My dearest Cala,
"I am pleased to see that we have differences. May we together become greater than the sum of both of us."
You remember that one, don’t you? I’m pretty sure we haven’t watched that show in months. Maybe when you return for the summer, we can watch it again. My Saturdays are so boring without it, but I can’t re-start the tradition without you here. If you don’t want to watch it with me, you don’t have to. But I’m always here if you’re up for it.
In any case, I think this is a good quote to remember. I know you’ve changed recently, and I support you. Just remember that the kids at your magic school will all be different. They might not be what you’re looking for in a companion, but finding someone with the right amount of opposition to you will make your friendships stronger.
I hope you write back.
I love you so much,
Mum.

Anger surged through Calanthe’s veins. How dare her mother’s tone be filled with such tenderness? She was practically mocking her daughter. Being okay with her new looks? Tolerating her rude personality? Supporting her? What a joke.
Resisting the dire urge to tear the letter into little pieces, Calanthe crumpled it tightly instead. When she got back to her dorm, she would likely toss the thing into her trunk with a pile of five other balls of paper.
Five letters. Six now. Her mother had written to her six times since she arrived at Hogwarts. Her persistence almost made Calanthe want to give up; to write a love-filled letter detailing all the amazing things she had been witness to since attending the school and sending off the letter with a calmed heart. However, Calanthe’s own tenacity refused to let her mother off the hook that easily. The woman could write a letter for every day that Calanthe was away and the girl would force herself not to reply.
But what if dad writes?
She did not know what she would do. Her father had yet to send a letter to Hogwarts. According to her mother’s last letter, Janus still had not returned home nor had he inquired about his daughter’s life. She felt the same burning anger towards him too. This isn’t my fault. Why is he mad at me? But she was still hoping, with the shred of affection still left for him, that a letter arrived from his new address. She hated him just as much as her mother, sure, but a little part of her understood his reaction to the events that transpired before she left for Hogwarts.
Her vision became cloudy and tears threatened to spill down her face. Ashamed for crying over her good-for-nothing parents, she resentfully tossed the ball of paper across the owlery’s second landing with a resounding cry. Before the paper could hit the ground, a cool autumn breeze blasted through the glassless windows, picking it up and blowing it down to the first landing. With another pathetic shout, Calanthe chased after the letter. She was able to grab it before it blew out of the tower’s entrance and she placed her arm on the wall for support, heart beating rapidly.
Oh, thank Pelor –
Realizing she succumbed once again, Calanthe slammed her open palm against the wall. Pain shot up her arm and she grabbed her palm, massaging it with her other hand, the crumpled letter sandwiched between. Backing towards the owl bath, she collapsed on the edge, willing herself to cry no more.
