The first thing Ami had noticed when she'd returned to England was that everyone was just so... short. Really, they were. In America, Ami was used to being in maybe the middle of the pack, forever dwarfed by the football and basketball players in her grade, yet still looking down on the shorter children. However, upon her arrival to her hometown, she found she towered a good five or six inches above a majority of her year. Hogwarts proved to be no different.

Because of her height, Ami found she was easily able to browse all levels of the library, whereas other students were at a bit of a disadvantage. Reaching up to the top shelf, she pulled down a couple of biographies that she realized might be useful for completion of her History of Magic homework (Emeric the Evil, and so forth), and carefully balanced them in her arms and she continued her methodical approach through the shelves.

Upon reaching the fiction section, she reached above a small Ravenclaw boy's head to grab one of her all-time favorite stand-alone books, They Both Die at the End, from gay genius Adam Silvera. Sighing happily to herself, she stuck it on top of the seven or eight other books already in her arms, and looked down at the Ravenclaw staring up at the shelves above him. "Need help?" she offered. "Did you need something in particular?"

Wingardium Leviosa could not come soon enough. The library was a sacred spot and almost every book was accessible to students, provided that is that you’re about five and a half feet tall or carry a step ladder to hand. If you haven’t had a growth spurt in a few years then that’s tough luck kiddo.

It would be nice if Grayson could say he was kneeling to look at the books on the bottom shelf but he wasn’t. He was just standing there looking at... well the books on the bottom shelves, when the Hufflepuff girl blindsided him. To be fair it’s pretty easy to sneak up on Grayson when there’s books around, he’s hardly focussed. Her hand whipped over his head and if he’d been about a foot taller it could have brushed his hair! Maybe she was half giant or something, although to be fair she wasn’t really that tall he was just that small.

It only took him a moment to recover as he eyed the book she grabbed, Silvera huh, not a bad book although not one of his absolute favourites. He blinked as she spoke, for some reason he hadn’t quite expected her to speak.

"What makes you think I need help" he blurted before biting his own tongue. He was sensitive over his height and it seemed patronising but then she wasn’t directly insulting his height, heck it may even have been nice. "sorry," he mumbled, "You read that one before? There’s a spoiler alert if not."

"I love this book!" Ami exclaimed with a happy sigh. "I must've read it only about over a thousand times, or so, within the week it came out," Ami said quietly with a small smile, hugging her stack of books to her chest. Hah, came out. Haha, that was certainly a good one- she'd have to remember to share it with Thomas later, write it to him in an owl, or something. "Although, one might infer the rather depressing spoiler from the title, considering the circumstances Mr. Silvera gives us." Glancing at the Ravenclaw's empty hands, she found herself teasing light-heartedly, "Can't find anything good to read, yet?"

Here, Ami trailed off, and with a start, realized she hadn't introduced herself yet. Manners are paramount; crucial; only the most important thing in the universe, Ami darling!, Ami heard her mom lecture from a far-off, distant memory. "I'm Ami- from Hufflepuff, although that's on my robes and such. I'd shake your hand, but... I'm a tad bit occupied." She immediately clammed up, realizing she probably sounded overly chatty and nosy. Shush, shush, shush. No one wants to hear your stupidly annoying voice, anyways. Let the decent humans of the world speak, for once.

Oh this was going to become a social thing. Typical of a Hufflepuff to turn the library into a social hangout, next there’ll probably be bean bags. Still if he was going to get dragged into something at least it was about books.

“I’m actually already maxed out... they won’t let me take any more out until I bring some back.”
Unfortunately even Hogwarts had adopted lending limits, “I’m just making a list of what else I can read... I kind of like the some of the fantasy stuff. I mean it’s almost all complete drivel but it’s still cool plus I like how close some muggles get.” He had started out quite confident but was rapidly trailing off as he realised how stupid it sounded for a wizard to like muggle fantasies. His hands started to sweat as he fiddled with the hat of his robe.

“I.. I’m Grayson... Grayson Abonos... I didn’t think Hufflepuffs liked books like that.” it was a stupid thing to say and he found himself regretting it immediately but it was out now and far too late to take it back, “I didn’t mean it like... yeah... sorry again.” Why was he such an idiot he tried so hard to say the right thing but always managed to screw it up.

Ami grinned, and shot at Grayson, "Well, you'll probably find I'm not like most Hufflepuffs." As if on cue, her arms started to tingle, but she pushed those types of thoughts to the back of her mind. You promised... you promised, Ami. You promised him that you'd try. "But it's okay-" Ami added quickly, trying to gap the awkward silence. "There're abnormalities everywhere if you know where to look."

Shifting the books in her arms, Ami started towards the librarian, wondering exactly how on earth she was supposed to get these all back to her dorm. Maybe she'd use the secret passageway Kyden had shown her- but not in front of this Ravenclaw, no, not in front of him. After all... you promised you wouldn't show anyone without his permission. I guess you're walking, now. "Maybe I'll see you in class sometime soon," Ami said politely, trudging over to the librarian. "But, well..." she glanced at her stack of books in her arms and laughed embarrassedly. "I've got a butt-load of books to carry back to the common room. I'll catch you later!" With that, she turned on her heel and shuffled off to the librarian, with every intention to make it to the common room without dropping her books.

Grayson was actually quite impressed by Ami in the end. She really didn’t seem like what Grayson had envisioned being a typical Hufflepuff after all, indeed she was observant and seemed genuinely inquisitive, not to mention her love of books. Maybe she would have made a good Ravenclaw as well. It was going to make Grayson actually question his beliefs in the sorting system, maybe everyone didn’t fit perfectly into one of four categories, maybe there were more hat stalls than he had thought.

He pondered the thought for a good few moments before he realised he was alone now and that Ami was marching off in the opposite direction ”Oh... Yeah! I’ll see you later.” He immediately regretted calling out, it was the library curse it! He’d just raised his voice in a library, surely that was at least seven years bad luck, or worse what if it affected his lending limits! Feeling his face heat he quickly dropped his head and like a wounded animal scurried further back into the stacks, hopefully no one would recognise him and he could pretend that he had never done anything quite so foolish, at least they hadn’t been by the work tables so there was no one around.
