Wishful Thinking
⊰ ── '✧ ( ❝ ADELYN SINCLAIR !! ❞
indentAdelyn shuttered as she entered the Owlery, the open windows allowing for the chilly April air to wistfully dance into the enclosed room. While Adelyn had to grip her arms to remain warm and rub vigorously, the owls perched around her seemed more irritated that someone had allowed any heat into their cool chamber. However, the annoyance was soon quelled by some of the owls leaning forward in hopes that she might have a letter for them to send, where as others burrowed deeper into their dens, having of made long travels just days before - or just really not in the mood for an evening flight.
indentAdelyn, despite being covered from head to toe in a light shiver, was beyond delighted. She was hardly aware of how large owls truly were given that she had only seen them as whirs in the night. One small owl - either stunted in growth or a youngling, approached her cautiously a he hopped on the ground, peckin at Adelyn's shoes in a gentle manner as if trying to both catch her attention and see whether or not she was safe like the rest of the students. Adelyn went to pet the owl, who elongated its neck, having of developed a sense of trust for the blonde alarmingly quickly. "Oh, you're just a sweetheart, aren't you?" She giggled, brushing her fingers lightly over the small owls slick feathers.
indentStepping deeper into the den of the owls, Adelyn quickly got to
business. She wasn't entirely sure how an owlery worked, to be quite honest. As far as she was concerned, an owlery worked just the same as a mail room did - you had to go to pick up your letter. Little did she know that the owl system was much more like a personal mail man than a mailbox. That was why many of the owls - even the ones who had avoided being noticed earlier - peered down at her in confusion as they noticed the absence of a letter on the young girl. It wasn't as if she owned any of them, not as far as they were aware. Her scent was brand new... why had she came to the owlery otherwise?
indentAdelyn stopped in the center of the owlery, rocking back and forth on her feet in an awkward manner. Geez, this was awkward. She was sure none of the owls could really understand her but... how else was this supposed to work? "I'm looking for a letter from Marlowe...?" Some owls tilted their head, while a few others hooted quietly, echoing throughout the room, "... Marlowe Rowan?" Adelyn inquired again. Her voice shaked a bit on the second portion of her best friends name. She had met so many wonderfully nice people here, but none of them were Marlowe. No one could replace Marlowe.
indentThe First Year got down on her knees with her legs tucked underneath her as she no longer felt like standing up anymore. The owl who had came up to investigate her earlier now hopped to her side, nuzzling his fuzzy head against her thigh. Adelyn hadn't even realized she was crying until a tear drop splashed onto her skirt, in which she quickly tried to wipe it away with a sleeve covering her fist. She chuckled through a sniff at the sweet ow, remarking softly, "I don't think she's gonna write back, huh?"

Wishful Thinking
Reynolds was having a pretty fantastic day, classes had gone well, he had eaten a good lunch with Liv and studied with Aly, and he hadn’t seen Will all day. In fact, he had been so busy with things he had nearly forgotten about the letter to his dad he had written the night before. Paranoid that he would somehow get held up or they would change the curfew time, he had rushed up the winding stairs to the owlery. He usually liked going up to the top landing because it had a better view, but that night he went straight to the first landing for time’s sake. Even though he wasn’t really pressed for time.
His most recent letter to his dad was more updates on classes, he was really getting psyched about quidditch. Aly had been filling him in and they talked about it almost constantly. He knew his dad would probably say no, but he had asked if he could have a broom anyway. His birthday and Christmas weren’t for a long time, but maybe if he started asking early he would be able to wear him down before the holidays came around.
Reynolds pushed open the door to the first landing. A breeze whipped through the glassless windows, stirring up the straw at his feet. He didn’t mind that. What he did mind was the wind picking up the smell of owl poop. Shouldn’t there be a way to make all of it disappear through magic? Or a smelling spell that would make it smell like roses and daisies?
Trying not to breathe in the smell too deeply, he started to reach for his letter, already prepared and ready to go, in the folds of his robes. But he stopped short when he realized the figure on the ground next to the birdbath was not a large owl but a human girl. He was pretty new to the experience of having friends, only just really having accepted Aly and Liv as real friends. But he had learned enough to know from the body language and the fact that she was sitting on the ground talking to an owl probably meant she wasn’t happy.
His first instinct as always was to back away slowly and pretend like he had never been there. He was close enough to the door still that he could probably sneak back out and go to the second landing. Hopefully, there wouldn’t be a sad girl there too. He took one step back but hesitated. Should he leave her alone like this? He knew that if it were him he would want to be left alone, he would be horribly embarrassed if a stranger just approached him at random and tried to console him.
Yet he knew that if it were Aly or Liv, or even Lilia, sitting on the ground there, they would probably want to be approached. They would want someone to say something nice or friendly. They wouldn’t be embarrassed. Thinking of them, he spoke without thinking.
“Hey, um, are you okay?”
Immediately after the words were out of his mouth he regretted it. What were these girls doing to him? He never would have talked to her if he hadn’t thought of them. He let go of the letter in his pockets, knowing that his palms would be sweating soon. He braced himself, though he wasn’t quite sure what for.
