The lovely Anastasia Beckett was ready for a break from her family. Somehow, the two days she had spent with her aunt and uncle were the longest days ever. Between preparations for the Gala and the fact that nothing Ana did seemed to please them, things had been tense. Ana had hardly helped matters by spitefully storming out of the house and buying a yacht within two hours of arriving home. Was it December in England, meaning Ana had no possible uses for a yacht for months? Absolutely. Still, that hadn't stopped her. The amount of money that she had inherited from her great aunt, mother, and father was quite honestly more than she could ever spend. Not that she wasn't going to try.

She had bought diamond necklaces or similarly extravagant presents for most of her friends, and Abella's family wasn't to be the exception. In addition to her overnight bag, she had a bag full of presents, most of which she had shrunk so that she would be able to have them all with her when she flooed. She had done her best to select the best gifts she could find with the limited time she had to work with since she hadn't had much time to shop before the break. She had managed to find necklaces that she hoped Abella and her daughter (although the daughter was a gamble seeing as she had no idea who Abella's daughter was) would like, a lovely painting set for Scout, and some whiskey that the salesman had assured her was the very best for Abella's husband. And, of course, a lovely bunch of red and white roses to go with the holiday theme. Ana wasn't overly fond of roses, quite the opposite really with all that had happened at the Blossom Ball, but these had been the ones that had suited the occasion the best.

Following another argument regarding the guestlist for the Gala, more specifically, the people that Ana had added, Ana had gathered her things and prepared to floo. Generally, she didn't wear a coat or sunglasses inside, but seeing as it was winter and she didn't want the floo powder in her eyes, she was. With a tense, cool farewell to her aunt and uncle, Ana tossed a handful of powder into the perfectly clean fireplace, then stepped in, bags in hand. "Merlin's Footrest, Isle of Dogs," she said, enunciating clearly. She had flooed a thousand times before, although this was the first time she had done so by herself. She tucked her elbows in and closed her eyes as the green flames shot up.

She was pleased with herself for wearing sunglasses since there was no small amount of soot now clinging to her. She began to dust herself off after placing the sunglasses on her head. She was determined to be the best houseguest that Abella had ever had the pleasure of hosting, and that began with not tracking soot into her living room. Once she was satisfied with her cleanliness, she stepped out and her eyes darted around the room, trying to make certain she had ended up in the right place. She froze when she saw a familiar figure. Well, shit...

Wait by the fire, her mom had said.

We're expecting a special guest, her dad had said.

Yeah, whatever. Her mother's continually furtive glances towards the fireplace and the guest bedroom door were freaking her out a little bit, along with her obsessive wiping of one particular spot on the counter, but Ami really didn't have the heart to tell her mother that she already knew that their "special guest" was actually Anastasia freaking Beckett. Maybe a couple of months ago, she would've placed all the blame for her and Scott's falling out on Ana, but now she just felt a little guilty for treating the girl the way she had. Still, that didn't mean that she needed to be nice to the Gryffindor, right?

"Bell-boo, honey, you're gonna wear a hole into that counter." Ami made a gagging noise as she heard her dad's voice from the kitchen, having forgotten for a brief moment what a simp her father was. Still, she paused from scrolling through TikTok on her phone to try and listen in to her parents' conversation. "I don't understand why you're so stressed," Lucas said in what he probably thought was a quiet voice, although the man was anything but quiet. It was a curse that he had passed on to his daughter, a curse that Ami was reminded of all too often in the Library. "I thought you said this was one of Ami's school friends? I'm excited to meet a girl, for once..."

"Dear, Ami has plenty of school friends who aren't Scott. She went to the London Quidditch match with that darling Campbell girl, remember? No, it's... Ana isn't-"

The rest of her mother's sentence was cut off by the whooshing of the fireplace. Ami quickly turned her phone off, sliding it into the back pocket of her jeans, and then taking it back out again just as quickly. It's just Beckett... no big deal. You're cooler than to wait for her, hand and foot, she thought to herself, scrolling through a news article she had absolutely no intention of reading. She could hear an excessive amount of patting coming from the fireplace (was Ana trying to make sure her butt had come with her as well?) as well as her mother rushing to go get Scout from her office.

"Ami, why don't you introduce me to your friend, here?" Finally, after a good few awkward seconds, Ami glanced up from her phone, glancing at her father, who had rolled into the living room, and then the girl standing in front of the fireplace.

"She's not my friend," she said sullenly, tucking her phone into her back pocket and standing up, looking everywhere but at Ana. "She's mom's friend. Beckett, my dad. Dad, Anastasia Beckett."

"Erm... um... well, hi, Anastasia, it's very nice to meet you." Inching forward just slightly in his wheelchair, Lucas extended a beefy hand for Ana to shake. It was clear to see where Ami had gotten her genes from- she was the spitting image of her father, although Lucas had a bushy beard and much more intimidating and filled out muscles than his daughter. "Please, though, just call me Lucas- Abella, that's my wife, as you know, she thinks it ages me when you youngins call me Mr. Procoppio, and I couldn't agree more. Ope- let me get that for ya..." The blanket covered his lap shifted slightly as he reached forward to take Ana's overnight bag from her, the strap of it looking hilariously tiny in his giant paw.

"Anaaa!"

Ami groaned audibly as Scout tumbled into the living room, falling flat on his face at Ana's feet. Bouncing back up again with the tiniest of yelps, the blond infant reached up and tugged at Ana's hand, beaming widely at her with his tiny baby pearly whites. "Ana!" he cooed, a bit of drool trailing from the corner of his mouth. And finally, Abella made her way into the living room, engulfing Ana in a tight hug for a few seconds before stepping back a smiling kindly at her.

"Ana, darling, I'm so glad you could join us, even it's only for a few days," she gushed, gently tucking a stray piece of Ana's hair back behind her ear. "I see you've er, seen Ami-" No response. "-and my husband-" Lucas waved from behind his wife. "-and... and Scout." "Ana!"

"Ami, love, could you show Ana to the guest bedroom? Ana, it's probably a lot smaller than you're used to, but... well, it's a London flat, and a Muggle one at that. Nothing here can really compare to the Manor... Just let me know if you need more space somewhere and I can probably transfigure some things around."

Snatching Ana's overnight bag from her dad's hand, Ami stormed out of the living room, past the kitchen, and down another hallway. Unlike many other wizarding residences, Merlin's Footrest wasn't magically expanded; cold, hard muggle money had bought this square footage. The guest bedroom was, in fact, remarkably normal sized, if a bit on the smaller side. Nearly kicking the door open, Ami slammed it shut behind Ana, flinging her bag of belongings onto the bed across the room (which was a pretty impressive feat within itself).

"We need to establish a couple of ground rules," she said, glaring at the Gryffindor. "It's real fucking weird that you're friends with my mom, of all people. but you are going to be on your absolute best behavior. You will treat Scout with respect. You will be charming and eloquent and bear with my dad's questions about whatever pureblood bullshit you grew up with. And you will not comment about my dad's wheelchair. Got it?"

Surely someone would there would find Ana's remarkably bad luck amusing. Certainly not Ana, but someone. While Ami was marginally more pleasant than Ana's family, she wasn't remotely someone that Ana would have opted to spend her holiday with. Mostly because she wanted to smack her.

The silence felt like it went on for ages although it was likely a few seconds at most. "Oh, I'm not her friend," Ana said at the same time as Ami spoke, albeit significantly more politely.

The man was in a wheelchair, which Ana made an effort not to stare at. She was sure she'd seen a person with a wheelchair at some point or another, but certainly not recently. Apparently, they were more common in the Muggle world, due to the lack of healing spells.

Ana smiled winningly with Ami's father and shook his outstretched hand. This was fine, right? She was fantastic with adults that she wasn't related to. "Lovely to meet you as well, Lucas," she replied, trying to ignore Ami. Calling an adult by their first name felt spectacularly relaxed and quite honestly wrong to the young heiress. Growing up, if she called any adult anything other than their proper title, she'd be scolded within an inch of her life.

"Oh, thank you," she said as he took her bag. "And thank you for allowing me to intrude upon your holiday." Her focus shifted as Scout made a rather spectacular, if not entirely graceful entrance. She beamed back at him. While she was generally good with adults, she had no idea how to interact with small children. She had been raised an only child and was the youngest of her cousins. The events her parents brought her along to rarely had anyone under the age of 30, much less small children.

The hug from Abella made Ana feel as though she had just finished a perfectly hot cup of coffee and also made a small part of her want to cry. Their family was so drastically different from her own and the cold pureblood families she had grown up around. "Oh, I'm so delighted to come," Ana told Abella brightly.

"Oh, please don't worry yourself on my account, I'm sure it's perfectly lovely," Ana said. Truth be told, she hated the Manor. Hated its museum-like quiet. Hated how big it was. Hated how much it reminded her of a crypt. She'd happily take a shoebox over her massive room. Her dorm at school had far less space, and she would choose that over her perfect-looking bedroom a thousand times. Seeing Abella fret over her only made Ana feel even warmer inside. Any bedroom her parents set up was precisely to their wants and ideas of what she ought to desire with no concern for what she might want or need to be comfortable. "I really don't require that much space."

With a quick smile to the adults and Scout, Ana followed Ami out. The flat seemed so lived in and comfortable compared to Ana's own home. The moment the door shut, Ana arched an eyebrow at Ami as if daring her to speak.

"Lovely to see you too," Ana said dryly as Ami launched into a deranged rant. "First off, I'll have you know that I am charming, respectful, and eloquent at all times." She threw in a wink here. "And secondly, I'm not an idiot, of course, I'm not going to remark upon your father's wheelchair." After a few moments, she added on. The sarcastic tone had faded slightly and was replaced by something more akin to longing. "Is your family always like this?"
