well her classes were going and detailing how she and Reid had began their usual study sessions again.

After the weekend Reid spent at the inn over the summer, her father in particular had taken a liking to him. Something about bonding with a fellow Hufflepuff. Dymphna didn’t quite understand it but the fact that Reid was given a pocket watch that was passed down through generations of Teagues meant that her family wholeheartedly accepted him as one of their own.

The Teagues were an extremely loyal bunch and Dymphna fit right in with the rest of her family. There was no question as to why she became so attached to her friends in only a year of knowing them. Being away from home was hard enough without any friends and her parents were ecstatic when they received a letter during her first year about how she was getting along with her fellow students.

Many of her friends were from Ravenclaw House which was to be expected. Being a Reporter for The Diadem and joining various other activities opened her up to meeting students from the other Houses. Her closest friends seemed to at least know one another, if not be close themselves.

Upon entering the Owlery, she spotted a familiar face, someone that she saw everyday in the dorms. “Hey Del. What’s the story?” They saw a lot of each other but Dymphna couldn’t remember a time when they had gotten together just the two of them to chat and catch up. “Writing a letter home?”

She busied herself sending off her own letter, giving the owl a treat before watching them take off over the acres of trees towards the direction of home. Someday perhaps she would have an owl of her very own but for now, she was perfectly happy with her owl friends in the Owlery.

As she heard footsteps up the stairs, she composed herself, nobody needed to see her like this, she took pride over being smart. As the footsteps got closer she found herself wondering if it was Reid. Of course it won't be, there are so many people in this school, why would it be him? She thought, but upon seeing that it was Dymphna, she just slumped back against the wall again in annoyance.

"Hey Dymph." She said in a bland voice, her accent not coming out as rich as usual. Delilah sighed loudly, "Just confused about something." She admitted sadly. She stuffed her quill into her pocket as she asked about her writing a letter, "Not exactly, you?" She asked. Before it clicked in her head, Delilah was smart, Dymph was smart, maybe they could put their smartness together in figuring it out. "Hey Dymph, do you know a lot about....feelings?" She asked, her cheeks going pink. She wasn't sure why that happened either, she had talking toDymoh about most anything, but she was getting flustered overy this?

Delilah decided to just spill it, "There's this...boy...and I can't stop thinking about him...and I don't know what to do." She formed it like more of a question than a statement.  She was a little scared as to what would happen, she had a feeling this conversation wouldn't go too well.

At Delilah’s tone, the blonde finally turned to look at her. It was obvious that something was wrong. “I was too busy to write home until now,” she explained, her brow furrowed in worry. She didn’t want to pry but it wouldn’t hurt to make sure that her dormmate was okay.

As soon as she was about to speak, Delilah asked her about feelings. Oh, so that’s what this was all about? Was she feeling homesick? Poor Del, she thought, feeling a little homesick herself. Her summer had been a nice reminder that she truly was privileged — her parents were married and grandparents on both sides were doing well.

“A boy!” Dymphna exclaimed, unable to hide her glee. She wasn’t much for gossip but if her friend liked someone, she wanted to help. Did Del want to confess her crush to him? Oh no, that could end badly as it had with Bloom, but she seemed to have a successful first relationship despite her first crush not returning her affections.

The Ravenclaw took a moment to think. Sure, there were pros and cons but if she didn’t confess then wouldn’t she regret it? What if her friend missed out on an opportunity to have a happy relationship? “Tell him. The worst he can say is that he doesn’t like you back,” which would be mortifying. ”And if he doesn’t then you don’t have to waste anymore time thinking about him.”

As if it were that easy but Dymphna was still young herself and didn’t know any better. The only relationships that she had to look up to were within her family. Her parents seemed to be happy enough and she could only hope to have something similar someday. “Are you trying to confess in a letter?” How romantic!

Tell him that I like him? Is that what this is?  She thought, her first crush? On Reid? Should she tell him? Did she have to? She had so many questions. When she mentioned her writing a letter to him, she replied with, "I..I was trying to, I guess, I couldn't think of what to write. I could barely even write his name. I feel like I don't know him enough to do something like that, but he doesn't really talk about himself much." She looked over at the ball of paper in the corner with a frown.

Dymphna looked a lot more excited than Delilah did, Reid couldn't like her back, there was no way, she was short and boring and he..... well he wasn't. Despite Delilah's unknowing about his childhood and family except for the odd snippet, she could probably list a hundred compliments at the drop of a hat if somebody asked, well not literally, then she would seem creepy.

"I don't even know where he is if I was going to go and tell him now." She mumbled, "I wouldn't know what to say, I would make a fool of myself." She started rambling before she caught herself and sighed loudly.

Dymphna was finally able to take a peek at the letter, the scrawled words immediately recognizable. "Reid?" Her eyebrows shot up in surprise. "Your crush is on Reid?" Of course, why wouldn't it be? He was a fiercely loyal friend, someone who was both dependable and a shoulder to lean on. Nice, perhaps too nice at times and humble too. Suddenly, the blonde found herself without any advice at all.

"You wouldn't make a fool of yourself," Dymphna replied automatically, disliking the idea of her friend being so unsure of herself. Still, there was a lingering feeling that she couldn't quite put her finger on. It wasn't exactly a good feeling either but it was about Reid, a friend who continuously met with her for study sessions and whom her family adored so she shrugged it off.

Though she was insecure at times, the Ravenclaw didn't feel that way in her friendships. It was much more academically, fears of failing classes or doing poorly in front of others. How embarrassing it would be to muck up a spell with the whole class watching! Her Veela traits were making puberty a breeze compared to some others. "Let's try the Quidditch Pitch, that's our best bet."

Before Delilah could respond, Dymphna added, "Of course I'm coming with you. Strength in numbers and that." Despite the strange feeling in the pit of her stomach, she wanted the best for her friend and Reid was the best boy by far. She didn't think that so casually either. The blonde saw most boys as icky and not worth her time, simply because they were boys. Gross. Especially the ones that teased girls because they liked them. How ridiculous!

"A ligean ar dul," She started for the entrance but paused, "Would you rather write a letter or tell him in person?" Dymphna was very much a kid who hadn't been told no or rejected very much in her life. Since it was happening to her dorm mate and not to herself, it was a little easier to keep her emotions out of the situation. She had yet to experience a crush herself but it was likely that she would be more withdrawn and secretive about the whole thing, feeling it best not to confess at all.

In the case that Delilah was so nervous about it all, a letter might be best. Glancing at the parchment in Del's hand, she took the quill from her and began to write.

I know that we don't know one another well but you are a light in my life. You are such a kind and caring person, someone who people can really count on. Can we get to know one another better over breakfast tomorrow morning?

x Del

With a flourish, she handed back the quill and looked over her handiwork. It wasn't her best (not that she wrote love notes in the first place). She was quite proud of it, coming up with it on the spot. "Not too bad, right?" Now all they had to do was go down to the pitch. It was likely he would be there because when wasn't he these days? She shot a grin towards Delilah. "Deep breath in and out, then we'll go."

Delilah let out a small squeak as Dymph figured it out, she must have noticed the writing on the parchment, "Yeeeessssssss?" She said it like a question instead of an actual answer to her question. She was scared, even if Dymphna said that she wouldn't make a fool out of herself, she still thought that she would, she didn't want her friendship with Reid to be ruined. He wasn't going to feel the same way, she knew it, the thoughts raced through her mind, making her more worried and more terrified for what was to come.

She fiddled with the paper in her hands, trying not to show Dymph quite how terrified she actually was of losing him, yeah she had been avoiding him since before the holidays but she would have preferred to avoid him than have him avoiding her. "I'm gonna look stupid and he's going to hate me." She mumbled, "I know it."

When Dymphna said that he would probably be at the Quidditch Pitch she nodded, "Probably," She couldn't stop the fear that continued to grow inside of her, what if he never wanted to talk to her again? What would happen then? He was one of the few friends that had actually stuck with her, she didn't want to lose him but at the same time she wanted to be more than just his friend.

Why couldn't this just be easy? She watched as Dymph wrote the letter with a fake smile on her face, she was glad that Dymph wanted to help her but she was too worried to fully appreciate what she was doing for her. And just as they were about to leave, she could hear footsteps coming up to the owlery.

Reid was in a particularly weird mood, he had been corresponding with his parents daily about what was going on and something was brought up. Sadness was something he didn't wear very well and he wasn't keen on showing anyone how glum he was. He was after all, in a pretty magical place where it was hard to be exactly miserable. But he never anticipated people to be at the Owlery around the same time he was, not that he was actively avoiding people.

Though as he got up there, he realized that he was wrong and inhaled sharply to combat his feeling of heaviness. In the last five steps up the owlery, his posture pulled upright with a sense of dignity to go along with it, his dirt-stained hand came up to gently pat his cheek and to wipe the forlorn features. He smiled a little, but he could sense that it was very forced, he'd have to just roll with the punches and hope it holds up. Much to his surprise, it was two Ravenclaw girls that he knew pretty well, Dymphna and Delilah.

That was worse, he'd rather not make his friends concerned with personal matters since it was too early and odd to even talk about. "Evening." he greeted, holding a lopsided smile. "Just came to send a letter." He fixed his cardigan and approached one of the owls, letting it perch on his arm as he tied a letter to its leg. Reid took a treat out of its pocket, something that the owl could eat.

He fed it to the bird and gave it a headstart for it to fly, close to almost whipping around to exit. The student stopped himself in his tracks, worried that if he left too soon, he'd give himself away. The Hufflepuff occupied himself for a moment before he turned around to talk to the two. "How are your classes going?" Small talk, yes, that was a start.

His language betrayed him though, his hands gently buried themselves in his pockets and his brows came up a little to almost knit together. His shoulders seemed stiff and his eye contact was limited, it shifted sometimes at odd points of the room. Reid looked rather pained for a second, but he at least gave himself the chance to relax a moment later. He was so preoccupied with trying to look normal that he did the complete opposite.

The footsteps coming towards the owlery didn’t concern her until the Hufflepuff came walking in. It made her falter and she shot Delilah a look to see her reaction. Maybe it wasn’t the right time to confess but there wasn’t any way to tell her that without Reid overhearing.

He looked tired, tense. Something was wrong. Dymphna frowned, her eyebrows furrowed in concern, but should she bring it up? Would he want to talk about it? “Evening,” she replied. If he wanted to make small talk instead then that’s what she would do. The defeated look on his face when he turned toward them changed her mind however.

“Classes are fine but you’re not.” The blonde couldn’t help it. If he didn’t want to talk about it, she couldn’t force him but he had to know that they were here for him, to lend an ear or a distraction. If it was something about his own classes, she was prepared to spend extra time studying during the weekends.

Dymphna tried to catch his eye but his were darting around the room, perhaps not wanting to look at either of them. “We’re your friends and we care about you. What’s going on?” Her voice was quiet, gentle, almost drowned out by the various noises the owls were making.

It was a rather harsh feeling, one that he really didn't frequent often personally since his troubles were nothing but of the shallow king. But Reid was a fierce maverick in his ideals of not relying on people for emotional support, so it only was natural that he not share what he was feeling. There were issues with this too, one was he seemed like he didn't trust them and another was that he just seemed like he was holding things in. The latter was truer than the former, though his behavior in the past may have indicated that he was a far more open person with his troubles.

But in this case, he was not. Family strife was never a serious consideration till now and he was burdened with a lot of things. His parents had been right to be honest and upfront with him, they were having serious disagreements about his attendance at Hogwarts. His dad wanted nothing more than to have his son back home and attend a normal school to be a normal muggle, meanwhile, his mum wanted him to live in the wizarding world and to be immersed in it. In the end, he felt responsible for creating this rift, he wanted to be a wizard, but he wanted the approval of his dad so badly.

His letter had short and brief, to the point, but now he would have to explain himself to his two friends. Before Delilah would be able to chime in, he cut in rapidly to stop the both of them. "I uh - I can't." he shortly answered. His shoulders strained to hold the weight and sagged, yet he pulled himself upright soon after. "I appreciate it, I do, I just can't really talk about it. But ..." His shoe scraped the stone masonry of the floor. "I'm going to head back. Have a good night." Reid managed a brief smile, one that was as sincere as he could get it.

The young wizard gave a half-hearted wave and left the Owlery in a hurry, hoping he wouldn't be followed. He simply wanted to play football till it was near the curfew hours. He felt guilty already and felt even guiltier with brushing them off that way, but he was without a doubt trying to deal with it on his own. He took actions over words, he's never had to talk about what was on his mind, and he wasn't sure if he was ready to begin now. Reid knew they would have most likely respected his wishes, but it was hard to stay in a space where he knew that the others knew something was going on. He much rather have none of it for now.
EXIT.
