Do I Look Scared?
Backdated to June 2020
@Wyatt Starkey
Miranda wasn't in the best mood. It was raining outside, which meant no sunshine, and no fresh air unless she felt like getting soaked. The library was closed for maintenance after some ridiculous kid had tossed a stink bomb into it, and the school year was winding down, which meant going back to her home and her parents that pretended she didn't exist. So maybe not her favourite day.
Someone pushed past her roughly, sending her tumbling into the wall, and she glared fiercely at the person's back as they disappeared around a bend in the hall. Sure, it might've been an accident, but in her foul mood, it didn't feel that way.
Maybe a book will cheer me up, Miranda thought, but her hopes were quickly crushed when she remembered how she'd returned all her books the day before the library had closed. So. No books.
Muttering under her breath about the idiocy of some students, she made her way past countless turn-offs and doors, but ignored them all. There was nowhere for her to go. No classes to attend to, no friends to meet up with. How perfectly miserable.
A few more students passed her by, and she ignored them all. Now wasn't the best time for her chat with a stranger, not when she felt like punching something.

Wyatt always tried his best to mind his own business. He’d tell himself never to take anything too personal and to move on, but after being called names and being pushed around all day, he wasn’t in the mood to let a bump on the shoulder slide. When the girl who’d pushed past him just kept walking on without a word, he was a little angrier than he should’ve been in a situation like that.
Even though he witnessed the Ravenclaw who just pushed past him in the hall get knocked down by some Slytherin bloke before she even got close to Wyatt, he was still angry at her. Just because she got pushed around doesn’t mean she could be rude to anyone she wanted! “Am I supposed to apologize!? I thought Ravenclaws were smarter than that,” he grunted at the girl before he could stop himself.
What did he care, anyway? This girl invaded Wyatt’s personal space, so why did he have to control himself when this girl obviously didn’t care to? He clenched his fists and warped his face into a slight frown, as he tapped his foot at a rapid pace. “Just because you’re having a bad day doesn’t mean it’s everyone else’s issue!” Ironic, since Wyatt had a bad day, and that’s why he’s angry. All the time.

Miranda glanced up, startled by the unfamiliar voice. Her gaze settled on a boy that looked to be in the same year as her and was wearing the telltale emerald robes of a Slytherin. The house of the dark lord. Rationally, she knew that most of the students in that house were actually quite decent, but in her gloomy state of mind, that was where her thoughts immediately took her.
"Excuse me?" she asked, for of course she'd barely noticed when she'd accidentally pushed him. And besides, she wasn't feeling very apologetic at that moment. "Maybe you Slytherins should know better than to get into a person's way."
The boy clenched his fists and snapped something back, which only made her even more annoyed. "I never said it was, so maybe you should stop assuming things. Or are all Slytherins as dense as you? I guess you were right about Ravenclaws being smarter. We're definitely above your level." Miranda gave him an icy glare, but made no move to leave. She didn't have something to hit, but maybe a good argument would make things more interesting. And besides, if he annoyed her enough, she could still hit him. That option wasn't completely rules out yet.

"I never said it was, so maybe you should stop assuming things. Or are all Slytherins as dense as you? I guess you were right about Ravenclaws being smarter. We're definitely above your level."
“Were you able to find a hat that fit your big head in Diagon Alley?” He questioned with a sly smirk. Now, all that mattered was making this girl feel even worse. How dare she disrespect the integrity of Slytherin house. If she went on like this, he might curse her! It’d show her what happens when you mess with Slytherins. “It’s a wonder how you were even sorted. Did the hat need stitches?”
He let his fists relax and he narrowed his eyes. His little attempt to appear more menacing, meeting her icy glare with one of his own, just as cold- colder if possible. “Are all Ravenclaws this conceited or… is it just you.” He took a step closer. By then, they were about three feet apart. “I’m sure the reason you insist on keeping this argument centred around our Houses is because you could only dream of being in Slytherin.”
This girl was so conceited, Wyatt would’ve bet big money that she was a pure-blood. Something about pure-bloods… they’re all lousy and mean- or at least the one’s Wyatt’s (unfortunately) come across. His prejudice came from when his mother married a muggle, and her parents practically disowned her because of it. Blood was so important to these people they abandoned their daughter. Ridiculous.

Miranda knew they were both being quite nasty, but there was something about the boy's attitude that just rubbed her the wrong way. She couldn't help but feel as if she were right and he were wrong. He was the one who'd started it after all, with his needless insults. She couldn't really ignore that.
"Are all Ravenclaws this conceited or… is it just you.” The boy took a step closer. “I’m sure the reason you insist on keeping this argument centred around our Houses is because you could only dream of being in Slytherin.”
"You wish," Miranda growled, her face whitening in anger. She almost made a comment about the dark lord and the Slytherin house, but decided that was going a bit too far. And besides, she couldn't really bring that up without feeling guilty afterwards. "You're just a conceited fool that thinks everything is about him, no matter what, just so you can feel important. Well, news flash...you're not."
She snarled under her breath, then checked herself and tried to make her expression impassive. When she became angry like this, some of her...less humane characteristics started to break out. It probably wouldn't do if she tried to bite him.

"You wish." Miranda’s face whitened in anger. "You're just a conceited fool that thinks everything is about him, no matter what, just so you can feel important. Well, news flash… you're not."
The girl snarled, and you could tell she was praying Wyatt wouldn’t notice, but he did. He noticed most things. Like how, it seemed, whenever this girl got angry, her face would turn white as snow. And how when she spoke she growled in such a way it seemed she had experience… whatever that meant to Wyatt. Not to mention how it took about three seconds to piss her off. Wyatt was observant.
Nothing seemed right with this stuck-up Ravenclaw, and he wasn’t just thinking that because she’d wounded his pride and his ego in one swing. It was sort of easy to hurt Wyatt’s feelings, but he was really good at hiding them, or using his face to project what he wants someone to think he’s thinking at the moment. Right now, he wore an expressionless mask, his go-to face, really.
Wyatt never tried to feel important. Deep down, he knew he wouldn’t. He also knew though, in first meetings, he’d come across as aloof. He liked it that way, if he was to be honest. And since the rumours that he was related to the Death Eaters and that he practiced dark magic along with worshipping the Dark Lord, people avoided him. It was kind of nice. In a way, he was thankful for the rumour.
Because of the rumour, his peers feared him. Apparently this one hadn’t heard. Or maybe she had, and she was just pretending not to fear him. So many questions. But all this thinking, and he still hasn’t responded. He barely noticed how awkward the silence had been. “I don’t think you know me well enough to give me news flashes about my personality, but I appreciate the effort.”
“On the other hand, I feel I know you like a good friend, only by observing you the past… minute,” he guessed. He had no idea how long they’d been talking. It felt like years. “Your personality. Stuck up, petty, spoiled- new robes, shiny bracelet... Smart, I assume, since you’re a Ravenclaw. Not to mention how quickly you snap back in an argument. It all makes me think you’re a pure-blood.”
“When you’re mad, instead of getting red you get pale. Odd, yet… interesting.” He tapped his foot. “Snarling? Growling…?” When he said it out loud, he knew he could’ve easily tagged on werewolf at the end. Since that was a wild accusation, he just smirked. If she was a werewolf, like he suspected, she’d probably fess up or get really quiet- and if she did something else, she’d have some sort of tell that he was right.
“I don’t think I’m a fool. I don’t think you think I’m a fool.” He absent-mindedly scratched a scar (that was about two inches long, and next to his eyebrow). “I may be conceited, sure. But I don’t think I’m a fool.”

When the boy mentioned her snarling, she glared at him with even more hatred. If looks could kill, he probably wouldn’t be standing there anymore.
“So what if I’m a werewolf?” she snapped. “Are you going to hate me because of it? Because I’m something else? Well, it’s only you and every other human that does.”
“I don’t think I’m a fool. I don’t think you think I’m a fool. I may be conceited, sure. But I don’t think I’m a fool.” The boy continued to watch her, and his very aura seemed to radiate a smug certainty. Miranda barely suppressed another growl
Stop it, she told herself with the part of her mind that was still thinking rationally. Arguing with him is doing nothing more than riling you both up, so just stop. Turn around and walk away.
Unfortunately, the less rational part of her, the part more connected to her wolf nature, didn’t think that way.
“A fool, not a fool.” She laughed harshly, her eyes flashing angrily. “What’s the difference, really? Fools can do smart things, and smart people can do foolish things.” Which is what this is, her thoughts echoed. A foolish thing. Miranda ignored them. “So I wonder: which one are you?”

“So I wonder: which one are you?”
“I don’t think I’m an idiot, but what I think doesn’t matter much to you, does it?” He smiled a small, mischievous smile. “You know, Wolf, I don’t think you like me very much. But you’re still here.” Why is that, he thought to himself. This girl obviously didn’t like him, and she had every chance and every reason to walk away, but she stayed there… to argue? It was almost funny- maybe she was bored?
Another thing- she’d been so quick to tell Wyatt that she was a werewolf. And she also mentioned how the rest of the school reacts when they find out- negatively. It was odd that she was so ready to tell Wyatt something that most kids hide forever in an argument, especially when she knew Wyatt could turn around and make her an outcast in the school by telling the rest of the kids who don’t know about her ability. Odd.
“Well, I think you’re more than capable to make your own decisions, Wolf.” His smile only grew a touch wider as he said, “If it helps, I think you’re smart. I don’t like you at all, but I think you’re smart.” She did seem like an intelligent wolf. She was a Ravenclaw after all. And really, Wyatt didn’t care what this hot-headed girl thought of him. At the end of the day, he’d be the same person whether she thinks he’s smart or not.

Do I Look Scared?
Miranda chose not to answer the boy's question on why she hadn't left, because she honestly didn't know. Her only guess was that, like wild wolves, she hated to have her authority challenged. Walking away would seem too much like giving up for her taste. Although, she the part that really rankled her was the way he called her "wolf". She didn't mind having normal humans find out her true nature, because they'd probably find out anyway. And if someone acted like a friend when they thought you were human, and didn't when they found out you weren't, what use were they as a friend anyways? But the casual way he used it, his aggressive tone making it sound almost - but not quite - like an insult definitely rubbed her the wrong way. You messed with a wolf, and you'd end up seeing her claws.
“Well, I think you’re more than capable to make your own decisions, Wolf.” His smile grew wider, and Miranda narrowed her eyes. “If it helps, I think you’re smart. I don’t like you at all, but I think you’re smart.”
"Why should I care what you think?" Miranda snapped back, although she seemed a bit more placated then she had before. She couldn't help it. The boy was more observant than she'd given him credit for, and a slight burst of respect grew within her. But even if she respected him a bit, that didn't mean she had to like him. At all.
