The Art That Connects Us
@Lamik Fillestar
Things after the catastrophe that was the Blossom Ball had finally begun to settle back to normal. Illowy had managed to finally get herself back on track with her studies, finally getting into a routine to help deal with what had happened to her. The only physical evidence she had left on her from that night were the burn scars that climbed up her arms, but thankful that was hidden most days by her uniform and robes.
The girl readjusted her bag on her shoulder as she made her way into the library, wanting to get a little more studying and research in for the day before it was time for dinner. As icy blue eyes swept around for a place to sit, she spied an open seat near a blonde lad who looked to be a first year as well. She made her way towards the seat, her eye catching on what the boy was doing. His pencil thoughtfully stroked on the paper and she couldn't help but pause and watch quietly over his shoulder for a moment.
Thin fingers tucked a tress of long brown hair behind her ears. She wondered why he might be putting such thought into the picture, every line was so deliberate as though... he might be designing something, "What's that?" she asked abruptly, dropping her things to the floor and pulled out the seat beside him as she sat. She couldn't even be sure if the lad had known she was there in the first place or if she might've startled him; having a way with being too quiet at times.

I was told I was dangerous. When I asked why, they said, "Because you don't need anyone." That's when I smiled.

Lamik was deeply focused, a pencil that he had brought from home in his hand moving methodically and meaningfully across the parchment. Though he liked drawing, Lamik wasn't really doing what he was for fun at the moment. The lines that he made originated more from momentary instinct than from a form of creativity, but the drawing he was currently working on could still be recognizable as a rook from a non-magical game of chess. Not entirely sure- or aware of exactly what he wanted his end goal to be, Lamik simply kept drawing, figuring that whenever what he was making was completed he would know it.
"What's that?"
Lamik nearly fell off of his seat. He had been so focused on creating whatever it was he was drawing that he hadn't even noticed somebody sneaking up behind him. As he turned to face the source of the voice with a sigh, he answered in a surprisingly plain way considering that others may try to keep what he was doing personal and private: "It's a brand- A coat of arms if you will."
Lamik looked the owner of the voice over. She was a young, pretty girl, probably a first year like him. From the looks of it, she was part of Slytherin. "You scared me half to death!"

The lad nearly jumped out of his skin when she startled him. All the same she hardly paid his statement any mind after he informed her how she'd apparently frightened him so terribly, "You'll survive, lad." she assured him, leaning in a bit more to get a better look at his creature, "A brand?" she echoed. Illowy, personally, had never encountered a Muggle game of chess. Naturally, she knew it was a thing, but she'd never actually seen one, much less played. The pieces for Wizard Chess were so intricate and pretty, unlike the simple shapes of Muggle Chess. To her, the rook simply looked like a tower.
"Not that its not good or anything, but... what is a tower suppose to represent?" she questioned, for once trying carefully to not allow her tone to come across as condescending or cynical. If there was one thing Illowy would watch her tone about, it was other people's art. Being an artist herself, she didn't like to make people feel discouraged about their skill, knowing that, like it was for her, it could be both a source of pride and also a sensitive insecurity.

Lamik thought about how best to explain what he meant by a brand. "Well... yes, a brand. I recently learned of an... interesting ability I have. A form of magic that I suppose I've developed subconsciously. I've done my research, and I've figured out that it's called a binding mark. Have you ever heard of it before?" If she hadn't- which he had to be honest, she probably hadn't- Lamik thought he would have quite a hard time explaining it well. After all, he hadn't discovered the full extent of his abilities himself, so how could he hope to accurately define the magic to others?
The question about the tower threw Lamik off a little. If he was being honest, the boy wasn't sure himself. Lamik had just been drawing in a state that was somehow both focused and dreamlike at the same time. The rook wasn't the final product that he was looking for, but it was something close, he was sure of it. Wanting not to look like a complete idiot but deciding that honesty was the best policy, Lamik said what he thought would, in fact, make him look like a complete and utter idiot. "I'm not sure what it represents- if anything at all. I wasn't even completely aware that I was drawing something recognizable myself until you decided to interrupt me if I'm being honest. Not that I mind, of course. It's always good to meet new people."

A binding mark. It sounded familiar and she was sure she'd read something that at least touched on the topic. She couldn't recall reading anything absolutely specific on it before, though. Or maybe her mother had spoken to her about it once before during a lesson? That was very possible, her mother touched on a lot of different spells when she was being home schooled.
"It vaguely rings a bell." she spoke, her tone a bit unsure as she continued to study the picture.
The girl hardly batted an eye when he meantioned that she had interrupted him, much less the fact that she'd nearly scared the life out of him as well with her abruptness. What was one to do, however, when one's curiosity was piqued?
"Yes, meeting new people is very well and all, but what is it; A Binding Mark?" this day in age, one didn't often have to mark their spells to keep them in tact. Perhaps with more complex potions and hexes, but those were of rare use to students. Or did this particular spell have an entirely different function that was alluding her usual knowledge. Perhaps it may be something of use to her one day.

Lamik thought for a few moments, not sure exactly how to explain. "It's like..." he began before trailing off. "It's like I can connect with people- God, how do I explain it without sounding insane?" The boy ran a hand through his hair and sighed. "So if I want, I have the ability to brand somebody. All I need is skin contact and I can form a permanent link in our minds. I know where they are at all times and they know where I am at all time. Along with that, we can communicate telepathically or something. Like talking but over any distance and we don't have to say anything out loud. And... you can never remove it or anything and you get this permanent tattoo thing somewhere in your body."
Quickly realizing that he had probably phrased those few sentences in an extremely stupid way, a light blush crept onto Lamiks cheeks. "I don't think it can be considered a spell- more of a ritual, though it doesn't really require anything more than skin contact, intent, and a few seconds of focusing." Lamik was aware that there was a dark wizard a few dozen years ago who did something similar to his folowers, though he could not remember the wizards name.
