❝Five minutes to midnight found me standing near the entrance to my classroom in wait. Tonight was the night that I had planned for meticulously over the past couple of months, and it was finally time to see all my hard work given action. The owls had been sent, and the time and place had been highlighted clearly for the select few to see. If they knew me, and they should considering I personally chose them for this journey, then they would also know that I was not one for tardiness. I would not hesitate to point those that arrived even a minute late back to their dorms, as lateness simply told me that the interest is lacking. I needed only those that would maintain some level of serious comportment, lest all my efforts are for nought.
As soon as they were all in attendance, I would get down to the meet of the matter without further ado. "Charmed. I imagine the context of my letters left much to ponder? Fear not, for this will be a night none of you will soon forget." Resting along the walls next to the door they would see five simple brown and leather backpacks. I quickly retrieved them and handed each their own. "You will notice that each of these are partly filled with bottles of liquids varying in colour. These are potions, ones that I advise that you each take special care for." I reached for the bag that I had handed Ms. Fawley, retrieving some of the contents within and holding them up for all to see.
"This first one is known as the Exploding Potion. The name speaks for itself, but I would like to stress the importance of not triggering an explosion near any faults that might coerce the building to collapse. And for the sake of it, I also advise against blowing yourselves up." I reached for the next. "I am sure you are all aware of this one?" I stared pointedly at Mr. Deathmote, one of such students who have yet to complete any of my assignments, and as such would not know what this was unless he has done some special reading. "The Antidote to Common Poisons." Nothing more needed to be said. "Next we have one with many similarities, yet differences all the same. The Antidote to Uncommon Poisons. Where the former treats non-magical poisons, this one may treat those of a more magical nature. A Doxy bite, for instance."
I reached for the others and went through them quickly. "The Vitamix Potion which will heal major injuries sustained. The Fire Protection Potion that...protects from fire. The Burn-Healing Paste that can be used to soothe burn injuries. And lastly, the Revive Potion, which you may use to resuscitate an unconscious ally." In all there were twenty-five potions, and they would find that not all of them had what the others had [see below for allocation]. I handed the bag back to Ms. Fawley and retrieved my wand. "Now I shall be teaching you lot two new spells that you may find useful for the coming journey. I've noticed this school's penchant for burning, and as such, I believe this one will be especially useful." Pointing my wand at a pile of prepared wood, I cast Incendio, causing the thing to burn. "Neque Ignis" The fire vanished instantly, the only evidence of it ever having been there the charred remains of the wood.
"The Extinguishing Charm. It puts out fires of any kind, though keep in mind that larger fires may be harder to combat alone." I quickly transitioned into the next spell, first pointing to a lone, blank parchment laying on the floor. "Aparecium" Without delay, my spell's intention travelled and revealed a list of potions in full detail. In truth, this list showed the seven potions that they carried, naming properties, effects and the like. "This is known as the Ink-Revealing Charm. It is used to force the revelation of things written in invisible ink, or it may also reveal secrets in the form of hidden messages and the sort." I picked up the parchment and handed it to Mr. Deathmote. "You may each try the spells until you meet success. Please do remember that we don't have all night." I would step aside and let them cast the spells as I had demonstrated before. The pile of wood would serve to teach them the extinguishing charm, and the parchment in Mr. Deathmote's hand would serve as the source of learning for the ink-revealing charm, as I would make the words disappear and watch them cast the spell to make them reappear.❞

Inquiries for the Future
Dear Professor Valtome,
It has come to my attention that I have failed the last lesson of my first year and it with a heavy heart that I write this owl to you. Potions, in the start, was quite a dull class for me during our first lesson, with the esteemed Professor Rosemary G. Ethel. To say I wasn’t interested was an understatement, but then you came to school and I found my interest in the subject peaked again and not just by the facial features you have as a half elf. From when you signed on, you taught potions in a new way, and a way that I was interested in, and most importantly, a way that I understood. From that moment forward,I decided that potions was a subject that I wanted to get into. Not only that, I potions is also a lesson that I will need in order to accomplish my life long dream of becoming an auror. I find that I love to experiment with different reagents and try to find out more efficient ways to prepare draughts and concoctions, maybe discovering something entirely new in the process. Potions has many uses in our society, and I want to learn as much about it as I can, which is why I write you this owl before my first year at Hogwarts comes to a close.
As a student that enjoys potions, I write this letter to you, to plead for your aid in potions and your consideration whatever potions mentorship options that might extraneously occur in the foreseeable future. My last grade is irredeemable, as I’m keenly aware with every passing day, but you did promise extra lessons if I asked for them, and I assume you to be a man of your world. Which I do, I implore you for any way to bring my grade up, or a way to redeem myself in your eyes. My dedication to potions is one that I did not expect, yet I’ve come to cherish, as the year has come to an end. Indubitably, potions is one of the subtlest and most difficult of all the various types of magic that is taught at Hogwarts, requiring patience and actual effort, instead of waving your wand around in circles and hoping for something to happen. There is more opportunity for errors of comprehension, judgment, and practice than in any other branch of magic. It is with this in mind that I must mention my own grievous error of comprehension in regards to our final lesson, in the hopes that you will understand my pain and the point I try to make in asking for an opportunity at whatever adventures or mentorship shall arise, and at extra potions lessons.
The simple travesty involving my own misreading of your instructions is an avoidable tragedy, but a mischance that occured nonetheless. I assure you I have suffered enough over this unfortunate grade, and I implore you to consider me as an avid, congenial student of the subtle science of Potion Making. To prove my claims that I am a good potions maker, I would like to remind you of the glorious praise you have put on my other pieces of homework, and the fact that I attempted the Ageing Potion, and although I failed in the end, you acknowledged my attempt was well off, which I feel proves my adeptness at potions.
It is a fact, one that many students and adults have suffered through, but understand, that there are mistakes on certain lessons and on certain homework assignments. Yet, do our mistakes truly define us? Evidently, most would argue that our mistakes make us stronger, that they help us grow. A simple mistake does not define us, it pushes us towards trying our hardest in the future. Or at least, I know my mistake will push me to try even harder in potions, to cross every leap, to brew every potion, to read every instruction over and over again until someday you consider me redeemed again.
This letter is a sincere apology from me for my grievous error, but it is also a plead to still consider me for any future endeavors in the class of potions. If there is a way to make up the grade, in any way, shape, or form, I will do it. I ask for you to understand my will to excogitate my future homework in attempts not to fail so miserably again. All I ask from you is a way to help me fulfill my dreams of potions, in any way you can, whether that be extra lessons or the mentorship that I plead you offer to me, if it ever occurs. (I am assuming that other professors may follow Ms.Leonie Scheinberg’s lead in mentorship options) If this is the case, I would like to know what I may do to redeem myself in your eyes.
Looking forward to an owl in response,
Eris Fawley,
First Year Gryffindor.
She had not done well on the last potions homework, but Eris Fawley was nothing if not determined. She had not expected, nor prepared, for enjoying potions, but somehow, she found herself entertained by the magical cooking show that she partook in, every day of Potions class. (If the class was magical cooking, one could easily assume that Professor Valtome was Gordon Ramsey, and that Eris was an idiot sandwich.)
The one bad thing about being invited on the potions adventure was that a dictionary would not be accompanying Eris on her travels throughout the Dungeons. How was one to communicate with Professor Valtome without an extensive library of vocabulary words, and a dictionary to research words with? Eris had no idea, which was why late night study sessions had become a habit for the young girl, who would of much rather preferred anything really, to studying.
Two days had not been enough time to learn all of the fancy words that Valtome might of brought up, but the sight of the small girl dozing in the common room with a heavy dictionary on her lap had become a common occurrence in the Gryffindor tower. Eris's hatred of coming off as smart had faded away, replaced by a fervent urge to prove herself to the Professor that had offered her a second chance, when second chances were so hard to come around, and even rarer to
She would need to prove herself if the request Eris had ruminated upon making would pull through. Already, she had relied heavily on the kindness of the half elf, which she knew lingered somwhere under his skin, even if whatever heart Professor Valtome had was hidden under his managed locks of hair and the wittiness he had, combined with unprofessional rudeness that irked Eris.
Even though he irked her, Eris managed to drag herself out of the common room twenty minutes before midnight, setting down the dictionary that had sat in her lap for . Her robes were still on, as the girl had figured that wearing anything other than her robes would be seen as childish, and she was not in the mood for displeasing professors. The only problem was her hair, which Eris still had no control over. The cut of her hair was short, like her normal red hair, and in the darkness, it looked red enough to anyone who wasn't staring.
Yet, if one had the misfortune, or fortune, to look upon Eris's hair carefully, they would see that her hair was dark pink, not it's normal shade of red. Ever since her day at the lake with Rhea, Eris's hair changed as often as the small girl's moods. Mostly shades of pink and red, the lengths varied from long to short, and as hard as Eris tried, her hair would not comply with her wishes, and acted of it's own freewill.
Being a metamorphamagus wasn't fun, especially when you had no control of your powers.
She showed up to the dungeons a few minutes before 12, and quickly hustled over to where the Professor stood-no, was situated. That sounded better, right? She would have to work on her grammar, making it nicer, even in her head. If Eris was to survive this night, she would have to attempt an amazing vocabulary, just like Valtome.
There was only a moment alone, before the rest of the group arrived. It was sad that Dorian, the other Gryffindor that Eris knew enjoyed potions. Apparently, he hadn't shown up for the adventure. Eris wasn't sure how, exactly, students got picked for Valtome's adventure, but Dorian was not among the ranks. Even so, the similar-looking girl with similar smarts and a habit for eating celery was there in the crowd, and Eris signaled to the ravenclaw prefect with the hand that wasn't clutching her wand, just as Valtome started to talk.
Eris snapped to attention as Valtome spoke, paying close attention to his words. So far, all her adventures had gone wrong, and she had heard tell of adventures gone wrong. If professor Valtome was hosting the adventure with his normal callousness, it was clear that Eris would need to pay attention, to insure no more chaotic adventures.
A bag was handed to Eris, than removed, than handed back to her again. The contents, apparently, were potions, and it was with utmost care that Eris strapped the backback to her own back, holding tightly onto the leather straps with both hands, wand slipped back into the deep pockets of her robes until futher notice, which was given in the form of two new spells.
Still careful not to drop the bag, or move any of the potions inside of it around too much, Eris let go of the straps of the bag, allowing the bag to hang from her shoulders without the added pressure of her hands. Pulling her wand out again, Eris ventured over to the log and the parchment, preparing to cast the spells.

Kyden had been thrilled to receive the Owl about this special lesson/adventure. When he had first met Professor Valtome he had to admit that he was extremely intimated by the half elf. He had been terrified about disappointing the man and was quite pleased with himself that that hadn't happened. At least not yet. Kyden actually find himself loving potions and in turn really liking Professor Valtome.
Instead of heading up for bed with the rest of the Slytherins, Kyden had hung around the Common Room waiting for it to be time to meet the Professor and whoever else had been invited to participate in this exciting adventure. Once it was time he quickly excited the Slytherin Common Room and headed to were he saw Professor Valtome and the Gryffindor who he was pretty sure was named Eris or something like that.
He smiled and nodded a quick hello. He stood waiting for the others to arrive. Once everyone that Professor Valtome had gathered Kyden was quite surprised and slightly pleased that he was the only Slytherin Professor Valtome thought worthy to participate. Kyden stood listening to everything Professor Valtome told them about the potions they would find in the backpack.
He walked over and picked up the bag meant for him strapping it securely to his back and waiting to be taught the two new spells they would need to know for this adventure. He was slightly nervous as he was sure that anything Professor Valtome threw at them would be difficult. However he knew that Professor Valtome wouldn't have any of the students here if he didn't trust them and have faith in their abilities to succeed in the tasks that would be laid before them tonight.
One would think that the students would be exhausted at this time of night. He couldn't speak for the others but Kyden was way to stoked to even think about the possibility of sleep. He watched intently has Professor Valtome demonstrated the two new spells to them. He took care to watch closely the motions he made when casting the spells. Once told to do so Kyden walked over to the wood and the student that Professor called Mr. Deathmote, who was holding the parchment they would practice on and set to practice with the others.

Potions Class

This professor was dangerous, perhaps the most dangerous out of all the staff in Hogwarts. His deadly grace made Kaegen want to avoid him like the plague. But he had gotten that letter, an invite. If Kaegen knew anything about anything, that letter was a threat, masked underneath a thin veil of pleasantries. And Kaegen was not going to go up against someone like that. And so here he was, in a dark dungeon, walking on hard floors. With the living ball of confusion herself next to him and the resident apex predator of Hogwarts in front of him.
He had stared at him during the explanations of the various bottles. Kaegen immediately forgot most of them, but one stuck. An exploding potion. A bottle of liquid that made a explosion big enough to possibly bring the entire school of Hogwarts to its knees. Of course, he would have to be careful so as not to kill himself in the process. Besides, it wasn’t like he wanted to destroy the school. Maybe destroy the professor so he wouldn’t find himself in a potions pot one day. Or maybe figure out if Eris is still Eris or some monster pretending to be Eris.
And then a horrible thought struck him. He mindlessly held the paper as his tired, heavy lidded eyes widened more and more. The professor was a predator, a apex creature of the most devious kind. Eris was possibly a chameleon ghoul, or one of the chameleon ghoul’s relatives. The ones he didn’t know existed. How else could she change like that? He himself was a predator, albeit a minor one. If you followed that logic, then the nondescript boy next to him must be…
They were going to die, the professor was going to kill them all. He was giving them a fighting chance with the potions, he wanted a challenge. Kaegen’s face looked chalky white and horribly sickly in the firelight, those he knew him would realize that his skin usually looked like that, but it was disturbing nonetheless. His eyes were now wide open, heavy lids all but vanished, eyes staring ahead at the professor, not budging except for a twitch every few seconds, the pupils starting to dart in one direction but stopping themselves before they actually went anywhere. The eyes were usually dark, but they looked positively black in the gloom of the dungeons, appearing like shining spots of ink, trying to penetrate the invisible defenses and illusions they imagined were put up all around the potions professor.
His hands started to reach slowly, smoothly for the potion vials in his pack, all while staring straight ahead at the professor, eyes still twitching, obviously trying to get better looks at the students next to him. He started to slip the potions into his robe, stowing them in one of his own leather padded pouches, strapped to his body underneath his robe with a multitude of leather straps and belts. The boy’s fingernails were long and dirty, coming to dull points. His hands were slender and had scars on them from where his fingers had been a bit too slow when handling dangerous substances and creatures he had failed to recognize as such at the time.
His scarf was grey, and light, and as out of place as the rest of him. The color of mist and fog and smoke, covering the boy’s chin and laying down flat on the black robe that was far too large, covered with patches and hastily done repair jobs. It even looked like acid had found its way onto the left sleeve. The hair was equally disheveled, black, dirty and a bit too long. Clumps had been burned off, and some dirt could clearly be seen. Alongside the clean, pink haired girl and the decent looking slytherin, Kaegen stood out like a sore thumb. A dirty, terrified sore thumb.
His large black robe sleeves hung empty by his sides as his fingers gently closed around a familiar handle. His slingshot, used for hunting, was easily powerful enough to kill. At least, it was if you got enough pullback to it. And the way things were starting to look, he doubted his chances of getting a good shot in before being torn apart by the professor’s spells were very high. Still, he wasn’t going to go down without a fight. Not here. Not like this.
The two opposing forces in the boy’s brain constantly fought each other. Survival VS Curiosity. In cases like these, however, survival consistently won. And survival refused to die. Not now, not ever. If there was a way to survive everything, Kaegen was going to find it. But for now, he would have to settle for surviving this second, this minute. And then this hour. Surviving a natural death won’t be a concern if you die before your natural death has time to rear its ugly head.
The boy fed a small stone into the slingshot, and pulled the little string in the lining of the pouch, pulling it tight enough to keep the stone in, even if he wasn’t holding it with both hands. If he tripped backwards, pretending it was an accident, he could probably shoot at the professor from underneath his robe, between his feet. It might catch him off guard, but on the other hand, it was kind of obvious. Well, obvious if you knew the ravenclaw had a slingshot under his robes. The loose folds served to disguise his movements enough so it was less than obvious, especially in the dim lighting.
But in case this was his last chance to practice the spells, he should probably work on his technique. Tucking the still loaded slingshot into a leather strap under his robe, he pulled out his wand and began to go over the words in his head. His lips moved to mouth the words but no sound came out. This happened again, and again. If hunting hat taught the boy anything, it was that you wanted to get it right on the first try and prepare beforehand. He did the wand motions again and again, going over the steps required to launch a perfect spell. You had to have precision of wand movement. This step wasn’t all too complicated, it just took some practice. You had to have enunciation. If you messed up the words then you messed up the spell. An you had to have concentration. It was here that Kaegen was meeting a stumbling block.
Curiosity had regained its footing, and was fighting for Kaegen to focus completely on the spell. It was something new, something interesting. Something that could really help him in the future. The utility of an instant fire-extinguisher was off the charts. But on the other hand, if he concentrated on the spell, then he wasn’t going to be able to concentrate on the professor. In this fight, curiosity won. The allure of a new skill to great to overcome. The boy concentrated, and went over the spells over and over and over again until he was sure he had them down perfectly. Until he was sure that there was no way he was going to mess it up.
”Neque Ignis"
It launched perfectly, extinguishing the small fire. This could help him if he chose to escape. He could douse the torch nearest the professor, leap to the side and back, firing off a sling stone. The element of surprise would be greatly intensified. It would have a better chance of working then just pretending to stumble. Filing that thought away for later, Kaegen moved on to the next spell.
"Aparecium"
This spell did not do so well as the last one. Survival had started to win the fight once more, pulling forth anxiety as a final, last ditch attempt at control. Anxiety about not doing the spell right the first time around, about being weak and vulnerable and pathetic.
Kaegen tried one more time, trying to concentrate, to use tunnel vision as much as possible. Imagine that the spell was the only thing that existed, the only thing in the world. It worked, it was working. Kaegen’s mind was blank, the only thing that existed was the spell. The spell, and Eris. The spell, Eris and the Professor. The spell, Eris, The Professor and the other boy. The spell, Eris, The Professor, the other boy and death.
"Aparecium"
Another failed attempt. Kaegen’s mind was threatening to fall completely into turmoil unless he did something. So he did. He bit down on his cheek, as hard as he dared. He didn’t bite hard enough to draw blood, or at least he didn’t taste any. But he did bite hard enough to feel it a lot, feel it enough to use the pain as a ground to pull himself out of his own thoughts. Before the pain wore off, he tried to focus on the spell again. Tried, and succeeded.
"Aparecium"
As soon as he recognized the minor victory the dark eyes shot back to the professor as fast as they could go, a miniature blur as he reassured himself that the professor had not made his move yet. He would put the slingshot idea on hold until he knew that the predator was done teaching them everything he had planned on teaching them. If he missed his chance and was about to die, the young boy made a promise to himself. If he was going to go he would use the exploding potion and bring the professor down with him.

There was no disappointing anyone tonight.
Scott was already determined to make up for the embarrassment that had been Professor Valtome's practical pressure test, or rather his failure to execute it as well as he or the Professor had hoped and expected. Although he was well aware that no one else had succeeded, either, this made no difference to him.
Competition had never been one of his concerns.
Pleasing others, had always been.
And although this might not always work in his favour (the world is, after all, not yet such a generous place), at least he couldn't feel anything but satisfied with where it had taken him so far.
"Where", of course, being the dungeons after curfew.
The cold walls seemed as if both taller and closer together by nighttime. Naturally, Scott had always had a bit of a fear of these basements, and he was fairly certain that only Slytherin students or the Professor himself could ever really get used to the feeling that creeped down here- but it didn't bother him all too much.
It was excitement he felt most, and it pushed everything else aside.
Excited with feeling selected and, though he wouldn't tell you this, with feeling clever.
When he reached the potions' classroom, or rather the door there to, Scott could see that Professor Valtome was already there with three other students: one girl and two boys, and even though he didn't recognise either of them for real, he waved somewhat distractedly in their direction- being polite whilst also aware of how professional he should appear.
This was an academic experience, after all. Making friends, he had to repeatedly tell himself, would only be a bonus.
One more girl showed up, and then Valtome began his explanation. Which was good, because the letter had been vague, but no less intriguing for that.
Scott was, along with the others, handed a brown leather backpack. In it, he was told (and in opening it informed), were a number of glass vials and containers. They held potions, and Valtome explained each their effects- eyeing the five of them when describing uses and misuses.
Scott's eagerness grew with every piece of new information, with only a slight cringe by the mention of the antidote. At least it didn't seem they'd be regaining somebody's conscience. That was a relief, and when they were instructed to practice two new spells then the blunder was all forgotten again.
Neque Ignis and Aparecíum.
Scott brushed his blonde hair out of his eyes, unnecessarily pulled up his already too-short uniform sleeves, and got his wand out to start practicing.
There was no disappointing anyone tonight.

All right, that was her second bar of chocolate for the day. And all right, maybe she could've not skipped dinner and ate real food for once, but the chocolate was so much better than actual food. Besides, two bars of chocolate still didn't add up to a full meal. Minus saccharum debeo manducare were the words, words that were a little joke between her and herself: I should eat less sugar. Then again, if she ate less sugar, she probably wouldn't be eating half of the already measly amount of food she consumed, so the answer would be a no.
The last little bit of chocolate was popped into her mouth, chewed until the unique taste was driven out of the sweet, then swallowed as she approached her Potions professor. Her fingers were not sticky; she kept them clean, a good thing to do when nearing an expedition such as this one. Actually, the only reason she had decided to take to the chocolate was for the trip into the dungeons itself-- just so she'd have a burst of energy before she set up. Her thoughts went faster with sugar and dopamine in her head; they did not become scrambled, thankfully. Besides, her excitement was enough to keep her hurricane brain in check.
As Professor Valtome spoke, Cel felt the tingle of a smile softening her features and allowed it to do so. It existed for two reasons: One, for the mellifluous consistency of his speech, and two, in anticipation of what was to come. Carefully she made note of each provided potion in her mind, reviewing every detail she had learned of them and their ingredients quickly, swiftly. Each she recognized, each she recalled. The grin formed for a split second as she heard the words Exploding Potion-- it disappeared in a flash, as fleeting as her smiles were, into the crisp night air.
Two people there, she recognized-- Kaegen and Eris-- the others, not so much. Every face she'd encountered in her school year, she had remembered from hallway passings, but she had only spoken to these two and none else, and the latter was signaling at her, to which she responded by offering a small wave back accompanied by a tiny, barely-there grin. As the half-elven professor continued to introduce potions, she took a peek into her own, already analyzing and calculating how they might be utilized in any situation, excitement and curiosity taking over.
Even the others' potions were not spared from her scrutinization as she found that not every described potion was available to herself-- she was imagining, dreaming, scheming again. The dreamer, the schemer, she was, both of the two. Perhaps they should share what potions they each had; a plan would be in better order if the group decided to later make one, whatever they were supposed to do-- or they could improvise. Both ways would have better chances of triumph-- triumph over what, she still didn't know-- if they gathered as much information of their collective inventory as possible... at least if each would be kind enough to be willing.
Tonight she wore her robes as usual, though she'd changed into another set of clothing-- normal outdoor clothing-- that was soft enough and clean enough on her skin, relatively thick cotton for the icy cold of the dungeons. The hoodie she wore read Witty, Weird, and Wise, each word below its predecessor, while its back read Werifesteria, another great word that did not quite match those on the front of the garment, but was not any less beautiful anyway. The word was Old English, meaning something like the feeling of walking through the woods or something close to that, and she loved it.
Her attention quickly turned back to Professor Valtome as she noticed his teaching of a new spell-- no, two new spells. Quickly she flicked her wrist outward, allowing the chestnut wood of her wand to slide into her hand from her sleeve, and then she was raising her wand, the incantation on the tip of her tongue. She stalled. Think, think first. Get ready first. Focus first. Easy enough, with the chocolate in her system... all right, that didn't actually work, but it made her happy enough not to resent the trip-- not that she'd resent the adventure anyway, but it was quite near midnight, after all, and the chocolate kept her wide awake.
Wasn't it funny-- or perhaps not so much funny as ironic, or at least amusing-- that so many spells were in Latin, the language in its posthumous glory? Quite convenient for Cel, at least. For her only, or for those who understood the Dead Language. A lowering of her wand, and then she raised it again, summoning the alacrity necessary for the two spells that she needed to practice, and practice well, for whatever task the- professor had put ahead of them.

❝Practice had gotten underway, and aside from very few bumps in the road I could honestly say there was hope for these five yet. Good. They would need to be fast learners if they wished to prove to me that they have what it takes to succeed. With a dismissive wave of my hand to indicate that they could stop before they poked an eye out, I pointed down the length of the dimly lit corridor illuminated by a gentle, eerie glow that filtered in from cracks in the walls and further along the path. I was eager to get the journey started, but first I needed to let them know what it is that I expect of them. "As you may have already surmised after conning my letters, we are to venture into the depths of the dungeons beyond the threshold that any of you have been given leave to cross. I have taken the liberty of actuating obstacles and the like of which I suspect that none of you will have too much trouble bypassing."
Without any indication that I wished for them to follow, I turned and started on my way deeper, expecting that they would take the hint and follow-suit without the need for me to say so. I would not coddle a soul. "Have any of you paused to consider the power that you possess apart?" I allowed them a few seconds to consider this. "Now have you considered the power you possess together?" I gave them another moment's reprieve to ponder my words. My pace was measured, but my long strides might make it somewhat difficult for their short prepubescent legs to keep up. It would be clear what I was getting at in a moment. "By this, I mean your employment of teamwork. Imagine all that can be achieved when people pool their strengths toward one common goal?" A bit preachy, but I was nothing if not a compelling speaker. My words were layered with a mesmerizing cadence that could lull even a dragon into a docile state.
As I lectured to them, as that is what this is; a lecture, I led them down several winding paths and corners that had long since been ensconced in memory, using my words and commanding presence to keep their attention. "I took the liberty of installing an obstacle that I believe will better serve to translate my vocables into practice. If I am not mistaken we should be... Ah!" There it was. Directly before us stood an imposing mass of stone barring our path. I turned to face them with a thin smile, ghostly platinum eyes flitting from one to the next in assessment. "You have all learned the levitation charm I presume?" A question asked in rhetoric, for I knew all who had learned the spells from each class and who had not. I took several steps forward to stand among them, and then with gentle nudges, I urged them ahead, closer to the stone as I stood behind and watched.
"A combination of strengths. I wish to see each of you work together to remove this obstacle. Force it to the side using the charm so that we may be on our way. For those more confident in their physical prowess, feel free to manhandle the stone in aid of your peers." All I expected of them was to work in tandem with their spells or their strength to move the boulder aside. It would be a crying shame if we had to end the adventure before it even started, but if they could not move the thing then that is exactly what we would have to do. I would then have come to realize that I had erred in granting them such praise via invitation. It is best to wait and see before making assumptions. They may just surprise me yet.❞

He started to follow Professor Valtome as soon as the professor started down the corridor. Kyden was very eager to see what obstacles the professor would throw there way. He was probably one of the few that thought the stranger poisoning stunt was actually a really good way to get them all to pay attention and learn. Of course that lesson had been what really pushed him to love potions and want to excel in the class.
When Professor Valtome said to move the huge mass of stone out of the way, Kyden knew immediately what needed to be done. The five of them needed to work together. They all needed to cast the Levitation Charm and move the mass of stone out of the way as one. What would be impossible for just one of them to do would be much easier for the group of them to do together.
"So we all need to cast the Levitation Charm together and at the same time to move the stone. I highly doubt anyone of us could do it alone. However the five of us working together would most likely be able to. The magical power of five is obviously much greater than the power of just one. Especially wizards that are still learning," He spoke up.
Kyden thought about the words Professor Valtome had spoke. Of course strength always came in numbers so why couldn't it be the same for magic. The more people casting a particular spell on a particular item the stronger and more forceful the spell would be. It made perfect sense really. One didn't even really need to ponder the thought that awfully much so long as they had common sense."Have any of you paused to consider the power that you possess apart?" "Now have you considered the power you possess together?" "By this, I mean your employment of teamwork. Imagine all that can be achieved when people pool their strengths toward one common goal?"

ACTIONS: Suggest they all work together to cast the Levitation Charm. If it is agreed to do so cast the Charm with fellow students.

Her spell worked on the wood, which had been lit up with fire from the fire spell that had been caught priorly, through the foolish work of the herbology professor, who had clearly underestimated the tomfoolery and idiocy of the new class of first years. It had taken a few tries to perfect the spell and her casting of it, as Eris copied the wand movements that Valtome had shown them, imitating the students that also attempted the spell with her. Once she was done with the first spell, Eris's feet glided over to Kaegen, and the piece of parchment in his hands.
It had taken a while to cast the spell correctly, but Eris refused to leave the log of charred wood until the spell had worked and set out the fire. She was not a quitter, not by any means. The determination that coursed through Eris's small body was strong enough that Eris's brow furrowed in concentration face red hot with sweat from the fire that she hadn't doused out yet and from the anger of her spell not working perfectly like the others undoubtedly would, as she worked rapidly, attempting to cast the spell with the wand movements that Professor Valtome had demonstrated. When the fire finally went out, Eris wiped sweat off her face with the long sleeve of her black robes, shame flooding her features, as she noticed just how long it had taken her to cast the stupid spell.
She would prove her worth, and she would not let anyone down. Stalking over to Kaegen and the parchment, another sigh broke free from Eris's lips, as she grasped the cherry wood of her wand tightly, eyeing the parchment and the students, one by one.
Already, the students were gathered around Kaegen, so Eris took the moment to introduce herself to new faces, and greet those she knew. Mainly the pair of ravenclaw prefects, who both blended into the darkness of the dungeons with their pale skin and ebony hair. The Slytherin boy had been a prefect around the same time Eris had, and the last boy was one of her own house. A pureblood she had heard of in passing, but had not made any attempt to contact or talk to.
This spell took less time to perfect, easily cast by the small girl. A small sigh of relief escaped Eris's lips, as her shoulder slummed in exhaustion, before she finally accomplished her goal of talking to the other students in the group.
Fancy vocabulary abandoned and discarded, just like the dictionary in the common room, Eris forced a sheepish smile onto her face. Her voice was a mere whisper, not wanting to upset the elfish professor, even if his hearing was so acute, that he could hear her.
"Hello, I'm Eris. I'd assume some of you know me already, but I figure it's nice to just say hello again, as we're to be working together." The girl spoke with a hint of aloofness, affects of hanging out with Dorian Gray and Max Avery slowly showing up and affecting Eris's demeanor. She was a pure blood, after all, and would have to learn how to act like one.
Eris never knew when to stop talking, and this situation was just one of the many examples of how Eris couldn't contain her chatterbox nature when it was least needed. Even if she was supposed to be cold and aloof, Eris was not..good at doing so. Nor was she good at conversation with strangers.
"Hopefully this isn't like the hufflepuff camp out. At least we're all coming prepared with a spell that douses fire, so that we don't get burnt horribly."
Before Eris could make another rubbish joke, Professor Valtome started his lecture, and Eris fell silent, snapping to rapt attention. The only sound the girl made was light footsteps, as Eris fell into line behind the menacing professor, as he lead them to their first obstacle.
The perils of teamwork. Working together would be important, and the students with her were smart enough to make a good team. They would need a leader too! Eris was a good leader, wasn't she?
Before Eris could elect herself as leader, the brown haired Slytherin stepped forward, and repeated what Valtome had said. They would need to work together to move the stone, obviously. Even Eris wasn't stupid enough to get the clear meaning behind Professor Valtome's lecture.
She would be a better leader, but grudgingly, Eris let Kyden (that was his name right?) take the lead.
"Fine, we can all cast the spell on the count of three." If they were wise, they would follow suit, and cast the spell with Kyden and Eris.
While waiting, Eris's eyes roamed the room in the dugeons, looking to see if there were anymore obstacles in the way, or if there were any creatures lurking in the darkness. If there was one thing she had learned from adventures in Hogwarts, it was that one always had to be prepared.
Once, she was done looking around, Eris returned her gaze to the group, and frowned slightly.
If they did not cast the spell, they would be foolish, and they would not be trying had enough, and did not deserve to join the adventure. "One, two, three.." Eris started to count, waiting for the rest of the group to join her in casting the spell.

Following professor Valtome deeper into the dungeons, Scott put his hands in his pockets to escape the chill air. The Gryffindor girl took this opportunity of silence to introduce herself as Eris, and though he said "Scott. Nice to meet you," she kept talking. Not in a rude way, he only wondered if she'd heard. Scott smiled to himself. All she said was true, and he was happy to find the others didn't seem to be there to somehow win, either. That would be a mistake on both his and their part, he knew, and it was made even more evident when the professor started giving them instructions.
The path before the students was blocked by a big boulder, the first obstacle.
It doesn't matter how fascinated by all things magic Scott is, his first instinct when faced with something like this will always be the primal question could I just move this? And though it was ridiculous, Scott appreciated the size of the boulder and compared it to his own. Scott was strong, yes, but forever grateful that the Slytherin boy spoke up before he started thinking aloud.
Excitement once again stirred inside him, it was beginning. One, two, three..
Scott realised what he was getting at, and as the professor kept speaking of the importance of teamwork, Scott took a look around at his fellow students. The chances of forgetting were small, he'd never been one to underestimate others, still he felt that he needed to properly remind himself that they'd been invited for the same reasons as he. They were all clever, and looked about as determined not to fail as Scott himself. He deeply appreciated the sight of them, before they stopped."Have any of you paused to consider the power that you possess apart? Now have you considered the power you possess together?"

Everything he said made sense. Scott knew little to nothing about the theoretical parts of channeling magic, but the basic idea of simply more equals more was no mystery to him. And even if it wouldn't be strong enough, he had a hard time believing the Levitation Charm would somehow weaken with the number of them casting together, and Eris, apparently, agreed."So we all need to cast the Levitation Charm together and at the same time to move the stone. Scott got his wand out quickly, agreeing to the plan with a nod and a childish smile before shooting encouraging looks over to the Ravenclaws. "Everybody in?""Fine, we can all cast the spell on the count of three."
