Who'd've Thought...

Perhaps one would think that a child of twelve would be so interested in reading the Daily Prophet, but when she'd heard the new going around school, she could've wait to get her hands on the paper. There the young snake was, curled up in one of the near antique chairs, pouring over the paper. The girl never thought the day would come where her idol, Hermione Granger, would have stepped down from the Ministry so early... much less that she'd ever see the words "Potter Found Guilty of Murder" strewn across the page.
Chewing on her thumb nail, the girl read the article attentively, then read it again. From what she'd heard and read in her short life, the death of Umbrige was hardly to be considered a terrible loss. She'd never heard one good thing about the woman and the way she was always described sounded down right frightening to the girl... but if the details written in the Daily Prophet were to be believed, they called it an 'Unforgivable Curse' for a reason.
Just as well though, it was Harry Potter, would they really, truly, actually sentence him to Azkaban for life?? She wished there were more quotes and insight into the thoughts and ideas from his friends and peers. She wished the article was longer, she wished to simply know more then what the paper was offered.
Almost as though in defeat, Illowy dropped the paper in her lap and fell back against her seat, running her hand through her hair, "Bloody f'ckin' hell..." she muttered to herself.

I was told I was dangerous. When I asked why, they said, "Because you don't need anyone." That's when I smiled.

Who'd've Thought...
An astonished whistle sounded from somewhere behind the Slytherin second-year. Leaning against the opposite side of the nearest bookshelf was another child of the same house; a first-year Slytherin. "Those are some strong words," he murmured in response, turning a page in his book as he studied an illustration. "What's got a kid like you saying them?"@Illowy Magnard
Closing the book in his lap, Jack pushed himself back up onto his feet, book at his side, and turned around to remove another book from the shelf behind him. Leaning forward, he peered through the hole made by the absence of the tome he'd removed, hoping to spot the speaker of profanity he'd heard just seconds earlier.
"I could be wrong, but I don't think those are the sort of curse words that actually make magic," he joked, grinning. "What's happening over there? Sounds exciting." Jack glanced down at his textbook for magical theory. "More so than my homework assignment, in any case. Or do you always talk like that?"
The redhead set the pair of books in his hand down on the ground beside him, stacking them carefully before adding another to the pile. Then another. The more he added, the larger the gap between the books got and the taller his new tower grew.

Who'd've Thought...

Illowy tensed a bit as she heard a boy make a comment on her choice of words. Icy hues flicked about her for a moment, though when she saw no one she figured the voice must've come from beyond one of the shelves. Given that, Illowy had intended to let the comment slip and simply ignore him; though she was now hyper-aware of him presence as he flicked through the bookshelves and built his tower of tomes, eventually coming to remove a book that allowed him to peer unto her little hiding place.
Her cold gaze quickly found him as she studied his face, placing him among the modest group of first years that had coming into Slytherin this year, "Am I meant to value a ladies' etiquette lesson from the likes of you?" she asked. Illowy tended to have a reputation for icy first impressions; ever so aided by how pale and striking her blue eyes were against her lily skin and contrasted with her dark tresses. Those who had managed to get close to the girl knew better that were was more to the girl then the abrasive, cold front she put up; but that softer side of her was certainly no easy feat to reach, "I speak however I want to."
The second year readjusted herself in her seat, dropping her feet to the floor, "And if you must know, Harry Potter just got sentenced to life in Azkaban and Granger stepped down from the Ministry of Magic." she explained matter-of-factly.
I was told I was dangerous. When I asked why, they said, "Because you don't need anyone." That's when I smiled.

At the young woman's response, Jack sneered softly, not bothering to look up from his book-stacking. "Ooh, someone's defensive," he commented with amusement. "For your information, I don't presume to know anything about etiquette, much less the ladies' sort. If anything, I was impressed by your use of language. But I suppose you were too busy making your own assumptions to deduce that from my choice of words and tone."
He continued to build his book fort, pausing every so often to examine a cover, read a title, or page through a tome. In all honesty, he hadn't expected the other Slytherin to pay him any more attention, so the divulgence of what she had been reading piqued his interest - both of her and the subject matter.
His interest in her stemmed from the fact that she seemed to have chosen the library to read the paper in order to get some peace and quiet away from other people. The fact that she was bothering to talk to some random first-year she apparently thought had been scolding her seemed to directly contradict the insinuations of the first fact. So why?
That may have been due to the subject matter of what she had been reading. If Jack had had any inkling of the wizarding world prior to his being made to go shop for magical school supplies, he might have had a better idea of why the news the girl informed him of was so important to her.
"Harry did what and Granger who?"
As it was, Jack had heard or read a thing or two about Harry Potter, his friends, and his time at Hogwarts, but it certainly wasn't a lot. Thus, he opted to play dumb and simply defaulted to feigning he knew nothing at all about them. Perhaps then, this girl, who was obviously deeply shaken by the people she had named, would choose to explain.

Who'd've Thought...

Illowy rolled her eyes, trying to force herself to ignore the boy completely. That was all cast out the window when he questioned who she was talking about. The expression that crossed her features was nothing less then utterly dumbfounded by his ignorance on the topic, "Harry Potter and Hermione Granger." she pressed, "Harry Potter is the boy who killed the Dark Lord. If you don't know at least that, then you must be Muggle born and you'd wise to brush up because he essentially is the reason you're even at this school, much less even alive today." she spoke matter-of-factly.
Raking thin fingers through her dark hair, the girl stood, "There was this terrible woman who worked for the Ministry, Delores Umbrige. My mother was at the school when she was Headmaster and she said that she was one of the most evil women she'd ever met. The papers are now saying that Potter killed her and now he's going to be sentenced to life in Azkaban, which is the highest maximum security prison in the wizarding world." the older girl tried her best to emphasize the severity she saw in the situation, "And because of all of this, Granger, who you should also know because she is one of the greatest witches of the modern age, and also graduated from this school, has stepped down from her station in the Ministry." she lectured, struggling to keep her voice at a reasonable volume in spite of her passion on the topic, trying to keep into consideration that they were in the Library.

Who'd've Thought...
"Oh, that Moldy Wart fellow. I think I remember something about him," the boy remarked, tapping his chin thoughtfully. "Wait, who's the reason I'm at this school? Potty, or Wart?" Perhaps he was being a bit facicious then, but he couldn't resist when the girl was so clearly bothered by his apparent ignorance. Besides, she seemed more than happy to lecture him, so Jack couldn't see the harm."Funny that Wart was called 'the Dark Lord'. I heard he was terribly pale."
He listened more raptly than he feigned to, continuing with the construction of his fort and the casual browsing of books every so often. History was his favorite subject, after all, and what the girl had read in the newspaper had sounded like history in the making. In spite of this, Jack - who worked very hard to maintain his reputation as a sub-par student who cared very little for studies or anything other than his own amusement - was adamant that his housemate not catch on to the truth depth of his interest. However, he didn't want her to think he was completely aloof, either, lest she gave up on attempting to inform him altogether.
With enough books removed from the shelf, Jack was able rest his arms on one, using it for support as he peeked through to the other side in order to get a better view of his addresser. "Wow...that Potty person really likes killing people, doesn't he? So he wasn't imprisoned for murdering Wart, but he is now for offing this ex-Headmaster Umbridge? Kind of a drastic difference, isn't it?"
He frowned, pausing a moment to scratch his head. "What's this great Granger witch stepping down for, then? Is it because she's ashamed of being associated with Potty? Or something like trying to take a stand and saying she won't work for the Ministry until they let him go?"
