Of Squids, Tents... (and Doppelgangers?)
Opeila had taken this Sunday afternoon for herself. To think of other things, get her mind clear of things that she had thought and worried about for weeks now and honestly, the Slytherin was exhausted. Too much fear, too much worrying. Opeila had gotten involved with the strange events at school a lot, too much if she thought about it now. IT was somehow almost surprising that she survived this first year in the magical world.@Zykeal Lane21st June, 3.30 pm
The first year had never thought of herself as a troublemaker before, but here at Hogwarts, she totally was. Professor Jensen would most likely agree with that. Opeila had helped to organize a secret blossom ball that was then attacked by mosps and organized a Victory Party at 1 am a month later. Yes, she would certainly be her own downfall one day.
But not today. This was her relaxing day, her break day. Opeila had decided to pay the library a visit and do what she wanted to do for months now. Research the giant squid, she had talked to every week multiple times.
The first year found the water creature section quite quickly and went through the first shelf.
What a weird year that was.
She was glad that she could at least three additional weeks for summer camp. A month with her family afterwards seemed doable.

Through the section of shelves that were riddled with various books on different wand lore, he browsed accordingly in search of the topics that were upon his mind that day. The scuffling of books the next row of shelves over was heard and he peeked through an exposed layer of books towards the isle over. Zykeals heart stopped for a moment when he thought he recognized the girl, it took a moment of those golden hues scrutinizing the girl before he deduced it wasn't the girl that he thought it was. Instead, he noted that she seemed to be more of the Slytherin that he had met just a few days before, the one who had thrown the little get together in the classroom. It wasn't a bad little party either, he enjoyed himself, even if it got a little complicated at some points in the evening.
Deciding it would be rude to just try to avoid the girl, he decided to speak up through the open books of the shelves, "Hey, Opelia right?" he questioned, speaking up a little to make his voice travel through to the aisle next to him. A smile masked played across his features, wondering if he'd startle her as she was obviously concentrated on finding a book to her liking. Unfortunately, he didn't think she could hear him, so he decided to head off onto the other side of the shelves and confront her directly. Crossing over to her section, he walked slowly just to make sure she was the one he thought she was, after all, there seemed to be some weird look-a-likes wandering the halls lately.
Once he got closer, he spoke up once more, "Oy', Opelia ya?" was said, the hint of his Irish accent playing out like a good Ballyboy does. Having not found the book of his desire yet, he looked over towards the section of books that she was looking at and noted that she seemed to be interested in magical creatures. This was interesting, not many seemed to be into that area of the magical world and it piqued his interest, "Whatcha lookin' for?" he questioned once he stopped, settling a few feet away from her, making sure not to startle her if her concentration was deep in thought at the moment. Although she resembled Ivy, she seemed very different and this allowed him to treat the girl differently.

Opeila was focused on the shelf and soon got distracted from what she was actually looking for. Kelpies. Since she had heard that the monster of loch ness was a Kelpie, she had found the creatures terribly fascinating. It made her wonder- Had she ever seen a Kelpie? They could change their shape, so who knew? Maybe she had.
She winced when she heard a voice. Someone said her name. No, not her name. The wrong version that quite many people just seemed to remember.
The Slytherin looked up, searching for the person who called her. A few seconds later he walked up to her, around a bookshelf."Close one. Opeila. Not Opelia. You are Zyk, right?", Opeila asked smiling. She remembered the boy to be one of her guests at the get together. When he asked her what she was looking for, she looked at the book she was holding.
"Originally I was looking for the giant squid. I spend a lot of time at the lake, so I thought it could be interesting to read some facts about it. But apparently I am easy to distract." She closed the book and held it up for him to see the cover. "That one is about Kelpies. Honestly, they are amazing. Did you know that the monster of loch ness is the biggest known Kelpie and just prefers to show itself as a serpent? I think I just love water creatures in general, they are amazing!"
Opeila put the book back intl the shelf. "What are you looking for?"

Keeping himself at distance from the girl, he still couldn't really feel that comfortable to the girl when she so resembled his previous crush, it was just a little awkward. When she finally spoke up though, correcting his pronunciation of her name, his cheeks turned a shade of pink that he didn't normally like to reveal, "Ah, sorry love'," he said, a hand coming up to scratch the side of his head, "Opeila, got it," he nodded to her, "Zyk it is," he continued, reassuring her of his name when she asked for confirmation.
When the girl continued on to what she was researching at the time, he smiled and nodded along at the appropriate times to follow the conversation, "Nice," he murmured between her sentences. That's when she shoved the cover of a book in front of his face and he gave it a quick glance before peeking his head from outside the front of it to peer over towards the girl with those golden irises, "Kelpies hu-," he tried to get a word out but this girl was probably one of the most talkative people he'd met so far in the school. This was something he actually didn't mind, the fact that they were clearly from different houses didn't seem to bother her into starting a conversation, so he appreciated the effort she was making and listened to her.
Once more though, he'd raise his hand to his head and scratch the side of it when she questioned his knowledge on the species, "Ah, no, don't know much about them, to be honest," he offered a slight shrug as he lowered his hand to his side, a half-smile was given as his ignorance of the subject showed clearly, "Seems awesome though," he added, hoping that she wouldn't feel that he didn't want to hear about the topic. When she then continued to ask what he' was looking for, an energetic smile brightened his facial expression, and his white teeth shown proudly. The hand that had previously dropped to his side would fetch the aspen wood wand that was tucked into his waistband and he brought it up to show her, "Wands," he said bluntly.
Like a drummer, as he always has done, he let the wand start to twirl though his fingers and rotate through his hand with easy, "They're brilliant aren't they?" he offered emphatically, "I mean, there are so many properties that go into them," he couldn't help his excitement from rushing out as he went into a little detail on his area of interest, "The wood, the core, the length," a breath had to be taken, "and even the flexibility," he finished, "they all play a part in how your wand selects you," he nodded happily, "and I want to know why of all people," he looked down passionately at his ivory-colored wand, "that my beautiful wand chose me," he finished. Golden hues flicking back up to see if the girl wasn't trying to run away from his enthusiasm.

Although Opeila was in a rather talkative mood, she was not blind. She noticed that the boy seemed to feel rather uncomfortable. Opeila wondered, why. They had never gone further then introducing themselves. Or rather getting introduced to the other by others. So what was the reason for him to feel so uncomfortable?
Opeila could have went on and on about the topic for some more minutes, but the way he nodded and didn't really seem to know what to say about the water creatures made quite clear that he didn't exactly share her interest.
That didn't matter to her. It made her kind of curious what it was that he was interested in.
Wands. Opeila tilted her head a little, when he took his wand and rotated it in his hand like a drumstick. The Slytherin had been in a muggle orchestra for some years, she had seen the drummers let their drumsticks twirl through their fingers about a billion times.
And then Zyk started to explain his curiosity about the topic, named the different features of wands that made them all unique. Opeila bit her lip and looked at his wand. "What is yours made of?", she asked him. She took her own wand out. "34,2 cm ash wood and snallygaster heartstring.", she said. "I've always found that it is rather long, but never knew why. Well, my spells barely ever fail with this one, so I guess it fits me well." She examined it.

There was indeed an edge of awkwardness that surrounded him at the time, it wasn't the girls' fault though, he was just still flustered when it came to talking to the various girls that seemed to have similar features within the school. Trying not to let it affect him further though, he'd correct himself while he was talking in posture and try to relax his tense frame a little further. A hint of a smile brushed across him once more then, after he went on his spew of information of wands, she became inquisitive and asked what his own wand was made of. This led him to stop the movement of the wand within his fingers, settling it into the palm of his hand, letting it be outstretched to show the ivory-colored aspen wood wand, "Aspen wood," he said proudly, then continued with of normal voice, ".. and phoenix feather," finding the core to be not as interesting in the wood itself.
Opeila went on to explain the properties of her own wand and he nodded along with her as she spoke, he was slightly excited, wanting to make some inputs but waiting for the right time for him to speak up about the subject. She went on about the length, which he did think it was a big long, but the wand chooses the wizard and Zykeal firmly believed such, "Ash wood! That's awesome," he said, in truth, he already knew that the moment she brought it out, his study of wands and wand lore was extensive and he could already recognize the wood before she even told him. Zyk leaned in a little, not enough to make her uncomfortable, but obvious enough that he wanted a closer look at the wand she owned, "You're the original owner right?" he questioned, "Ash wood wands are said not to work as hand downs or gifted," he looked up to Opeila and smiled, "You have to be chosen by this one," he said, straightening himself and nodding his approval of such a wand typing.
Zykeal was one to respect those that held wands with wood which bound to their owners, it made them special, unique, "I think it's a great wand," he confirmed. Nodding once more to her as his wand hand twitched, subconsciously wanting to resume the twirling it desperately desired. It wasn't his intention to hoard the conversation though and distract her from her current desires of knowledge, so he turned his head and looked at the section of books that she was standing in front of, "Say, I heard the giant squid in the lake will tickle the feet of students sometimes," he mentioned before turning his head back to smile at her, "Is that really true?" he questioned, then added, "I really would like to make friends with it," he said foolishly, a little rosy appearance being brought to his cheeks at the silly comment he made.

Of Squids, Tents... (and Doppelgangers?)
Opeila noticed his change of tone when he said that his wand was made of aspen wood. "Is there anything special about aspen wood?", she asked curiously. Opeila had never given her wand a lot of a thought really, it was a tool to her, one that worked fairly well so far. She had of course known, that wands were different, unique, but she had seen it in very... well... muggle like way so far. Like if one used a certain bulb in a lamp, it would shine brighter than others. She had thought of it that way. But hearing more about wand characteristics was fascinating.
He asked her if she was the original owner of her wand. Opeila nodded. "Yes, I bought it in Diagon Alley last summer." Zykeal went on about how ash wood wands could not be passed on or used as a gift, as they stayed loyal to their first owner. It had to choose it's owner. Opeila looked at her wand, suddenly a little proud. This wand chose her. Would stay with her and no one else. It belonged to her alone.
She nodded, when Zykeal said that he thought it was a great wand. "It is."
It surprised her, when Zykeal changed the topic back to water creatures and asked her about the giant squid. If it tickled students feet sometimes. "I've also heard that he likes to kill students who practice skipping stones on the surface.", she said and chuckled at the memory. Alright, it had not exactly tried to kill her, but rose a tentacle out of the water. It had scared her then. "But I know for fact that he likes sandwiches, so by all means, try and make friends. Didn't work out for me, I am quite sure he hates me."

A smile graced his features for a moment after she asked about his aspen wood wand, but, he didn't want to give to much away with his obsessions, those thoughts were guarded to him, "I don't know, just a thing I guess," he mentioned, hoping she wouldn't prod any further into the subject. Thankfully he decided to switch the subject and it made sense that this girl decided to talk more about the giant squid and her ventures with it herself. It just made sense to him, to sidetrack her with the subjects that she was obviously into. After all, she was in the library where no one would want to be and researching the topics of aquatic creatures.
Zykeal continued to smile but it was all a faux as his thoughts were driven in other areas of life. Unfortunately, his schemes in life were taking a taxing toll upon his emotions. This wasn't the time or place for him to be making new friends and it had just occurred to him that, this person, especially, with her looks and similarities towards the one crush he had concocted a plan to woo was just not an ethical thing for him to do. She seemed sweet, this girl, he'd actually wished he'd had met her instead of the Gryffindor girl he had met that resembled her, to begin with. She was interesting. This brought pain to him though and he needed to get out of this situation.
"Yeah, they're great," he blabbered, not even knowing what he was saying anymore. Golden irises flickered down the row of shelves and then he shifted his head to look behind him, finding the closest exit, "I've gotta go, cya," he said abruptly. Quickly he'd turn, heading in the opposite direction of her even though it wasn't in the direction of the exit, he'd find that later on, Zykeal just needed to get out of the library and away from anyone who made him feel this way. It was an unfortunate side effect of the affection he had once felt towards someone so similar in looks.
Zyk leaves the thread.
