Reading This Time, Really
With a proper rinse, fresh robes and undergarments, and a renewed goal, Thomas entered the school library. Nostalgia accompanied his entrance into the room of discovery, imagination, and in his case, pain. Yes, his one and only visit into the library ended with books flying across the room, the crashing of bookshelves, and the ultimate intervention of the Solomon Lear. Like his previous visit, Thomas came with the intention to learn. Still so naïve, how often do things go according to plan?
As anyone following the story of Thomas Lestrange may guess, this book carnage came on the same day as his introduction to Erin Ryan. Another girl accompanied the two, initially innocent in nature, but shortly driven to attack after whispers from the purple snake. Another student whom many believed to be dead joined the scene to inspire hysteria amongst the students. Howard White. Aside from Ruby, he was the only potential ally Thomas had.
But things have changed since this day. Erin Ryan has changed. There was no semblance of the girl he met in this room. As this understanding developed, Thomas found himself torn on what he desired. His plan to form this false friendship with the goal of betraying the girl has gone by the wayside. Was the declaration of friendship he proposed enough to inspire such a drastic transformation? Not likely. Other elements assisted in the reconstruction of Erin. As he pondered her explanations, the notion of the crones playing a part in fixing her may have been closer to the truth than he preferred to believe. It led to this discomfort he attempted so desperately to shed, now developing into…concern? Don’t tell us he’s come to care for the girl. That’s not how this story goes.
Despite this ongoing internal battle of his feelings for Ryan, and his desire to find Howard, Thomas’ curiosity to discover the origin of his disappearance was to be prioritized. It would be harder than he would think, the room contained thousands and thousands of books, with no clear markings of sections. Were these books sorted alphabetically, or by subject? It was certainly not his forte, reading. With his natural athletic gifts, he saw no purpose to partake in enhancing his mind. Perhaps today was the day.
Several minutes passed of Thomas traveling up and down the aisles, searching for clues to determine how things were sorted. It didn’t take long to lose patience, as Thomas could not find anything on his desired subject. He came to stop in one of the aisles, beginning his search for other students that may be able to point him in the right direction. Most students appeared deep in thought, either reading or studying with quills in hand. Thomas considered his pursuit more urgent than whatever pointless grade they were working towards, boldly interrupting them with lines like “Where are the books on the lake?” or, “Creatures of the lake?” and even, “Etymology of the lake?” He recalled his earlier interaction with the boy he has decided to call Sir Romeo, aka Fox. During his petty speech of sorrow in the common room, he brought about some key information. Thomas had no knowledge of the merpeople, but if they resided in the lake, they could be a suspect. His mind lingered on the speech for a moment, trying to remember if there’s any other key information. Instead, it wandered elsewhere. Pathetic, he’s not even Parce. How does he justify playing with h---. Oh no. It’s happened again, the ever-growing concern of his care for Ryan. He would try his best to remove it from his mind, continuing to wander the library, engaging other students. “Books on the merpeople, know where they are?”

Opeila had made herself go to the library again. Enough of being broody and enough of hiding from half of the castle. This was ridiculous. Also she had to bring some books back. She didn't want to lose the privilege to take some with her.
Also she had some studying to do. Her last history essay had been terrible and she was desperate to catch up with the rest of the class. Actually, the only thing she could still remember from mentioned subject, was the gargoyle strike from... ok, no, she couldn't even remember that. So she had to go to the library. Opeila wouldn't have current events ruining her grades. No way.
So she was reading in a history book now, sitting in a comfortable armchair. Or at least she tried to, some idiot ran around and asked loud questions about the location of books about merpeople. Jesus, who did he think he was? She was surprised, that the librarian hadn't kicked him out yet. Just in that moment she saw the librarian, who killed the boy with looks. One more thing and he would be kicked out, the Slytherin felt that. "Hey!", she hissed, took a cushion of the armchair next to her and threw it at the boy. "You! The books are over there. And be a little quieter, alright?" She pointed at a bookshelf about six meters away. She had found it by coincidence earlier and wanted to remember it's position, so she could read about the giant squid sometime.

The bigheaded approach of the Slytherin boy did not last long without criticism. He did not care, choosing to prioritize his pursuit over maintaining the peace amongst these nerds. Thomas held apprehension in fear there was a general lack of acceptance from his counterparts. Whether it was his late father’s poor decisions that led to his demise, or his muggle mother, he has never felt accepted. Part of this was his own doing. This negative disposition drove him to avoid interactions when possible.
The following interaction was unavoidable. A girl younger than he sent a death glare as if to imply he was a bleeding idiot. Was she wrong? Likely not. Though as justified as her intervention may have been, this scolding led to instant distaste from the boy.
"Hey! You!"
Her voice came from a chair he had passed moments ago. Thomas turned back to face her, swiftly greeted with one of the furniture cushions. It squarely struck his chest, falling harmlessly to his feet. He glanced down to the cushion momentarily before meeting a pair of irritated eyes in his upward ascent. He narrowed his blue eyes to engage in a stare until she spoke again.
“The books are over there. And be a little quieter, alright?"
She pointed to a bookcase a row or so down. If she had only mentioned the location of the books and left it at that, Thomas likely would have left her be. But the audacity to demand he be quiet, oh no, that was going too far. “I’m not the one throwing things around the library.” His voice was only slightly above a whisper, a dead expression on his face as he turned away to approach the bookshelf. She was undeniably helpful, as the shelf contained several books on his desired subject. Thomas stacked four books and walked back near the girl. It did not take long for him to make up his mind, he was going to antagonize her.
Thomas found a seat near her at a table with books in hand. He set three to the side, opening the pages of his first book titled “Creatures of the Great Lake”. Offering a momentary glance, he spoke once more in a sarcastic tone “Thanks.” Somewhere deep down he truly appreciated her ending his search, but he would not make this notion visible on his appearance. Without removing his eyes from the page, he motioned towards the cushion she tossed earlier. “So, you going to pick that up then?” Sustaining his tone from earlier, he continued to flip through the pages, searching for anything about the Merpeople.

When the cushion hit the Slytherin boy, he turned around and stared at her until Opeila pointed at the bookshelf he had been asking for.
The boy didn't seem to be ok with her request a few seconds after. He just said that it wasn't him, who was throwing things through the library and then walked over to the bookshelf. Opeila, who had already continued to read, looked up again. "Yeah, well, throwing a cushion doesn't make a lot of noise though, does it?" Also, he could have thrown it back. Since she saved him from searching any longer for his merpeople books, this wasn't too much to ask, was it?
It surprised her a lot, when he came back short after, four books in his arms. He sat down near her. Opeila could already imagine, what was going to happen. She would be concentrating on a conversation and not study at all. How very inproductive.
He thanked her in a sarcastic tone and Opeila nodded. "No problem. Someone had to stop you from causing a certain librarian to explode." She flipped through the pages of her book until he spoke to her again. He asked, if she would pick the cushion up. "Oh actually I thought, since I helped you, you would throw it back.", the first year answered. She knew someone who'd immediately have thrown it bback to not owe her anything.

~ * ~Thomas had returned today. At first she had been shocked and happy, but as the interaction had gone on, she had felt guilty. Erin Ryan was the main person contributing to that. She was bold, she was impulsive, and she had admittedly put an impressive amount of effort into trying to find Thomas, at least from what she had said. Next to the purple-haired girl, Ruby looked… weak. Pathetic. The typically ambitious, strong-willed girl had instead seemed quiet and passive. Feeling so powerless was defeating. Maybe Erin was right about Ruby, and maybe Erin was a better friend to Thomas.
That didn't mean that Ruby couldn't also be his friend, couldn't try to work it out with him. She felt like she had let him down, and she wanted to make it up to him—to prove herself. When the meeting had wrapped up, she had returned to her reading, giving Thomas some space for a while. Now, she had headed to find him, going to search the library first.
She slowed her pace when she reached the library, ensuring that she would be quieter. Soft footfalls accompanied the quiet rustling of her robes moving as she made her way further in, looking for the boy. Her friend? She spotted him before long, talking with a younger girl. She was reading and seemed like she'd prefer to just be doing that, but overall she didn't seem too annoyed. Ruby decided to take her chances with both of them and she wandered over, taking a seat next to Thomas. “Had a chance to begin any research yet?” she asked him, and then politely nodded at the girl, acknowledging her too. “I hope I'm not interrupting anything.”~ * ~

"Yeah, well, throwing a cushion doesn't make a lot of noise though, does it?"
The young brunette harshly whispered, prompting Thomas to roll his eyes in an unjust manor. “It’s still disruptive, no?” He offered an icy glance at the girl before beginning to turn the pages. Whether it was the obliviously loud nature Thomas carried himself, or the tossing of furniture, the argument was a moot point. If they carried this argument any further, they would both be removed from the library. Thomas had been removed from the library once before against his will. In his defense, he was unconscious and unable to do so under his own power. Seeing as he was fully conscious this time, he intends to make the effort to avoid it happening again.
The girl went on to suggest Thomas should pick it up, and that he was in her debt for ending his book search. He ignored her comment for the moment, beginning to flip through the pages. Considering she knew the location of books associated with the Great Lake, perhaps it was a subject she has studied in the past. Thomas wondered if she could continue to be useful in his pursuit of truth. “What do you know about the Merpeople?” Thomas asked blankly, a sign that he has moved past any ill feelings for his new acquaintance. After going through several chapters, he found what he was looking for. He read the descriptions of the half-human, half-fish hybrids with silver tails. But there was no recollection of a creature with any resemblance in his memory. Frankly, he could not remember any details of what happened when he was in the lake. He couldn’t even verify that’s where he was all that time.
There were several images that accompanied the text in this chapter, Thomas leaned in, intently scanning the drawings for a connection. His research was interrupted when a familiar voice came from the rear. Ruby Cazares was approaching.
“Had a chance to begin any research yet?”
Thomas turned to see Ruby taking a seat beside him. He hasn’t given the previous interaction in the common room much thought, but her defense was startling to the boy. She was exceptionally passive in her opposition against Erin Ryan. Has she changed as much as Erin? Or perhaps Ruby was wise enough to avoid feeding into Ryan’s antics. With a prefect badge to boot, perhaps it was just Ruby was not the same girl he met the night of a dangerous storm. It would not stop Thomas from welcoming her, he won’t dismiss the girl so easily. Now was as good a time as any to end any suspicion.
“I hope I'm not interrupting anything.”
Ruby was polite to acknowledge the other girl, and Thomas swiftly answered for the pair. “Not at all, you’re most welcome.” He offered a halfhearted smile, a noticeably uneasy expression forming that may hint at the lingering confusion from their past interaction. “Just don’t be loud, she’ll throw things at you.” He teased the girl with a muted chuckle, motioning to the sofa cushion that remained on the floor. “She did help me find the right books. I haven’t made any connections yet.” Thomas responded to Ruby’s initial question, modestly expressing some gratitude for the other girl’s role in helping him.
Several questions formed over the events in the common room earlier that day. Thomas was noticeably anxious to engage Ruby on the subject, but with the other girl around he opted to beat around the bush for the time being. He has always been apprehensive to trust others. Thomas eyed the prefect badge on Ruby’s robes. “I see some things have changed since I’ve been gone.”

Opeila chuckled a little when the other Slytherin said, that it was disruptive to throw a cushion. "Not as disruptive as actively disrupting people with their studys, don't you think?", the first year replied to that.
The boy, who's name she still didn't know, just ignored her comment about her thinking that he would pick the cushion up, causing Opeila to raise her brows in surprise. That was not very nice.
Instead he asked her what she knew about merpeople. Innerly the girl was a little indignant now. What an arrogant way to treat people! She decided to just ignore him as well.
Opeila looked up again, when a girl, another Slytherin approached. She asked the boy, if he had the chance to begin any research. Opeila recognized her as one of the prefects, but she couldn't remember her name. When she said that she hoped, she wasn't interupting anything, Opeila opened her mouth to answer, but the boy was faster.
Opeila nodded when he said that she was welcome and smiled at the girl. The smile disappeared when the boy said, that Opeila would throw things at her if she was loud. A second after, another cushion would fly towards his head. "That is just rude, you were disrupting others and I helped you finding your books!", she said, not angry or annoyed, just with playful indignance in her tone- maybe a little too loud. A girl from a table nearby hissed at her, but Opeila just ignored it.

~ * ~It was true that Ruby did not particularly want to risk a fight with Erin Ryan. While she didn't truly understand the danger of the older girl, she knew enough about her strength from seeing her play in Quidditch. Verbal fights were fine, but impulsive people could cause that to quickly escalate into a physical fight. Sure, being a prefect gave Ruby some power, but what could she really do? Giving the purple-haired girl detention would hardly act as much of a deterrent, and Ruby didn't want to spend any more time with her anyway. Since she had wanted to stay to hear what Thomas had to stay, she had to be quieter than usual. If being passive meant that she could avoid the brunt of Erin's wrath, then she was definitely going to be passive.
She noticed the look in Thomas's eyes and wondered if it was worth it anyway. Right now, Erin seemed like the better protector—better friend. When Ruby saw the unease in her friend(?)'s expression, she understood why it occurred. However, that didn't make it any more bearable. Friendship required trust; it required friendliness and some sort of positive feeling behind it. It was quite possible that she had lost her friend, but maybe it was just confusion that was driving them apart. How could you talk to someone who had been missing for nearly a year and seemed to be held captive by mermaids? How could you talk to someone who seemed to be better friends with a terrifyingly beautiful, aggressive third year? A lot of the specifics of their relationship and where they stood now hadn't been addressed. They needed to talk, before it got any worse.
“Just don’t be loud, she’ll throw things at you.”
"That is just rude, you were disrupting others and I helped you find your books!"
Ruby chuckled as the other two continued to squabble. It was relaxing, in a way, to know that—regardless of what was happening with Thomas and what messed up things were occurring in this school—there was still some semblance of normality. They would continue to be kids and quarrel over things like a cushion being thrown and disturbances during studying. Even this was hard to focus on, though. The only thing she could think about right now was Thomas's departure and sudden return. After a while, Ruby had assumed that his parents had just pulled him out of school or something after the disturbing events at a few of the recent balls. That would make sense, no? She had thought that he would write when he was ready. Yet he had never sent any letter, and he had showed up today soaking wet, smelling like fish, and talking in someone else's voice about getting back into the water. Apparently, no one had known what had happened to him.
She wanted to see if he was truly feeling okay and if he remembered anything at all. The memory was another problem—he would have remembered if he had just been at home the entire time. How much could she mention in front of the girl? Could they trust her? Did they even want her to be around while they discussed these matters? If this had been about anything else, she would have just come back later, but she had a limited amount of time before Erin returned and likely wouldn't leave Thomas. So as not to ignore the other girl and because she had been taught to introduce herself properly, Ruby said, “I'm Ruby Cazares, it's nice to meet you.” It hardly took a second for her attention to switch to Thomas and his prompt.
“Things have changed indeed. I may be a prefect now, but that doesn't mean I can't have fun. I'm still Ruby, still the same at heart, even if some… recent developments have hindered me,” she responded, blue eyes willing him to listen, to understand that she was still his friend, even if she wasn't quite the same girl from that stormy day.~ * ~

"Not as disruptive as actively disrupting people with their studys, don't you think?",
The younger brunette refused to let up that Thomas was at fault. His indifference to the suggestion he should pick up the cushion only prompted similar treatment when he requested her understanding of the Merpeople. She appeared to contemptuously brush off the question, eyes remaining on the book that lay before her. What more could you expect from a fellow snake? Thomas was one of the rare students that did not place great significance on the houses at Hogwarts. He believed the sorting hat misplaced him. Though as time passed, he began to see the resemblance to his fellow Slytherins.
After Ruby joined the pair, it did not take long before another cushion collided with the boy’s face. It led to a surprising jolt back, as he had not detected the cushion in time to properly react. It dropped below him on top of his book. His brief embarrassment was quickly overshadowed by anger. Without moving his head, his blue eyes traveled to the corners, offering another cold stare. Ruby’s presence inspired hesitation to act, as the looming conversation they needed to have continued pressing.
"That is just rude, you were disrupting others and I helped you finding your books!"
Thomas dug his fingers into the cushion, squeezing it as if it was a stress ball. He felt his acknowledgement of her help was enough to balance out the tongue in cheek comment about her inclination to throw things. He was wrong, the younger brunette shared no amusement in his words. A hiss came from a girl at a nearby table. Thomas took a deep breath through his nose before speaking again. “Now who is disrupting others?” He whispered, gently tossing the pillow cushion back to the girl for her to catch. “I don’t have time for a pillow fight right now, thank you. Besides, you would most definitely lose.” Thomas couldn’t help himself from risking another negative reaction from the girl. After all she had hit him twice with a pillow without any physical response.
“I'm Ruby Cazares, it's nice to meet you.”
Ruby’s introduction inspired civility amongst the students, as Thomas came to realize he has not told the younger Slytherin his name. Did he even want to? “I’m Thomas.” Thomas spoke with a reluctance in his tone. He avoided telling others his last name, as it was shared by a notoriously famous dark wizard. He was not related to her in any way, but his now deceased father shared the dark ideology. He would always to attempt to avoid it altogether, hoping one day he could change it to his mother’s maiden name.
“Things have changed indeed. I may be a prefect now, but that doesn't mean I can't have fun. I'm still Ruby, still the same at heart, even if some… recent developments have hindered me,”
Her role as a prefect was fitting, Ruby contained several great qualities. Whether it was her willingness to help others, the ability to set aside pride to work with others as part of a team, or just the graceful nature she carried herself. There was surely lingering disappointment from her stance in the common room earlier that day, but Thomas could not linger on it as he knew the aforementioned qualities remained. “Recent developments?” Thomas pushed for her to share the details.
Reading This Time, Really
The boy, who's name Opeila still didn't know, tossed the cushion to Opeila, who caught it and placed it on the chair next to her. He said he didn't have time for a pillow fight. She was about to continue reading, when he added that she'd probably lose anyway. Opeila could only just stop herself from throwing another cushion at the boy.
The girl introduced herself as Ruby Cazares. "Nice to meet you too, Ruby Cazares. I'm Opeila Seilun." She didn't know if Ruby prefered first or last names, so she would just wait for her housemate to decide.
Now also the boy decided to tell her his name. Thomas. Opeila did notice, that he didn't tell her his last name.
The prefect then turned to the boy who Opeila now knew as Thoman and started sonething that sounded like a careful explanation of herself. Suddenly the first year wasn't sure if she was still welcome here- on the other hand, it had been Thomas who came to her in the first place, right? No, if they didn't want her to hear it, they had to leave. And if they didn't mind... well.
He then answered to Ruby's words, something Opeila didn't want to listen to. This was none of her business.
