It was just after morning curfew, and the chill of dawn still lingered in the damp air of the library. An occasional gust of wind rattled the musty bookshelves, sending a thick, lacy veil of dust swirling through the window into the courtyard, where it mingled with the iced ribbons of breath blown by a Quidditch player hurrying to his morning practice.

Jo sat at a table towards the back, perusing an encyclopedia on hags.

The letters sat neatly before her on the table, along with an illustrated copy of Romeo and Juliet. She wasn’t sure, really, if either of the professors would come. In retrospect, the owl she had sent was far too vague, even threateningly so. What in the world had she meant to convey through “examine evidence in light of recent events?” It would be terribly conceited of her to even think for a moment that the Head of Slytherin herself would bother with the conspiracy theorist ramblings of a few overly zealous children.

Still she sat, ever hopeful that a head of grey hair would pop out from behind a cabinet or jog in through the door.

She certainly hoped, for the sake of all involved, that Rafa was in a better mood than their last library meeting. They were on the brink of a big discovery - petty relationship squabbles would just have to wait until the murder was solved. Then again, mentioning such a scandalous thing to the Gryffindor would likely earn her a good punch, and she wasn’t about to sport matching bruises with Jack Burnett.

[font=Segoe Print]Jo's luck, as it seemed, was working in her favor – Rafael was in a much more cordial mood today. It was a bit hard to explain why, exactly, as the reasons were always rather menial. Perhaps it was the way the sun shined through the windows of the boys’ dormitory, or perhaps it was the smell of fresh air wafting in from the courtyard. Rafael's mood swings, in his own opinion, could be more confusing than magic, at times. It hadn't been too long ago that he'd been seething mad, the epitome of all anger. Before that, tired beyond belief. And yet before that, dull and bored. Sometimes he humored himself, wondering if it were the castle who did such things to him, or his own human hormones. Both would be in the realm of possibility, he supposed. Or, perhaps he was just a strange young man like that, his mind running on a completely separate page than the rest of his being. He supposed he wouldn't worry about that too much, though, as there were more important things to focus his thoughts on as of now.

The library seemed quieter now than it had before, the seats barer then usual – not a foreign sight this early in the morning, as most students were still in bed, or mingling around the Great Hall. Which was probably for the best. When Jo had first alerted him to this meeting, he had been a bit reluctant towards people seeing him. And, for a few reasons. For one, their conversions with the teachers needn’t be public. It seemed as if the castle itself were plotting against the lot of them, trying its hardest to doom Potter to a life in Azkaban. With all the cloak and dagger between everyone [certain students included], there was no one to be trusted. Not even Lear.

Though, perhaps he could find honesty in a few of his friends. Or, complicated relationships, if you will. Which was what brought him to his next reservation – it was as if these past few weeks, he and Jo had grown a bit of a reputation for working together. Which was fine, he supposed, if everything was strictly business. The thing was, the more people he ran into, the more he heard different stories. Rumors. It was a bit selfish, but part of him wanted to keep his distance from her for this reason. Surely he knew the truth of the matter, but not everyone did – he would definitely need to keep an ear out for these things, as rumors were of the list of things he absolutely despised.

Of course, it was better not to think of such things at a time like this, as there were much more important things on the line. The Gryffindor boy wasted no time in slipping into the seat next to Jo, making himself a bit more comfortable in his robes. “Jo,” he said. “Looking ghastly, as per usual.” He slipped her a bit of a grin, digging into his pockets quickly. “S’pose we don’t have to worry about ogres, now that we have its kind present.” He set the stack of letters down on the table, leaning back again and threading a hand through his hair. Perhaps a part of him was anxious, though he would do well not to show it. These letters, as it seemed, were more important than they led on. “Seen a professor yet?” he added, his voice taking a more serious tone. “Old people, lurking behind the bookshelves?"

Stress was a word that Hjørdis gotten far too used feeling these days. With the ridiculous number of patrols she had been doing, sleep became rarer. There was far too much work to do and running a school on top of it all was exhausting. But she did not have the pleasure of laying in bed till the afternoon. The Head of House had already patrolled the castle, throughout the night, before making her way to the library once she had clocked off. It was still early, far too early for most people to be in the library. In fact, the place was pretty dead. It worked out perfectly for her, as her intention was just to come in, grab some books and leave. There was far too much work on her hands at the moment for idle chitchats.

You could never tell from looking at her, though. Her appearance was in the pristine condition that she was always proud of. Her hair was neatly pulled off her made up face, into a bun. She wore a pair of jeans, a loose sweater and a pair of black boots, with her arms and neck adorned with jewellery. Nothing would look out of the ordinary. She made sure she put in the effort to show nothing was out of the ordinary. There was a reason for it. Well, there was a reason for most things Hjørdis bothered to do, especially these days. She did not bother with things that were not important in some shape or form.

She scanned the bookshelf in front of her, her fingers running across the edges of the spines as her eyes caught the names of them. She was looking for a few particular books. Spotting one, Hjørdis grabbed it off the shelf and nestled it under her arm, where she already had another one tucked under. The other book was from the same area, both on a similar topic. On her list, there was a couple more books that she required. Hjørdis marched quickly out of the section she was in to head to another area, where she knew one of the other books would be.

As she turned to enter into the shelves, she caught a glimpse of a few figures not too far away. Students, from the looks of it. It was past the morning curfew, so she had no reason to scold them. Perhaps they were Ravenclaws. Who else would be in the library so early? Well, at least they were likely here to study. Anyone who studied was already doing well in her eyes. Their education was important. All of the trouble the professors were going through, that the school was going through, was for the students. For their education, for their future, for the hope of a better tomorrow. Now she had to help ensure their safety, to help protect that future.

Ignoring them, she went into the shelves and quickly searched for the next book she required. It did not take her for more than a few moments to find it.  With three books in hand, she walked out to head to the last section. There was one book left, that she wanted to acquire before checking out. It was a speedy visit but time was something she lacked these days. If she got these books back, she might be able to catch a twenty minute nap before she had to actually start reading them. She was going to need a lot of tea to get through today, it seemed.

A familiar face slid into the adjacent seat - since he hadn't chose the opposite one, it seemed the boy was more hopeful than she was that both professors would eventually arrive. Or at least less anxious, considering his smirk. If he was nervous, he hid it marvelously well.
“Jo. Looking ghastly, as per usual. S’pose we don’t have to worry about ogres, now that we have its kind present."
Ouch. Rafa was definitely getting better and better at this. Jo liked to think that it was all thanks to her, but who knew?

"I'm dressed quite nicely, but don't worry. I understand fashion can be a little difficult for trolls to comprehend."

She was indeed dressed nicely - by her standards, that is. And boy were those standards low. It seemed being an actual witch just wasn't witchy enough for the girl, who was sporting under her usual Gryffindor robes a baggy black dress with a round white collar and a black ribbon that looked like something Esther from The Orphan would wear. This was her idea of "business casual" at the moment, of course having never conducted any sort of "business" before. At the moment, that meant muggle "church clothes".
"Seen a professor yet? Old people, lurking behind the bookshelves?"
She had to smile at that - it sounded as if the professors were only little house-elves, bustling about the castle for their students.

"I wish. Maybe I ought to have signed the owls. I just wrote 'a concerned student' at the bottom, but that sounds so dumb now that I think about it. Ugh! Maybe we're being too paranoid."

They probably weren't. The school was actually rather lively considering the murder that had occurred on its grounds. Cancelling the Blossom Ball was huge, sure, but would it be enough to stop whatever was after... whatever it was after? What was the Hogwarts Killer after? Headmaster Lear? Maybe it was Headmaster Lear. Maybe the Hogwarts killer had already gotten Headmaster Lear. Would the death of a headmaster be enough to shut down a school? Eh, probably not. Still, they had to be careful. Hogwarts had a reputation for disregarding its students' safety. That was just the way Jo liked it, but it was getting a bit too dangerous to wander the corridors after curfew. Or make a forbidden little splash in the lake - her biggest guilty pleasure.

Suddenly, something darted out of a bookshelf. Grey hair, an unmistakeable air of authority...A professor! And not just any professor, but the very professor they had been awaiting!

Professor Jensen!" Jo jumped out of her seat and scrambled over to the woman, abruptly discarding the present conversation. "I'm so glad you got the owl."

Whether or not Professor Jensen had actually read the letter or not was, to her at least, completely irrelevant. She was here, and that was all that mattered. Besides, there was no other reason for a person to be at the library so early. It couldn't be a coincidence.

"Professor Price should be here any minute. Please sit down!" Jo beamed at the Head of House as she bounded back to the table. "There are so many things we need to ask you!"

[font=Segoe Print]“I’m dressed quite nicely, but don’t worry. I understand fashion can be a little difficult for trolls to comprehend.”

A grin snaked its way onto the boy’s features, a mischievous glint in his eye as he leaned forward, the humor of her words rolling off of him in waves. Jo certainly was a fickle creature, that much was evident. However, rather than such a trait being a nuisance, the boy found her snarky comebacks rather amusing, certainly welcome in loosening the thick air that may or may not have been present at the time of his arrival. However, if she thought she was to get off easy, then she would have to think again. His lips slightly parted, leaning forward just slightly – “I can tell,” he drawled playfully. “You seem to be struggling. Need some help? A catalogue? A bloody mirror?”

Though, any amusement he once held on his features was quickly ushered from his features, a cautious gaze taking over his eyes as his smile turned into a tentative frown. “I doubt it, Jo. There are strange things happening about these walls… I don’t trust these teachers. Hell, I don’t trust anyone but you, Evelynn, Pierre, and Pericles.” He rubbed his eyes, looking around the bare library, before continuing. “However, there’s only one way to find answers. Waiting for them to come isn’t going to cut it – we need to seek them out.” Which, might have meant endangering their collective health and safeties, but since when had such matters meant much to such a rowdy child?

At the sound of his frenemy’s cries, Rafael quickly looked up, shaking himself from his thoughts as his eyes darted about, looking for the whereabouts of whom Jo was calling for. Could it be – yes, a Professor! The Slytherin head of House, to be specific – Hjordis ‘Nora’ Jensen, one of the professors the duo had been searching for to begin with. Perfect! He shortly evacuated his seat, eager feet carrying behind the wake of his raving Gryffindor partner, his curiosity utterly piqued as he carried himself to the lovely silver-headed teacher. What was the significance of Nora, in this case? Why did Lear want her to see the letters, instead of an alternative professor?

Jo had begun rambling, of no surprise to the boy, the very sight putting a small smile upon his lips. However, he knew there were better ways to get a teachers’ attention. The boy put a closed fist to his mouth, coughing for attention, an acute ‘ahem’ filling the open air. “I think what Jo means, Professor,” he added, “is that, we’ve got something important to show you. Something involving a certain murder within these walls?” He raised his eyebrow, his eyes surveying the area around them, before landing on the fair woman in front of him. “Would you mind, taking a look? Unless you’ve got something more important to address, of course.”

Hjørdis blinked as she heard her name being called out in the dead quiet library. Judging by the voice, the girl she had spotted earlier was talking about an owl. She blinked some more, frantically trying to recall what owl the girl was speaking of. She could not, there had been so much that had happened recently. Her mind had been very preoccupied with the incidents surrounding the Slytherin attack and the Professor meeting that seemed to only contain worse news. This matter went above just her house. Hogwarts itself was not safe and she needed to prepare. The books she had in her arms were a clear indication of that, as she gathered information on curses, hags, and healing potions to see if there was any new discoveries or information that could be of use.

But the girl spoke with a sense of urgency. One that Hjørdis could not ignore. Even mentioning Price, which sparked her curiosity a little further. She turned around, facing the girl and spotting the boy behind her, "Miss...?" She paused, waiting for a name as she could not quite recognise the student. Jo. That was the name the boy gave. Her eyebrow quirked a little as the boy spoke about a certain murder within these walls. What... did they know?

She could help the feeling of dread that was bubbling inside, worried they would share something that would make the whole situation a lot worse. She really did not want them to turn around and mention that there were also trolls attacking their students or centaurs on a rampage. Things were bad enough as it was. However, she took their words seriously. Any information they provided - whether she wanted to hear it or not - would be useful in helping to solve the whole situation.

Hjørdis nodded, making her way over to the table. She placed the books down on the side before glancing at them, "Very well, what do you have, Mister...?" She asked, going straight to the point, whilst also asking for a name. Unfortunately, time was limited. It was essentially to use it wisely and effectively in the situation.

After all, he was right in that she had important matters to attend to. Trying to figure out how to reverse the curse put on her Slytherins was just one of them. But it was an important step. Not only for them but also because she was terrified that more students would get attacked and cursed again. They needed to figure out a cure for it and quickly, on the off chance that the whole school got it. Hjørdis was also trying to figure out how they got cursed, where the attacks stemmed from, where the hags were, how to protect all of the students, where the next attack was, if Finlay was actually evil, if Plott had anything to do with it, if the third year students Opeila mentioned were behind it... Ah, the list continued... There was not enough time in the day to find the answers to all of these questions whilst helping to keep the school running...

But information was power. And right now, the other side had much more information than they did. To level the battlefield, they needed to prepare and they needed to formulate a plan. On the off chance that these students could provide an insight into the situation, Hjørdis was willing to listen.

And above that, though she would never admit it, the students needed comforting. Though warmth, hugs and comfort were not exactly her style, she would still attempt to make them feel slightly safer. A professor's presence did wonders, especially if they were willing to talk or listen.

“I think what Jo means, Professor, is that, we’ve got something important to show you. Something involving a certain murder within these walls? Would you mind, taking a look? Unless you’ve got something more important to address, of course.”
Jo grimaced as the boy one-upped her perfectly. It was absolutely necessary that he should do so, of course. One to snatch the professor's attention, another to explain the cause. Despite her subsequent eyeroll, Jo couldn't help but marvel at the unexpectedly smooth teamwork as she pulled a chair and took her seat.

A question jumped into her mind as she glanced at her fellow student. Just how much could they trust this professor? How much were they willing to reveal? Jo knew she had messed up with the witness back at the Valentine Tea Party, and she wasn't about to jeopardize the others' trust in her like that again. Oversharing was dangerous, and even though she knew that the Gryffindor-Slytherin enmity was juvenile and outdated, there was still a part of her that wondered if the Head of House viewed them as brash and blabbering idiot children unworthy of being granted information suited only for the intelligent and secretive students of her own house. Were house points still relevant when it came to meddling in dangerous adult affairs? The girl had to admit that she didn't know.

"Well, um..." Once more tossing another pleading look at the boy, she tried her best to inconspicuously slide Romeo and Juliet onto the floor and pointed to the letters.

"The last one is a letter that got dropped by owl while Rafa and I were in the Headmaster's Office. The capitalized letters read, 'Take to Nora.' We think that Headmaster Lear might have written this letter for you to see, and we were wondering if you knew anything about, um, everything that's been happening lately. Is there a code or something in the letter that you recognize, Professor? I think there might be something in here that only you would know about."

[font=Segoe Print]"Very well, what do you have, Mister...?"

A smile shortly appeared on the face of the Gryffindor boy, albeit small, an almost unnoticeable display of victory. Alas, it seemed as if the two had successfully garnered the attention of the lovely Professor – perfect. What answers were they to uncover? What knowledge did the woman possess, regarding the letters of Lear’s office? He had so many questions, an endless well of possibility, resting on his lips, the very tip of his tongue – running a hand through his hair in thought, he opened his mouth, ready to respond to her inquiry, when out of the blue…

Jo stole his thunder.

The words instantly died on his tongue, his eyes quickly flickering over to the girl in question, gaze a bit more pointed than usual. Well, that was just lovely, wasn’t it? Oh, how the young Thunderbird wished it were him to bring the mysterious information to the Slytherin head of House. Call it jealousy, call it selfishness – discovering the answers to this mystery meant more to him than anything else in the world, among Quidditch, hot girls, and countless other things that seemed to distract him during his many hours amongst the school of magic. Was she cutting him out of this? Was he overanalyzing? No matter, such thoughts held no worth in the long run. Rather than voice his displeasure towards his fellow Gryffindor, he opted to keep his mouth shut, instead listening to his friend’s response, albeit a bit jealously, a small pout forming on his lips and his arms crossed.

The moment Jo had finished, he’d promptly added onto the information she had so graciously snatched from his proverbial fingertips. “We think that it has to do with some sort of code,” he explained, leaning forward on the table with both hands as he jutted his chin to one of the letters. “Here, observe the date on this one – “ he removed one of his hands, his finger landing on the date. “You see? It’s dated four years from now. Strange, right? Now,” he relocated his finger, now towards one of the many foreign letters dotting the page, “observe the special characters. Specifically, the Latin. They spell something, yeah? ‘She was murdered by Finnley’. But, beyond that – why Latin?” He chewed his lip, searching for the right words. “Forgive me, I can’t help but scrutinize – what’s the significance?”

“Now, look here,” he continued, his hand now moving to another letter. “This message, read backwards, spells out ‘Evil Blood War – ’” he winced, gaze flickering over the last word. “’Hag.’” The word was certainly curious, the strings of imagination tugging the back of his mind as he considered its meaning. “I mean,” he wondered aloud, “why hag? Of all names… I mean, if I were angry, I know a lot stronger names I’d use. Hags…” his lip caught between his teeth, a memory surfaced in that moment – specifically, a snippet regarding something Elliot had said in the Headmaster’s office. “Aren’t hags magical creatures of some sort?”

Turning to Nora once more, he crossed his arms, raising his eyebrow in a mix of determination and concern. Now that he was analyzing the facts once again, his curiosity was spinning a web of possibility, its icy tendrils creeping into the depths of his dark imagination and pulling out obscenities of the worst sort. “What do you make of this Professor? What’s going on?” he asked, his eyes glaring at the letters, sprawled in front of his eyes. “What does all of this mean…”

He’d absently noticed Jo gesturing towards something out of the corner of his eye – the Romeo and Juliet book? What was she getting at? He quickly raised his eyebrow, sending her a look, as if to say ‘I don’t know’, complete with a shrug and an upturned palm. No matter, there would be time to figure such things out later. Right now, the only thing that mattered, was what Nora had to say.

Her eyes fell onto the letters that were being pointed at. She quirked an eyebrow. She had seen them before. Hjørdis lifted each one, examining it closely to see if it was indeed the same. The professor had taken copies of the originals and read them so many times that she knew them well enough to know they were the same. But that did not actually mean she understood them.
An owl dropped it in the Headmaster’s Office?” She asked, a little surprised. That, at the very least, was new information. She had not found out where they came from in the mess of everything that happened during the professor meeting but knew they were said to be from Lear.

Said being the key word there. There was no way to verify this. The Head of Slytherin sighed softly, perching herself onto the side of the chair that she probably ought to have just sat on but did not. She did not bother to explain that she had already seen the letters, though was still trying to put together the pieces herself. Price had shown her - and the rest of the professors - during the recent meeting.

Neither of the students offered up a name, she had no idea what to refer to them as. Perhaps they were too caught up in rushing out all the information that they forgot. Or they chose not to tell, which would be rather telling of their character and whether or not she ought to trust them with any information in return. Though the girl mentioned the boy as "Rafa", which was all she had on their names for now. There were far too many students to be able to name them all, especially for the first years.

Dropping the letters back to where they were once she had read them, Hjørdis sighed softly, as she listened to the boy explain things. He noticed the points she did - though, perhaps not all of them. But despite this, there were still things that they were not sure of. Even collectively, they did not know - that much was apparent by their questions and her lack of information. "A date in the future, perhaps... Perhaps reversed... 24th of the 4th, 2004..." She replied, absentmindedly towards the boy. She was not actually sure if something happened in 2004. That was a long time ago. But it was a possibility, given that the future date seemed bizarre. "Or maybe it's not even a date..." She said softly. A code, perhaps, a number for something. 4 + 4 + 24... 32? 4 + 4 + 2 + 4... 14? A pin code? 4424. It was weird but it could also be anything.

Rafa mentioned the coded words. Murdered by Finlay. Hjørdis instantly thought about the rather attractive school nurse. He was the only Finlay she could think of - she had told the other professors that. Of course, she had no reason to actually doubt him, other than a random letter with a matching first name. It could be complete coincidence or a way to frame an innocent man, of course. However, that did not mean they could freely trust the nurse. He was in a position where he was trusted by default. When you held people's lives and safety on your hands, you were trusted. This could easily be abused. He had access to the most vulnerable students - the sick and wounded. It bothered her. It was also frustrating to have to doubt the cute guy. Surely the cute guy could not be a murderer, surely? Well, a girl could dream. Sigh. Never trust a cute face. It could only go wrong.

The Latin... She had no idea. She could not think of a connection between Latin and Lear, and the whole situation. Perhaps the only way to get his message hidden subtly? Perhaps something with more meaning... "More than that... isn't it weird to write a romantic love letter whilst signing of so formally?" She asked the boy as she pointed towards the 'Headmaster' Lear. Why would Lear not sign off as Solomon if this was intended to be a love letter?

She sighed softly. The boy continued to ask about the letters, reaching to the next one. He mentioned the evil blood war that they were all dreading would become a reality - and the three letter word that she was not allowed to talk about. As much as she wanted to tell him, she could not. Hags... The real danger that existed. Nonetheless, Hjørdis told him what she could, "Yes. Hags are vicious beings. If you think of a muggle's definition of a witch - an ugly old thing with warts - that is pretty much what a hag is." Hjørdis knew very well that she could not tell them that the threat of hags still being on the grounds existed - or that professors had been hurt by them. That was something she hated.

“An owl dropped it in the Headmaster’s Office?”
Jo nodded, still unsure of how much of their encounter she could relate without incurring a detention. She decided to stay silent for a while, quietly listening to Rafa's responses.
”Yes. Hags are vicious beings. If you think of a muggle's definition of a witch - an ugly old thing with warts - that is pretty much what a hag is.”
Having just learned the material in Defense Against the Dark arts, the young witch found herself incapable of resisting the opportunity to one-up her Gryffindor frenemy with her knowledge.

"They like to eat kids," she said with a mixture of morbid excitement and smugness. "They can even use a little bit of Rudimentary magic. Er, about that..."

Here she pulled out a book she had been borrowing from the library for a while. (Link to her getting it) It was a rather thin volume, bound with a silky fabric cover.

"'Sleeping Beauty', 'Briar Rose', 'Sun, Moon, and Talia' - it's a fairy tale with a lot of names and a lot of variations, but the witch in the story is actually the Hag Leticia Somnolens. Even though this part's been cut out of newer versions of the story, in the older editions like Sun, Moon, and Talia, the witch actually tries to eat Sleeping Beauty's children. In the magical version of the story, when she curses Sleeping Beauty to sleep for a thousand years she paints the spindle with the Draught of Living Death. A similar Hag can be found in the fairytale Snow White. In the movie version I watched when I was little, the 'witch' makes a sleeping potion and its effects are called the 'Sleeping Death'. So historically speaking, Hags have always been associated with the Draught of Living Death. The ingredients in the letter we got from Headmaster Lear were for that exact same potion. I don't want to say that Headmaster Lear is working for Hags in any way because I know he cares about us but... it's just worrying to think about is all. Another thing I think is worth pointing out is the Hogsmeade thing at the end. First of all, it's misspelled sort of strangely, kind of like a person who's heard it being said but hasn't seen it written down before. Second of all, it's weird that Headmaster Lear can't or won't go to Hogwarts to get the potion ingredients himself. And he makes the rules, right? So he can't have expected two first years to actually go to Hogsmeade. None of this makes sense."

It was at this moment that she realized how long she had been running her mouth for. It was embarrassing, really. She had come here to listen, not to spill all of the Liberation Club's secrets and ruin whatever plan they were going to hatch. "Sorry", she mumbled as she scratched her head. "I talk too much. Professor Jensen, do you know anyone by the name of Finnley in Hogwarts?"
