A Letter to the Angels PV Anastasia Completed

Skylar was cool, very cold, and she was pretty sure that she feathers covered her body. It sort of stank and birds were squawking around her, but what else could you expect from being in an owlery? This was her first time being in one, or any animal's home. There were so many birds, and according to somewhere or someone the size of the owls determined the speed of your delivery, not that it really mattered to her. The fact that her parents would receive her message was enough for her, except maybe the fact that she wished she could see their reactions when they got it.

While walking to the owlery she thought about either writing a poem, letter, or just enchanting the letter to do something funny, like screaming eternally or explode with slime, something that would tick her father off. Her mother was the only one afraid of owls but her father hated when something upset his wife, especially if it concerned Skylar, and Rachel just played the Peacemaker. She always had to ruin everything and make Skylar look even worse.

She had ended up just deciding to write a poem, something simple yet complex for their pea brains.

Hi Mum and Dad. And Rachel. Of course no one can forget about you, ever. I'm having a nice time here, I learned how to host pig heads onto stakes and fry trolls in cauldrons, but that's just the simple stuff. Sometimes we go hunt unicorns and use their bloodied horns as decorations in the dining hall. Basically I just wish you guys were here to join us.

But since you can't, I just decided to write this poem instead, so you can get the gist of it.

Frogs dancing upon our bedposts
Explaining how to burn a witch
And not longer afterwards they will
Roll around and twitch
Night is when the beasts come
Ogres, trolls, and a vampire
As we sing about our toils
No one ever thinks to tire
Grotesque gargoyles stew our meat
Evil elves pour our drink
Lunatic leprechauns pick our fruit
Sinister snakes say what we think

I hope you liked my poem, I worked very hard on it. I'll send you another sometime soon, but I'm busy these days beating up mermaids and faeries, if you understand.

Sincerely Unsincere,

When Skylar was finished writing, she quickly got out some pranking items she got from Wesley's. She walked over to the wall of owls, trying to decide which one she should pick. She was reaching for a small one when she heard someone nearby. Skylar turned around and saw another student a girl. She watched her and thought about showing her the letter. Maybe she should test if anyone saw the hidden message in it.. Her parents probably wouldn't be maybe this girl would.

Skylar greeted the girl. "Do you mind reading this poem I wrote? I just want to test if anyone would understand it."

Anastasia had meant to write her parents back for days, but it had kept slipping her mind. She'd been so busy adjusting to everything happening at Hogwarts that she hadn't actually gotten around to writing it until a day ago. Even after she'd written it, she hadn't sent it right away. She'd tried a few times but hadn't managed to, due to her leaving the letter in her room or not having enough time. She rather wondered how much of that was an accident and how much of it was her subconsciously avoiding it. She was normal quite thoughtful and on top of things, but she had been rather dreading writing her parents back after their last letter. As she reached the top of the stairs, she unfolded her letter and read it one more time to make certain that her parents would approve.
Gryffindor Common Room

My Dear Parents -
I am ever so sorry for the rather delayed response! I've been quite consumed with homework and classes, as well as a few other things. I've made several friends in my dorm, and I've seen some of my other friends such as Daniel and Aravis. Hogwarts is quite lovely overall. Flying class is simply thrilling, and History of Magic has an actual teacher now! He's quite interesting in my opinion. The charms teacher is also simply delightful and she gives us baked goods during class!

I also wanted to tell you that I joined the Gryffindor House paper! I know that you advised not to get too involved in the House, but I thought that it would be an excellent way to improve my writing skills.

Alas, I hear the call for dinner.
Lovingly,

Anastasia Blair Marie Katherine Alexandra Sophia Beckett
She chewed her lip as she remembered a few things she'd chosen to omit from her letter. She knew it wouldn't do much good to tell them about those issues, but this was the first time in her entire life that her parents didn't know everything about what was happening to her, and it was rather daunting. She felt like she was lying to them, even though it was really more just keeping a few secrets from them. She pushed those thoughts to the back of her mind as she neared the owls.
"Do you mind reading this poem I wrote? I just want to test if anyone would understand it."
Anastasia glanced at the other girl, a bit startled since she'd been so absorbed in her own thoughts. "Not at all," Anastasia said, her thoughtful expression giving way to her typical rehearsed smile.

"Okay, so here's the poem," said Skylar, holding up the letter so she could read it.

Skylar grinned. She was pretty proud of her work, especially the littler message hidden inside it. The girl seemed to be a Gryffindor so maybe she wouldn't understand it but it was worth a try. "I'll give you a hint: it has nothing to do with the silly stuff I wrote down, about the gargoyles and dancing frogs." If this girl got it, Skylar might even tell her what it meant to her, not that anyone really cared about her when she did. They usually just shrugged at her deep thoughts and feelings, which why she wasn't very open to anyone about things matter to her.

She pulled her cloak closer to her; she hated cold weather sometimes, especially in smelly rooms like this. Skylar glanced down at the girl's letter, not really reading it. "How many times have you been in here?"

Anastasia pursed her brow and read the poem. It was rather odd, and she knew that there was definitely a meaning beyond the immediate one of evil elves and vampires. She just hadn't the faintest idea what that might be. She was incredibly bright when it came to schoolwork and dealing with adults, but when it came to feelings, she was rather confused. Her parents had always looked down on any expression of just about any emotion, so coming to a place where students were more open about that was quite befuddling to Anastasia.

"It's quite interesting, but I must admit I haven't the faintest inkling what it means," Anastasia said, her cheeks flushing a bit. She hated not being perfect at something, not knowing exactly what she needed to know. It made her feel silly and out of control, which was one of the worst feelings for her. She wondered who this girl was writing that she could send something like that. Anastasia knew she would likely receive a Howler or something if she ever wrote her parents much less formally than in her current letter. "Who's it for?"

She glanced back over at the girl when she asked how many times Anastasia had been in here. It had only been a few times since this was just the second letter she was sending to her parents. "I believe it's my third time in here, what about you?" Anastasia replied.

Skylar squinted at the girl and pointed at the top of the letter. "Who's it for? It's for my Mum and Dad, just like yours!" But then she smirked sinisterly. "But they're Muggles so they don't know what's coming their way. My Mum hates birds, especially owls that carry letters from her magical daughter, so I'm pretty happy with this situation." She wondered if somehow the Ministry would stop her letter from reaching her parents, since it would be really suspicious to Muggles if random owls holding pieces of paper kept arriving at the Motting's House. But she was going to keep trying anyway until they stopped her.

Reading her poem again, Skylar decided it probably did have too much stuff in it to get what she was really trying to say. And the Gryffindor probably didn't consider all the aspects of a hidden message in a letter. Besides, when she told her it probably wouldn't make sense anyway unless she knew the background behind it.

"Well since I think that you look smart enough, I'm just going to tell you what it says." She shifted into an angle with more light so the girl could see better. "Okay, follow my finger." And she said each letter as she touched it.

Skylar read the letters out loud in words. ""Fear No Angels." She grinned. "I fear no heroes, I fear no knights, and I fear no angels, we all do bad things and no one has to the right to think they're 'all good', not matter what they did." She got lost in her thoughts as she put her letter back in the envelope and sent it off with an owl. She watched it fly away until it disappeared from view and then turned back to the Gryffindor.

"I've only been in here one time and this is it, but it won't be my last. But I wish I had more people to send letters to, wizard people, not stupid muggles... " She folded her arms and sighed.

Anastasia nodded when the girl said it was to her parents. She'd guessed as much. She rather wondered what it would be like to be able to be so flippant about her correspondence with her parents. Messages hidden in silly poetry, the overall attitude in the letter. She admired the girl a bit for it. She would never dare do something like that. It was a bit silly, since, just a few days ago, she'd literally chased a bird up a tree and then jumped out of the tree, but her parents were different. Anastasia knew that she could fix whatever damage she might do by climbing a tree or jumping out of it. She couldn't fix what her parents would do if they thought she was being disrespectful to them.

"That's quite clever, hiding the message like that," Anastasia told the girl. She almost wanted to try that in the next letter she sent to her parents, but she didn't dare. "But, if you don't mind me asking, why are you saying that to your parents?" She quite liked this girl's idea about how everyone did bad things. She of all people would know that - her parents pretended like the Becketts were so perfect, but three out of her four grandparents had been Death Eaters, and her cousin had been disowned. No matter how perfect they might pretend to be, no matter how much they tried to ignore the things about their family that weren't ideal, they weren't perfect.

"So, you're a Muggle-born then?" Anastasia asked the girl when she said she wished she had more people to send letters to. The girl had already said that her parents were Muggles, but maybe she'd been adopted. Anastasia had a few friends that were Halfbloods but had been adopted, so it was a possibility.

Skylar grinned at the compliment. "Thanks, I appreciate it!" She was starting to really like this girl, and she seemed nice enough, but Skylar wondered if she liked to have fun. She did a lot of crazy, weird things, mostly by herself, but she didn't mind that. Back home she did the same thing, just not around her parents. They already barely liked her anyway, worshipping her older sister Rachel who was the princess and got everything she wanted. She tried not to do too many stupid things but here at Hogwarts the limit was your imagination.

Thinking about her parents always angered and when she was too angry she became really violent, which is probably why when she first used her powers she aimed the cutlery straight at her family. Luckily she didn't kill anyone...she didn't think she wanted to kill anyone but sometimes she just got so mad. "It's kind of a long story," she sighed. "But basically my parents treat me like a pile of owl poop and my older sister like a mansion full of diamonds. Yes, they're dumb Muggles who just want to an excuse to hate me even more. All they do is get ashamed of me and call out all of my mistakes but they never think about what I'm good at." She rolled her eyes and sighed. "What about your parents? Do they think they're angels, too?"

Anastasia listened as the other girl spoke. She wanted to laugh a bit when she said that her parents could never see what she was good at. Anastasia knew exactly what that was like. She never felt like what she did was good enough for her parents, and they made it clear that it wasn't. Yet, at the same time, whenever they were in public, they fawned Anastasia like she was the perfect child. She found it a bit humorous that her parents, who hated Muggles and everything Muggle-related, could be so like a pair of Muggle parents.

"My parents have rather high expectations of everyone and everything," Anastasia began slowly. Despite what she might think about her parents, she'd never openly criticized them to anyone before. Her parents had always said that Becketts had to be a united front when it came to anyone who wasn't a Beckett. That meant that she could want to murder her cousin, but when they were around other people, they had to pretty much act like best friends. Anastasia hated it, but she also didn't know anything different. "And they like people to think that they're angels. Whether or not they truly are isn't as important."

Skylar thought about her own parents. They never were happy with anything that she did, even if she did get good grades in school or did something kind for other people. She remembered when once she helped their name weed out her garden and get rid of the pests that were eating up her plants. When her parents found out they smiled a little bit and said good job to her but as soon as the lady left, her parents ignored her and went back to their daily toils. And this made her so angry. Why did she have to live with such people? Why couldn't she have gotten loving parents who asked her how her day was, actually celebrated her birthday instead of just giving her a stupid birthday card--Rachel got a whole party, presents, and a flat screen TV for her room...and she was only sixteen!

Se balled up her fists, knowing her face was getting redder as she thought more about the things that made her mad. She wondered if all the times she got into fights because of the angle, was it rage? Did rage drive her to do dumb stuff she usually regretted deep down? Skylar was getting wary of this built up emotion, she couldn't control it sometimes and she was afraid something bad would happen because of it.

"My parents don't have any expectations for me at all, at least when we're alone. They treat me like their child when we're in public but at home it's like I'm a forgotten toy nobody wants to see anymore." She had a sour look on her face; Skylar looked back at the window, wishing she could've sent something worse than silly trinkets to her parents.

"Some day I'm going to get back at all the people who doubt me and my strength. I will show everyone how powerful I will be." She looked at the girl. "And then no one will laugh."

She sighed. "Of course on the journey to superiority one needs strength, and strength comes in numbers. I'll definitely need an ally; my name is Skylar Motting of Ravenclaw, apparently--would you be interested in being my ally?"

Anastasia listened as the girl talked about how her parents acted in public and behind closed doors. Anastasia rather wished she had a sibling. She had all of the expectations and rules of a perfect oldest child and all of the terseness and taking accomplishments for granted of a forgotten youngest. She knew that in nearly any of house, she would be lauded as the perfect child, but not in hers. No matter how hard she worked, it would never be good enough. It didn't matter if it was getting all O's on her assignments or her playing scales on the piano, it was never good enough.

Anastasia raised an eyebrow at the girl's words. She empathized with them more than she would have liked to admit. Her parents just wanted her to be an accomplished, well-bred, Pureblood princess, not be an Auror or anything else Anastasia might want to do. Anastasia was going to do something great someday. She was going to prove them wrong.

"I just might be," Anastasia said coyly. This girl was definitely speaking her language - offering an alliance as opposed to friendship, but she wanted to make sure things were clear. She had always been the alpha back home, and while she was willing to work with this girl as an equal, she was certainly not a minion, so if that's what this girl expected, they were going to have problems. "I'm Anastasia Beckett." It occurred to her that a Ravenclaw and a Gryffindor working together would be even better than a pair of Slytherins. No one would ever see them coming.
