Forsaken memories

♡♡♡♡♡
It was a grey, cloudy morning and most of gryffindor house were couped up in the common room, playing various games of exploding snap and wizards chess, otherwise eating honeydukes candy or doing homework and other various things. Ariana sat gloomily at a table in the far corner with a bunch of friends, attempting to finish her transfiguration homework. She impatiently tapped her quill on the desk groaning in frustration as she leant back in her chair. “I've had enough” she announced wearily, closing her textbook and stuffing it into her bag along with the unfinished homework. “I'm going to the owlery” She earned a few quizzical stares from her friends, “Alone.” She added.”I'll be right back don't worry” And with that she made her way out of the portrait hole entering the cold deserted corridors of the castle. She needed some fresh air and the time to think. She reached the owlery and collapsed onto the floor, fishing out a small photograph from within her robes. Ariana stared at it sadly for a while, watching the two young girls in the picture smile and laugh happily back at her. One of them had bright emerald green eyes and long silky brown wavy hair, the other had shorter darker brown hair and hazel eyes, her face looked young and carefree as she smiled through to the world she could not see. The similarities between the girls shone visibly through their pretty, young features; the same nose, the same shaped eyes, the same tanned skin tone...although this photo was taken ages ago...Ariana turned her focus more to the younger one watching her hazel eyes glint with happiness, watching her wave her hands happily around her head and then fling them around the second girl's midriff hugging her tightly.
A sharp tap on the head startled Ariana from her thoughts, and the photo of her and her younger sister slipped from between the girls fingers and was swept to the dusty owlery floor. Ariana fumbled to pick up the photograph and then stared quizzically up at the spot where she had just been. A handsome tawny owl sat on its perch, looking down at Ariana reproachfully with its large amber eyes. Ariana let out a surprised yelp. “Artemis! What are you doing here?!” She moved over to the owl and untied the unusually formal-looking roll of parchment from her outstretched leg. “I only just got a letter from home yesterday, I mean what and...why so formal?” She muttered to herself as she unrolled the parchment cautiously.
Ariana read through the letter again and again, standing there in numb disbelief. Artemis hooted indignantly from her perch as though annoyed at the lack of immediate response, but Ariana didn't hear her. The corner of her eyes pricked with angry yet sorrowful tears and Ariana blinked them back impatiently, trying to fight the grief that had overcome her. Of all days to tell her, today? They chose today to tell her? They had lied to her, her own parents and everyone around her, they had let her believe that there was some hope before. Why hadnt they just told her the truth? They had let Ariana live thinking that one day, her little sister would come back to her. But she never would. Her instincts kicked in and she ran.
