As Miles tried his very best to navigate the maze that someone named Hogwarts, he heard someone humming. He thought maybe they could give him some directions, so he started in the direction of the voice. As he got closer though, he noted there weren’t any footsteps to be heard around the area, so the voice didn’t belong to a student humming on their way to the Great Hall. This, of course only made him more eager to find whoever the voices belonged to.

Once he was there, he saw a freaking painting doing it’s laundry. What could he do besides initiate conversation? “Hello! How’re you doing?” With bright eyes and a brighter smile, she turned to face Miles. “Well, hello there! You must be an Ilvermorny student. Welcome!” She had the kindest southern accent, and Miles wondered how she got all the way to Hogwarts. He asked. “I’m a painting, silly! I was made here! One day, I hope to see the real American south... Not this fake one.”

She motioned to the fake farm she was on. Cattle were roaming freely. Miles never thought to ask a painting where it would want to go someday, but he was glad the answer wasn’t something along the lines of “I’d like to live long enough to see one of you trapped in here and we all get to be out in the real world! AHAHAHAHA.” That would be terrifying, and if Miles tried to run away, he’d be lost forever in the halls of Hogwarts.

Her confession made Miles feel sad for her, and he had to fight the urge to steal her painting and run off with it. He wouldn’t be able to hide her anyway, the painting was huge. Some time passed and the two had been chatting the whole time, getting to know each other, and talking about hopes and dreams and such. She was the nicest painting Miles had ever come across. Some of them were straight up mean all the time, and they were paintings. Who hurt you?

“Okay, okay,” said the woman over Miles’s laughter. She’d just told a joke about witches and- oh well, you had to be there. “I never asked you about where you’ve always wanted to go!” Miles had to think about this. He was from New York, which was the greatest city in the world… even though after a while it just gets annoying. But he never really thought about going anywhere else. He was always happy where he was.

Still, while he thought about it, the one place that kept coming back to him was “Paris.” He shrugged. “I don’t have a real reason, I’ve just heard it was pretty.”

“That’s nice,” the painting replied, quite motherly.
This could be a solo of just Miles getting to know a painting in the castle and beginning to understand Hogwarts a little better, but if someone wants to show up and make fun of him for talking to a painting or something, that could be cool too.

Sarah was late for her next class, haven gotten carried away reading in the library and completely losing track of time. It was something which was happening considerably more often than she might like, but she found it hard to put down a good book once she’d started. It was therefore becoming somewhat of a habit for her to turn up to class a few minutes late. “It’s not like it’s making my grades drop,” she reasoned with herself as she cast a quick Tempus and saw that her Transfiguration class had started fifteen minutes prior. “Well, I can’t show up now. There’s fashionably late, and then there’s downright rude,” she said, ironically abhorred at the idea of being rude to a figure of authority as if she hadn’t been doing just that for the better part of her life so far.

She’d just decided to turn back – undeterred by the possibility of being punished for her skipping class – and make her way outside for some fresh air, when he ears zoned in on voices. Ever the curious one, she couldn’t help but turn the next corner to see who else was roaming the corridors. Her eyes landed on a tall brunette who was animatedly discussing something – Paris, perhaps – with a portrait hung on one of the walls.

She could feel a bubble of laughter rising up from her throat, but managed to bite her lip to stop the noise form coming out. It was funny. Seeing the boy stood happily chatting to the cheery looking woman within the frame. The humour didn’t come from a place of mallice, rather that the scene looked rather absurd. It wasn’t often that students here held long conversations with any of the portraits – often due to the lack of interest from the painting rather than the students – so the sight looked foreign to her.

Somehow she could tell the boy wasn’t a Hogwarts student. His accent was the first clue, but he seemed to hold himself differently too, as if he didn't quite know his place here. She found herself more drawn to him, perhaps because of this, both because of her love of interacting with anything new and different, and because the usual prejudices and fears held against Slytherin students – particularly ones who appeared as intimidating as her – might not apply. She opened her mouth to speak, a joking quip about also preferring to speak to portraits over people anyway on the tip of her tongue, before a sudden sigh sounded from beside her. Her entire body jolted at the unexpected sound which with a sharp turn of her head, she realised was from another portrait just to her right. She immediately felt silly for jumping at such a thing and the laughter which had threatened to come out earlier slipped passed her lips – obnoxiously loud, accidentally mocking, and definitely heard by the boy she’d been watching.
