Magical Me pv: Lucille Williams

The Abandoned Toilets weren’t so abandoned these days, so Wyatt went against everything he stood for and walked to the library. He hated reading, hated writing, hated learning anything that didn’t seem incredibly interesting, but quiet? Wyatt loved the quiet, something the library supplied. Hoping it was at least semi-empty, he opened the doors and walked to the shelves to find a book to fake read.

Wow, he thought as he saw the spine of Magical Me. From what he’d heard, Gilderoy Lockhart was a self-absorbed prick who went crazy after entering the chamber of secrets with Harry Potter. Magical Me was his autobiography about the great things he’d done (written before he went mad), and it turned out, much of those stories had been stolen from other witches and wizards. It was ridiculous that his book was ever in the Hogwarts library. He must’ve hidden it there himself when he was a professor.

Lockhart’s stories reminded Wyatt of the muggle John Smith’s books, a British soldier who lived from the late 1500s to the early 1600s and assisted in founding Jamestown, a colony in America. The man wrote books about maidens and adventures that were incredibly fabricated. There were three stories whose storylines relied on a beautiful woman begging for the man’s life alone, oh, the drama. The most famous of them being the story of Pocahontas, which became a movie much later. A beautiful woman belonging to the Powhatan tribe saves the British soldier and they live happily ever after, though Pocahontas never saved Smith, and she married a different John in real life.

He took the book down and blew on it. About 25 years of dust went flying off so fast it seemed they wanted to leave the wretched book. Wyatt coughed, only to be shushed by the librarian. He rolled his eyes but hoped she didn’t notice. Librarians are creepy.

He noticed as another student entered the library. It was so close to being empty, too! Is there no such thing as peace in this giant bloody school! He started reading, or “reading” Lockhart’s book, hoping the library-goer would think him busy and not try to start a conversation.

Lucille had been taking her daily walk around the Library when she started to hum one of her favorite songs."Don't..stop me now..."The young Ravenclaw started. How could she help herself? As she hummed the rest of the melody Lucille still continued her search for a book. When she stumbled across the 'classics' area of the library she found a small book entitled ' Tales Of Beedle The Bard' with a cute and colorful cover Lucille came to the conclusion this was some kind of wizarding children's book."I suppose there was no 'Little Red Riding Hood' for wizards."Lucille muttered to herself.Though right as she walked over to an area with seating (and finished the song's chorus) Lucille noticed the glittering cover a book in the corner of her eye.Quite curious as to what the book was she left 'Tales Of Beetle The Bard' on a table to further investigate.
While walking towards this glittering cover she noticed another student was actually holding the book."Hey uhm...what's that book about anyway?"Lucille asked still being quite ignorant as to who the student was.As she waited for the boy to answer she finally used her Ravenclaw brain to identify the student as Wyatt. The same Wyatt from the train, the same Wyatt from the halls and yes, now her was right here holding this fancy book for some reason.

A familiar voice met his ears. He hadn’t talked to her since the train ride, but he knew who the voice belonged to. It was Lucille. The girl who wore the Beatles tee, that was likely who’d been humming that Queen song a few seconds ago. He should’ve picked a more boring-looking book, but he had to pick the bright blue, glittery mess. He could’ve thought ahead, brought Advanced Potion Making, but he didn’t, and now, he was being asked questions. He held back a sigh.

“Ravenclaw alumnus, Gilderoy Lockhart’s autobiography. It's a myriad of adventure stories, stolen from other wizards. He’s a fraud. I wonder why his book’s even here, I bet he put it here himself, 28 years ago when he was a professor.” He wondered if the Ravenclaw even knew who he was. “Have you heard of him?”

He snapped the book shut with his left hand and a cloud of dust exploded from the thing. Has no-one touched this book until right now? “Bloody hell,” Wyatt said before he turned his head and coughed into his right arm.

Looking over the cover, he noticed it was a signed copy. Signed in bright purple ink. Wyatt couldn’t help but roll his eyes, this man was the most obnoxious little thing. He remembered the story he'd heard about how Severus Snape beat Lockhart in that duel, and how that made him quite proud to be a Slytherin. It must’ve been a hilarious sight.

He held the book in his left hand, he’d be throwing this thing in the fireplace once he gets back to the common room.

Lucille scrunched up her nose in disgust when she heard this fraud called 'Lockhart' was a Ravenclaw."He does sound like quite the snob."She admitted.Though really it wasn't that hard to admit since it was a fact."I think I'm happy to say I've never heard of him before, though I do wonder what happened to 'em now."Lucille added. As she saw the giant cloud of dust emit from the book she sneezed so loud that a loud SHUUUUSHH could be heard from other students in the library.Quite embarrassed Lucille looks back down at her feet, trying to change the subject."So..uhm..How did that guy even become a professor? Sounds like a total air-head to me."Lucille asked trying to sound confident. Completely out of habit, Lucille looked around the Library only to see some Gryffindor students visibly snickering behind Wyatt. "How odd.."Lucille thought, quite confused.Lucille tried to ignore the students but they continued to make silly faces at the two of them.Or maybe just at Wyatt? Lucille hated being so clueless. Why did everything seem to go right past her? Finally she couldn't take it anymore."H-hey! What's your problem?"Lucille called to the students.Though it seemed they couldn't care less.Lucille couldn't help but get even more upset now.

"So... Uhm... How did that guy even become a professor? Sounds like a total air-head to me."

“I seriously doubt they’d hire a professor that daft if he wasn’t their only option. No-one wanted the Defense Against the Dark Arts post, it was thought to be cursed. The last guy who had the title had the Dark Lord on the back of his head. Who would want the job after that?” He thought for a moment, “Well besides Snape.”

Every night back home for a month since he’d first heard of magic and the wizarding world, Wyatt’s mother told him stories about her time at Hogwarts. She and Harry Potter were in the same year when she was at Hogwarts, though she didn’t care for him at the time. She was a Slytherin, so she practically wasn’t allowed to like Harry Potter, unless you wanted Malfoy’s goons after you, and you didn’t.

He realized that Lucille, being raised in the muggle world wouldn’t know who Snape was. “Severus Snape was the potions professor at the time.” He loved it when his mother told him the stories, and he was glad he was able to share the stories with someone else.

Then, Lucille piped up, "H-hey! What's your problem?" For a moment, Wyatt was really confused, but then he looked to his right and saw some Gryffindors. Some bloody Gryffindors. The worst kinds of human beings, if you can even call them that. “Don’t give them the time of day, Lucille. Gryffindors aren’t quite worth it.”

Lucille gave Wyatt a small smile when she heard him describe how ridiculously stupid that wizard Gildroy Lockhart was. While thinking about it more she realized how dangerous Hogwarts must have been when that famous Harry Potter wizard was coming.I don't think I would have been eager to fill that position, or even come to school for that matter."She said, replying to his little question,
"Who would want the job after that?”
.Lucille had heard him mention something about a Severus Snape before she had seen those pesky Gryfindors laughing away behind Wyatt."Who was Severus Snape anyway?"Lucille asked airily as she tried to keep her focus away from the Gryffindors and back on her conversation with Wyatt, but of course now, it was to hard to ignore. After Lucille asked what their problem was, Wyatt did the actually wise option by choosing to ignore them. What are they gossiping about anyway?"Lucille asked aloud while still having her gaze fixed on the students. With a visible look of disgust in her eyes the young Ravenclaw looked back at Wyatt."How can you stand them just..just.. standing there?"Lucille asked him partly in awe."Honestly, I can barely stand some awkward silence and you seem to just ignore these idiots just gawking at you?For gods's sake how do you even do it?"

“I don't think I would have been eager to fill that position, or even come to school for that matter."
Wyatt understood. The nineties were a strange time for Hogwarts.

“Who was Severus Snape anyway?"

“He taught at Hogwarts for a while. Died in the battle at Hogwarts. Brilliant man, scary though.”

His mom always looked up to Snape. Since she was a Slytherin, she qualified for being one of his favorites, even though she always said she was terrible at potions. Her cauldron exploded in her face a dozen times every year.

Though Wyatt appreciated Lucille’s attempt at ignoring the Gryffindors, he could see her struggling to hold up the façade that she didn’t care. Wyatt knew it wouldn’t be long until she let the mask down.

“What are they gossiping about anyway?"

Wyatt shrugged, but he was sure it was the rumour that had been going around recently. The rumor about him being a descendent of a couple o’ Death Eaters, and about how he was following in their footsteps. That one. Even before the rumour, he heard kids, usually Gryffindors, sniggering behind his back. This wasn’t anything new. He ignored it, as he used to do in his muggle school. Then, Lucille exploded.

"How can you stand them just… just... standing there? Honestly, I can barely stand some awkward silence and you seem to just ignore these idiots just gawking at you? For god’s sake, how do you even do it?"

Wyatt had a secret weapon. One he carried with him at all times. He was invincible if you tried to hurt him with words, which was why a lot of the Gryffindor bullies hurt him using physical tactics. Spells and fists.

Wyatt’s secret weapon was apathy.

He shortly replied, “I don’t care,” before looking back down at his book. Page after page mesmerized him. It was all fake. All lies. Lockhart was truly an idiot. It was very funny to Wyatt, the idea that Lockhart put his own book on the shelves.

Lucille agreed with Wyatt."Snape sounds like quite the hero, though how could he be considered scary?"Lucille asked. Many students regarded this wizard as a hero, just as Wyatt had said, but now she hears of him being scary? What a confusing man. Lucille continued her focus back onto Wyatt.Though now, the jeers of the Gryffindors were getting louder in her mind. Not knowing if the Gryffindors were still there, or if it was just her mind playing tricks on her, Lucille continued her focus back onto Wyatt and his words. When Lucille heard Wyatt's response, she couldn't help but feel surprised."I think I can honestly say that I envy you Wyatt Starkey."Lucille replied in a sincere yet playful tone."If I could just, not be bothered like that, maybe things would be different..Sorry if that sounds weird by the way..."Lucille added with an awkward smile.Maybe by the end of this if Lucille was lucky, she could come out with a new friend. It's not like she had a lot anyway. So how could there be a problem with adding just one more?Lucille looked down at her feet.It had been an odd habit she had since she could ever remember. When ever the girl became lost in thought, Lucille found it best to look down to continue her thinking. When Lucille felt there was nothing left to think about she looked back up and moved her curly hair off to the side out of habit. With the school year almost coming to an end, Lucille felt she could use a friend who could help her keep her emotions in check, sometimes the young eagle thought it was a wonder she wasn't in Gryffindor. Now more then ever she appreciated the Sorting Hat's choice of putting her in the the noble house of Ravenclaw.

"Snape sounds like quite the hero, though how could he be considered scary?"

“Really, I’ve got no idea.” His mom had really emphasized the word “scary,” though, so he took her word for it. “Though, people aren’t just two-dimensional figures, are they? Why can't heroes can be feared?”

There was a short pause.

"I think I can honestly say that I envy you, Wyatt Starkey." Her tone was definitely playful, but Wyatt could sense a tinge of sincerity in her words.

"If I could just, not be bothered like that, maybe things would be different…
Sorry if that sounds weird by the way..."

“Oh, it does.” It sounded very weird. No-one had ever said anything like that to him before, and he was sure it wasn’t just that Lucille was the only person who was brave enough to say it aloud. It was the strangest thing to hear. Wyatt envied anyone who passed him in the corridor, and he wouldn’t wish his life on anyone but his greatest enemy. He couldn’t blame Lucille, though. It wasn’t like she knew his whole life story, and he certainly wasn’t going to be the one to tell her.

“Though I do appreciate it… I think.”

When Wyatt heard the Gryffindors get louder, he couldn’t help but ask the librarian a question that had been bugging him.

“So, Lucille sneezes and you shush her with your dying breath, but the Golden Gryffindors snicker at a volume that challenges mandrakes and it’s just fine?”

The librarian pursed her lips, but then walked over to the two Gryffindors and escorted them out of the library as Wyatt rolled his eyes.

“Sorry,” he said to Lucille. If he’d thought about it, he wouldn’t be sure what he was apologizing for. He'd likely say it was either for bringing her into his argument, or because the kids were snickering (even though it was obviously targeted towards Wyatt), but it was really just out of habit.

Lucille's face expressed confusion, but in her head she could only become more interested on the topic of Severus Snape."I suppose your right.."Lucille added after Wyatt answered one of her many questions."No matter how bad someone seems I guess everyone is simply two-dimensional.That goes for heroes too I guess."Lucille looked back up at Wyatt after an awkward pause between the two.Lucille truly hated when silence got in between the flow of an interesting conversion. It's not like she didn't need more help on being awkward.
Upon hearing Wyatt's response to her words Lucille's cheeks flushed as red as a ripe strawberry."Why do I even try to speak?"She asked herself silently.Lucille looked at the ground embarrassed, ad she took a small step back."Maybe continuing wouldn't be the best idea. The young eagle thought silently. Then Wyatt spoke again.Lucille's head perked up again when she looked at him with innocent surprise."Uhm..well.. thanks.. for appreciating it I mean.."As Lucille spoke her amber eyes glistened like the sun at dawn."I didn't completely fail yet."She thought to herself optimistically. For a second Lucille thought she saw Wyatt flinch while hearing the Gryffindors chatting even louder, as he walked over to the librarian the young Ravenclaw stood dumbfounded. When Wyatt returned a few minutes later, Lucille noticed the Librarian escorting the Gryffindors out of the library.Lucille looked at him with a small grin on her face."Thanks again Wyatt. You really have nothing to be sorry for."She said to him in her optimistic tone once again."I'm sure it would have taken an eternity for me to actually say something..so I guess I owe you one.."Lucille added as her grin changed into her signature awkward smile.
