Ariana skipped into the library in her new, crisp uniform and robes. She was hoping that she would find a good book (hopefully it would be about dragons, for she wanted to become a dragon trainer), a new friend and a quite corner to read in. Making her way towards the far left of the library, Ariana greeted everyone she saw with a warm, cheery smile. Quietly, she sang to herself while running a hand across the dusty books on the shelves which towered above her. Ariana had heard her favorite song on the radio the other day, and it got stuck in her head. Finally she came upon the book she was looking for, “The perfectionists guide to dragon care.” Squealing happily, and earning a couple of harsh “SHHHHHS” from nearby students, Ariana grabbed the book and walked back down the row of bookshelves. After dodging a couple of flying books ( and getting hit by some), Ariana found the perfect corner and smiled. She opened the book and was immediately hit by the familiar smell of ink on parchment and sighed. It reminded her of home, and the library in town. The thought of her home was enough to send Ariana to tears, but she was not going to be seen crying in such a public place. Wiping a few tears from her eyes, Ariana began to read the first chapter.

Katie had found two of the things Ariana seemed to want. a good book and a quiet place to read. she had no desire for a new friend, honestly. It really wasnt anything against friends, they were great. in fact, they were WONDERFUL. it was the effort (the terefying fear of being rejected) that made friendship so hard. so she just avoided it altogether, prefering to read about people and THEIR friends (who were far better friend makers than she.) Fantasy, that was her jam.

then she looked up when she heard the sound of ariana's squeal. it was joy. she looked like Kayla when she got a role in their town's local yearly play. Oh, the girl was happy. good. there were a few kids shushing her, but Katie wasnt among them. Yes, she would like to read in quiet, but she also liked seeing other people happy. she didnt mind them showing it. she just watched the girl with her trademark silent as a mouse gaze until she sat beside her. Oh, was she crying? Katie took notes in the margins of her books on her emotions while reading. stuff like "oh, no, he's going to stab her" or the like. that was the smell of ink. but she didnt connect it to the sad girl, trying to hold it together.

"are you o-okay?" she whispered, from the other side of the window seat that they were currently sharing. the small girl was curled up, making her look like nothing more than a pile of robes with red hair and blue eyes. her voice was quiet, not just because of the library but also because she was nervous to talk to another person she didnt know. she'd probably be rejected.

Although the library was barely half as large as the one back home, Guinevere found herself reminiscing about past adventures through the bookshelves, pulling out as many books as she could carry, which almost always happened to be seven, and reading in a lonely corner. The books would be about anything with an interesting enough title, from Whimsical Whales with Wondrous Wings to How to Make Your Pet Hippogriff Think It's a House Cat. Most of the time she recalled the most peculiar and notable facts but right now she could only recall that this wasn't home.

Guinevere had come to study, or that was the main goal, but the strange calling of books she somewhat recognized dreww her in. She truly would choose literature over humans, they were more reliable in her opinion. If you were in the mood for adventure you would be satisfied in a book in the end while someone could easily chicken out or ruin everything in reality. That's why she buried herself in the written word of people she didn't care to talk to in real life, but like now for instance she had to answer to the human call to interact with other people, just to keep things in balance.

She so happened to take interest in the altercation of a few students, although most of the noise came from the Shushers, however ironic that was. She was carrying her parchments, inks, and her astronomy and herbology books, which she could've easily set down at the nearest table, but Guinevere decided to follow the two girls. The first one, a squeaky Hufflepuff, was shedding tears, hopefully not about the shushing, and the other was a cheery yet hesistant Ravenclaw who went to comfort the other girl. Guinevere found this charming, and a little amusing, but she decided to play sympathetic as well, out of reluctance to do her school work.

Joining the two, she offered the Hufflepuff a warm smile and placed a hand on her shoulder. The girl had been busy about to read her book but it was probably nice to at least ask if she were okay. "Sorry if I'm bothering you, you just looked a little sad, was wondering if you were alright?" She moved her hand to get a better grip on her own things.

Moving to sit at an arm chair nearby, Guinevere plopped down with a huge sigh and gazed out the window, then eyeing the two. They seemed more like close friends than strangers, sitting that close. Grinning slightly, she asked, "Are you two friends? You seem to know each other a bit." She'd suspected the exact opposite but didn't let it on.

Ariana looked up suprised. “oh! I’m sorry if I disturbed you! It’s just this library reminds me so much of home, and it made me a little homesick.... but thank you both for asking!” Ariana said with a smile. She then looked over to Guinevere and shook her head, “ I don’t think I have met either of you before.... but hopefully we could become friends?” Ariana asked before realizing it must have been too straight forward.“ I mean it’s totally ok if you say no! I just was hoping to make some friends here cause it’s my first year and all... heh” Ariana rambled running a hand through her chestnut colored hair, making it straighten and than curling back up. Ariana glanced over at the girl beside her and realized she handn’t intoduced herself . “ oh! Where are my manners? Im Ariana Jackson, first year hufflepuff and aspiring dragon trainer!” Ariana said with a small smile, hoping she wouldn’t come off as a ill-mannered idiot who didn’t know her left from right. Ariana straightened the tie around her neck and began fiddling with the hem of her skirt, nervousness overtaking her. ‘ what if they don’t like me?’ She thought.

Well, now everyone was coming to party on her window seat, and Katie wasn’t enthusiastic about it.

It wasn’t the people themselves, the huffle girl seemed nice enough. But now the fact that two people she didn’t know were looking at her? It was overwhelming. Katie clammed up, perfectly happy to let the more extroverted girl do the talking.

Katie sat on the left side of the windowseat, Ariana sat on the right side, and the other girl stood looking at them both.

Katie found herself blushing fervently at the other girl’s words. Something about her just gave out an odd vibe to Katie. She found herself tongue tied. So she did what she always did when she was a blushy mess. Buried her face in her robes. Of course, her ears still showed the bright red that had taken over her cheeks, but now she was just watching them both with blue eyes coming out of a sea of blue and bronze robes.

When Ariana introduced herself, stumbling over the words, and backtracking fervently, Katie recognized every feeling she was going through. Nervousness, an overwhelming fear that everyone secretly hated you and you weren’t going to make any friends to the point where you didn’t bother to try. Well, maybe that wasn’t exactly it for her, she was still trying. But that was why Katie couldn’t talk right now, her tongue wouldn’t work. But she nodded, ever so slightly, her face still buried in her robes, when she asked if they could be friends.

For a brief second Guinevere felt a little sorry that she'd joined the conversation, the girls seemed even more uneasy than she'd expected, especially the Ravenclaw, but maybe, she figured, it was jitters from making new friends. She couldn't relate, making friends was only for strategy or comfort, and right now she wasn't sure which. She did know that she being as kind as possible, although that didn't seem to be what the second girl was thinking.

Ariana was clear about what she wanted to do, make friends, and about her future career. Guinevere actually wanted to do the same thing, but maybe also have a dragon farm, so she could breed them. There were a lot of different types with different abilities and she'd want to see them grow up for herself. Either that or be something in the Ministry like her dad.

Oh, wait, now they both were squeaky. She really hoped it wasn't her, she didn't feel like getting up to find another comfortable place to study. The armchair was almost sleep-inducing, which is why she propped up a book behind her back so she wouldn't start snoring a sonnet for everyone in the vicinity. The book was very astronomy, thankfully, because it was a very thick book. That was both a good and bad thing, she loved anything about the stars but she liked reading on her own time, not reading as a chore.

Guinevere wait a minute so the Ravenclaw could introduce herself but she didn't seem ready yet so she cleared her throat and said, "I'm Guinevere. Blackleach. Guinevere Blackleach. I'm a Gryffindor." She held up a piece of the red fabric that lined the collar of her cloak, proving it.

Suddenly she had the notion that she should address the nervous case nearby. "Are you alright? If I'm bothering you, I'm sorry, just wanted to talk to someone...for a bit..." She began to get up, waiting for the Ravenclaw's answer.

Ariana smiled, and then realized that the girl next to her was a pile of robes and seemed to be a little overwhelmed. " omg omg omg! i'm soooo sorry for making you nervous! i didn't mean to upset anyone or hurt you or make you uncomfortable. i'm so sorry!" Ariana apologized over and over again. But when she noticed the ravenclaw had given the slightest nod, she smiled and thought ' maybe i will make a friend today!’
Ariana had her book open to page on Swiss fintail dragons, which were her favorite, Ariana though at for a moment before asking; “what’s your favorite subject so far? Mines..... potions, I think” Ariana smiled, thinking of the potion she brewed earlier today.
It was aromentia, a potion she learned to brew from her mother. It is said that it is the most powerful love potion in the world, and it smells like your favorite things. For Ariana it was chocolate, the ocean and the smell of wet pavement after a summers rain.
She didn’t know why, but those things had always been her favorite things, chocolate because of her sweet tooth, the ocean because of her home and the pavement because it brought back one of her earliest memories.

Katie just wanted everyone to stop looking at her. it was so scary to have multiple pairs of eyes you werent framiliar with boring through your skin and into your soul. (goodness, was Katie in for a doozie when she had to give her first presentation). the worst part was they were both such nice people. they seemed genuinely sad when she retreated to the reletive safety of her robes.

oh, that made katie feel even worse.

and when she felt bad, she got tounge tied. literally. Katie had a monster of a stutter when she was nervous, and now it seemed to be coming in full force, which meant she couldnt even tell them what was wrong. "i- i- i-..." she couldnt even get the word it out solidly. God. she was a wreck. "i-i-i-i i't-t-s..." she stopped again, taking a breath to try and control herself. while she'd been born with a stutter, it got worse when she was nervous. she'd mostly practiced it away when she was calm, so when she wasnt scared one would be hard pressed to notice. but now they knew and her face just got redder and UGH why couldnt she be better at making friends? she DESPRATELY wanted them to like her, and she was being a total weirdo.

Realizing she was making the poor girl nervous , Ariana came to the conclusion that she was overwhelmed. " oh! i'm so sorry... would it be better if i looked the other way? " Ariana asked the Ravenclaw, desperate to help her. Ariana felt so horrible for making someone sad, and after hearing the girl stutter she felt even worse. 'maybe i wont make a knew friend today' she thought, turning to look out the window hoping to help the girl calm down. " hey, how about we play a game? to help sooth the nerves?" Ariana suggested, " i used to do it with my cousins. you pick an item and try imagine what it would feel like to be that object." Ariana smiled. " i'll go first..." Ariana decided to imagine herself as a blade of grass, rustling in the wind. " after you choose the object, you have to describe it to the other person, and they have to guess." she explained, before saying; " the wind rustles the blades around me, and i allow my self to dance along with my neighbors... when suddenly a shadow passes by me and i realize ' its a snowflake!"

Rose entered the library, not entirely sure of what she wanted to read but determined to just read something. She roamed up and down the aisles, scanning the shelves for something to catch her eye. However long she looked she just couldn't find something that fit the mood she was in. Noticing three girls together, Rose thought about approaching them for suggestions. She even started to walk towards them, but then she wondered what she was going to say and she stopped in her tracks.

Socialization had never been a strong point for Rose, and she tried to avoid the uncomfortable silence of not knowing what to say whenever she could. It's fine, she tried to reason with herself. You'll just ask for a book recommendation and then be on your merry way.

Taking a deep breath and reassuring herself that there was no way for there to be that horrible awkward tension, she took steady steps towards the girls. Upon reaching them she said,
"Hi, I'm hoping I'm not bothering any of you, but do you have any good book recommendations? I'm in desperate need of some light reading."
Being in front of them now made her realize that she didn't know what to do with her hands, and fumbled around with them for a bit before settling on fidgeting with a gold bracelet her father had given to her before she left for Hogwarts.
