Alexa stood staring in amazement at the gleaming red and black engine of the Hogwarts Express. She had just passed through the passage to reach Platform 9 3/4 (she had walked through a brick wall!), and with her parents behind her, had arrived before the train.

She glanced back at her parents, who were looking around in wonder. Her letter had come this summer as a complete surprise, considering the Mackenzie family was not a magical one. At first, no one had known whether or not to believe it… Until a wizard had appeared at their door to explain.

Alexa shook her head, her auburn hair flying in its ponytail in the breeze on the platform. Brushing her bangs from her face, she remembered the wizard who had visited them, incongruously dressed in pinstripe suit pants, and a red and white striped sailors shirt. He had been quite a shock, to say the least. More shocking was his performance of magic inside their own home! They had been convinced.

With her parents, Alexa had made the trip to Diagon Alley and purchased her necessary supplies for her first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Everything had passed in a blur, as though in a dream, and had left her standing staring at the great engine before her, shivering with nerves. What if she didn't fit in? What if it was all actually a mistake, and she wasn't magical?

She looked around at the various families urging their children onto the train, helping them with trunks, saying their goodbyes. Everyone looked like they were meant to be there. But Alexa felt out of place.

Her parents helped her load her trunk full of its school supplies onto the train, and after quick hugs goodbye, and a few tears in farewell, she had climbed back aboard the train in search of somewhere to sit… She found an empty compartment, and tucked herself into the corner, staring out the window, still shocked that all of this was really happening.

Meredith did not care were her father was or why he even came because she never wanted to see him again. What he said to her annoyed her so much that just wanted to get to this magic school and forget everything that had happen in that last past hour when he said for her to try to get into Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff. " Well what if I don't want to be in Ravenclaw or stupid Hufflepuff? What if I wanted to be in Slytherin or Gryffindor? It is not up him to decide what house I should be in, I want to be in Slytherin just to annoy him!" Meredith thought rather annoyed at her father. She got on to the " Hogwarts Express" and looked around for a compartment to sit in alone and saw that there were none but she had seen a girl alone in a compartment and thought that she could ask if she could sit. " Hello, Can I sit everywhere else is full? My name is Meredith and I want to be in Slytherin to annoy my father because he was in Ravenclaw." She finished the last sentence with a mischievous grin on her face hoping that this girl would let her join her for the ride all the way to this school that was magic and called "Hogwarts"

Clay sucked in her bottom lip. She kind of didn't want to be here, now that she thought of it. It had been all fun and games before, when she'd been just searching for school supplies and building up her excitement for the new school year, but now she was actually on her way to Hogwarts, and it was absolutely terrifying.

But the young girl held her own. She'd gotten to Platform 9 ¾ with the help of her cousin, leaving behind their grandmother because she was a muggle...and sick. It saddens Clay, making her feel like she was abandoning the elderly woman but there was no turning back now, she was already on the train.

She had wasted no time dilly-dallying, hopping on the express and giving her luggage, if one flimsy suitcase could even be called that, to the porter before making her way into the depths of the red train. It was like beginning a grand adventure with a mix of excitement and fear in all the right yet wrong places.

Clay didn't known anyone here besides her cousin, who had disappeared long before she had. He was an arrogant Slytherin, which a girl had said...whatever that meant. All she knew was that he wanted to be with his people. Even though she hadn't even been sorted yet he still shut her out like always. Whatever, she'd make her own friends.

She soon found a compartment with two girls. They appeared nice enough, although one of them seemed especially rowdy. "Hey, mind if I join? I'm Clay." She put on her best smile, which didn't feel very genuine.

"And this mortality hit me like a hammer and left me reeling."

Alexa looked up in surprise at the girl who basically barged into the compartment. Her eyes wide, she found herself staring at the other girl who chattered immediately about things Alexa didn't understand. Ravenclaw? Slytherin? What were those?

She began to panic as the new girl, Meredith, looked at her, waiting to see if she could come in. Alexa could only nod mutely and gesture at the seat across from her. This new girl had way more energy than Alexa was used to, and she certainly wasn't shy, the way Alexa was. As the other girl spoke, Alexa looked down at her hands, interlacing her fingers in different patterns nervously.

When there was another knock on the compartment door, Alexa looked up again almost with relief, not knowing how to deal with Meredith, but also afraid that someone equally un-shy would come in and overload her senses. But the second girl seemed different. More calm, somehow, and Alexa found herself smiling tentatively at the new girl, nodding her head in answer to the girls question.

Alexa watched the girls as they took their seats, and smiled again slightly. Maybe she could make friends with these girls… Though she barely knew what to say. Looking at them both, one after the other, she said, with her soft Scottish burr, "Hi. I'm Alexa." Then, remembering her manners, she hurried on to say, "It's nice to meet you both."

Meredith was confused when this girl gave her a odd look when she said stuff about Ravenclaw, Slytherin, and Hufflepuff and then realized that she was probably a muggle-born who had no clue on what the four houses at Hogwarts are. She decided to try to explain to the girl that she now knew was named " Alexa" she started with," Sorry, I was just kind of annoyed with my father. You must be a muggle-born to not know what Slytherin and the other houses are." Meredith thought that she sounded very stupid trying to explain what the houses are when the Headmaster would explain everything to the whole school even though Meredith already knew the rules about not going into the Forest and no Hogsmeade until third year and all of those other rules about stuff like no magic in the Corridors and stuff like that and so on and so on. " Never mind, the headmaster will explain everything to the whole school." Meredith said rather calmly witch was a little bit surprising even to her since she was just being really angry and annoying. Meredith turned to this girl who had just entered the compartment and said holding out her hand not expecting her to shake it, " Hi, I am Meredith, pure-blood and I want to be in Slytherin to annoy my annoying father."

Clay almost laughed. Meredith's bluntness was kind of funny but she merely forced a smile on her face and shook the girl's hand. It felt weird because she normally didn't shake people's hands but she guessed that this would be the norm living in a school full of wizards, young and old.

"That's...interesting," she offered, feeling a bit awkward. Clay didn't know what else to say. She didn't care that much about which house she'd get into, mostly because she didn't know why it mattered. She barely understood how she fitted into this 'new' world, one full of spells, potions, and magical beasts.

Clay turned to Alexa. She seemed to be the original occupant of the room. She also seemed to be less obnoxious than Meredith, but maybe everyone was too affected by nerves to act normal. If normal even exists anymore, she thought.

"Thanks for the seat." She wanted to add something about her cousin leaving her to fend for herself but she didn't want to seem like a whiney baby on her first day. It was bad enough that barely knew anything about magic; she couldn't go around look like a lost and vulnerable weakling. Who knew how bad the bullies were here?

A curious thought suddenly crossed her mind, making her shift her attention back to Meredith. "I don't know much, but I've heard some pretty bad things about Slytherin, so bad it explains why my cousin is in it. Do you actually want to be in there or is it only to bother you dad?" She wanted to hear more about the Houses but she pretended to only be mildly interested.

"And this mortality hit me like a hammer and left me reeling."

All Meredith heard was Pretty bad…. Slytherin.....cousin and her mind went straight to What!! Slytherin is the best house that there is in the whole terrible school." "Well personally I like Slytherin and all of its traits good and bad! And well I also want to annoy my father because he had been hiding magic from all me of my life and how my mother died...… Witch is not important." She said quickly hoping that they would not of heard her say anything about her mother's death or anything really. She kind of tried to be ignored but she knew that would never ever happen in her whole entire life or ever even when she was alone.

"Sorry if I have been kind of annoying or obnoxious or really bothering just tell me and I can leave." She said knowing that they probably do not want her here or anywhere near them and Meredith knew that she was really annoying and that she can be super loud and obnoxious but she tries really hard to fit in around other people, but can not be normal and that is probably why she is going to the stupid school for weird people and they claim to be magical.

Alexa's brow furrowed in confusion and slight trepidation when Meredith said, "Muggle-born." She didn't know what a Muggle was, but she wasn't at all sure it sounded like a good thing. She vaguely remembered the wizard that visited their home mentioning Muggles… In fact, was that how he initially addressed her parents? Is that what made her "Muggle-born?" Were her parents Muggles?

When Meredith mentioned that the Headmaster would explain everything, Alexa perked up. She knew about the Headmaster. After all, he had written her her letter! She hoped he was a very nice man.

Alexa smiled and nodded at Clay in response to her thanks. She was beginning to like the girl. Meredith continued on talking, but Alexa didn't mind that either, now that the initial shock of meeting someone so exuberant was over.

She watched the two very carefully as they interacted, wondered if everyone knew about the strange names. Houses? She desperately wanted to ask questions, but thought it would make her look stupid for not knowing. When Clay mentioned Slytherin being bad, she saw Meredith look affronted, before the girl explained. Then she went on to say how she could leave if they wanted her to, and Alexa was surprised. She spoke up. "No, you don't need to leave Meredith." She smiled slightly, and then feeling braver, addressed Clay. "What are these… Houses you talk about? I'm sorry, apparently I am… Muggle-born?" She glanced at Meredith for clarification.

Cassie just boarded the train and some of the compartment already occupied with students, old and new. Cassie walks further until they found a compartment consist of three girls. One redhead, one have curly hair and the other one blonde hair. By the looks of the way the blonde spoke, scared the other two girls.

The blonde hair girl speak bluntly about she want to be sorted into Slytherin and what the reason behind it. She also stated her blood status. "Really? Do you think it is a wise idea to stated your blood status?"Cassie stood in front of the compartment door that is open wearing black long robe with hoodie and look at the other three girls.

"I am Cassandra. Cassandra Ironwoods. Cassie for short"Cassie told the group of three. "Give the poor girls a break and breathe, lass"Added Cassie after seeing the confusion on the two other girls faces when the blonde one explain about the houses. The way Cassie spoke shows elegancy, full of mannerism, regal and sophisticated.

"Father was a Slytherin and Mother was a Ravenclaw. I also a pure-blood but I do not mention it to someone I just met"Cassie said to the the blonde girl. While Cassie still standing, the curly hair girl said about she heard pretty bad things she know about Slytherin and ask the blonde girl whether if the blonde girl really want to sorted into the House of Serpent or just to annoyed her father.

The blonde girl saying that she liked Slytherin with all of its good and bad traits also she wants to annoy her father. Telling about hiding magic from all her life and how her mother died. When the blonde girl stated this, Cassie remain neutral albeit the info shocked them a bit. Cassie did not want to pressed on. Then the blonde girl realize how she could been kind of annoying or obnoxious or bothering the other two. She said a short apologize to the other two and about to leave.

"Just do not go yet if you both do not mind"Cassie said to the curly and redhead girl. "I think I might get sorted into Slytherin as well. Us Slyths should stick together, do not you agree?"Cassie asks the blonde girl. "Mind if I sit with you guys?"Added Cassie looking at the three other girls in the compartment.

"Um," she muttered as she listened to Meredith's monologue. She glanced over at the other girl but she noticed how the redhead seemed almost equally confused as her. Perhaps she was really a Muggle-Born like Clay, which made her feel more at ease. But Clay knew more about the school than Alexa. Maybe she could tell the girl about—

Then another girl entered the compartment. Clay's brows shot up into the air; there was something about her that radiated regality, or at least high importantance, like she was someone who was given high respect just because she was born. But the girl, who introduced herself as Cassandra—or Cassie, for short—didn't seem like a snob. She only seemed slightly bothered by the other girl. Well, Clay couldn't blame her, but honestly didn't bother her all, she was quite entertaining.

"You don't have to go. I think we're just a bit confused because we're new to everything," she said, referring to Alexa and herself. Maybe I should sit next to her, we're both in the same boat, being clueless and all, but Clay didn't move, instead crossing her legs. She was trying to get comfortable. She rarely rode trains nor did she ever have conservations with real witches on a day basis, so it was all really exciting. But she managed to keep her cool, looking mostly bored.

"Since you two know more about it than us, do you think you could tell us what to expect?" They both mentioned that they were going to be sorted, as in they hadn't been already, which marked them as first year student like her, but they still both seemed to know a great deal more than her, even though her own cousin was a third year Slytherin. She wondered if she'd get into that House, being related to him and all. She had a strange feeling that she wasn't, though. Then she added, for Cassie's benefit, "I'm Clay McGlinchy, professional Muggle-Born."

"And this mortality hit me like a hammer and left me reeling."
