Basic Site Rules
Website Rules

Listed below are a few important rules of our website. Please carefully read them to be able to take a better place in your adventure on Hogwarts.io If any questions concerning the website are troubling you, feel free to share them on this specific topic: FAQ - Hogwarts

1.) Multi-Accounts: As you probably read in your first arrival owl, multi-account are formally prohibited. If you are caught multi-accounting, it is likely that you will be banned from the site. A character is unique. You will have to write his full history, his adventure, his relations with others students but also all of his experience. Therefore, you will be able to participate in a few special systems such as the homework, Quidditch, Duel and way more! Which means you can not do this and maintain a quality character on many accounts. This is a unique journey for a unique character. Nevertheless, we understand special cases such as same residence, family members, etc. To prevent confusion or any others situations, please write a member of the Head of House team an owl.

*The staff reserves themselves the right to deactivate/delete any account that would not respect this specific rule.
  1. We do actively monitor accounts after creation for multi-accounting. Some players attempt to trick our systems with the use of VPNs and Proxies, we use a number of tools to monitor for this. This is done not only for the sake of fairness within the community as some players use multi accounts to gain an advantageous status in the community but also for the sake of safety.
  2. It is considered to be a violation of trust to pose as another person in this community. While, not a multi-account, if this is being done to obfuscate your presence so your partner, family member, classmate, housemate or friend is unaware of your presence. We will not be a party to such acts of duplicity. On occasion, we will send out owls to accounts that share an IP as a receipt that they share an IP.
2.) If you wish to leave the website: An important to know is that if you wish to leave the website, your account will be deactivated and your personal data will kept safe but we do not delete your account. Your posts and your account name will still be available to read after you leave the community but nobody else will take over your account or your character as that belongs to you. We do not delete account because if we delete your presence from the site entirely, each of the threads you participated in would be deleted and this would create inconsistency on the website, disrupting other player's post histories.

*The only exception to this is when a minor's ( a user under 18 ) parent asks for deletion of the account. In which case we do delete the account entirely (after the parent contacts the administration) and we also IP ban the account so that the former user remains compliant with their parent's wishes and does not return to this site.

Please be aware that we do not offer "secret deactivations", if a user chooses to just stop using one account and creates another that slips past out staff (with VPNs or lies), we will treat this as a multiaccount and ban you from the community.

3.) Respect for each other: Please be respectful of each other. Harassment of users and/or staff will not be tolerated. We have a system for "do not contact" requests and we expect them to be honored both ways (from the person that requested the do not contact and the subject of the do not contact). If a user is caught breaking a do not contact, we will ban them from the community without warning. Depending on the circumstance, rude behavior or bully behaviors may result in staff intervention ranging from a request to cease but depending on the severity, this can result in a ban.

4.) Racist Terms: We are all equal humans. Which means that racist terms between users are not allowed. However, the Hogwarts universe has some differences of thinking between Pure-Blood and Muggle-born sometimes, (It is not all of the time) some terms like ‘’Mudblood’’ can be accepted in this RPG.

5.) Variety of Ages: The website is open to a large variety of ages. Which mean that everyone must be careful about the content of their posts and threads. The staff reserves the right to request you to modify your post or risk post deletion if you break site rating rules.

6.) Foreign Language: The use of foreign language or cryptogram is accepted on our website. (For character development or any useful reason) However, you need to provide an understandable translation for it under Reducio (the spoiler option) or some other means within the post. The staff reserves the right to request you to modify your post or risk post deletion if you break the foreign language rule.

7.) Everything done by your account will be your responsibility. (Good or Bad) We will not forget the positive influence you had on this community nor will we forget negative moments you might have caused. While it is possible that a friend of yours decided to take over your account for a few hours, causing you to do something regrettable in or to this community, the responsibility of their actions is laid at your feet. Keep your password safe and secure.

8.) Plagiarism. Plagiarism is defined as the practice of taking someone else's work or ideas and passing them off as one's own. Your character is intended to be unique. That would mean that your character is not a copy of a literary work, something or someone in the media, from another fandom or the work of another player. This does extend to artwork that you share on the community. You do not need to source the artwork that you use for your avatar, in your posts or in your encyclopedia. It is nice to do, especially with a link back to the creator, but we will not make users do this. However, if you claim artwork to be your own, we do expect your claim to be true. The staff reserves the right to remove artwork that is falsely claimed as yours, the verify and to clarify the legitimacy of your claims.
- AI work belongs to the AI and is not your work.
- Users are expected to cite AI work (not claim it is their own) if they trade it, offer it to others or 'show it off.'
- Users are expected to write their own posts. An AI's work is not your own.
- Users are expected to do their own lessons (homework). An AI answering it for you can be detected with programs that the staff has access to, we will recognize this and you will lose your homework privileges if you attempt to use an AI.
9.) Notifications - On Discord we know that we should obtain consent from players before pinging them, this is because pings can be intrusive to people's lives. Many keep their notifications on because they cannot miss certain things or if something *very important* requires their attention. On site, there is often implied consent in shared threads when players tag one another in threads or when something has been approved in an official capacity. The site itself does not advertise, there is no advert banners on this site and it is very rare that an unsolicited owl is sent to a user from a staff member because this is intrusive to players. Do not send players unsolicited owls, DMs, emails or tags to direct players to your thread. If you are looking to attract members to your thread, you can reach out in our #ic-thread-sharing channel of our Discord. More information regarding our Discord can be found here. You can also post in our RPGs Partner Request Thread located here. If you are getting unsolicited owls, DMs or tags to alert you to a thread a user is advertising (it is a common practice to mention users when their character has been mentioned), please reach out to the staff. The staff reserves the right to request you to modify your post or risk post deletion.

10.) Double Posting DO NOT double post in the OOC Areas. Use the edit feature to add to your post rather than posting again. This allows other users the opportunity to make replies and prevents spamming. If you are in a sports (quidditch, dueling, broom raking) strat thread in lockers, this does not apply. In IC areas you may only double post if you are posting as yourself followed by your iNPC or vice versa. You may only do two consecutive posts, after that you must wait for another player to reply. If you are writing a solo thread, then you are able to post consecutively.

Staff members will never ask you for your password or any personal information.

Edit Log:
Jan 6 2022- Double Posting
Mar 19 2022 - Fixed a numbering mistake

Basic Site Rules
Discord

We have a Discord Channel.

What is Discord?

Discord is a proprietary freeware VoIP application designed for gaming communities. Discord runs on Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, Linux, and in web browsers. It is a common medium for communication online in RP communities, social groups, and varied online interests. Our Discord channel is considered SAFE FOR WORK so you should not have to worry about inappropriate materials being sent over our Discord Channel. This, of course, cannot be promised because we cannot prevent people's bad behaviors all of the time but this Discord Channel is actively moderated by the Hogwarts.io staff.

Below is a list of our server rules. Make sure to read them all:
1.) No flaming, flame baiting, roasting, or trolling.
-Flaming: scolding/insulting a player in public
-Flame Baiting: posting to elicit flaming or active, public discussions at the expense of another player
-Roasting: publicly humiliating someone in a way that appears humorous/joking
-Trolling: someone who purposely argues/upsets others to create friction through inflammatory, off-topic, and purposely tangential discussion for one’s amusement or other gain
a.) Don’t share personal information about other users. It’s not yours to share. If they want to, they will share it. Telling other people about others’ personal details is not necessary. Some players give permission to share personal information about them. We will fact-check all claims of permission being granted. We expect you to be able to supply a screenshot or a papertrail. Verbal consent has no papertrail and will not be considered 'proof.'
b.) If a user does not want to be shipped, called a nickname, etc., you STOP. If you continue, you are trolling them. You SHOULD NOT be teasing them and writing about them. It is their character. Make sure that whoever you are writing/talking about gives permission to your shipping/writing beforehand. This rule includes general discussion, fanfiction, and AUs. We will fact-check all claims of permission being granted. We expect you to be able to supply a screenshot or a papertrail. Verbal consent has no papertrail and will not be considered 'proof.'
c.) "Not knowing someone is going to take something a certain way" is not an excuse because you "thought they would take your harassing behavior as a joke." It is your responsibility (and risk) to roughly/cruelly joke with your peer(s). Be certain that they will find that sort of humor funny before you engage.
d.) This includes playing the middle man for banned or muted members where you convey their messages. They were banned for a reason and can attempt to contact a Head of House Team Member to attempt to appeal this. You will be held responsible for the words you share so please take that into consideration. If you feel the need to advocate for a certain player, please contact a Head of House or a staff member you feel comfortable with and we will arrange a meeting to discuss your concerns.

2.) No racist or special interest group insults. (Not listing them, you know what these are.) And yes, this means no jokes about them even if you find them funny. We have many people who identify from various groups, communities, and cultures who can be offended by such commentary.

3.) This is a safe for work and PG-13 channel. Don't show nude pictures, various drug memes, or things that if someone's boss would look at the channel that they would be in trouble. No discussions/jokes regarding Drugs,  Sexual themes/nature, Prostitution, Explicit Violence (especially real life). This is a PG 13 community so where it ends in a PG 13 conversation is where it ends here in this channel. To clarify: a lot of things can be tied to one of the above, we are talking about explicit content here. Please use common sense.
a.) Discord photo sharing (especially selfies) must adhere to all PG-13 rules. Bodies must be properly clothed in all photos including but not limited to: No cleavage, nothing that shows higher up than mid-thigh on the leg. Please keep in mind that if you are a minor that sharing your photos on the internet, even if you delete them, can be dangerous. Once it hits the internet it never actually goes away even if you have deleted it.

4.) As this is a PG-13 and safe for work channel, limit swearing. Minor curse words, such as “ass” or “damn” are permitted, but words of greater offensiveness are not. This includes using only the first and the last letter of a cuss word. Either omit the word entirely or replace it with symbols (&*X%!).

5.) Your Discord nickname for our server must be recognisable and associated with your player name, including your character’s first name and last initial. Nicknames should be appropriate at all times - if it is not appropriate to say, it is not an appropriate name. If not, staff will change it, but if this happens repetitively, this can quickly escalate to greater consequences, such as banning.
a.) Your Discord Custom Status needs to be appropriate and in line with the rules. Whilst we understand that the status is not server specific, it is still visible to our members - including our younger members. Staff will ask you to change your status if it's offensive, not safe for work or against the site rating (PG-13). If you do not change it or this happens repetitively, it will lead to greater consequences, such as removal from the server.

6.) Do not spam the regular channels. The spam channel is available for spamming.

7.) Please don't tag people or groups for the sake of doing so. It can be intrusive to those players and their real lives. If you must tag them, ensure that they are online and they are okay with the tag first. If you have something very specific that cannot be missed by them that cannot be DM'd for whatever reason, then please use the tag function, as that is what it is for. Otherwise, it is a rude activity.
a.) If this is for casual use (such as saying "hi"), we expect permission to be obtained before you engage in the practice of tagging the player and reserve the right to ask for a papertrail of their consent. Randomly adding people to this casual process and being told after if it is acceptable or not by the recipient is not an acceptable practice.

8.) If you write in another language, provide an accurate translation. As mentioned in rule 2, we have people who identify from various groups, cultures, and communities, and we seek to be inclusive of all differences but it is also rude to exclude players that do not speak that language from joining the conversation

9.) Do not claim other people's work as your own (i.e. music, art, pictures, writings etc). This includes copying people's work with minor edits or line tracing and then claiming it as your own.
a.) Do not edit another community member's work without their permission. We will fact check any permission you claim to have gotten and may ask for a papertrail. Verbal consent does not count, and if it is your word against theirs and you cannot supply proof we will assume that you did not have permission and that you lied.
b.) Edits are common on the internet, your editing is also worthy of credit but so is the original artist. We do not expect a works cited or a reference page, but we do expect you to at least state that it is an edit.

10.) Your account is your responsibility. This means that if someone takes over your account and does something inappropriate on it, you will be held liable for this. This also means that you will be held responsible for the content of the information you send, so if you post an inappropriate picture, or a video that is not site appropriate, you will be held responsible for it. "I did not notice" or "I did not read the entire link" or "see the whole thing" is not an excuse. So think about what you post.

11.) You cannot pretend to be other users, even if you have their permission.

12.) Do not advertise for other websites or Discords in our Discord.

13.) Persistent leaving/rejoining the server, especially as a response to drama, will not be permitted. Staff reserves the right to inquire your reasons for leaving and rejoining the server, as well as deny your request if the reason is not sufficient. If used as a means to avoid being penalized for behaviors, the staff will not re-add you to the community.

14.) Solicitation is not something we allow, this being in private message on our Discord or in our on site private message system (owls). This includes advertising for other discords, other communities, selling products, other websites and your shops, threads or clubs on site. We do have a thread where players can seek roleplay partners on site as well as a channel in discord where you can mention threads that may be of interest.
  • Do not spam this thread or the discord channel, if we see daily/weekly reposts to advertise we will remove your ability to post in these areas.
  • Blind messaging/soliciting users on our discord will result in your removal from our discord; Blind messaging/soliciting users via owls will result in the loss of your ability to use our private messaging (owl) system.
  • We do not offer a thread, forum area or channel for you to advertise other discords or communities.
  • Do not make your own thread or use the general chat areas as places to advertise, you will again lose your ability to post in these areas if you do this.
  • If you get a message from someone soliciting you to join a group, a community, purchase something, etc. Please take a screen shot and forward it to myself or another Head of House member.
You are expected to comply with the instructions of the moderators. If they are being unreasonable with their expectations, you can file a complaint with the staff, but you are expected to comply at the time. Any misuse of their position will be dealt with internally.

Moderators include: the Head of House administrative team, the Professors, Assistants as well as Prefects.

Failure to comply with these standards will possibly result in staff warnings, your account being muted, your post being altered or deleted or your account being removed/banned from our community depending on the severity and frequency of offence.
These expectations are to maintain compliance with our site rating of PG 13. Failure to comply with these standards will possibly result in staff warnings, your account being muted, your post being altered or deleted or your account being removed/banned from our community depending on the severity and frequency of offences.

Joining Our Discord
To join our Discord we use a registry [located here] where you will be asked to provide your character name as well as your Discord username (with the numbers at the end). This is necessary because it allows us to be certain of who you are. We have had past incidents where a user has pretended to be another user, we will be endeavoring to prevent repeat incidents.

It is important to note that the link that gives you access to our discord only provides temporary access. What is temporary access? Temporary access means that members who join are automatically kicked when they disconnect unless a role is assigned. Once a role is assigned, you would have permanent status meaning that you can stay in the discord unless you leave, you are removed or the discord for whatever reason no longer exists. So make sure you follow the bot/moderator's instructions and that you use a stable internet connection when you join our discord. If you got kicked waiting to join, it is likely your internet disconnected. Just rejoin and a moderator will assist you.
Edit Log: April 2 - Link - Solicitation

This is the "Game Master" account. Please do not owl this account, unless specified. This account is not moderated actively and therefore, you may not receive a response.

Basic Site Rules
RPG Rules

An RPG is a post-by-post story which can involve one (solo) or several (public/reserved) characters. Some have a plot, some simply are an improvised story. An RPG is composed by several RPs. RP here means post.

Example : an RPG can have 10 RPs which involves two characters. Each character has

                          posted 5 times.

The primary goal of an RPG, is to create situations which allow your character to develop his/her personality, ambitions, knowledge, skills, relationships with others. The way you plan your RPGs is yours to decide.

We have some basic rules for role-play which are as follows:

1.) A minimum of 200 words is required. This counts only your own original words - quoting another player's post does not count towards the word count. This rule is there to create a certain coherence between the players. Nevertheless, this allows you to create an atmosphere around your character. Therefore, 200 will make you develop your skills in RPG and improve yourself.

Bellow are a few ways to achieve more easily the 200 words :
  • Describe your actions correctly: Take the time to describe every little detail of the place where you are RPing. (The table, the chair, anything that could enter in the peripheral vision of your character. It will help you to create a certain atmosphere for the reader) Feel free to explain the said atmosphere.
  • Describe your actions towards your partners: At the same time, take all of the information that you need from your partner to write your RP post. Each little detail can make you write a few words. How is your character acting towards a certain action your partner has taken? Is he affected by his background when he answers an action in a specific way? If so, write it!
  • Describe your feeling towards those actions: This might be the most important one to make you write a lot of words. Describe how your character is feeling towards those events. Why is he feeling like this? Is there a specific reason to resent certain feelings towards an action? (They could be linked to his background, experience, personality, etc.)
  • Memories/Ambitions: Whatever you are experiencing may bring back a memory of a past incident that had relevance to your character, this situation or this moment might mark a change in your character. Write it out!
Please note that quoting someone else's work (like your RP partner's words or the lyrics of a song) does not count towards the word count minimum. In addition OC (out of character) statements do not count either.

2.) Think about your topic titles. To clearly convey what a thread is about, consider the topic title that you use. Please make sure that the topic title is compliant with the site rules in regards to content. Also, we use tags to mark many of our threads.

To write correct information into your title please use this model.

Welcome to Hogwarts [Public]

A Friend Visit [PV Ackerley Blackburn]

This will makes have a small rectangle around the specific pieces of information. It will make it clearer for all users.

Also, below is written the type of RPG thread according to the numbers of words. This might be useful if you are looking for players with a certain level of experience.
  • RPG: A minimum of 200 words are needed in those kinds of RPG. This is the standard type of thread we can ask. Refer yourself to the first point above for more pieces of information.
  • RPG+: A minimum of 400 words are needed in those kinds of RPG.
  • RPG ++: A minimum of 600 words are needed in those kinds of RPG.
(This information is optional. You don't necessarily have to write which type of RPG you are doing. All threads are considered by default to be RPG or 200 words unless otherwise specified.)

For more information regarding tagging threads, please click here.

3.) Consider the icons you use for your thread. Another important step when you create a topic would be to choose the right Icon for it. A specific RPG Icon has been created which allow you to recognize which threads are roleplay topics and which ones are out of character discussion threads. Using the correct icon (one which designates your roleplay threads as roleplays) makes it easier for you to find your roleplay threads in the future. Refer to the bottom of the page and you will note a hyperlink that states ''My RP.''

Here the RPG Icon : Image

For more information regarding the other thread symbols and their uses please refer to this thread.

4.) Write your ''Out of Character'' pieces of information under Reducio. It will make the reader have a better experience while reading your character adventure.

Here an example:

Reducio
The Reducio option is looking like a little wand in the BBcode table. Here a look at the Icon : Image

Otherwise, at the very least clearly mark what is an OC (out of character) statement and what is not.

5.) Communication between RP Partners. We have a beautiful topic for RPG partners requests. Leaky Cauldron - RPG's Partner Requests. If you want to find a partner for an RP it is the ideal place for it. However, you can always ask an individual by sending them an owl. Open threads mean that you can join the thread, you do not need to place an out of character message in the thread asking for permission to join. However, if you do have a question about a thread, please do not post your question and rather send the party an owl. It will make it easier to keep a clean and easy to read environment.

6.) When you want to leave an RPG Topic, write this under Reducio in your last post.

Here an example:

Reducio
I am done with this thread, I will then leave it.

Quick information: When you write under Reducio, you do not have to write: OOC before. Otherwise, please again clearly designate out of character statements from in character statements.

Marking that you are leaving a topic lets the mods know that a thread is closed and completed.

7.) It would always be preferable to have a structure for an open thread. Which means that if you have more than 3 wizards/witches in your thread, you need to determine a certain order. (To keep some order, it would be preferable to do so by sending an owl to your partners) However, sometimes this can be problematic. If one of your partners have not informed you of a sudden decrease of presence and have not posted for at least 1 week, you can overpass him (skip their turn) and continue your RP normally. The members of the thread might agree upon another standard (such as 2 weeks or 3 days) but in those cases, everyone already in the thread needs to agree to this and those that enter the thread later would be tacitly agreeing to this standard upon joining the thread.

8.) Metagaming and Godmodding
  • The only character you are able to control is yours. Remember that your partner might have chosen another action other than the one you expect him/her to take. If you really want to do something specific that would affect your partner, send him an owl before doing so. (In some particular situations, a third party (neutral) is used to determine your successes and failures against other users as a "moderator". This is used to assist in the creation of a collaborative story with other users. To clarify, you must get clear permission, conversing about role play plans does not remotely fulfill the concept of permission and consent. If you say that you got permission from someone to control their character, there should be a clear paper trail of their consent.
  • You don't necessarily ''know'' everything that is written in your partner post. Most of the users are writing in the third person which mean there is a lot of narration. Those parts can be known by you the writer or reader, but not bour character. Your partner might think about how he feels about different actions, persons, etc. But those are in his head and you are not able to read their mind. They might refer to another event that your character knows nothing about in their narration but unless they shared it with you, you would not know this information.
  • You are free to take your time in answering a post. Even though your partner could be going at a faster pace than you, we recommend that you take time and answer at your own pace. We would prefer that you have qualities answers than frequent responses.
  • You and your character are two separate entities ! : therefore, the stories you write are about your character, NOT yourself (no matter how fabulous you are). It is with high certainty that, at some points, you character will have thoughts, feelings, expectations different from what you would have. That is a potential to explore, not censor.
  • Respect your character : if she or he is eleven-years-old, they have to act like one ! It does not make any sense to see eleven-years-old get drunk while visiting Hogsmeade (which in itself is impossible due to the fact that she/he has to be Third Year) or use incredibly complex spells while only having attended 2 classes in their whole life. Sure your character can be mature and wise, but that's it. Be realistic.
  • Former and Banned Players Still Own their Characters : This site has a rule against godmodding former users. This being because they have left the site or they have been banned from the site. We ask that players not mention them, write letters to them, or state that they are doing anything any particular. The reason for this is because of informed consent - the user (banned or just gone) has a right to their character and their work/writing. They should be able to state in a place where the staff or community can see it that they give consent. If a user is not on the site anymore, we have to take a user's word for it. It is not appropriate for the staff to verify (or re-verify) that consent has been granted with a user no longer on the site. Further, the user has the right to know what was being said of their character, the context of the situation and if they are no longer on the site because they have left the site or they were banned this would mean that they are expected to check-in to the site they have either left or are no longer allowed to be on. Again, this is not appropriate. Finally, users have the right to withdraw their permission. A user can say "sure, use my character however you want" but at a later time change their mind (for many reasons) and they would need a clear avenue to withdraw their consent. Again, if a user is no longer on the site or was banned from the site, they would not have a clear, official means to do this.
9.) Magic on Hogwarts and Beyond: As a student, you can only learn spells you learned through the Lessons/Homework provided in your classes, you also automatically learn spells for that year upon graduation. You're not allowed to make up spells. Also remember that the use of spells outside of Hogwarts (London and greater) is not allowed by the Ministry of Magic and can be detected. Any misuse of magic will result in a moderator contacting you asking you to edit your post. When it comes to magical creatures, please remember that they are generally under the care of our Care of Magical Creatures Professor, so randomly being attacked by a magical creature in the halls of the school for example is very unlikely and suggests that our Professor i having a hard time managing their creatures. Please keep this in mind and reach out to our Care of Magical Creatures Professor if you are looking for a way of interfacing with a magical creature while on Hogwarts grounds.

For more information regarding how you learn spells, please refer to this thread.

10.) Play within the spirit of the System: Please do not game the systems we have and try to play with the spirit of the game in mind when you RP or make posts. This would be trying to out of character trick or manipulate users. Altering the OC ability of others to perceive a topic, the information exchanged therwithin or somehow altering the content of a post. This would be cheating and while this is an obvious statement "please do not cheat", I am also going to state it here -- please do not cheat.

11.) Please make sure life changes and transitions make sense: This is a basic roleplaying task where if you look a certain way, act a certain way, etc. You need to remain consistent in this or explain the changes. The growth and development of your character is expected, but it needs to make sense logically. You cannot for instance be a young Asian girl and then become a young Caucasian boy, or suddenly go from being named Samantha to being named Emily. You can change some aspects of your character, a shy person comes out of their shell because of the great friendship she developed with someone for instance or your blonde character becomes a red head because of some boxed hair dye. There is a plausible explanation that makes sense in the universe and within the context of the systems available here on the site. If you have any questions regarding how to do this or if something is possible, please contact a staff member.

12.) Information Acquisition is only obtained in character. All information a player gains is done in character in a way that is visible for other roleplayers OC. Meaning - we do not allow you to write in a foreign language without a translation. We do not allow players to hide messages inside of broken links or using the transparent color or a very small font. That information will be retconned (meaning it never happened) the first time we discover this and will likely show the hidden information. Repeat incidents will likely result in your dismissal from the community.
  • Roleplays done via. private message or over discord do not count.
  • Messages must be legible, the content translated and visible to users.
13.) Double Posting: In roleplays there is no specific turn order that is enforced but we do ask members to give other members an opportunity to reply to roleplay threads. This is considered to be a courtesy.

14.) Backdating and Forward Dating Players can backdate their threads as far back as they would like. Players can only forward date threads up to 1 month. The exception to this is in the summer months were we expand forward dating up to three months (June to August), always ending on September 1st to accommodate new users that joined the site during the summer and have chosen to start their wizarding journey in September.
Backdating is the declaration that the thread is taking place at a time before the date of the first post.
Forward dating is the declaration that a thread is taking place in the future, at a time after the date that the first post of a thread was.

** All threads are considered to have taken place on or within a few days of the date of the first post.
** The maker of the thread (whoever made the first post) declares in their post what date the thread is taking place.

15.) Respecting Boundaries: As a player you have the right to boundaries that are respected. If you do not wish to communicate with a user for any reason, you have the right to ask them to no longer contact you. It is our expectation that your boundaries are respected. So if you block someone on discord and they use our site to continue to speak with you, knowing that they are blocked (disrespecting and ignoring your boundary) you can contact administration (with screenshots) and we will intervene. It is our expectation that they are aware of the boundary. Sending them a clear owl stating that you wish to sever all communication is a clear way to do this. If they send you a letter after being asked to cease communication on site, that is inappropriate. Are there reasonable exceptions to this? Yes, but they are incredibly rare. If you need to communicate something to them, you can reach out to the staff and they can bridge this. But if it is a lengthy explanation of your feelings or a request to talk then the answer will be no. If it is "please submit my moves for this match" or "this strat" then by all means we will transmit the information necessary but nothing more.
Dear [Name];

I am sending you this letter to ask you to cease all communication with me -- this means I do not wish to speak with you over discord DMs, site private message owls, email, etc. This is because [insert reason or skip this] I no longer feel comfortable remaining in communication with you. I have screen shot this communication for my records. If you continue to communicate with me despite this firm boundary that I have placed, I will be forced to contact the site administration.
15.) You Need to Own ItIf you are roleplaying that you are using a potion item, a magical item that we sell in the shop, a specific sort of broom, you need to own (and have) the item in your inventory. This means that you need to purchase the item with your hard-earned galleons.

You will need to have the galleons on hand to buy an item in the shop.
Note: the galleons you have on hand and your total worth (money and items) are different things. One if the amount of money that you have and the other (as it says directly below total worth) is the money you have on hand and the value of any items that you own. So if you own 10 galleons worth of candy from the shop and have 5 galleons, your amount on hand would be 5 galleons and your total worth would be 15.

16.) Posing as Staff Do not do this. Staff includes sport captains, mentors in the mentorship program, professors, prefects and heads of house. While we will also approve of players answering questions, running unofficial matches and assisting or working with users to improve the community, it is the very basic expectation that you are honest with members. Telling someone that you are their mentor when you are not a mentor at all will be noticed when an actual mentor takes on the player and the player is confused and asks why they need 2 mentors. It is not a good experience for anyone and it undermines the trust the community has in staff members when they do not know if the staff are even "real."

Basics of Interactions

As of late I have gotten a lot of comments and concerns from users regarding topics being shared and some players feeling offended and others feeling concerned. It unlikely that these comments came from a 'bad' place and while some may say that certain things are 'common sense', most social constructs are learned and there is a chance that some people have never been taught these facets. As such, I have created a list (in no particular order) of issues we have come accross.

Content - PG 13 is a vague rating for a reason, there is context and there are situations that make content acceptable and then there are some subjects that are never acceptable. What does this mean? Let us take sex, a subject that pretty much demolishes PG13. The actual act does go beyond site rating, however a discussion in terms of safety (safe sex) or from a medical standpoint is generally permissible.

International Considerations - we are an international community, while there may be a sense of ethnocentrism for some of us and there is nothing wrong with having a sense of pride, disparaging another country is insulting. Disparaging the American diet, making generalizations about Islamic countries, laughing about certain racial stereotypes (even when you are from that country and making fun of your own people), etc. will leave people feeling uncomfortable and upset. Making fun of certain politicians (even if IMGUR made a real funny comment about them) is a bad idea. This is one of those - if you do not have something nice to say (even if it is about your people) then do not say anything at all.

Abuse - I report abuse. If you talk about being abused, being hit, sexually assaulted, having meals withheld (not a fully inclusive list), etc. I will not only be concerned about you but there is a good chance I will be reaching out to the proper authorities for your safety. I will be happy to also offer links and resources for anyone (minor or adult) in an abusive situation. I do not consider comments about abuse to be jokes and will always consider them to be a cry for help. We do not allow abuse in character on the site either, this is a part of our site rating limitation which also extends to the out of character.

Know Your Audience - there is a time, a place and an audience for most discussions. Death, injury, disease, etc. can be sore subjects. This is coming from someone who has worked in healthcare for years. There are some aspects of your life, potentially your work day or curriculum that are not for public consumption. A lot of time these subjects are best relegated for direct messages.

Contrarianism - when people are having a discussion about a topic (I love anime for example), this is not the time and place to say "I think that is terrible, this is better." This is not to say that the opinion is invalid but when you walk into a place where people are celebrating something that they enjoy, this sort of thing is usually taken negatively by those in that discussion.

Notifications - On Discord we know that we should obtain consent from players before pinging them, this is because pings can be intrusive to people's lives. If you are looking to attract members to your thread, you can reach out in our IC/OOC Thread Sharing thread located here or the #thread-sharing channel of our Discord. More information regarding our Discord can be found here. You can also post in our RPGs Partner Request Thread located here. If you are getting unsolicited owls, DMs or tags to alert you to a thread a user is advertising (it is a common practice to mention users when their character has been mentioned), please reach out to the staff.

Harassment - There will be cases where you will not get along with everyone. It might be a past trespass or simply a mismatch of personalities. The community is large, there are plenty of places to be, if you do not get along with someone else leave them alone. There is no need to interface with users you do not get along with. Do not use your character as a weapon against another player, this would be considered harassment. Don't enter threads with one another. In large event threads we will not be enforcing a first come-first-serve situation, if there are issues between you and another player, please communicate with the staff so we do not inadvertently pair you with them.

Mental Health & Disabilities - we have members of the community with various mental health issues and disabilities. Some members find roleplaying having such issues integral to their character, it is the expectation that they honor the condition fully in their roleplay and don't use "I am craaaaazy" as a reason for certain behaviors because this is insulting to those that suffer from these conditions or use mental health issues (such as multiple personality) to remove responsibility for their character's behavior or an excuse to attack players. For those that suffer from conditions out of character, please remember we have a site rating (discussions about self harm and suicide are beyond our site rating but if you need help my DMs are open and will be happy to refer you to resources) and while anxiety, depression, rage disorders, etc. may explain certain behaviors they do not excuse behaviors. If you feel that your mental health requires a step away, please do so. Reach out to a staff member and we will try to provide you with a safe corner.

Respect Blocks - if someone has you blocked, do not use other players to convey messages from you to them. Do not call them out in general areas like the site Discord and do not attempt to contact them via on-site mediums (such as owls or on site posts). When someone requests space, this needs to be honored. When it comes to staff, there is sometimes an exception - that being if there is an issue regardless of being disliked they may need to reach out to you. If there is a known issue, another staff member can carry out these communications in place of the staff member that there is tensions with. If there are staff members that you do not feel comfortable being contacted by, please contact myself or another Head of House. If the issue is me, feel free to contact another Head of House. But please know, if your issue is half the staff team, the constant is yourself so some introspection might be required. For those who have blocked a member, reach out to myself or another staff member and we can discuss ways you can further protect yourself against potential harassment.

Lying - players fact check. Stealing another artists work, tracing it, etc. is pretty easy to find and someone here will. Claiming you have been hacked, showing a pet of yours that came from a google search, misrepresenting yourself, etc. will not only get noticed but will effect our trust for you and be embarrassing overall. We will be as proud of your stick figures and burnt grilled cheeses as we would be with a 5 course meal as long as it is something that you made. We will not be proud of being tricked by you. We will remove misrepresentations when we discover them or clarify them, this means that many of the people that have been tricked will become eventually aware of your duplicity.

Posing as Another - posing as another player, claiming to be a RL person that you are not (there id a difference in claiming to live in Canada rather than Maine so you do not share your actual location and claiming to be a doctor and giving out medica advice or claiming to be an internet celebrity), or posing as a staff person is not okay in this community. In fact, posing as a different user or pretending to be a staff person when it is untrue will get you banned.

There is something about ambition, how it not only propels you but also defines you.

Moderated Situations

HiO is a structured community, meaning when you join the site you submit a character for validation. The Validation Team reviews your character to make certain that the character you create is suitable for the community. This means that it is not plagiarized, that the character is a wizard child (first instance of magic, lives in the UK), would be able to enter school (does not have a crippling mental disorder that makes this impossible), lacks the basics one would have to enter a school (ability to read, do math, complete basic schooling be it in an actual school or tutoring), the character adheres to our site rating (we do not allow clear mentions of child abuse, rape, or that the student is a murderer), and that the character adheres to the standards of gameplay (everyone starts at the age of 11, they do not know any spells since everyone starts on an even playing field and have no special abilities or races such as the ones in our racial/ability system pre-validation as we expect users to be fully informed of their decisions when they pick something).

These are examples of moderation. There are certain facets that are expected for the character to be approved.

Once validated, players enter the Sorting Ceremony where they will answer some questions and then be sorted into a house. There are cases where a player is either surprised or disappointed by the house they they were sorted into. There is no randomness to this, this was done in response to the questions that you (or someone using your account and therefore you are responsible for their choices) answered. This is your first moderated instance, you made a choice and there were pre-determined outcomes based on the choice(s) you made. As such, there is no altering this decision once it is made. It does not matter that Pottermore or a similar site told you something else, that you had a preference. This is the essence of moderation.

After you have been sorted, the next step is Registering with Index. When you register with Index they will be seeking an expanded version of your character's story. Index does scrutinize the biography more closely, they look for "at least a few paragraphs" of history and will often request clarification on things that are not clearly spelled out. They are gate-keepers to the setting in a lot of ways and they ultimately seek to make certain that your character fits within the setting. Your character needs to have certain basics such as a homelife (parent or guardian) as well as a place to live (get mail, afford tuition, be in compliance with basic hygiene and laws for care of a minor). Not every home is idyllic, but even people in terrible situations have shelters that they get assistance at for instance. They will ask you to make clarifications or edits to approve your character. This is another form of setting moderation where the staff makes certain people make sense in the community.

After this players pick out their abilities or specialty race. There are applications for this. These applications are in-character, not out of character. As a writer there are lots of great reasons for us to want every one of these abilities, but that is not what we are looking for. What we want to know is how this ability happened/makes sense for your character. If you are a part-Veela for instance, how did that happen? Explain your family tree, how your ancestor's actions affected your own. This is for character development. Yes, we are interested in how these abilities affect you, but that will be reflected in your roleplays as your golden hair or cerulean eyes glint with a lovely ocean-like something or other. They may have questions, they may ask for clarifications or edits and it is possible that you misunderstood how an ability works or fits into the setting. Be as clear as possible. This is another form of moderation in terms of the setting.

After this, players roleplay. When players roleplay they interface with other characters as well as non-player characters (NPCs). Interactions are intended to be driven by player interaction, not NPC, but we realize that NPCs are necessary to reconcile aspects of the setting, reinforce parts of your character and story but they should not be the driving force. When players roleplay they still need to adhere to certain basics:

1.) Their character needs to have a home (so if you kill off your NPC parents) you need to have some sort of parent or guardian. In a normal school if something like this were to happen and a child at a boarding school lost their parents in a freak accident consider what would have been done -- likely social workers would seek guardianship in a distant relative or seek a foster situation for instance.

2.) Your character needs to be going to class or getting tutored if they are not in class to learn the spells that they learn and to graduate to the next year. So if you have hidden yourself away in the woods for several months without being seen or known and have not going to class, there is no way to reconcile the fact that you: one graduated to the next year, and two learned the full curriculum of spells.

3.) Your character's interactions will have consequences. NPCs are not player punching bags and are not intended to be used as targets to be murdered or harmed by your PC without consequence. In fact you are less likely to suffer a consequence with IC player-to-player interactions since often (as logic defying as it is) most acts of stupidity and harm go un(der)reported. To clarify this point -- you cannot murder player characters, there may be characters controlled by the staff for purposes of events that may 'pay the ultimate price' for their crimes which may be at the hands of some players but these instances are rare and often there is a lot more to the story than one initially believes.

4. If you are roleplaying that you are using a potion item, a magical item that we sell in the shop, a specific sort of broom, you need to own (and have) the item in your inventory.

It is not possible with the number of accounts that we have to monitor every single thread and every mention, especially when sometimes problematic choices are not clearly stated but we do make an effort to notice. Being unnoticed for several threads does not make breaking the setting acceptable, the Index staff may reach out to you and request edits to those posts. The above is not an all-inclusive list and there may be some future edits for additional clarity for users. This is again moderation of the community and the setting.

Beyond this is the consideration of MODERATED events. Moderated events differ from normal threads in that there is someone running the thread actively, they act in a role similar to a dungeon master where the direction of the thread and the setting are controlled by a player or staff member. Moderated threads are based on consent. Consent being, nobody can inflict a moderated thread upon you. You will not be forced to enter a moderated thread nor will a thread you are in be forced to become a moderated thread. That said, when you enter a moderated thread you are consenting to moderation. You are not able to elect to 'ignore' rolls that are made or setting adjustments placed by the moderator. Some moderators are very experienced but others are new, some being just players that want to give users something fun to do. Anyone can create a moderated thread but it would need to be CLEARLY defined as such. If a mod is unfair (they are singling you out for example) or wrong (not rolling something correctly) you have the right to reach out to them and discuss this. If the mod is being unfair you can address this with the administration as well. A moderator that has a pattern of consistently making bad calls (intentional or not) may be asked to hold off on making more moderated threads until they can gain more experience as a player and learn from the example of other moderators. If there is proof of intent, as in they intentionally are trying to mess with you, then it is likely that they will be asked to not moderate again. However, this goes both ways. If a player is consistently giving moderators a hard time or they have a history of animosity, moderators have the right to decline moderating for someone. This puts both the moderator and the player at risk for accusations nobody wants to deal with. If a player has a pattern of demanding moderators moderate differently or refusing to abide by the results of a mod, they will be asked to stop entering moderated threads.

Finally, players can deactivate. When you deactivate your character, that character is GONE from the community. They are not being actively moderated by the staff. Their story stopped. Some players will mention an ending for them but they stopped being a part of the community. Players can return to their former character but when they do they will need to reconcile that time lost to be registered in Index. Index's standard does not deviate for reactivated characters, they still need to have what happened during that time they were away approved to be registered in Index. As with roleplaying a character that does something that defies the setting, a reactivated player who has had mentions in threads while deactivated that are not in compliance with the setting will need to be edited.

There is something about ambition, how it not only propels you but also defines you.

Account Deactivations or Leaving the Site

Report Your Absence: Players are able to come and go from the site as they please. We have threads that you an use to let other members know that you will not be around for awhile if it is out of character for you or to simply inform others. While it is not required to post a notification that you will be away from the site, it is considered to be best-practice and best policy to notify others so they are not waiting on you or worried about you.

Playing to your activity level.

We do not have a thread limit, meaning that you can make and join as many threads as you would like. However, please make sure you do not pick more threads than you are able to keep up with. There are certain threads which are moderated and these threads require a level of activity that you need to maintain. Often moderated threads have a time limit such as weekly or every 4 days. Please do not join these threads if you know you will not be able to remain active. Most moderate threads persist for about 2-3 months, so if you do not think you an promise your activity, please do not join a moderated thread. These threads are often balanced according to the number of players present and your sudden failure to contribute would leave the rest of the users in the thread at a disadvantage.

We allow users to Delete and Deactivate their accounts. A player can deactivate their account at any time but they cannot create a new account until they have had their present account for a minimum of 6 months. A user can delete their account at any time, but when you delete your account you delete the record of your presence in this community. We are a community that values transparency, deleting an account would be a security risk for the users in the community because a user might return under the guise of being new. We do not allow this as it would be deceptive and violating to the users. If you hose to delete your account, we will be banning your IPs and you will not be welcome to return to the community in the future.

For members that wish to deactivate their account and return to the community in confidence (in secret), we cannot facilitate you.

If you do decide to deactivate, it is considered to be best practice to "clean house" before you do so. This would include notifying your friends, completing or exiting threads you are engaged in, notifying and leaving any sports teams you may be in (ideally not the eve before a game so they can find a replacement or mid game), and completing the public deactivation form.

In short: If you leave the community, try to communicate effectively with friends and the community members. Do not leave people hanging, try to not worry people. Treat others the way you would like to be treated.

There is something about ambition, how it not only propels you but also defines you.

What Sorted of Things Will Not be Accepted when Making a Character?
  1. Obviously abusive backgrounds. Please remember, we are a PG-13 community. While conflict is a necessary part of a story, we do not want to read about beatings, starvation, psychological abuse or worse.
  2. Relationships with canon characters. This includes no Death Eater parents.
  3. Contradictions to your current story. What do we mean by this? Simply put - if you have always roleplayed that you are German and now you are French, we will not approve of this change. We will approve addendum and clarifications. We will likely approve changes you have not roleplayed (such as perhaps being an only child and not having a school-aged sibling because a real-life friend of yours has joined) but we would expect that you have not been roleplaying as an only child, bringing players to your home where you are an only child. This would be very unfair to those you roleplayed with that they are now forced to recon part of their experience so we will not facilitate this.
  4. Getting married/engaged at an abnormally young age. We are not allowing engagements below 14 or marriages below 16 here.
  5. References to special powers you do not have. In addition, you do not have powers from a different fandom (for example, you are not Elsa from Frozen)
  6. Having family members taking on very specific roles in the wizarding community that there are only one of (for example, your father is not a Minister of Magic).
  7. Information or references that contradict the setting lore.
  8. Aspects about your character or family that you cannot explain. For example -- if you claim your family is very poor, make sure you have a means to explain it. Same thing if your family is very rich. How/why is your family very rich?
  9. There are no orphanages in the modern UK.
  10. Every child has a caretaker/caregiver/parent/guardian. We do not allow homeless children in this setting.
  11. Please make sure that you tie up loose ends. There are no mysteries in the biographies that Index accepts. If you are vague with your parent/backstory/talents you will be asked to give confirmation on what you plan to do. There is no "but I want it to be a mystery". The answer to these staff inquiries do not have to be in the encyclopedia, but the staff needs to know the plans.
  12. We don't allow mafia/clan/samurai characters. Our 11-year-old students are not trained killers, eleven years old are not supposed to even wield sharp objects generally so being a trained killer is a stretch beyond what Index is willing to accept.
  13. We have a pet system, we do not allow you to bring your own pet. However when you have the galleons to buy one, you can claim it was a pet from home (as long as it is one of the pets we allow, you cannot buy a rat and claim it is a pet dragon).
The above is not a fully inclusive list, but these are some of the more common issues that Validators come across.

Submitting Complaints or Concerns to the Administration

On site we have a post report option, this is the exclamation mark that says "report" when you hover over it. This is a way of reporting a post that breaks site rating or site rules. This will ping the entire staff team. If the issue requires more subtlety, you are free to contact any member of staff or the administration to report rule breaks, rating breaks, or instances of harassment.

Off site, we generally only moderate our discord. Meaning that site rating and site rules would be followed on our discord. Our staff actively moderate both discord and the site so most rules infractions will be eventually noticed, but there are cases where we do not see something, understand the context of what happened or our ability to see what happened is somehow obfuscated. The exception to moderating only our site and discord is staff leaks and inappropriate contact with minors. Minors in this community are considered to be those under the age of 18 regardless of the age of consent in your country, their alleged 'want' for the interaction, or if you feel that they are 'very mature'; minors are not considered to be able to give their consent and this is also in accordance with the Discord TOS: Community Standards. Even owls can be reported to the staff so if someone solicits inappropriate content from you as a minor (or not as a minor because it is not appropriate but there will be a difference in my personal rage) you can report it. The Hogwarts staff may (there is no promise of this) also review some fringe extreme cases which would get their own announcement and would represent extreme situations (ex. faking your age to entrap a non-minor in a relationship with a minor is an example), actual human harm (ex. encouraging/pushing someone to harm themself), or criminal activity (ex. selling kids RL drugs in their DMs).

On our server we keep good logs, have witnesses that can be interviewed and beyond giving us context regarding the issue, we are likely able to complete the investigation independently. Still, screen grabs are always appreciated. However, if there is an off-server issue that requires our intervention (this is not drama between users, break-ups, or mean-teen/adult shenanigans -- we have DNC requests for that), Hio will need additional information from you that goes deeper than the basic notion and context of the incident. We are going to need screen shots, dates, logs and evidence relevant to the complaint. For example, if someone who is not a minor is sharing explicit material with a non-minor, we would need evidence that they shared it, the context of the sharing, and evidence that they knew the age(s) of the victims. Often community members think the staff is magical and that we can see everything or that we know everything. Only our characters are wizards, we do not live in your DMs or personal private servers so there will be a burden of evidence and proof that we will ask of you.

Other resources that may be relevant: Discord TOS, Child Protective services and Law Enforcement relevant to your/their region.

There is something about ambition, how it not only propels you but also defines you.
