She spent a lot of time in the library. Syrah wasn't necessarily a quiet girl, she had simply not met anyone of interest yet and she, instead of hanging out in the Common Room in Slytherin with friends, she would browse the library shelves in her down time. However, her visit to the library today had a more specific purpose. The young witch had heard of the dueling club, and wanted in. But she didn't know any spells, let alone any spells that would be useful in a duel against another wizard. So instead of waiting patiently for her teachers to teach her something that honestly she didn't think they would get to any time soon, if ever, she thought to seek out the information herself.

To be honest, she didn't really know where to begin. She had heard of spells that disarm opponents, ones that throw them back a ways, but she didn't know if they were charms or spells or what the difference between those even are. She felt completely hopeless wandering through the isles. There were only a few subjects she could honestly dismiss. Magical Creatures, Muggle Studies, Potions, ect. But Transfiguration, Charms and others like that, she had no idea if they could hold any use to her. So she was down to slowly strolling down each isle, looking carefully at each book spine. She wasn't having much luck.

At the moment Syrah was going down probably her tenth isle of blind searching. This isle was by the outside wall of the castle, every few feet there would be a window with a cushion for holing up with a book. Syrah herself enjoyed those seats on the occasion. She could see, about halfway down the isle, a kid, near her age, sitting with a book. She thought maybe she could ask him herself. She didn't really want to, not because she was shy, she really wasn't all that much. More because she didn't like admitting failure. It was stupid, she knew, especially in this occasion, it was a simple problem. But still.

Swallowing her pride simply because she was desperate and bored, she walked up the the kid. Feeling a little bad, he looked pretty into his book, she piped up. "Hey, sorry. I've been looking everywhere. Do you have any idea where I could find a book about... uh dueling spells?"

The kid seemed shocked. His head turned to look at her rapidly, and for a second she thought maybe he was pissed she interrupted him, but then she saw a look of confusion in his eyes. Crud, this guy probably had no idea what she was talking about, he looked around her own age, probably just as clueless. She sighed a tiny bit.

The boy popped up just as quick as he looked at her before. Syrah took half a step back in surprise. And then he started talking... and didn't really stop. Syrah just stared in silence. But, oh hey, dueling books a few isles down? Nice! She scrunched up her face at herself. How did she miss it? Speaking of books, she took a quick glance at his. He said it was a Grimiore. That had something to do with spells, maybe there was something useful in his book as well? Well it didn't matter really did it? If there really was a book dedicated to dueling that would be of more use to her now that his book of spells. It was probably pretty similar to the textbook, Book of Spells, which she had browsed through before even coming to the Library and hadn't much luck.

Almost as quickly as the boy started speaking, he cut himself off. And then suddenly his hand was outstretched towards her. She leaned back instinctively and looked at it. Zachary Parsons of Hufflepuff. Yeah, that made sense. Hufflepuffs were always either too talkative or too quiet. That explained her mother too. Though she should have noticed the color of his robes and realized his house quicker. She should really start paying more attention to people instead of kinda just looking through them. Bad habit. Nodding to herself she took the boys hand and shook it a solid two times before dropping it again. "Syrah Steele, First Year, Slytherin." She quickly introduced herself, almost robotically, she's said those words so many time in that order since starting at Hogwarts. "Where'd you say the books were?" She asked, trying to get to the point.

The very talkative boy became very quiet all of a sudden, but he moved and motioned for Syrah to follow him. A good sign, she thought, as she assumed he was leading her to the dueling books he mentioned before, which, of course, was exactly what she wanted. Zachary led her down an isle she had been before and she scrunched her face up in frustration. She had already looked here, how had she missed it? It crossed her mind that the boy might have no idea what he was talking about and was simply leading her to a random place in the Library in hopes that there would be a book that contained some kind of spell and he would use that as an answer to the girls question. She shook her head, no, she had to give him a bit of benefit of the doubt, she had no idea, yet, if he knew what he was talking about and she would know in just a few moments. Be patient.

The boy stopped in the middle of an isle a tiny bit of time later and he reached up above both of their heads to a shelf Syrah realized she had not looked at before, simply because she was too short to see it. She knew it was there, obviously, but didn't want to exert the effort it would take to look at all the highly placed books since she figured she could find something useful in her reach. Apparently she was wrong and watched as the boy, who was really not much taller than she was, extend himself painfully and grab a book for her.

Beginners Dueling Rules and Spells, now that was what she was talking about. Instantly distracted, she took the book from the boy without acknowledging him and started to page through it. She didn't know what she was looking for yet, but just wanted to get a feel for the book, see if it probably had anything useful or not. Once she realized the kid started walking away without a word, she felt bad. She closed the book in her hands and turned to shout after him. "Hey! Thank you!" she quietly yelled, remembering they were still in a Library. In order to not continue her yelling, she jogged lightly to catch up to him.

"Hey, uh," She began, unsure, "Do you know any of these spells? Like for dueling? Maybe we could practice together?" It wasn't because she necessarily liked the kid, in fact she though he was a little strange, extremely talkative to extremely quiet in a moments notice, but she did think it would be easier to practice with someone, rather than alone. And this shy boy seemed like the perfect person to practice with since his demeanor didn't seem to competitive or confidant, and Syrah didn't really feel like dealing with someone more mentally self-assured than herself.

Unfortunately for her, the boy didn't know any useful spells for dueling. She sighed internally, she was hoping for some easy lessons as other students are nearly as demanding as teachers and almost always enjoy feeling superior to others.

Oh well, at least he seemed kind if knowledgeable in the written lessons. Plus he knew his way around the library and that could always prove useful. She grinned at him, glad he accepted her offer.

"My father works in the Ministry too. Nothing interesting though, so I think I'll do something else." She laughed. "What department does your father work in?"  She tried to imagine working beside her father at the Ministry. At least in his department - there was no way Syrah could do that without being miserable. She wasn't even one hundred percent sure what her fathers duties were, honestly. She wasn't completely against working at the Ministry itself one day, there were some departments that seemed interesting. But for now she thought something in the field, hands on, was for her.

Anyway, Syrah watched as her new companion grabbed a few more books. Stances and stuff. She didn't realize those were important. She sauinted at herself, she really needed to research more. As he got the books, Syrah led the way to an open table for them to sprawl out on.

As the pair spread out on the table, Syrah grabbed one of the books the boy had laid down. She realized sometime between grabbing the first magical book and getting to the table, that there was more to Dueling than just the Spells. Although she wanted to know the Spells, she understood that she should probably know everything else as well. The book she grabbed at that moment was titled The Dueling Process. As she fliped through it she saw that the book was mainly about subjects like the rules of setting up a match, and other beginner aspects of dueling.

Syrah figured she did not need to know the the rules of creating a match at this moment, figuring that the school would do it for her. Although she realized that she would eventually need to know this information, and decided she would come back to it later.

For now she settled on a section about stances in dueling. Before this very moment she did not know that dueling had stances, or what stances in this context even were. Did they aid the wizard in casting successful spells, or were they more physical, aiding the Duelist in dodging and moving around?

As she continued to read about neutral, aggressive, and defensive stances, Syrah looked up at her partner at the table. The boy was just as deep into his book, whichever one he had chosen, as she seemed to be. Though he seemed to be writing a lot of notes down. For a moment, Syrah wondered if she should also be taking notes. But instead decided that she would rather just retain this information on her own. She was never very good at taking notes from a book, she was much better at taking notes when a teacher was talking. Notes from books by her always ended up being direct copies. And when she read them back to herself later she never understood the context and therefore they never seem to be useful.

"I've found some information on stances during dueling. I never knew that was an thing, let alone as important as this book is making it. Have you found anything useful?" She asked, hoping he had also found something interesting to share.

Zachary didn't respond. But he seemed pretty deep into his textbook, scribbling notes down on some paper. So instead she went back to her page on stances. The first one they book described was the neutral stance, which seemed pretty self descriptive. The book simply stated it was a normal stance that held no defensive or aggressive behavior. It did not aid or interfere with the casting of spells or the receiving of spells. Syrah thought of this like the stance one would take if they did not know anything of this before they began a duel. Sort of like what she might have done if she hadn't read this before her first duel.

The second stance was the aggressive stance which helped the spell power of the attacks made. Although Syrah did not understand how a way of standing could aid it damage during a fight, she listened to the book anyway. If it was in the Hogwarts library it must be well trusted. The book did mention that this stance left the dueller more vulnerable to incoming attacks. So Syrah would definitely have to use caution if she decided to be aggressive. She didn't want to take too much and get beaten too quickly.

The final type of stance Syrah read about was the defensive stance. This seemed somewhat self explanatory as well and appeared to be the opposite of the aggressive stance. It basically was a way of standing that made it harder for spells to hit, and if they did they may be slightly weakened. For some reason Syrah found herself more drawn to this stance, at least while she was still a beginner dueller. And certainly before she knew too many usable spells.

In case Zachary was still listening even though he seemed in his own world, Syrah quickly mentioned the stances to him. At least he could write them down to look up later.

The pair stayed, silent, in the library for quite a while. Syrah was mostly studying stances and things related to that since she had never heard of them before. She learned about + or plus stances that were basically an amped up version of themselves. There was the Agressive+ stance which was basically a more aggressive aggressive stance as well as a Defensive+ stance which, of course was a more defense defensive stance. It seemed pretty simple, but Syrah would definitely have to practice this hands on if she wanted to fully understand. Her next stop in herher duel research would have to take her to the dueling room to practice.

She looked up at her partner to see how he was doing. He must not be a very good team player, seeing as he had not said a word in a very long time, but his notes, at least, had grown significantly on his paper, so he was doing something.

As she looked at him she got a glance of the window behind him. It was dark outside! Not quite full night, she could still see some blue in the sky. But it was a deep blue and that meant it was time for dinner. Right on schedule, too, her stomach rumbled and she frowned.

"Hey, Zachary, it's getting late and I'm obviously hungry! I think I figured out a good amount of stuff today so I'm pretty satisfied. Thank you for helping me!" She was, actually, grateful for the boy's help before he got all silent. "I can give you a copy of some notes tomorrow if you want. If you found anything interesting I'd like to see yours too! Maybe we can meet up tomorrow!" She exclaimed, hopeful. She really did want his notes.

"Anyway, I'll see you later then! And don't forget that we'll need to duel soon!" With that, Syrah got up from the table, gathered her things and headed down to the dining hall to grab a bite to eat.
