It had been a thoroughly unusual week, each new experience had been exciting, but the emotional journey involved in leaving home had been a rollercoaster. For one thing, Ariadne was missing her mother and sisters, only her father had come to London with her to visit the wizard’s bank and to buy her school things at Diagon Alley. Only he had accompanied her to the train station.

He stood with her now, a long lean limbed man who had started to hunch, his once black hair peppered with grey and thinning by the day. Both were well attired, Dominic Somersby dressed far more lavishly than Ariadne believed that he could afford to, even her school robes, uniform dress and the pretty black leather brogues on her feet seemed a cut above what might be considered a reasonable expense.

The platform hadn’t yet become busy with arriving families, and for now, there were as many pigeons as people milling around. The place would be full of life soon enough but for the moment, she could still hear her father clearly over the hissing steam of the Hogwarts Express as the boilers started to warm up.

It was fair to say that Ari felt a bit of a fraud, standing there beside her Father, saying goodbye with her back toward the great red steam engine and her smart trunk at her side. Not for the first time, Ariadne wondered why it mattered so much to him that they make the right impression in front of the other good families.

It wasn’t as if she didn’t want to go to Hogwarts. On the contrary, Ariadne had been dreaming of getting away to somewhere else forever since they had moved to the dark stone tower house in the moody woodland and since she turned ten she had wished for little else but an opportunity to go. She was excited!

And yet, at that moment there was hesitation and despite whatever he might wish, Ariadne threw her arms around her father and buried her face in his shirt, holding onto him as tightly as she could.

“What if none of them like me, Da?” she murmured, her sweet lilting voice coloured by the worry, “- What if none of the girls I know is there? Or I don’t get into the House? Wh-”

He stopped her spiral with a touch, pushing her away enough to tip her chin up so that he could look down into her eyes, his recently clipped beard styled immaculately for the first time in two years. “Hush now, little bird,” he quietened her with a reassuring smile and crouched to stand face to face with his eldest daughter, his rich Irish brogue continuing, “- you’re from a good family, you’re a good girl and I have faith you will make us proud, my sweet girl.”

Ariadne gazed into his steady eyes and nodded, swallowing back any protest she might have been preparing and throwing her arms about the man again, this time her face against his “Okay, Da..” she squeaked as she held him there, “I’ll do it. You’ll see.”

After a long pause the hug ended, awkward and stiff her father rose, kissing her on the forehead as he did and then barely restrained himself from tousling her near perfectly presented blonde hair. “Good Girl, Now get on before you miss it, I’ll be here.”

She nodded, wiping a tear from her eyes and squeezed her father’s hand tightly in both of hers before she turned to take the trunk. Before she could, her father had reached past her and easily lifted the heavy luggage into the carriage door for her and Ariadne followed it aboard before turning to wave. “I love you, Da” she mumbled.
Once she had stowed the luggage Ariadne had shuffled her way past other new students and down the outer passage of the first few carriages, passing by already occupied boxes with whooping older boys, gaggles of older girls and many a healthy mix of the two, before coming to a carriage that was quieter for now and finding a box that was empty of passengers.

She looked up and down the hall and saw no one to direct her otherwise and so Ariadne decided that place was as good as any, moving to take a seat. Through the window she saw the tall figure of her father moving along the outside of the train, peering in to find her and once their eyes had met she waved once again and he returned the gesture before moving to stand near a signpost within view of her window and awaited the departure of the train, his face unreadable, torn between pride, joy and loss at sending his eldest daughter away.

Ariadne sighed and shrugged her new robe from her shoulders, revealing her grey school cardigan and skirt beneath. She looked about for a moment to study the box before hanging her robe from a row of pegs she found on the wall by the carriage door. With that, Ari moved to take a seat, sliding along to a spot by the window, facing forward (or so she hoped - it was hard to tell with wizard transportation, in her experience). Down on the seat by her side between, her and the wall, she set down a plain leather bag that contained her wand, some coins and a few other things for the journey.

She sat alone there for a few minutes listening to the creaking carriage and the hubbub of others students up and down the train before she started to fidget, boredom striking, as it so often does. Eventually, she reached down and thought about retrieving the new wand from the bag, she hadn’t had a chance to look at it since the greying man in the shop had given it to her.

Haley had waited so long for this and now it was finally time for her to hold the letter with the things she needed to start school. "Mooooom, it is here! We have to go," she shouted from the front door into the living room. "Take it easy Miss Rose." Laughed her mother. Haley couldn't wait, years she had waited for her letter to Hogwarts and now the beginning of a new section was only a few days away.

Haley almost ran through Diagon Alley to get as much impressions as she could, she stopped at all of them and looked briefly through the shop windows until she discovered something new and paid full attention to it. All day long she grinned over both ears and her body was filled with happiness.

The last days until the departure from Kings Cross flew by. Haley couldn't sleep the night before but you couldn't tell how tired she was. She was excited through and through. There she stood now, on the platform with her parents. They had slipped through the wall and in front of her stood the magnificent Hogwarts Express. She couldn't believe it and couldn't get out of the jam. Her parents smiled at each other for a moment, they were happy how much Haley was absorbed in this situation.

They said goodbye with a long hug. "I love you and I will miss you!" Haley now said a little sadly. "Little Rose, don't be sad, a whole new adventure is waiting for you," her father said encouragingly. Her mother also winked at her and said, "Write us an owl as soon as you get settled in."

She got on the train and turned around briefly once more and smiled at her parents. So, here I am now, Haley thought and took a few deep breaths. She felt the nervousness rise in her body. She made her way through the train to find a free seat or box. On the way she passed many students, all of whom must have been above her in years. Deepened in her surroundings and all the impressions she had, she had to realize that all boxes were already occupied. After a few steps, however, she came to a box where only a girl, which was looking on her wand, sat. She was the first one she saw who could also be a girl from the first year, Haley thought.

She paused briefly, then knocked quietly on the door, stuck her head inside and asked if the other seats were still free. The girl nodded briefly and Haley sat in the window seat opposite her, looked out the window and looked for her parents again. They staggered one last time, then Haley turned to her counterpart and smiled at her, "Hi, I'm Haley.

Scarlet had not been back to the city since she moved down south with her family six years ago, she had forgotten how busy it was, everyone moved as if they were late for wherever it was they were going. Both her parents were accompanying her to Kings Cross Station, and as much as she had wanted her uncle to be there to wave her off too, she was happy in the fact that he had given her a silver necklace to make up for his absence, the gleaming wolf pendent visible over her burgundy jumper.

Stood on platform nine and three-quarters, Scarlet felt a rush of excitement - she was finally going to Hogwarts, she thought of the new school books packed neatly in her trunk and the wand in her bag, she couldn't wait to get started.

After saying her goodbyes to her parents on the platform she rushed to find an empty carriage, and taking the seat by the window, waved goodbye to them until the train had moved far enough for them to escape her view. Slouching back into the seat and looking around the empty carriage she decided now might be the best time to meet some other first years, her father had told her the journey from London would be long and they would likely arrive sometime this evening.

Grabbing her bag from the adjacent seat, she made her way out of the compartment and upon sliding open the doors she could hear the murmurs of different conversations and the movement of students still looking through compartments. Scanning the various groups of students as she passed through the carriage, she saw many appeared to be in years above her own, and so passed through the doors at the end to an almost identical looking carriage. Looking out the window she saw that they had left the main city to areas where greenary was becoming more common.

These compartments seemed busier than those of the carriage she had just came from, she continued however down the narrow corridor until she came to, what she first though was an empty compartment. Taking a quick glance inside, Scarlet saw two girls sat opposite each other by the window, the blonde girl she saw, was wearing a plain grey uniform, 'no house colours, so they must be first years!' Scarlet waited unitl what seemed like a pause in their conversation and gave a small knock on the glass before sliding open the door,

"Hi, any chance that those seats are free?," Scarlet said gesturing to the empty seats. Once one of the girls indicated that she was welcome to sit, Scarlet, sliding the door closed behind her sat beside the blonde girl, "I'm Scarlet, I'll be starting first year too," she said assuming that the red-haired girl was also a new student.
