Ruka hadn't really felt like himself im days.
He had had strangely little contact with Donny since the Blossom Ball, which made him feel like a proper loner, he had been hung up on meeting Alex for the first time, who hadn't left his head for even a second ever since he'd first seen him dance, and he hadn't heard from his father since the last ominous letter about his health, which made him feel horrible.
So when he had woken up this morning, checked the fields to see if Donny was there, checked the rehearsal room to see if Alex was there, and checked the owlery to see if he had gotten a new letter, he decided to retreat to the library.
Maybe he would manage to get some homework done; while he had gotten quite good at Charms, he was definitely struggling a bit with Defense Against the Dark Arts, so maybe...
However, when he did get to the library, he found himself pulling out a book on dragons, one on Kelpies, and his usual copy of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. In passing, he also pulled out a copy of Quidditch Through the Ages, which didn't exactly fit with the rest, but Ruka had found it to be a great read whenever he was a bit stressed.
He took his books to a nearby, empty table and sat down; books in a neat pile to his left, and a piece of parchment, feather and ink in front of him, just in case.
He took the copy of Fantastic Beasts and opened it to a random page, smiling when he was met with the entry on Kelpies.
He did find them rather magnetic.
Skimming through it, he dipped his feather into some ink and started doodling; the head of a dragon, a few circles here and there, a hanging stick man, the golden snitch, Alex' name in each corner -
Alex' name in each corner?
He blushed a bit as he realised that and quickly put the feather away, trying instead to concentrate on his book again, but his hectic movements caused the table to wobble and his books to fall down to the ground with a heavy thump.
"By Merlin's..." he breathed out, repeating a phrase he had heard countless purebloods and halfbloods mutter under their breath sometimes. He quickly slid down to his knees to collect his books, and then he just stayed there, kneeling under the table as if, maybe, that way, he could turn invisible to all the other students in the library.

Ardis was in the library to see if she could find a book on hippogriffs. Or maybe dragons? She wasn't quite sure yet, but she most definitely wanted to read more in-depth about a magical creature or two.

Admittedly, she'd been avoiding the library just in case a certain Gryffindor was around, but to her relief, he wasn't anywhere to be seen. Granted, that didn't mean he wouldn't pop up if she spent too long there. Ardis tucked some of her hair behind her ear and went to a shelf to start quickly skimming the spines. Surely there had to be more books on hippogriffs. Or unicorns? Professor Griffith had said they ate a diet similar to horses—just that they were more particular about the quality of the plants they chose. So undoubtedly there were more fun facts to learn!

Just as her fingers brushed the spine of a book on unicorns, a loud thump resonated throughout the space. Ardis jumped slightly, and looked around. It sounded like it had come from nearby. Perhaps it was... No, it isn't. Stop it, Ardis.
She grabbed the book and hugged it to her chest before cautiously approaching the source of the thump.

It was surprising to see the boy under the table, surrounded by the books that had made the sound. She glanced around, but noticed there wasn't really anyone near them. So... it was unlikely that someone had pushed the books off the table. Ardis moved closer to him, still hugging the book.

"Erm... excuse me?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "Are you okay?"
She set her book on the corner of the table and went around so she could kneel beside him and help gather his books, and perhaps himself.

Against all hopes that maybe the ground would open up and swallow him whole, Ruka found himself looking at a pair of feet approaching.
Clearly someone had heard the books falling and was now checking to see what had happened.
He held his breath for a moment before looking up into a pair of blue eyes, a blush covering his cheeks as he gave the girl who had found him a little smile.
He slowly moved to collect the books from the ground, still blushing furiously. "I'm fine," he promised, crawling out from underneath the table and standing up, the pile of books wobbling a little in his arms. He carefully sat them down on the table again, right next to his feather and parchment, before turning to the girl who had tried to help him.
She seemed nice enough, the emblem on her cloak revealing that she was a Hufflepuff, her hair was a gentle brown, much more subtle than his own unruly head of red, and she was a bit taller than him, which, who wasn't?
Well, Alex wasn't.
He shook his head off the thought before he could start obsessing over the boy again, and instead gave the girl a big smile. "I, uh, accidentally pushed my books off the table and... Yeah..." he explained a little awkwardly before gesturing for the girl to sit down in the chair next to his own. "Sorry you had to see that." He chuckled, shrugging his shoulders a bit as if it was no big deal. "I'm Ruka, by the way. I don't think we've met...?" He frowned a bit as he tried to recall whether he had seen the girl in class before. "Unless we have potions together, then I might have seen you around? Either way, what's your name?"

Due to his short stature, she wasn't immediately sure if she'd really seen him around before. Ardis smiled a little as she sat down in the other chair at the table. She felt glad to actually sit and talk with someone. This was nice! Even if he seemed to be the type of student to push his books off the table (which was a little odd, but pushing books off a table might be a stress reliever!). The red hair seemed familiar to her, and after a moment of thought, she nodded.

"Yes, we have potions together, I think. Ah, my name is Ardis. It's good to meet you officially, Ruka." Ardis smiled. "It looks like none of your books were damaged—that's good. It would be a shame if they were. Erm, you're reading about kelpies? Do you mind if I ask what's drawn you to them? They are fascinating, of course! I just don't know much about them."

This was a conversation! One where she could talk about magical creatures with someone who was hopefully as interested in them as she was. She hadn't had a discussion about them with another student. And here she thought she'd have to wait till third year for that!

Ruka sighed in relief when the girl - Ardis - sat down at the table with him, obviously not too freaked out to have found him under the table surrounded by his books.
He nodded with a grin when she affirmed that they did have Potions together; He had a really bad memory for faces, but he did know a couple of people from Hufflepuff so of course he usually checked everyone with a yellow sigil twice to make sure it wasn't someone he knew.
"Yeah, I like Kelpies," he said, beaming at the girl next to him. It was rare for him to find someone who appreciated Magical Creatures like he did, so he was happy that Ardis had started that conversation. "The Loch Ness Monster is a Kelpie, did you know?" he said excitedly, fumbling with his feather and smoothing over the scribbled on parchment like he didn't really know what to do with his hands. "They're shapeshifters, that's really cool to me." He shrugged a bit, cheeks reddening a bit as he talked.
Most things he knew about Magical Creatures he knew from books, so he always felt a little but awkward telling other students anything about them - A lot of them probably already saw creatures like that first hand. "Do you like magical creatures too?"

Ardis nodded excitedly. "I do! I'm a little new to all this... erm, I didn't really grow up with magic, so I want to learn as much as possible. Especially about magical creatures. I didn't know the Loch Ness Monster was a kelpie! Perhaps I ought to get a book on them..." She trailed off in thought. "Are they your favorite creatures, then? Kelpies? How did you hear about them?"

She wanted to ask Ruka if he was okay. After all, students didn't typically hide under tables with their books. She hoped he was fine, but, since they had just met, it seemed a bit rude to pry. Instead, she was quite content with asking about magical creatures. Oddly enough, she hadn't really spoken to another student about them. Possibly because she was afraid of being seen as dense for not knowing certain facts about unicorns or imps.

So it was nice to just have a conversation. Chances were, he was all right with not bringing up why he was under the table, either. Perhaps, if the moment arose, she would ask. But for now, Ardis settled in to hear his answer. She placed her hands in her lap and looked over at him.
