A Rancid Surprise  PV Evelyn Moore   Closed

Evelyn laughed when Emma started to stroke her chin. It looked so absurd that she couldn't help it. She didn't discredit the wind theory though. Emma was right, it was more likely for it to get knocked to the floor or on somebody's dish then a seat only about a foot wide. Because she felt it was a rhetorical question she didn't answer. She then brought up what they were doing again by giving her full support. Evelyn thought about a moment before shrugging.

"Should we just prank people until we get the right one? It seems a bit mean but I can't think of a better way to find out who did it considering we don't have anything to go off of."

She followed Emma's line of sight towards the door. The dung bomb definitely didn't seem like it was going to dissipate any time soon. There was still the putrid smoke curling around the door frame. Silently she compared it to a dementor and shivered. At least dementors didn't stink five ways to tomorrow.

"Do they have things to get rid of that? Or do they just put on a gas mask and throw it into a trash can?" She shook her head before turning her attention back to Emmal

"I know it looks stupid, why don't you try?" Emma shot back at her as she too laughed. She dropped her hand and nudged her. Putting her hand back up to stroke her chin, she wore a comical face, crossing her eyes and smacking her lips together.

Emma jumped slightly when Evelyn spoke. She had been so concentrated on how to remove the bomb before it's toxic smog spread. The last thing she wanted was to study in the putrid odor, or even worse, inhale it in bed. She returned her focus to Evelyn, who was still deep in thought as she was. It was pretty funny how she could still talk, though not making any commute to eye contact. As she spoke, she mentioned the pranking of people, that would be endless. Conflict and pranking were two strictly different things.

"I think we should collect evidence until we have our culprit." Or until evidence points back to me, or until someone else is convicted... that's fully innocent. Emma shrugged as she thought this last part to herself. "Don't forget we have the dungbomb -" She paused, seeming to be collecting her thoughts. Hopefully, that dissolves. "And we have the note, but... that's pretty much it."

She decided to leave out the part about the Great Hall, for she had been there too. She was sure there were eyewitnesses that had seen her place down the note. If there was one place she was avoiding at the moment, it was there.

Evelyn wasn't sure what the statistics were for that. She guessed it just depended on how windy the day was. The question was probably rhetorical anyway. Instead she shrugged, Emma's laugh was much more interesting anyway. Instead of bringing it up she just stroked her chin much like she did. She tugged at her lip with her thumb and index finger. It exposed her sharp canine teeth. They were something that ran in her family and she unconsciously enjoyed showing them off. Maybe that was why she always adjusted her smile? It didn't matter. Emma was talking about collecting evidence to find the perpetrator.

"Hmm, all this standing is making me tired. Do you want to move away from the corridor to somewhere we can sit down and probably not be assaulted by a putrid smell?" She was right though, all they had were a dung bomb and a note. The dung bomb probably wouldn't be able to tell them anything because who would handle that kind of thing without gloves?

"I don't think we'll be able to get anything from a dung bomb anyway. Unless somebody felt like putting their dorm room number on there then we probably wouldn't find anything. Did you have an idea to get something from it though?" She wanted to make sure before they moved away from the corridor.

Emma looked at Evelyn as she exposed her abnormally sharp teeth, it was pretty cool to her. Though even it did seem a bit odd at first, she adapted to it quickly. Her feet felt as if they were being hardly messaged, though with rocks. She continued to shift her weight from her left foot, then to her right foot. In addition, her bag weighed her down by at least five pounds, but she refused to put it down. Anyone could snatch the bag right up without warning.

Thankfully, Evelyn spoke up. "Hmm, all this standing is making me tired. Do you want to move away from the corridor to somewhere we can sit down and probably not be assaulted by a putrid smell?" She was glad that she had subsequently said something. She had completely overlooked the repugnant odor until she had spoken up.

The brunette fanned the odor away from her, it was the most she could do, though as she moved the putrid odor away, it seemed to be replaced with more. Revolting... Emma thought to herself as she wrinkled her nose.

"With pleasure, did you want to go to the Great Hall or something?" The Ravenclaw merely suggested. She thought about it for a while, the words had sort of slipped out her mouth. "Wait, no, nevermind. The Great Lake?"

She was happy, though mentally when Evelyn said that they couldn't get any evidence from the bomb. An idea popped into her head, making her eyes widen slightly. They could always go to Diagon Alley and go to the shop where she had purchased the items. She doubted that the Weasleys would give two strangers their purchase information. She immediately changed her facial features.

Evelyn would of laughed if she wasn't facing the same problem. Emma was fanning the odor away from her but it seemed to do little to help. Once she gave up with that endeavor she had suggested the great hall. Evelyn was about to agree before she changed her mind and instead said Great Lake. Her body tensed almost immediately. She was quick to shoot that one down.

"No lake."Evelyn snapped, maybe a bit harshly. She scolded herself and added a quiet,"Please."

Instead she gave an alternative option she made up on the spot. "Why don't we go to an empty classroom? That way we can use the black board and chairs freely." She always dreaded water, though it wasn't as bad in clear swimming pools, the Great Lake just reminded her to much of the one back home. It was murky, deep, and home to malevolent magical sea creatures. She would adamantly refuse to go near the water even if she did end up going there with Emma.

In order to feel comfortable she always needed to have a clear line of the water but no easy access to it. Which the Great lake didn't provide; with it's slopping sides but rocky terrain. It was perfect to slip and fall into but you couldn't see where the part of the lake you were near until you were close enough to be dragged in.

"You're right though about the Great Hall not being a good idea. It was the scene of the 'crime'-" The quotation marks were heavily suggested "-and plus there's usually always people in there." She shrugged and waited to see if Emma would agree with her idea or push for the Great Lake.

Emma was taken slightly aback when Evelyn had answered so quickly. She knew from experience if someone answered fast had answered that fast, there was something else behind the story. It made her wonder, but she went with it. She wasn't a very good swimmer herself, but she didn't mind going to the lake.

She didn't want to go to the lake to study? Emma found it handy to smell the freshwater, surrounded by life and the fresh air of the trees. This made her wonder, more than she should have been wondering. In fact, though she couldn't swim that well she still preferred to at least dip her feet in the water.

When Evelyn recommended going to a different classroom, she nodded. What evidence could be found in a classroom, well besides a ton of papers that hadn't been graded yet. She listened as she put an emphasis on the word crime. This made her mentally sweat as her hand suddenly lose all feeling as if she had just sat on it for a lengthy period of time. Was it sarcasm or just a normal weight on the word? The second one seemed unlikely.

What were they going to do inside of the classroom? Was there a reason, had she actually found out the unforgiving truth? She couldn't bear to find out. As long as she showed no signs of noticeability, Emma could stay calm, possibly even normal.

Evelyn nodded back in response to Emma's agreement. While Emma seemed a bit distracted she decided not to comment. Instead she grasped the edge of Emma's sleeve to pull her along. She didn't want her to split off and fall down stairs because she wasn't paying attention. Evelyn probably wasn't strong enough to drag her to the hospital ward. She was more of a don't get hit then hit kind of person. Luckily they probably wouldn't be fighting anybody yet.

Instead she chose to lead them to the nearest classroom she knew was empty. Which happened to be down a couple halls. It was probably used for an upper year class or the like as she didn't recognize anything outside of the standard make up of the classroom. There was a large blackbird, chalk, the teacher's desk and chair, and then the student pews. All of which were empty. She threw herself into the teacher's chair, spinning for a good few feet curled up in the plush seat.

Evelyn enjoyed curling herself up into spaces no matter how big it might be. She had started doing it to make her feel safer and hasn't stopped yet. Once she was sure Emma was inside she lifted her head from it's position burrowed inside her scarf.

"Could you close the door?" That way they would know if they were being followed. While waiting to see if Emma obeyed her request she scooched the chair around the table onto the side closer to the pews. Luckily the teacher desk was void of any documents or knickknacks. So if Emma wanted to perch on that instead they wouldn't risk knocking anything off.

Emma picked up her feet as she was pulled by the sleeve to an anonymous location. She hadn't noticed that she was standing still for an unremarkable amount of time. She didn't see the need to, for the next available classroom was merely down the hall. She really didn't believe she was that out of focus from reality.

It was a classroom she hadn't really noticed, maybe it was one of those classrooms for people with advanced magic. It was the least of her problems at the moment. She looked at the chalkboard and the empty seats before deciding to take a seat the farthest away from the door. In school case's this was the spot she would dread, but in this case, she wanted to linger as far away from the entrance as she probably could.

The brunette watched as Evelyn spin in the chair absentmindedly. It looked like she was having more fun than she should have been having. She looked at the green colored chalkboard, most chalkboards where supposed to be gray, but the green chalkboard gave the classroom a happy feeling. The dullness seemed to disappear with the board.

It had not occurred to her to shut the door behind her, well not unless till Evelyn has spoken up. Emma shut the door behind, she figured it was because of the foul odor that could seep into the room at any given moment.

"What are we going to do here?" She asked curiously as she took the same seat at the back of the room.

Emma had chosen to sit with the student chairs on the far left. Which was fine, she just scooted closer so that there wasn't a meter of space between them. That way conversing would be easier. She felt bad for asking Emma to get up again after sitting down. But Emma had brought up a good point, she had no idea what to do now though. Maybe brainstorming would help? She brought up the idea to Emma.

"We could Brainstorm to find possible solutions. You know, like the mind maps your tutor makes you do to help your memory recall as part. But instead of using paper we have a giant chalk board that looks like somebody was bored and took a paint can to it. If you have a better idea though I'm all open. It's just a thought because I really didn't think of what we were going to do once we got a home base."

Evelyn shrugged. It was the best she could come up with. Maybe Emma had a good plan they could roll with? That way they could skip the entire process of sleuthing. Not that she didn't mind doing it, there was just more of a chance of getting caught. And that would be a bad thing for their records. While she didn't know what Emma wanted to do after Hogwarts, she knew that a criminal record wouldn't help her chances of getting into the ministry.

Emma sat down asperated as she took in the smell of fresh air mixed with the redolence of the pages of a dated history book. Looking at the chalkboard, it made her cringe. Some parts of the board were covered in the powdery white substance, others were stainless. A part of her wanted to go and dirty up the board, making it even with the rest. The other aspired to clean it until you couldn't see a dollop of chalk anywhere.

The chair didn't make it any better. It was enveloped in jagged wood, making it look like no student had even sat there in a few years. It was most likely one of the chairs that you got sent to by the Professor for bad behavior. Professors just wanted to see a splinter being shoved up their robes.

Evelyn had spoken about the brainstorming of the 'perpetrator', though she would have never called herself this, in this case. She recalled the 'spider webs' she was forced to draw in kindergarten to develop a thought completely.

"That sounds great, did you want to start?" Emma asked her eyes looking at Evelyn and then to the board, she obviously wanted to get it over with as soon as possible.

Evelyn hadn't actually planned out what she should write. So Emma has a good point. Almost reluctantly she slid out of her chair and touched down onto the ground. Her end of her scarf stabilized with gravity. Though Emma seemed to have lost some of her enthusiasm Evelyn didn't want to disappoint her. Even if she wasn't all that interested in finding the culprit itself. Right now she was much more into spending time with Emma and deepening a blossoming friendship.

Brainstorming was always fun though. So she rummaged around the desk to find chalk and came up with one of those broken off stubs that were always discarded into an obscure drawer. Her handwriting was quick and loopy yet she still managed to create almost perfect circles when circling them.

The first word she put on the board was culprit, then student, and so on. It devolved into a cluttered board with absolutely nothing to show for it. She huffed with mildly covered irritation. After dropping the chalk into the appropriate holder she slid into her chair.

"Is it even worth it? We're not getting anywhere and I think we've been talking for almost an hour." She swirled around the chair and closed her eyes. Another yawn causing her to clench her jaw. Not even mind maps could make this as fun as she thought it would be.

Emma watched as Evelyn scribbled a couple of circles on the chalkboard followed by the two words, the first one she absolutely dreaded. She really didn't think a simple brainstorm could solve the 'mystery' they had been working on. Still, it was an oddly satisfying scenario to see everything planned out so neatly, it was like visual ASMR.

When Evelyn had finally stopped writing on the now white chalkboard, Emma watched as she sunk back into the seat reserved for the teacher. She had felt Evelyn's aura, even from the back of the classroom. It was a bit tedious, absolutely a time-waster. She shifted herself in the rugged seat and sat on her leg, causing the blood to stop slightly.

The brunette's eyes locked with the ceiling, then back to the Hufflepuff when she spoke. "Is it even worth it? We're not getting anywhere and I think we've been talking for almost an hour." She felt a bit badly, almost even guilty for keeping her here. Maybe it was time to tell her, she couldn't hide it inside of her forever.

She took a deep breath and sighed, unprepared for the upcoming events. "Look, before you say anything bad, I don't want to be enemies, or even 'frenemies' ...even." Emma stammered a bit putting in the last part, hopefully, it was going well. She reached in her pocket to pull a sealed box, in which she had been keeping the gloves she'd used. She popped open the glove and used her left hand to fan her nose once again.

"Surprise?" Emma smiled guiltily, though parts of embarrassment could be shown throughout her face.

Evelyn didn't even feel angry at her. That was so outstandingly awesome that she pulled it off!

"You're like James Bond! Kinda, I don't even feel mad since it's you. How'd you sneak that thing onto compass? Isn't it contraband or something? I can't imagine the professors not snatching it up like a honey bun fresh out of the oven. Any particular reason you decided to prank though. There was no promise that somebody would show."

She pulled herself out of the chair. It took a moment for the blood to return to her legs, but when it did she dropped herself a few chairs beside Emma. She would have sat closer but there was no guarantee that the thing isn't smelling anymore. After getting hit once it was an experience she didn't want to chance getting the smell on her again. Even if it will probably wash off the next time she does the laundry.

Evelyn brought her legs up to the chest and blinked. Another thought had came to her. "Do you do this often? Pranking I mean? You're blushing like crazy but I can't tell if that's because you got caught or if the smell's going to your head. If it is we should probably throw that away. Achieving entertainment is no reason for you to sacrifice your health unless you have the explicit intention to do so ahead of time." She hit the palm of her hand with the base of her fist to emphasis her point.

Emma seemed taken aback by the fact that Evelyn hadn't overreacted like... other victims at both London and Hogwarts. She took the time to widen her smile, though this seemed to open up her airways more than she would have suspected. It was easier to smile while inhaling than to exhale, she had proven this twice, though occasionally she still forced herself to do so.

"I'm pretty sure it's not illegal, I mean I checked the school's rule, I didn't see anything against it. At least I think. Anyway, I honestly decided to pick a table aimlessly... and well, set it down at a random spot, though I wish I would have picked a jerk, they overreact.. more than you'd think. This was way better though, no offense." Emma cleared up.

She saw Evelyn magically gain the enthusiasm she had known her for. She put the herbology gloves back in the box and slipped it into her pocket. The horrid smell was going to stay on her hands for a long time, so she'd probably be going off the hook.

Emma tilted her head to look at the ceiling, though her eyes flickered to the ground. She did do it more than usual, but not often, once a month usually did the group to uplift her throughout the month. It would be something that she could look back to when she was to be found sad.

"I mean... not a lot, oh and besides, I like getting caught. Most of the time, I do not know why, but it just makes things sort of interesting, you know? I do most things unaccompanied, well you kind of knew that." She fanned her nasal area in the attempt to cover her cheeks and to relocate the odor. She laughed when Evelyn punched her own hand, though she had to admit it was a bit threatening. "It's fine, I'll get rid of it soon."
