A First for Everything
It was around 5:00 PM on a September night when Allie saw something strange. But because she was on her way to her last class of the day, Allie couldn't stop and take a closer look at it. It almost looked like. . . but it couldn't be. That wasn't possible. But Allie had to check, just in case. The rest of the day, Allie didn't have the chance to see what it was, which, to be honest, was slightly annoying. Knowing it might not be there the next time she walked by, Allie decided to sneak out at night.
On any other night, Allie would never have snuck out, but she was desperate to see if it was what she thought. So when the sun had fully set and the only sound in the dorm rooms was the sound of people breathing, Allie slipped out of bed, pulling a cloak around her shoulders so she wouldn't be cold.
Tiptoeing across the Ravenclaw Common Room and out into the corridors, Allie pulled her cloak tighter around herself. She knew sneaking around at night was something many other students did, but it wasn't like her to be doing this. . . What if she got caught? Then what would she do? Or say? Getting anxious, Allie almost ran down the last set of stairs to the second floor, out of breath but making sure to breath quietly.
Biting her lip as she made her way down the corridor, Allie turned the final corner - and there it was. A small envelope, sitting atop one of the suits of armor that lined the hall. Taking it into her hands, Allie glanced around quickly but didn't open the letter yet. She felt. . . breathless. In a good way. She had never exactly done anything like this, and she liked it much more than she'd thought she would. That's when she heard footsteps, so she ducked into a small alcove, hoping it wasn't a professor that was coming her way.

A First for Everything
There was still so much for Elyse to get used to, living here at Hogwarts. While she was getting familiar with the overall setting of the place, including some of the personalities in her own House, there was just no denying the sensation of homesickness rising in her belly.
All day, she'd been feeling unwell. Sitting through classes, barely able to concentrate because of the strike of loneliness and nausea hitting her - and it's only the first few classes! It felt like a heavy weight on her shoulders, but she persevered, making it through the entirety of the day before finally settling down in the comfort of her common room. Admittedly, despite it's luxuries, it wasn't quite the place of comfort she was hoping for, but still, she'd managed to fall asleep for a little while.
That is, until her upset stomach had roused her, and soon enough, she was in the infirmary, getting some medicine to settle it.
It was late, and she probably should have just stayed in the hospital wing, but she already was somewhat uncomfortable being away from the things she knew to be familiar, such as her own belongings. Eager to return, and surely she wasn't allowed out at night, she was trying to quickly get back to the common room before anyone caught her. There was panic, which overtook that sense of nausea, though as she turned the corner, she could hear something stirring nearby. Quickly, she halted, her imagination creeping in, increasing the paranoia, and against all that, she muttered out a rather trembly voice into the night, "... is anyone there?"
Gosh, she hoped it wasn't a teacher. She'd really be in for it, if it was.

Tucked into the alcove, Allie's heart was beating fast and loud. She was almost positive it was a professor coming her way, and was quite shocked when she heard the soft voice ask, "Is anyone there?" It wasn't a professor, that's for sure. Wondering if she should call back or not, there was a slight pause. Allie took a deep breath and hoped she wasn't making a mistake.
"Yes," she said, and stepped out into the corridors again. Looking around for a few seconds, Allie's eyes landed on a shorter girl with light red hair and green eyes. She was pretty, and she looked a little nervous. Smiling with relief, the Ravenclaw walked over to the other girl. "I'm Allie." she introduced herself as she quickly slipped the envelope into the pocket of her thick black cloak, hoping it wasn't too noticeable. She wanted to read the letter back in her dorms, not out in the corridors with the risk of getting caught.
"If it's alright, may I ask why you are out here this late?" She paused, then added, "I was. . ." Allie knew she would probably need to tell the other first year why she was sneaking around at night herself. "I saw something earlier, but didn't have a chance to look at it. And someone else might have found it if I hadn't grabbed it just now. . ." she ended up spilling more than she had meant to and had to keep from clapping her hand over her mouth.
Looking around the corridors, Allie made sure that there was no one else coming their way as she waited for the other girl's reply.

Another meek voice met her own. Elyse turned in the direction of the voice, finding a face that came with it. A young girl, probably her age though taller than her, with long brown hair and a bright smile emerged from the darkness of the alcove to meet her in the hallway. Not entirely what she expected, but at least it wasn't a teacher or a janitor skulking about, looking for students that were out of bed beyond curfew.
"Elyse," she greeted, somewhat hesitantly, only because they were clearly both not supposed to be out here. Relaxing only a little, though, upon realizing that Allie wasn't a threat, she returned Allie's with a smile of her own. "I was in the hospital wing for an upset stomach. Was just making my way back to my common room."
No way was she going to mention that she was homesick on top of that. Nope.
Luckily, Elyse didn't have to ask the same, for Allie seemed to nervously offer up her own reasoning for being out past curfew. It seemed like a legit reason, though she did have to wonder if it could have waited until the sun rose. Pretty gutsy, admittedly, and she admired that to some extent. Hopefully, things would stay in their favour.
"Oh," she blinked, surprised, then softened back into her usual smile. "That's pretty adventurous of you. Did you find what you were looking for?"

"Elyse," the girl introduced herself. Allie nodded and listened to the girl's explanation. It seemed like a much better reason to be walking around the dark castle past curfew than hers had been. . . Allie sighed but tuned back in in time to hear Elyse say, "That's pretty adventurous of you. Did you find what you were looking for?" Allie couldn't hold in her laugh, but she managed to keep it quiet.
"Adventurous isn't exactly what I would use to describe me," she admitted. "I don't even know why I did it. . . I'm usually a pretty big rule follower." Inside, Allie wanted to slap herself. The girl probably didn't want to know that Allie was one of those students. . . "Sorry, that's not how I usually introduce myself." The Ravenclaw blushed a little, then remembered the other part of what Elyse had said. "Oh, yes, I did find it." She didn't give too much details, kept her explanation quite simple.
Footsteps sounded from far away, but they seemed to be growing louder. Allie's eyes widened with alarm and she stood frozen for a few moments, looking like a deer caught in headlights. Then she unfroze and gestured for Elyse to follow her into the small alcove in the wall. Hopefully they wouldn't get caught, Allie thought to herself. She didn't know what she would do if they did.

"No?" Elyse mused, somewhat intrigued by the other girl's statement. "You're being pretty adventurous right now, I think. Sneaking out at night to look for something you saw earlier in the day. Pretty brave to me." Traits of bravery weren't just associated with those in Gryffindor. She'd noticed Ravenclaws seemed to have this natural curiosity that could get them into equal amounts of trouble. With her father hailing from Ravenclaw, she really wasn't surprised to see this, even if it was a little amusing.
Either way, she shrugged her shoulders helplessly, offering Allie a bit of a relieved smile. "I'm glad you were able to find what you were looking for." Even if it was in the middle of the night. Not like she was able to talk, anyway... she did go to the hospital wing in search of medicine, so...
As footsteps sounded, immediately the young Hufflepuff bristled with fear. Her eyes widened to the size of moons as she looked at Allie, almost searching for an unspoken answer. They'd be caught if they didn't find some place to hide!
With Allie's guidance, Elyse tucked herself into the alcove as well, squishing in the best she could so neither of them would be caught. Her green eyes glanced out, somewhat sideways, to the hall, to try and see who was coming by. Hopefully they wouldn't be caught here...

A First for Everything
Pressed into the alcove Allie thought about how Elyse seemed slightly interested in the fact that Allie wouldn't usually call herself adventurous or brave. Allie almost had to laugh, this girl should see her in the day time. Then she would understand - Allie was one of those students who raised her hand for everything in class, always knew the answer to things. . .
Shaking her head slightly to get rid of those thoughts - because nothing was wrong with who she was - Allie tried to stop her heart from pounding so loudly. Thinking had stopped her from being frightened for a little bit but now she wasn't sure how to calm down. She had almost never gotten in trouble before. . . it wasn't something she liked to do. And even if she had thought she liked the feeling of being a little risky before, the fear of being caught was much stronger.
Allie opened her eyes just a tiny bit, realizing only then that they had been squeezed tightly shut. Glancing over at Elyse, she sighed. What would the girl think of her now? Surely she could tell how frightened Allie was. . .
She was so lost in her thoughts that she barely registered that the sound of footsteps was coming closer and closer. When Allie finally noticed, the footsteps had stopped. Crossing her fingers underneath her cloak, she looked up at Elyse, biting her lip. She really wanted to take a strand of hair between her fingers and twirl it around, a habit she couldn't get rid of, no matter how hard she tried. But knowing it might give away their position, she withheld from doing it and waited in the dark alcove squeezed next to the other first year instead.
After a few more seconds, the sound of walking could be heard again, but now it was heading away from the two girls. Once it finally faded into the distance, Allie gave a audible sigh of relief and scrambled out of the claustrophobic space and turned to Elyse with a frightened look on her face.
"That was close," she murmured quietly in case whoever had walked by heard them and came back. Allie wondered what Elyse had thought of the experience, surely she hadn't been as nervous as Allie.

A First for Everything
Elyse could feel her heart beating loudly in her ears, to the extent that she had to wonder if Allie or the approaching figure could hear it. Even though her excuse for being out of bed was a valid one, she somehow doubted that it'd be taken more seriously when she was with someone else. Also, the risk of getting caught in general was both exhilarating and utterly terrifying, considering she was well on her way to earning herself a few house points already. She hadn't planned on losing them.
The footsteps came closer, closer yet, and Elyse felt herself sucking in all her breath as she glanced to Allie. At least she wasn't here alone, wasn't the only one who was absolutely freaking out on the inside about whether or not they'd be caught. This fear only seemed to worsen as the footsteps came to a halt. In that moment, Elyse practically froze, holding in all of her breath despite it making her feel a little dizzy. She couldn't even see who they were, with where she was positioned, and that just made this whole thing even worse.
She willed the person to go away, to just... not noticing them and leave. Go, go, go!
... And soon enough, those footsteps did eventually start to pace away from them. All the air suspended in Elyse's lungs came forth in a heavy breath, causing her to sigh and huff a little in order to regain composure. She tumbled out after Allie, a hand on her chest as she attempted to slow her racing heart.
"Yeah..." she agreed with a slight nod of her head. "Did you see who it was? Maybe one of the janitors..."

"Yeah. . . Did you see who it was? Maybe one of the janitors. . ." Elyse agreed with Allie, who shook her head, looking around again before responding, just to make sure (again) that no one was coming their way. She didn't want to be caught by surprise again if someone did.
"No, I couldn't see anything. It was too dark in the alcove and I didn't really want to move in case. . ." Hesitating, Allie didn't finish. She was afraid she might jinx it or something, which she knew was quite silly, but it had happened to her before, so she wasn't willing to risk it. "But you're probably right anyway, most likely it was a janitor." Allie's heart was still beating fast and hard. She couldn't remember a time when she had done anything this risky. . . and almost got caught. She gave Elyse a small smile, the best she could muster under their circumstances.
"We should head back to our dorms," Allie said, quite reluctantly. She wished she could keep talking to Elyse, but she knew they might get caught if they did. . . "Would you like to meet again sometime?" Allie asked her, then gave the other girl a wry grin. "Not in the night after curfew, of course." She waited for the other girl's answer expectantly.

Elyse's shoulders slumped a little as Allie confirmed that she, too, saw nothing of who had come by them tonight. Still, she couldn't be upset. The truth was, both of them were trying their hardest to be as quiet as mice, so there couldn't have been any way for them to find out who it was that passed by when any sort of movement could have drawn attention to them.
"Ah, well," she said rather casually. "I guess it can't be helped, can it? I'd rather've not been caught trying to find out." Regardless, she, too, smiled at Allie, for that bit of adventure was actually quite fun, despite it almost getting them in trouble.
With that said and done, it was Allie suggesting they return to their dorms. Probably a wise idea, considering they could run into more problems if they stayed out any longer. Elyse nodded her head in agreement, her upper body tilting forward towards Allie a little so that her hands could clasp to themselves behind her back.
"I think it'd be much better to meet you again during the day time. Maybe in the Great Hall or the Library?" She tilted her head. "Why don't we exchange owls? My last name is Crimson. That way, we can plan something!"
Elyse now waved her hand, starting to side-shuffle past Allie. "I look forward to talking with you more, Allie!"
And with that, she headed down the corridor to make for her common room, lest she find the earlier janitor and end up with reduced house points.
