It hurt, a lot. He had bruised his leg while flinging himself backwards with a spell, and was regretting not paying more attention. But he could block it out. Not with thoughts of bravery, or silent curse words, but fear. Fear, he found, was a useful curse. It made you faster, stronger. It helped you to ignore all your ailments and keep going anyway. And right now, he was scared of a lot of things. He just had to focus on them.

Scared of failing, of death. Scared of who or what lay behind the corner, and scared of who or what lay hidden beneath fragile disguises. The death witches, the professors. You attended the classes of those who were trying to kill you, you learned from your worst enemy. Because they didn't just wantonly destroy. They weeded out the weak.

He was huddled by a suit of armor. Not looking mysterious, or dangerous. Just a little bit sad, and a little bit not quite right. His knees were tucked up under his chin, and spread out just enough for his chin to rest on a hammock of sorts made of the robe's fabric, stretched between his legs. The edges were frayed, and a few patches and tears here and there gave it a rather ratty look. The boy's face was beyond pale. Sallow, greyish skin that looked like it belonged on a corpse, rather than a little boy. Eyes that threatened to close at any moment, heavy lids above and dark shadows below.

His hair had a few leaves in it, and it a good sprinkling of dirt. One hand held the other, long thin fingers tipped with dirty, dully pointed fingernails.

Marissa had just left the last lesson of the day, sighing in relief as the thought of her bed popped into her head. Recently, Mari had been behind with homework, not having the mental or physical energy to do so. But the professors had started to get irritated with her and begun holding her back in classes. So the corridors were empty since the Hufflepuff had left about twenty minutes after everyone else. It was free time at the moment, so going to bed for a small nap was not a bad shout. But, here she was.. walking around randomly.

Her fingers gently grazed on the metal suits of armour as she passed bye each one of them. Marissa hummed to herself as she made her way through the corridor before something catching her eye. More like someone, curled up. She screamed instantly as it scared her, falling onto her bottom after losing her footing. Mari landed not far from the stranger, looking slightly terrified but curious at the same time. The Hufflepuff tried to act casual and sit normally, as if nothing happened. She kept her distance just in case. "A-a-are y-yo-you o-okay?" The boy looked hurt and in pain which made Mari feel guilty for some reason.

Students walked past, he could hear their footsteps, some heavy and sure, some soft and craven, pattering past here and there. He could hear the thumping of hearts, fast and slow. Could smell them. He didn't like it, not much. He wanted to pretend that they didn't exist, that he was the only person there and that he was going to be safe.

Hopes that would never see the light. As hard as he tried to bury himself in denial, the little voice in the back of his head wouldn't let him, kept reminding him of all that he had seen and experienced in the blood soaked halls of hogwarts. A terrifying, horrible place. And not one that he wanted to be in. Maybe he could teach himself magic, somewhere else...

It was then he heard a scream. A jolt of panic shot through his body, and in an instant, he was up. He didn't know what was going on, or at least he didn't see what was happening. But he had a pretty solid idea. Someone had just died. There wouldn't be a mention of it at meal time, no one would act like they had seen anything, but it had happened. Death witches, picking off student after student until only the strongest remained.

When he leaped up and back, he crashed against a suit of armor, sending it tumbling as his wide, terrified eyes started to turn black, pupils expanding outwards. He felt a sharp pain as something hit the back of his head, probably a piece of the armor. It quickly turned to painful throbs, even before he landed on the ground in a jumbled mess, jumped to his feet and heard the shaky tones of someone who was desperately trying to remember how to speak like a human.

He wasn't going to find out who it was, he didn't care. Kaegen ran as fast as he could, small trickle of blood matting the hair on the back of his head.
