But to her dismay, the room she shared with her female housemates was just as stuffy. And just as crowded. The girls were bouncing from bed to bed, gossiping amongst themselves about their day. Sighing, Blaire clutched her book to her chest, turned on her heel, and went back out the way she came.
Blaire felt trapped in here, there wasn’t a place she could call her own. There were always groups of people crowded around in the common room. And girls were always lingering about in the dormitory. She could never get a moment to herself it seemed. Blaire wasn’t used to being surrounded by people constantly. Back home, her mother avoided her like the plague. Her father was never home, and when he was, he stayed locked away in his study. The handful of servants they kept on staff daily didn’t have time to tend to a little girl. Her nanny did what was needed to be done, but for the most part left Blaire to herself. For Blaire, this was almost a culture shock to her.
Not bothering to look at the time, Blaire slipped out of the common room. She wanted some air, and she knew the upper floors at least had better air flow. There weren’t many people lingering about at this hour. She could hear her footfalls echoing in the hallway. The light up here was a bit brighter. Remembering the book that was swinging at her side, she brought it up to her face and opened to her last page. As she read, she flicked her eyes up every so often to make sure she was still walking in the right direction. And, that she wasn’t going to run headfirst into something. Or someone.
She walked absentmindedly with nowhere in particular to go. The water bouncing off against the windows was rhythmic. Her footsteps grew slower. It was almost as if she was in a trance, a flip of the page, another step, her eyes no longer looking up to check her path. Then, out of nowhere, she slammed into something hard. Dropping her book to the floor she raised her hand touching the tender spot on her forehead. Blaire cried out, shaking her head. Finally opening her eyes, she starred back at a fellow student. ”Oh my, I am so sorry. Guess I’m not as good at multitasking as I thought.” Blaire stepped back, trying to smile, and make light of a very awkward situation.
