No one had asked Robyn to work so much. She was doing it to herself. There were assistant librarians, the house elves, to take some of the work load but she refused. She was beginning to create work that didn't even exist until she forced it to so she could stay within the walls she oh so desired to live in. To fold herself up into the pages of her favorite stories and let her dreams be consumed by them. That is, if she even dreamt at all. She was beginning to spend most of her days and nights within the library. Her work would consume her, and Artemis would be as active as ever soaring over the shelves as there were no students that she had to be cautious of. If it weren't for the moonlight dancing in through the windows, it could be considered daytime. As she worked through the night she would find herself slowly drifting, fading away on top of various tomes. As a kid she would put the books of classes she had tests for under her pillow to try and absorb the knowledge as she slept. Now, there were no tests to be worried about or essay to write. All she had to do was show up and do her job, and she was showing up... but never leaving.

Often she would come to collect dust. Arms curled around a particularly hefty book to be used as a pillow. Her hair, a mess that refused to be contained and fanned out on the desk. A soft presence of quiet encapsulated the librarian. Something that was usually associated with the type any way. This seemed to be different, a moment of calm snagged to her usual anxious heart and darting eyes. Looking for the next thing, trying to control her environment. In this moment she had completely succumbed to her body's needs of sleep. Which wasn't really smart in an unlocked library, as anyone could come and approach her. Or worse, hurt the books as she rested innocently. Artemis' gentle trills could be heard echoing through the walls. The soundtrack of a guardian of a sleeping woman, trying her best to live up to the expectations she set for herself.

*Tap tap tap*

Caradoc's wand would tick against the wood of Finley's desk. If she woke up, she would find him sitting on a chair across from her. If not, he'd simply repeat the process until his patience ran dry, and he would simply drop a hefty book next to her head. Regardless, he'd be found on a chair, waiting for her attention. His wand, held like one would hold a pen, gently resting on his upper knee. The Head of Hufflepuff was wearing his usual brown suit. Any student or colleague who would pay attention to someone's wardrobe would recognise this as him being on official duty. Despite her perhaps abrupt awakening, Caradoc would smile at her as he gave her time to come to her senses.

"Here in Hogwarts you can find the strangest things during day or night." He began to talk calmly, his voice echoing in the empty room. Something was scratching behind him. Short taps across the wooden boards, moving away from them. "However, finding a sleeping librarian in the middle of the night is a first." A hand would reach out per his introduction. "Caradoc Browne, Head of Hufflepuff. I don't believe we've properly met." A soft and playful smirk would rest on his face as he looked the young woman up and down. His bright blue eyes reflecting the moonlight as he measured her character. The tapping scratches would continue behind him until eventually the sound would come closer to the side. If Finley were to look, she'd find herself locking eyes with another owl. One that was slowly walking through the room. Seemingly inspecting something. "And Miss Hastings of course. Forgive the intrusion."

The unusual duo seemed to exchange an unspoken language. A nod from him and a tilt of the head from her. They had reached an understanding. They would almost seem like a pair of detectives on a mission. "Are you feeling alright, miss Finley?" Caradoc would ask as he slipped his wand back in its holster that was previously hidden from view under his suit. "I would not advise leaving yourself so open at night. I do believe we have warned you of the recent events within this school?"

Being Startled Awake
@Caradoc Browne
At first the gentle tapping entered her dreams. A hazy door with a visitor outside of it. There were no other walls in this dream, no ceiling. Just a rounded wooden door amidst a cloudy grey fog of existence. It was gentle, a polite question to enter her consciousness. Though this door did not come with a peep hole. Even if she tried to look around it, something would stop her. Her hand wrapped around the knob of the door, a deep breath taken, then a slow open-SLAM.

Robyn's head jolted up, gasping in fear as her hand went to grab her wand from inside her cardigan. Her other hand rushed to shove her hair that had inconveniently fallen in front of her eyes, skewing her vision of the man in front of her. He was familiar. Someone she had seen in passing at the table in the Great Hall but never spoken to. A steady hand rested on the inside of her cardigan, wrapped around the hilt of her wand. She had made a mistake falling asleep, and it was a mistake she wasn't exactly ready to pay for. Senses were slowly clicking back on, vision was already working on taking in her surroundings. Touch held a vice grip on her wand. Hearing was next, clicking to life as he spoke. There was a vague scratching noise but she assumed that to be Artemis somewhere.

As he offered his hand in greeting, she slowly unwrapped her hand from her wand and gave him a gentle handshake. "Robyn Finley, librarian. Though, you've already figured that out. I try not to make a habit of it. Generally produces quite a sore neck to work with the next day." Her neck craned to see what Artemis was up to with all the scratching noises and instead found one that was not hers. "Oh. That's not mine. But, lovely to meet your companion. As mine is now... wherever she may be." There was a large library for Artemis to get lost in, especially with no students to avoid. A sharp whistle summoned Artemis, although it took a few moments for her to get there. The small eastern screech owl ended up landing squarely on her shoulder, peering at Caradoc with the piercing gaze of a huntress. "This is Artemis."

Robyn missed the interaction between Caradoc and his owl as she gently moved Artemis from her shoulder to a perch that rested behind the desk for her. A small blush spread across the unnatural ginger's cheeks as he asked a question of concern for her, just from this one incident. 'Bad impression." The thought was quickly shaken from her head as he followed up the concern with the hags that seemed to roam the school grounds. "Ah, feel free to call me Robyn. But, yes. I'm feeling quite alright. I just don't know when to quit sometimes here. I'm terribly aware of the situation I've put myself in. The students have me pulling more books about hags than I ever thought would be warranted. Some of these waitlists are quite long." Her gaze shifted to the stacks of paperwork keeping track of the students trying to be prepared. "I've even had a student suspect I was one." She chuckled lightly, quickly cut off by a somber sigh. "What brings you into the library so late at night Mr. Browne?" Her dull and tired eyes returned to his. It's not like the doors were left wide open at this time, there must've been a reason for his late night visit besides just trying to find her sleeping on the job.

Aha, the book did the trick. Perhaps he ought to have checked if she were dead before trying any of that. Luckily that had not been necessary, besides the girl's owl was far too relaxed around their companion's sleeping body. Pets could tell people a lot of things if they wanted to. Caradoc's found the eyes of his own partner in crime. Sadly, Miss Hastings was getting very old. He knew her time was slowly coming near. Not willing to think further on that note, he diverted his attention back to the librarian and her owl. The Head of Hufflepuff gave the bird a respectful nod as he smiled.

Barely awake and the girl was already rattling off about her encounters with students, and Nora said he was a chatterbox. Eventually his colleague reach a question. His eyes briefly locked with hers as he thought of a reply. She was younger than he had expected. He had seen her age on paper of course, but it only struck him now how young that actually was. Caradoc silently wondered what the girl had seen or learned throughout her years. She had her good looks, so he imagined she must have always found her ways to information should she know how to use that advantage. Yet she did not seem like the manipulative sort. As far as he knew of course.

"Patrols. We've tightened our schedules this year to answer the dangers we've encountered last year." He swallowed as he briefly recalled the most recent fight. "We managed to get rid of a coven that had been hiding deep inside the castle over the summer." He added as a quick note, as if it had been a trivial matter. His gaze studied the pile of books on Robyn's desk. "Dividing your time and work is a valuable skill." A smirk began to play on his lips. "Seems like that could use a bit of work still." He nodded to her desk and grinned. "And call me Caradoc, or Doc if you prefer."

Trying Her Best
@Caradoc Browne
As the girl could never stop working, even in a conversation about how she should get better at managing her time and work, she started to idly clean up the desk as they talked. Of course she was still polite and made the appropriate amount of glances towards the man that sat across from her. A mental task came up to try and actually get to know the rest of the staff. It would be no use to her when she would eventually come to need help, and no one to turn to. A slight bobbing of her head begun as he spoke about the patrols tightening, that would make sense. Better to catch the dangers early before they got to the students again. It was a wonder how Hogwarts hadn't been shut down yet, but a part of her heart knew through all the danger she would fight for this place to stay open.

There was a brief pause in her working hands at the mention of a coven even within the castle. There was a longer glance this time, searching for some indicator of something on Caradoc's face. Though, even she was unaware of what she was looking for. "I can't imagine what that was like, and I hope you all- and I suppose me now, or anyone, doesn't have to face that again. Terrifying creatures, hags are." She wasn't too well versed on them until recently when she felt it would be a neglect of duties not to know about them. "I thought between when I graduated Hogwarts to now, there would be no danger to worry about. I suppose that wouldn't fit Hogwarts reputation, now would it?" A small giggle couldn't help but escape her lips.

With his comment about her working, her hands completely stopped and drew to her lap. "I don't think many jobs usually have to say something about someone staying too long. Not wanting to leave. Most of my colleagues through my years at working at libraries were always ones to leave as soon as they could. At one job I was quite literally forbidden from picking up hours at some point." Her fingers traced over the spine of the book that was in front of her, a wandering and lost gaze drifted over the stacks in the library. "A library has always felt like home. More so than any place I've actually lived in. As silly as that may be. So, it's a bit harder to leave. It's hard to kick out the students wandering around curfew, because I understand why they want to stay. Even if it's just to finish an assignment."

There was a deep sigh as she turned to look back at him, "My time in a library has never felt like work. Especially when I'm living in the castle currently anyway. It's easy to pop between the two as needed." Sleep deprivation made her into a drunken rambler. Saying things she would never say if she was otherwise well rested. "I suppose maybe a thank you is in order, for checking on this dusty place while I'm not supposed to be here. Even if it is part of your job of patrols." Just because it was asked of someone, required, didn't mean it should go thankless. He was up just as late as she was, though for completely different reasons of obligation. One to their job, the other to themselves.

"Oh don't worry miss Finley. Your reputation will grow on its own in this castle." Caradoc grinned. "Adventure always finds us in here. It's up to us to prove ourselves." The Head of Hufflepuff straightened his back against the chair and sighed. "Danger still lurks the edges of Hogwarts' grounds. There's evil watching us from the forbidden forest..." He fell silent, not having any answers to follow up on that statement that surely would have raised some questions for the young witch. "A home." He continued to try and veer the topic to a more suitable subject. "Is good to have though. In any shape or form it presents itself to us." His hand waved around to the library. It was as good a place as any. He preferred Chuisle's couch with a warm blanket wrapped around them, enjoying the quiet and company. Some found their peace in ancient books and dusty tomes, he found it back at the house.

Then his head cocked and his gaze fixated on her with a confused look on his face. "You live here in the castle?" His eyes looked around the library, trying to recall if there was a separate office with bedroom accommodation for the librarian attached to it or something of a facility that was reserved for faculty members. "What did we offer you? If I may ask?" A part of him feared the poor kid was left to sleep under her desk. Surely she would have mentioned something if that were the case. That would have been ridiculous. Then again, people often were. In the back of his head he could imagine Jensen quirking an eyebrow at his thoughts right now. She would forever haunt his mind with her scolding glare.

The mention of a developing reputation had a single butterfly flitting in her stomach. That's right. She was no longer a faceless student among hundreds anymore. People would notice her, students, the other staff, even her assistants in the library. Students would be looking to her for the map to the knowledge they so eagerly sought after. The other staff would be looking and watching to see if she was a capable person at her job, especially being so young. "I suppose a reputation is inevitable, yes." She anxiously smoothed out her pants that definitely didn't need smoothing, her eyes looking to her Artemis on the perch who was preening herself. Perhaps Robyn needed to do more preening, emotionally, to seem more competent. Though, no one had given her any indicator to be worried.

A curious eyebrow quirked up at the mention of an evil. Were the hags not the only issue? She seemed to stutter and stumble over her next words. With the more Caradoc spoke, the more she was worried about her capabilities not only as a librarian... but as a protector. "Mm, yes a h-home. Not much good if it's threatened by e-evil." She cleared her throat, as if that would rid her of the nervous habit that plagued her since she was a child. "Are there... other evils? That I should be c-concerned about? The students seem to be worried a-as is. So much... defensive research for their age." Defensive books seemed to be flying off the shells as soon as they got on the shelves, especially books about hags that were ever requested.

A small grin couldn't help but make it's way onto her face as she saw him searching for her living quarters, at least that's what she assumed he was looking for with the context. "Not in here. Although, not a bad option. I have place hidden away on the fifth floor. Tucked a-away from everyone. It's a humble abode in definition, bed, desk, closet. No need for a kitchen with the Great Hall." Her gaze lowered to her hands that had gone back to her folded position before regaining eye contact with the Head of House in front of her. "Right near my old house, brings back memories." She spoke as if she hadn't been out of Hogwarts for a mere ten years, but rather like it was a lifetime of memories ago. A faint wisp of an idea in her mind. It felt quite distant now that she had begun her life exploring the world, or various libraries, as an adult.

"Danger has sadly always been a part of this school. I assume you were part of a later generation here then. When I arrived here..." Doc's bright eyes flickered around as if he was seeing the room in a different light. "We were being run by a horrible woman. A fiend that sought to destroy all that Hogwarts held dear. Even removed Dumbledore for a bit back then. What's worse is to think on his death the year after, my second year. There was of course the war in my third, though I played no active part in that." The Head of Hufflepuff turned his attention back to Robyn. "Magic can be beautiful beyond comparison, but it also brings vile acts to the table. With humans like us wielding it, things are bound to go wrong someday. Then again, there's always those that will oppose evil." He smiled and nodded. Yes, he was convinced of that. He knew there would always be a light to fight off the dark.

"Gryffindor? Huh, interesting..." He smirked at the curiosity. "Though it seems you don't make it all the way to the fifth floor before you fade off to dreamtown." He noted to his own amusement. "To be honest, you didn't get far at all..." He scratched his own head as he chuckled. It was good to have a passion for something and very convenient for having your passion become your job. But there were limits when it came to your personal care. If you did not plan in your activities, you'd end up somewhere worse than just asleep on your desk at midnight. Especially with hags out there, and hopefully no longer in here. Caradoc's eyes met Robyn's. His thoughts seemed to dwindle on something, though he did not feel ready to ask. "You need to take care of yourself, kid." A basic plan, but often so hard to accomplish for so many people. Some folks were prone to shove their own well-being aside. "I'd prefer it if you kept your sharp mind in good condition." He smiled again, though there was genuine concern behind his gaze.

Robyn couldn't help but lean slightly forward as Caradoc recounted his days when he attended Hogwarts. The stuff he spoke of was history to her, something they learned about in school. Of course Harry Potter was the person that was focused on, but what was lost was the children like Caradoc who was just in his third year when the war happened. The librarian felt even luckier that she never had to live through it at all. School had already been hard enough for her without a raging war smack in the middle of it. Her head slowly nodded as he spoke of the possibilities of magic, the good and evil it could bring out of people. There were always people that were keen on the darker arts, for what reason she tried not to think about too much. She always tried to chock it up to a morbid curiosity rather than research for something.

"Humans are imperfect e-even without a magic. Add that in and many things can happen, as evident by many... many books that have b-been written." She motioned to the stacks behind her. The stories, especially fiction, with a common theme of magic in the wrong hands was a popular one. "But yes, I attended Hogwarts from 2004 to 2011. I'm currently 27." She knew she was of the younger staff at Hogwarts, and this was definitely too much information that Caradoc probably cared to know.

She couldn't help the small blush that scattered on her cheeks as it seemed that he would put her in a different house than the one she was assigned to as a child. "Ah, yeah. I always thought I belonged in R-Ravenclaw myself but, the hat is never wrong. Both my brother and I were Gryffindor kids. He fits the profile much more than I do. Shows just how diverse the houses can be w-with the students in it." A small shrug, over time she had slowly come to terms with her own form of existing within the brave and bold. "Usually I do make it up there. Today was an anomaly. I p-promise." This was not a part of the reputation that she wanted to build. Especially since Caradoc seemed so concerned for her. Just in this interaction alone she could tell how good of a Head of House he probably was. "I'll manage my time more efficiently from here on out so this doesn't happen again. Which it won't. I'm in as good of condition as ever." She had a light, shy smile on her face. This wasn't the worst first meeting she could've had, but it could've gone better.

Caradoc's face turned into one of faked pain. "That's almost a decade younger!" He exclaimed in surprise. "My, my, now I get to feel old." He winked to make sure she realized he was only joking. There were far older people present in the castle, both alive and dead, and Doc felt way too alive to be acting like his knees were ready to buckle with the next jive. "Nah, I'm not there yet."

He nodded in Robyn's assessment on the houses. "I came to believe that these houses and the... traits that seem to be attributed to them, they can both serve as a starting point as well as an end of a journey." He folded both hands and left them to rest on his lap as he calmly continued. "Some children inside Hufflepuff for example, they start out with a very recognizable feeling for loyalty or a talent for patience, compassion. Sometimes even a defined sense of justice. So you would think they easily fit into the narrative for their intended house. I've come to notice this works great for some, as they indeed start out in a community where they meet their equals and are able to grow and build on top of these traits, thereby learning to take other paths. No one is tethered to their house for life the way I see it." He cleared his throat as he sat up straight.

"Then there are the others. The children that come knocking on my door, claiming they do not belong. They are in some way or form, correct. They feel alone, in this strange environment and forced into a house that is described in a way they feel is either the opposite of what they wanted or is simply something they are not familiar with. Sometimes both. The point I'm trying to make though, is that these kids are thrown on a path as well. A path of self discovery. They like to think that by not having these defined traits, they are set for failure. But tell me, how can someone be loyal, without being brave? How can someone be ambitious, without working hard? Or have a sense of justice without having the wits to back them up? These traits aren't dots we mark on a sheet of paper. They are intertwined lines that would reveal a road you've travelled when the time comes to look back to everything." His eyes flickered back to Robyn as he sighed whilst smiling. "I apologize, I got stuck in my own train of thought there for a second."

Doc's eyes continued to scan the young adult to see if she was alright. He had not been convinced in the slightest. Eventually his hand would point towards the librarian. "I have a spare room back in Hogsmeade." He paused as he was thinking of how Nora would react to what he was about to suggest to, basically, a stranger. "It was designed as a desk room for my daughter when she stays over for the holidays, but it sees no use whatsoever." Cassanora was far more pressing on efficiency than her father. She had insisted on keeping all her stuff in the same room, so there was little need for constant running between the two rooms at her disposal. "There's no need for rent, but food is for yourself to arrange. How about that?"

It was hard to deny it to himself. Doc saw in Robyn a future image of his own daughter. As he would want her to stay safe and taken care off, he could only hope she met people that would offer the same he could right now. Sometimes the young just needed someone to give them a little nudge or a helping hand to help them settle in. He knew they could be capable of a great many things if given the time and space to grow into their roles. Though he hoped he had not been oversharing in his views, or perhaps she had already made up her mind that he really was an old blabbering man wasting his time patrols the empty hallways of an ancient castle.
