Encounter in the shelves
Samuel was beginning to settle in at Hogwarts. Having been here only a few days he was by no means comfortable yet, but he was getting there. He had been in the study room earlier that day and thought he might have made a friend "Or is she an enemy? frenimy? I guess time will tell" He shrugged supposing it didn't really matter at this point.
Samuel was now in the library, wandering the shelves in search of tomes on transfiguration. He trailed the finger tips of one hand along the spines as he walked the other was in his pocket. The hand in his school robes pocket held the bag of tiny battered old tin soldiers his grandfather had given him. Fingers feeling the edges of feet, faces and arms through the cloth.
"From what I have gathered so far, animating them won't be easy or even likely to happen for years" The thought probably should have saddened him or more likely make him think of giving up, but Samuel saw it as a long term goal. Something to keep his ever wandering mind focused while he adjusted to school life with magic.
Stopping at an interesting title he pulled the book from the shelf and cradling it in his hand read the index. "hmm, I don't want to turn them into anything else like a mouse or bird so that's out" he turned the page again, "changing their color seems like a fairly beginner spell but of limited use elsewhere" Samuel had not learned any spells yet, not having started classes. He had also put most of his time into researching potions and as such was just now beginning to think about spells.
He turned the page again."engorgement charm?" he made a Hmm noise, as he read paying little attention to his surroundings as he perused the page. This engorgement spell did seem to have many uses, apart from making his soldiers grow it could make almost anything larger. interesting. "I wouldn't call it a beginner spell, but I think we have found a winner" this last sentence was spoken aloud as he closed the book and starting to walk without looking, nearly ran headlong into someone who had entered the row unnoticed.
"I'm sorry He said hastily "I wasn't paying attention to where I was going"

Hope you don't mind me popping in~
Aravis had been looking around at the shelves in boredom, having nothing better to do. "If I don't find anything interesting I may as well die of boredom!" She said quietly to herself. Aravis had no one expecting her seeing as she simply hadn't quite befriended anyone. She was certain she wasn't the only one here who was bored out of their minds. Normally she would have sat in the common room judging everyone from afar while reading a book of her mothers. However she had received a letter from her Father telling her that she needed to meet people or befriend at least one person in the week. She only had two days left before her time was up.
Frankly she didn't want to think about other people. They were troublesome most of the time. She began to look for more books on dragons. Even though she wasn't fond of reading they were interesting creatures. She entered one of the rows focusing alone on the book she was looking for. "I wouldn't call it a beginner spell, but I think we have found a winner." She heard a voice near her say. By the time she turned her head to see who was speaking the person had nearly ran her over. The boy apologized quickly but Aravis was unsure of it. "Well, if you don't pay attention to where you're going all the time you'll end up over the stair cases! Are you ok?" She asked carefully.

The awkward stumbling dance Samuel preformed as he backpedaled made his face turn red. He did however manage to avoid dropping his book, falling down, or connecting with the girl. "small favors I guess" He thought as he tried to control his blush.
Taking a breath he tried again,"Hi, my name is Samuel. I am new to magic and have yet to learn any spells, hence my distraction while I decided which one I should practice first. Have you learned any spells yet?".
"that was a little better I suppose" but then "oh you fool you never asked if she was ok and it was your fault to begin with" with a mental wince he added "are you ok? I didn't mean to run you down" thinking he had said quite enough already he lapsed into silence waiting on her response.
The rebuke was softened slightly by the inquiry after his health, and he decided he would focus on the question. "Yes, I am fine" he managed to get out after a pause "I'm really sorry, I was so caught up in my research that I wasn't paying attention and then when I started walking you were right there and then..." Samuel turned red again and trailed off after a moment when he realized he had been babbling."Well, if you don't pay attention to where you're going all the time you'll end up over the stair cases! Normally Aravis would have hexed anyone that ran her over into the next semester. However, today she was in seemingly pleasant mood. She laughed a bit as the boy tried to explain himself. He introduced himself as Samuel and that he was new to magic. "It's ok I'm fine. I'm Aravis, Aravis Escanora that is. Yes, I've already learned a few spells. My dad taught me how to do someone when I was young with a tree branch instead of a wand to prevent mishaps." She said with a smile and a slight chuckle. "If I might add, that was a lovely dance you did there trying to catch yourself."
She found the stumbling and babbling rather funny. No one in her family had ever really messed up walking or talking in the slightest. Well, that is other than her brother Maven. He was a walking disaster but no one needed to be aware of that. "Do you have a favorite spell so far? I'd have to say my favorite is Accio. Simple, easy, and gets what I need." Of course she wouldn't bring up that she had once used it to steal her Aunt's jewels and hide it from her just for laughs. No one was to ever know that mishap.

Samuel's face once again flamed at the reminder of his near collision and how he had caught himself. "Something tells me I am never going to live that one down" He thought sullenly to himself as he considered her other words. "It seems like some wizard parents taught their kids more then others" A few of his wizard born fellows didn't seem to know any more magic then he did.
"I, uh, haven't learned any spells yet" He admitted "But I am most interested in Transfiguration. I think I will start with the Engorgement Charm, then anything I transfigure I can make larger" He had not really intended to give a reason for why he wanted to learn the engorgement charm, but she seemed genuinely interested.
"I honestly think I am most interested in potions though. I think I will work on the cleaning charm too, to make that process go more smoothly" Samuel couldn't really see why a summoning charm would be someone's favorite spell, "but then again Samuel, you are the one who just said you want to learn how to CLEAN with magic. How strange is that" That thought nearly brought a smile to his lips.

Aravis gave a smile followed by a half laugh. "I like Transfiguration and Potions a ton. Probably my best subjects in all honesty. If you ever need any help I could give it a try!" After all they both did share the same common room so helping when ever would be pretty easy if it was needed. She wasn't so good with charms, but being the prideful being she was she would never admit to not being good at something. She had only gotten an A on her homework in that class, while the others so far were O's. Her Aunt would have her head if she found out Aravis had only made an A.
"In case you were wondering why Accio would be someones favorite spell, my family has a large house and it's a killer to walk around in it. The Accio spell just gets me stuff I need that I can't be bothered to go walk up and down five flights of stairs for." Aravis said with her cold blue eyes shinning in the light. She wasn't a lazy person by all means, it was just that house was so big and she...well she was an ant compared to it basically.

"Oh" Samuel said. He had been wondering even if he hadn't asked. "I didn't think we were even aloud to use magic outside of school, maybe its different for pure bloods" he would have to do a bit of research on this. "Thank you, I might have a few questions after my first lessons. I start classes really soon" It wasn't a bad idea really, there were in the same house after all.
"Oh hey what are you looking for in the library? I never asked what with the almost running you over and all" He barely blushed at the mention this time, his thoughts being elsewhere. It was kind of strange, that every other student he had had interactions with to date had been born of at least one wizard parent. "Seems somewhat odd, I had thought there was a bigger mix then this...focus Samuel" Samuels thoughts had wondered off again and he had to forcefully bring them back to the conversation at hand.
He looked to her, wondering what she might find interesting and worth researching. "the acco spell might have a few useful applications now that I consider it more carefully" Ok so his thoughts wondered again."If I get nothing else from meeting this girl, I will have gotten some new information on spells and their potential application. I will have to take some notes"

"In case you were wondering, no, I wasn't supposed to use magic out of school, but if you lived in that horror of a house you would. Do your best to not tell anyone or I swear I'll hex you." Her voice had quickly turn dark and slightly paranoid. "One another note. I was looking for a book on dragons. My mother and I rather find them interesting creatures." It was odd how quickly her mood could be swayed. Her voice had changed from happy to dark and back to happy. Her Aunt often called her bi-polar.
Of course she wouldn't say why she had practiced magic outside of school. No one was to know it was to defend herself from her Aunt and Uncle. No one was to know she had attempted a horrid spell on her Aunt, which fortunately for her didn't work due to her terrible pronunciation at the time or else it would be a terrible fate for her. However, secrets never stayed secrets. There were rumors she had attempted a certain famous spell. Despite them being true Aravis was a skilled at manipulation and could easily deny the accusations. She gave a smile and pulled out a book from the shelf beside her. "It seems I've found what I was looking for. I best be on my way. I take it I'll see you around quite often."
Aravis nodded her head in dismissal before walking a few steps towards the direction she had came from. She stopped quickly with a glimmer in her eye. "Also, if you hear any rumors about me,they are false. Spread by silly girl's with nothing better to do with their time." Aravis gave a quick turn on her heel and walked off as quitely as she entered. Samuel probably didn't know he had most likely met one of the people with one of the darkest futures or possibly even a bright future. After all that was to remain a mystery for their future school years.
