Errand NaNoMo The Gate
Chapter One
A seemingly frightful coincidence
November 3rd, 1984
Father says to not open the gate at night. The monsters will get in he said. I don't like the monsters, they scare me. Father says if we don't keep them out bad things will happen. What bad things? Are they like the monsters in the movies that eat your brains out? The ones that hide under your bed and wait for the perfect moment to strike? I have no idea what they'll do; and I don't know what they are either.
Elise set the diary down on her desk gently, unable to fathom what the meaning behind that journal entry was. The author seemed scared. Scared of what though? This house was creepy, sure; but monsters outside the old rusty gate? That thing looked as if it hadn't been opened and closed in years.

She wondered who wrote it; what terrified person who lived here in the year 1984. If they had referred to their dad as their father, they surely had to still be alive to this day, right? She began to think if she could find them- maybe through some old lease records or something.

Her thoughts were rudely interrupted by her own father's voice calling from downstairs, declaring he had arrived home from work. Elise had been home today, due to the fact that her unorganized father hadn't filed her school district papers yet. She figured she would get working on them today on her own, because god knows when her father would do it.

As she trotted down the stairs delicately, Elise called out a loud- "Intruder, intruder!" as she walked into the kitchen where her dad had been standing. He put his hands up in mock surrender and laughed lightly, gesturing toward the bundles of groceries that had been placed on the counter top. Elise groaned sarcastically and made her way to unload the food, placing them neatly in cabinets and fridges.

"Hey- dad? Do you know of any like.. people that owned this house before us?" She said curiously, hoping he had at least some backstory of the property. How weird would it be, that the house actually contained a murderer in the 1980's. Scary, but cool at the same time she supposed.

Her dad turned his head towards her, one eyebrow raised in confusion. His face read something along the lines of- 'What's gotten into you?" Elise smiled innocently at him, causing him to sigh and tell her there hasn't been anyone living in this house for a while. Not since the year- "1980 something. Lease owners said something about a family who disappeared. It's a load of bullshit if you ask me."

The words made Elise's blood run cold. The diary entry- It was 1984 when it was written. They said something about monsters? What the fuck was this house? Some deja-vu mansion? As Elise shook her head, she tried to convince herself it was a coincidence. A weird.. freaky coincidence.

As she nodded her head up and down quickly, she rushed out of the kitchen and climbed the stairs back to her room, practically out of breath as she reached the door. Elise slipped back into her chair at her desk and flipped open the diary. There were so many pages- practically the whole thing had been written in! Beginning to read the next entry, she gasped aloud as she read the first sentence.

I opened the gate. Me and Marlee thought it would be fun, just to peak inside. It was foggy in there, like how you look at a mountain that's far away in the morning. I haven't seen Marlee since. I called her name but she didn't answer me. I hope daddy doesn't find out.
The gate? There's no way there was a.. monster in there. That Marlee girl must have just been messing with her. Monsters don't exist, she knew that. This was all just a hoax- and there was nothing to be afraid of.

Elise then rushed to her window to get a look at the gate, just to make sure she wasn't going crazy. As she peered over her windowsill, she saw that the gate was open. Had her dad gone in there? No.. she hadn't heard the front door open. Then again, he may have slipped out the back. Though that didn't make much sense.

It must have always been open. Just a coincidence.
