Hey!
It was third year, and people said it was one of the most exciting years.
Okay, nobody said that. But Rosie wanted to believe it. It helped her make every year better than the last. She'd probably repeat the process each year. Fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh. First year in presumably muggle college. First year doing taxes. Stuff like that. It kept the optimism strong, even when Rosie had really... Really bad days. And she had quite the few of those. More often than normal, actually. But that's a whole other edgy thread of it's own. Point was, Rosie was chilling. She was still bright as ever, shorter curly hair with the same robe that didn't quite fit her. She was adjusting her
bag strap as she hopped on the stone squares on the floor.
She thought she was alone in the corridors until she turned the corner, squinting slightly. Ah. Brooding posture, short brown hair, and a red Gryffindor scarf to tie the identity all together. Well, actually, there were a lot of broody white brunette boys at Hogwarts, so that statement was actually false. But it looked like a certain someone. Rosie's expression brightened when she realized it was! Max Avery, in the flesh. She didn't wanna assume he got better with the whole METAPHORICAL-DEATH-TO-MUGGLES-BECAUSE-OF-PRESSURE-OF-PARENTS thing, because the only thing he really improved on was not glaring at her like she was a speck of dirt on his shoes when she walked by.
But regardless, Rosie never learned her lesson with approaching him calmly, and skipped right up. "Hey Max!" She called a bit too loudly, before clearing her throat. "How have you been? I didn't get to talk with you over the summer to see how it went. I hope you're well." She just kinda started walking beside him without asking, ya know, as one does.
Besides, even if he wanted to get broody, he didn't scare him anymore. Rosie was a teenager, she was THIRTEEN. Which meant she was a grown adult who doesn't get scared, basically.

Hey!
Max decided fate must be testing his patience to send Rosie Parker into his path while he had a bad head cold. He was all stuffed up, the front of his head ached really bloody bad, and every time he spoke it came out in a nasally, hoarse half-whisper. He was planning to get re-acquainted with the wonderful world of his bed's soft mattress when he heard a voice so loud he half-jumped, his adrenaline soaring along with his anger. Rosie was being her usual peppy self despite all the history between them and it was really getting under his skin.
He stopped walking and turned to her slowly, almost mechanically, to stare through bloodshot, watery eyes courtesy of not being able to sleep at night. The bags underneath them were big enough that he should be going on vacation, and he sniffed a quiet gob of mucous into the back of his throat before speaking.
"I'm not in the mood," he croaked, voice sounding like nails on a chalkboard, "For any of your Hufflepuff preppiness." He wanted to say more but his anger died out as quickly as it had come, the effort it took to speak past his aching lungs making him more tired than anything. At least the sore throat had disappeared, though he assumed it was only because that particular part of sickness had leaked down his trachea straight into his lungs.
Spacing out for a long moment, he had to blink himself rapidly back into the conversation and try as best he could to focus on what was going on. There were probably a ton of spells and potions to cure the common cold, but he was too young to know any of them. The people who did know about them, however...
"Parker, I need your stupid Muggle help." Maybe not the best way to start, but he absolutely loathed asking for help. "You know Muggle medicine. They must have a non-magical way to get rid of the influenza - what is it?" He took a step closer her, a crazy desperate look in his eyes as he seized her by the shoulders. "You have to tell me, leave nothing out." All he needed was a decent night's sleep; he'd do anything, even hang out with Rosie Parker.

Hey!
Oh wow. He really did look like a zombie.
Rosie did her best not to grimace when she caught a full look at his face, and it was successful. The mechanical turn wasn't new, and at this point, it made Rosie laugh. But she saw that, and all traces of amusement on her face went away. She simply took a short breath and let out a sigh, "yikes." She mumbled under her breath, walking over to him. How does someone even manage to get that sick at Hogwarts? Maybe she was flexing because she had never gotten sick at Hogwarts before. Haha, Max. You suck.
The voice made her want to laugh harder. Yikes! It was usually what he said to her, but in a sick way. And it was kinda funny. Rosie took a breath to stabilize herself before she laughed in Max's face. She didn't wanna make him angrier. Maybe he'd cough on her, oh the horror! Maybe a little sneeze.
But then the best thing happened, Max asked for help.
Granted, Rosie didn't appreciate the tight shoulder grab. This was probably the first time he had touched her ever. Did he have to do it while sick? It was kinda gross, and she did want a zoom in on his blood-shot zombie looking eyes. But for a second, she felt pride. He wanted her help. Her MUGGLE help. Rosie thought he hated muggles, but oh! Look at him now! Crawling (figuratively) for help. But she swallowed her pride down, and put on a soft smile. Max needed her help, and she wanted to be friends with him one day, and it was one step at a time!
"First of all--" Rosie slowly took his hands and took them off her shoulders. "Okay." She put her significantly smaller hand, feeling his forehead. Yep. Definitely a fever. She took her hand off and moved his head up so she could see his face, before putting her hands back in her robe pockets. "They've gotta have muggle medicine at the nurse's office." She said, looking at his bloodshot eyes. He needed sleep. "Here." Rosie offered her arm to him. "Hold on to my arm, you look like you're gonna collapse. I'll take you to the nurse. But if you want, we can head to the kitchens, and I can get you some honey or chicken soup. It's sick food!" She grinned.

It was a bit of a shock when Rosie didn't make fun of him or turn him away, since she could've easily done either of those things and he dared say he deserved it. Instead, she removed his hands and he let them fall from her shoulders, his own drawing up in defense when she reached out. Only to touch his forehead, her hand cool and nice-feeling against the heat coming off of him. Ridiculous little Hufflepuff being too kind again when what she ought to do was kick him while he was down - that's probably what he'd do to her.
Despite his misgivings about this whole thing, he had to admit it was kind of nice to give someone else the reigns for a second while he wasn't thinking straight. Too many times when he'd been sick in his own home, he'd bundled himself up and went down to the basement to lay in an exhausted heap on the cold concrete floors. There was no one to complain to without getting in trouble, so he'd made himself scarce so neither of his parents could find him and bring their wrath down on him for dropping the pureblood mask. To Max, being sick meant isolation and eating stale crackers from a forgotten pantry. To Rosie, it appeared to have another meaning entirely.
"Okay," he mumbled, more complacent and docile than he'd ever been perhaps his whole life. He was more familiar with poisons than medicine, so he'd have to take her word for it. Eyeing her arm distastefully, he wondered what people would think to see him walking arm-in-arm with a Muggleborn; would this get back to his father when their relationship had just been repaired? A coughing fit interrupted that line of thinking, and he covered his mouth with the crook of his arm for a long time before he was ready to go. Giving up, he gingerly took her arm with the one he hadn't coughed into.
"Yeah, okay," he said again, already forgetting what he was agreeing to. She had him at her full mercy, yet somehow he didn't think she'd take advantage of him. It couldn't be that he trusted Rosie Parker, could it? He hardly even trusted himself, so the thought of giving over to a tiny Hufflepuff with a big heart was laughable. But here he was. And here she was, having his back despite everything. "Um," he muttered blearily as he started walking whichever way she wanted to go. "Thanks, Parker."

Hey!
Huh. He took her arm.
That was the first initial shock. But regardless, Rosie held onto him so he wouldn't stumble and fall. It wasn't a surprise when Rosie remembered Max didn't like her very much, but he wanted her help, so she was happy to do something to make him feel better. Maybe he'd actually smile her way, but that was if she was lucky.
At home, Rosie's dad had a routine for when she got sick. Less her mom, who out of the picture by the time Rosie was eleven. But he had gotten her step-dad onto the whole train. First, literally throw Rosie into bed, because she wouldn't go willingly. She liked fighting the sickness off, but it never worked, especially when London was cold. Second, Eren Parker's Special Sickness Food; Chicken soup, (which Rosie was growing sick of) tea with honey, an apple, and a package of peanut butter crackers. Maybe it wasn't the healthiest meal, but it did the job right. The only problem was not going to ballet, which Rosie hated. She'd practice at night in her room once her dads fell asleep if she missed a class, trying to ignore the congestion. Leaning down with a stuffy nose did not treat you well.
She lifted her head when she heard Max say thank you, and it made her smile. Rosie shrugged and continued leading him down the corridors. "Don't worry about it, it's no trouble. Maybe you'll be less grumpy after you get some rest." She teased, turning a corner. Rosie paused for a few moments before turning her head a bit. "You can call me Rosie, you know. Parker doesn't really suit me too well as a first name."
She was trying to think of the interaction was progress. Maybe Max could see her as someone who could help him, and more than just someone from a muggle family. The chance was low, but still there.
