Everything was quiet, the evening was winding down. Uncle Sean and Auntie Kat sat relaxed on the loveseat by the fire place and her mother sat on her own across from then in a cozy, over stuffed chair. Illowy was already dressed in her nightgown, hair carefully combed of tangles and still wet from her bath before bed; though the girl was trying to prolong her bedtime as long as possible as she laid on the rug, practicing her coloring. A young child, barely the age of five.

It was meant to be a calm weekend away in the countryside, staying in a cottage by the lake. Kyle, in typical little boy fashion, opted to stay home at a sleepover with his friend. Illowy, however, never liked missing a weekend holiday. However, not all things go as planned.

The quiet evening was shattered as the front door was splintered away. A pack of wolve, greater then any wolf the girl could have ever imagined from her storybooks, ran rampant through the cottage. Her aunt and uncle, well trained Aurors, scattered in search of their wands, her mother was quick to scoop the child into her arms, screaming at her to hide.

It was the first time she'd ever seen her mother afraid.

The cottage was filled with nothing but snarls, adults yelling, lights from wands flashing as the girl helplessly tried to get away from the chaos of the monsters attacking her family, too young to understand why. Helplessly, she found herself out in the open, her family screaming her name all around her, demanding she move. Eyes blurry, the girl rushed for the outline of her aunt, a snarl pounded her ear drum and as she turned, she saw the largest wolf lunge towards her, towards them, taking her down in the process...

When she opened her eyes, she was cold. Her body ached and she wheezed for breath as a weight lifted itself off her. No longer was she in the warm cabin, no longer a small child, but her current age, she found herself on the cold, hard forest floor. Turning over, looming over her was a different wolf. Fur much lighter then the first, it's muzzle caked and dripping rubies as it watched her, circled her... Kyle.

"Kyky, please stop..." she heard herself whimper out, watching him as he flinched, faking a moment to lunge again, "Ky, its me! Magpie, remember?" it didn't even seem to spark a memory in the creature's eyes as it snarled, and desperation rose in her chest, "Kyle, please!" she cried before the wolf shift and lunged for her thoat-
Illowy flinched harshly as she woke; cold sweat on her brow, her heart was pounding and she panted as though she'd just ran a marathon at full sprint. Pale, nervous eyes searched around, finding herself back in the train compartment of the Hogwart's Express where she'd initially fallen asleep. Across from her was Kyle, watching her. How long had she'd been asleep? The girl pulled the sleeves of her dark sweater over her hands and rubbed her face.

Ever since the Ball, sleep hadn't been her friend. It had riddled her mind with guilt and nightmares of her experience. To only make it worse were the events of that summer, and sleep had been even more rare since then. The snake could hardly remember when she'd had a proper night of sleep.

The rest of the summer went by in a blur. He began to work out more as a way to release the excess energy and anger he had building up, and when he wasn’t running or boxing he was practicing with his bludger bat. He wasted his first year getting into trouble, getting into fights, and blowing off his studies and wasting his free time. This year would be different. He was going to become a beater for the Gryffindor team no matter what, he would do everything he could to master charms, jinxes and hexes, and he would prove to himself and others that he was a force to be reckoned with. It’s what Duke would have wanted

He climbed onto the train alongside his cousin, he hadn’t seen her since she went back to her moms and wasn’t sure wether or not she would want anything to do with him. To his surprise she waved him over and insisted they share a cabin, the two of them even pooled their money to get some treats. As the train ride went on Illowy fell asleep and Kyle couldn’t help but notice her face twitch as she dreamed. He could tell whatever was going on in her mind was bothering her what ever it was. He leaned forward and grabbed her knee and gave it a slight shake. She startled awake suddenly and Kyle leaned back and crossed his arms. ”Still on the train, it’s alright...you good?”

Illowy had spent the remainder of the summer since that visit feeling constantly torn. While part of her felt like she ought to at least try to be with her cousin as much as he would let her, she also felt he might need the time on his own. She feared making him feel over crowded and cornered, even if it was being done with the best intentions.

This year, her mother sent of her off to board the express alone, assuring Illowy that she was more then capable of getting herself on the train on her own; which, granted, was true... though it didn't mean any less that she might've liked the small send off since she wouldn't be home again until Christmas. After her the incident, her aunt hadn't exactly had the choice not to tell her mother about what had happened, especially given the girl's state when she was returned; and ever since, her mother had been growingly more distant on a personal level. Though she was always happy to help Illowy when practicing spells or working on summer reading, her mother never stayed around long enough to ever touch on anything personal.

All the same, Illowy would be fine. After all, she was perfectly capably of looking after herself; she was more then use to being on her own anyway.

When she'd seen Kyle on the platform, she was more then excited to see this hadn't hindered him returning to school. She was quick to wave him over, insisting they ride together. At least for a moment, everything fell back into a bit of normality as they had treats from the trolley and talked about the coming year. When conversation had gone quiet, she hardly even realized when she'd dozed to sleep.

Awake once more now, she nodded softly as Kyle reassured her they were still on the train and asked if she was okay, "Yeah... Yeah, 'm fine. Jus'... a really weird dream..." the girl combed her fingers through her hair and rubbed her neck, cramped a bit from falling asleep against the wall of the compartment, "S'what I get, I guess, sleepin' after eatin' half my weight in sweets." the girl forced a small chuckle.

If there was anything Kyle could relate to it was bad dreams. Ever since he was infected more often than not his dreams were plagued by the side of him that had fur. He was sure that there was little he could say to really make anything better so he just opted for moving past it so she wouldn’t linger on whatever it was that has gotta her worked up. ”better pull yourself together Magpie. If ya aren’t careful I’m gonna be the one making you look bad this year.” he taps his temple and and offers his usual cocky grin ”I got some lofty plans this year. Not gonna be a kid in this place who Don’t know me”

He grabs a pumpkin Pastry and unwraps it whole shifting his gaze outside to watch the world whiz past the window. Despite how eager he was to get back to school and get to work on on his spells so he was ready to duel and make sure he was up to snuff for Quidditch he couldn’t help but be anxious. He wasted his previous year and knew that he had a lot of ground to make up if he wanted to actually be something.

The snake rose a brow at her cousin, a smirk tugging at her lips as he proposed his challenge. She was sure that he was using her competitive nature to take her mind away from the nightmare; and it was working like a charm. If there was one thing the girl couldn’t resist, it was a challenge; especially if it was extended by her childhood opponent, “Don’t get too cocky on me, Kyky. While you’ve been off t’become a big ol’ badass with your boxing, I’ve already started working on third year’s charms and transfiguration work.” She grinned. Honestly, Illowy was the only child she could think of that would spend the majority of her summer holiday studying. Aside from visiting her family and one trip to summer camp solely with the intent of sneaking into the library, she’d spent no real time to just enjoy her break.

Perhaps it was partially knowing excelling at charms would please her mother, but her studies learning about Kyle’s condition had been leading her on a bread crumb trail through transfiguration and dropped her into a hole of Knowledge.

She eyed him as he snatched up a pumpkin pastry, picking up a marshmallow biscuit for herself, “You’ll be playing catch up before you even know what hit you.” She teased before bitting into her treat. The girl was determined this year to get into dueling club, mastering her blasted flying class and pushing ahead in her classes as far as humanly possible.

Kyle knee he didn’t have any hope of beating Illowy when it came to grades. She was a nerd, and as such was a lot more clever than he was when it came to studies and learning things. But he didn’t need to get better marks than her to outshine her. Imagine if he was at the top of the Rankings in defense as a beater for Gryffindor, had a near perfect record in dueling, and maybe got away with causing some “moderate” trouble. At that point he would look leagues better than his cousin and her Marks and teachers pet nonsense.

Kyle would lean back and relax, crossing one leg over the other as he rested an arm along the back of his seat and he lazily glanced out the window. ”see, that’s what you just don’t get Magpie. You’ve been playing catch-up since we were kids. You might have better marks and know more books. But I’m gonna be somebody. Nerds are a dime a dozen, but not everyone becomes someone great” he looks back towards Illowy and gives he a half hearted shrug ”but who knows, maybe when they write stories about me they might mention my loser cousin who did a lot of homework”

Illowy rolled her eye, nibbling at her pastry as he went on insisting how he was going to be so great. Sure, she may never be the athletic type, though she was fairly certain if she put him out on the dance floor, she could whip him for sure; but when it came to things like Qudditch... flying wasn't her thing. Especially knowing there a ball specifically there trying to knock you off, much less the other players.

However, half the students in the school, in any magical school, dreamed of being great Quidditch players; and not everyone would be so, "I'm not a nerd, I'm driven." she corrected, "And I would bet if someone ever had even an inkling to write about you, it would be whilst referencing the greatest duelest in the world." she grinned, before adding proudly, "That would be me. Great witches and wizards are always well rounded." the girl chuckled a bit before licking a stray bit of marshmallow fluff off her thumb, "I'm sure you could fly circles around me any day, Kyky, but I think we both know I could blast you off that broom without batting an eye."

It was always this way with them it seem, ever since they were small. They always planned to figure out how to one up each other, though never in the same field. They would never beat out each other in their own respective strengths. They both knew it; but it didn't make the rivalry any less fun.

Kyle chuckled and shook his head as his cousin spoke. It felt so good to be able to talk and joke around with her. With anyone really. This was the first time he had smiled and laughed since Du-...his laughter sort of died off as the memories of his summer break rushed back. Kyle rubbed his face and his mouth grew dry and he could almost taste the coppery taste of blood, a taste that he deeply wished he didnt know the taste of.

With a sigh Kyle moved his hand and rubbed the back of his neck as he reached for a soda and took a long drag from the can until it was empty. He knew that Illowy was going to worry if he seemed bothered or upset so he feigned a yawn and rose to his feet and groaned as he did a big stretch. Alright, I need to make my way to the WC. Ill be back, unless I bump into someone more interesting along the way." he offered Illowy a sly wink and slipped out of where they were sitting and he began to wander down the corridor, glancing at others laughing or reading or talking or sleeping. He wondered how many of them had the kinds of regrets that he had, how many people woke up in cold sweats because of the things they have done or seen. Kyle slapped himself once and shook his head. he needed to get out of the head space. He was going to move forward, do something more than wallow and hide.

He stepped into the WC and stared at himself in the mirror. The scar down his cheek from where he absentmindedly picked at his face during his first transformation, the little scar on his lip from a rock he caught to the mouth when he was younger, the bags under his eyes from lack of sleep and the messy wild hair that always managed to get into his eyes. had it really only been a year? he felt so much older, and thought he looked as old as he felt. With a nod of determination he turned on the sink and splashed some water on his face and slicked his hair back before he stepped back out into the hall and began to wander back towards his seat.

Millie was returning to Hogwarts after only a week of not being there. She begged her mother to fly back to England to take her away from Hogwarts so she could hang out with her friends for the week or so, and then put her back on the train. It was nice to see her mom, but she was always on edge nowadays.

However she was not really sure where to sit. She didn't know any of her friends that were returning the same time she was, since most of them had gone back earlier. But this was a great time to make brand new friends, right?
It wasn't as though she didn't want to make new friends, it was just not her forte.

Her mother bid her goodbye, and let Millie get on the loud, bright, scarlet train. This year was going to be different, even if it was just a little bit different from her first. This time, she would be able to help first years around, and just hang out with her friends. But the year hadn't started yet.

"Where to sit..." She mumbled, looking around in the compartments. It all felt like a lost hope, until she came across a compartment with a boy, and a girl called Illowy.

Cautiously, she opened the door and peered inside. "Hey, Illowy!" She chirped. "Mind if I join you guys?" She asked, not moving from her spot.

Illowy glanced back at him as the laughter seemed to die out. Sweet normality faded as she watched the gears seem to turn in his mind, and it didn't take a very long stretch of imagination to figure what he was thinking about. Even as he tried to cover it up with a yawn and stretch before excusing himself for a moment, "Please, you'll never find someone more interesting then me." she gave a small smirk, watching as he left the compartment.

Once he was out of sight, the girl seemed to melt a bit into her seat, setting aside the remains of her pastry before pulling her sleeves over her hands and rubbing her face before turning her gaze to the window. This whole past year had consisted of nothing but fear for her; from bullies, from the events of the Blossom ball, and from herself. Now, since the events of summer, she feared for her cousin. She still got pain in her ribs occasionally, though they were nearly healed now, and while her bruises and superficial cuts and scrapes from being tossed around like a ragdoll had faded, one or two left scars in their wake. Not to mention endless, sleepless nights.

She could only imagine how Kyle felt in the aftermath of this summer....

Her mind was brought back to the present as someone called her name, and she turned to see Euphrasia standing in the doorway of the compartment. She blushed a bit, recalling the night the Gryffindor had found her practically having a mental breakdown in the corridor before curfew. Truthfully, she was still a bit mortified from that night, "Yeah, sure." she nodded, moving her violin case from the seat beside her and re-situating it to sit upright on the floor between her legs, "Kyle should be back here in a bit..."
