Well the summer had been odd to say the least. Well first, out with the obvious. Wyatt didn’t expect his mom to die, it seemed to come out of nowhere, but when he thought about it enough he almost thought he was at fault for not confronting her about her smoking habit. Well… not exactly almost thought. He definitely thought it was his fault, but that mess was only the beginning of the worst summer he’d ever had.
Soon after the passing of his mother, he was scooped up by his enemy’s mother and stayed at the home of his arch nemesis the rest of the summer. Maybe they didn’t stay enemies for long but it was still awkward for the most part, and time seemed to pass so slowly there. Wyatt still hadn’t written a single word in that journal the therapist gave him about two months ago, but why did Wyatt feel the need to be in a rush?
Currently, Alec was packing up for Hogwarts, and it was a miracle his parents were even allowing him to go back after what Wyatt did when he was locked out of the house. Wyatt assumed it was because Alec’s mother wasn’t so interested in caring for Alec an entire year. The Gryffindor was sort of angsty all the time, so who can blame her, really. Wyatt had already packed, all of his stuff had been in suitcases all summer long.
It was pretty early, they had to get to the train by… eleven? Something like that. It was a strange feeling. Wyatt had been waiting for the summer to end since he’d arrived at the Masons’ house, and now he wasn’t so thrilled he’d be gone in an hour or so? What was that even supposed to mean? Wyatt had always sort of considered his own feelings an attack on his pride. And he called Alec a psychopath? Ridiculous…
Wyatt had been sitting on the bed in silence for a while, looking up at the corner of Alec’s room which had a little cobweb in the corner. It was a little too quiet, something Wyatt began to hate. Quiet always used to be comfortable, it was nice and safe. Now when the rest of the world was quiet, Wyatt’s thoughts were the loudest things on the planet, and he had to deal with that. Peace didn’t really exist anymore.
After finally looking away from the abandoned spider web, Wyatt asked, “Have you seen Cookie recently?”
He knew the answer would be no.

Alec had found himself starting to pack two hours earlier. It gave him something to do. To clear his mind so he didn't have to think. He didn't want to. But as he fell into his head more and more, his thoughts consuming him he began to slow down. And that's why so far it had taken to this long. Far too long to be packing. Far too long to be doing anything. Sketching didn't even sound very appealing to him right now. That was definitely a first.
Alec's summer had but nothing but horrible. There were some good moments. But overall it'd been a mess. All of his stuff used for sketching was shoved under his bed to the far back. He hadn't taken any of it out since he'd shown Wyatt his sketches. A whole summer lacking sketches. What a lack of an excuse for what could've been great sketches[Except when he sketched Wyatt that one time but also sort of forgot he did that.].
Alec just didn't want Wyatt to see him sketching. Even after he'd gotten compliments for it. Alec assumed Wyatt felt the same about his guitar as well though. Even while the song that was played on it was lovely. Those were nice moments.. But Alec pushed those aside in favor to be annoyed that this whole summer had gone wrong. With a way of somehow dealing with the fact that their[Clifton, Leo, And Alec] trio.. Wasn't going to be a trio. Since.. Well, Clifton wasn't coming back to school that year.
Eventually while Alec was still packing, he decided he better bring his journal. In case he got any random ideas for SOATOP stuff at school again. Or simply just wanted to write how his day had gone. Nobody was ever going to see the contents of it, anyway. Alec reached under his bed grabbing the journal putting it under the rest of his things and at the bottom of the trunk. Alec was about to look back at his list to see what else he needed to pack when.
Wyatt began to speak. “Have you seen Cookie recently?” Alec looked over at him. It reminded him about their sort of debate about ants when Alec not so stealthily talked about probably being the one to give Cookie his final demise.
“I’m as much as a supporter of ants rights as the next guy, but there’s a reason the human race hasn’t been taken over by the ants of the Earth, Alec.”
The words rung through Alec's head. There were things that were going to stick with Alec for a long while after this. As stupid as this sounded. Those words were going to be one of those things that did. Wyatt didn't know Cookie was actually dead, though. Did he? Alec hadn't come out right away saying it. It felt very obvious, though. Alec shrugged. "Not really. Probably with his spider family or something. Maybe their on vacation" Alec suggested. Yes, Alec knew spiders didn't go on vacation. It still didn't stop him from suggesting it now though, did it? "Why ask?" Alec asked, turning to look over at Wyatt. Sitting down on his own bed, taking a break from packing.
The silence had been helping Alec sort thought his thoughts. But it seemed as if Wyatt had a lot on his mind as well. "Excited to go back to Hogwarts?" He asked. But saying it felt more like asking, 'Are you excited to now not have to deal with me. And how crazy. And stupid I can be' Alec was trying to push past the whole Clifton thing, leaving it to deal with later so he could just hype himself up for school. It edged at him, though. Things were going to be a lot different now. And not just with Clifton not being there.
"You know, we are terrible enemies. I need to step up my game on the enemy part if we wanna actually be ones. Upon going back to Hogwarts." Alec said. And this was just more saying it without actually saying it. 'I've wasted my whole summer on you[Because I've had to]. And now were sort of friends. And I do not want to go back to Hogwarts to us having to act like enemies. And it being very awkward.' Yes. If it wasn't obvious, Alec was in a bad mood. While attempting to be in a good one. It was complicated. But again, was there something that was ever not complicated? The summer sure had almost taken top tier for complicated.

"Not really. Probably with his spider family or something. Maybe they’re on vacation," Wyatt lightly rolled his eyes. "Why ask?" Alec inquired as he sat on his bed. Being a horrifyingly good liar, Wyatt just put on his neutral face and said, “no reason. Just thinking.” Though he really wanted to tell Alec about how that green snake from a bit ago actually lived under Wyatt’s bed for a short time and ate the spider.
Alec asked a question that would maybe make sense to the Gryffindor, but not for Wyatt. "Excited to go back to Hogwarts?" Wyatt chuckled. “Hell no. The only reason I’m going back to Hogwarts is because there’s nowhere else I can go.” Well, he could go back to Cokeworth, and stay in the boys’ home with Finn and Oliver, but they were quite annoying… And Cokeworth’s air would probably ruin his lungs if he breathed it in for another few years.
Hogwarts was pretty awful for the most part. Yes, magic. Brilliant. Except for when it’s being used to toss you into a lake without your attacker even having to be near you. Maybe it was Wyatt who picked most of the fights. Maybe it was Wyatt who would hurl insults at the bullies while they bullied him. Maybe Wyatt did call that one Gryffindor’s girlfriend a bobble-head. But he never threw the first punch. Or any punch.
Of course that was except for the time he beat up Alec. And that was kicking. Speaking of Alec… "You know, we are terrible enemies. I need to step up my game on the enemy part if we wanna actually be ones. Upon going back to Hogwarts." Wyatt frowned slightly. Was Alec joking? After the whole summer, Alec wanted to be enemies? Wyatt just chalked it up to Alec being in a bad mood for some reason. His tone was very Wyatt Starkey.
Wyatt replied with a question, “Do we have to be enemies? It takes quite a lot of energy to have a nemesis.” Wyatt ran a hand through his hair. “Y’know once we’re back, we could just not talk to each other for the rest of our lives. Then we don’t have to make the decision to be friends or go back to being enemies. Besides, it’d be much better for you if you were never seen around me.”
The rumors spread about Wyatt toward the end of the year ruined anyone who was caught doing so much as sharing notes with the Slytherin. Have one conversation with Wyatt and you’d know how awful he thinks blood-purists are, but if you just saw him walk by, you’d think he is one. It also didn’t help that his mother’s parents were quite popular among blood-purist pure-blood families.
Someone started a rumor that he was related to death eaters and was practicing dark magic and he hasn’t heard the end of it quite yet. It was nice sometimes. Fewer people would sit near him or talk to him, and some didn’t even look at him in fear they’d be cursed or something. Other times it was less nice. The rowdy Gryffindors who’d push him around were only fueled by these rumors. It was crazy to Wyatt how anyone believed the stories though.

By the end of Alec asking his questions. His smile had faltered. It was either because attempting to hype himself up hadn't worked. Or maybe it was partially Wyatt's answers to Alec's questions dragging Alec deeper into his thoughts. Alec's wouldn't want to be going back to Hogwarts if it weren't for the fact that Leo was there. And that he also liked the break getting away from his drama filled household. Yeah, education was important. But so far it'd ranked as one of the more less important aspects of everything.
Alec got pretty okay grades. He certainly wasn't an O student. But he made an attempt to get good grades. Alec made sure to study quite a bit for his schoolwork too. Just a lot of it was more of the fact he had a hard time staying focused during the lesson. Alec would get distracted by one thing or another instead of what he was actually supposed to be doing. Even while he'd been trying to pay attention. And things would simply just go downhill from there.
"I dunno. It'd be weird not to talk after a summer like this." Alec said eventually. "I guess pretending like it happened isn't much of an option either, though." He said stating the obvious. "And I'm sure the amazing Wyatt Starkey. Wouldn't go as low as take a hit on his pride and be friends with a Gryffindor." Sarcasm trailed the young lion's voice as he spoke. Were Alec's words hurtful? He wasn't sure. He wasn't even sure the intent of his words. What did he think he'd get out of saying these things? He had no clue. Was their truth to Alec's words? Alec felt as if there was. Maybe he would've been more insightful on what he was saying if he hadn't just let it slip out of his mouth. It took a while before Alec spoke again. Seconds after his last sentence he looked ready to just stopping talking to Wyatt and finish up with his packing, but instead Alec sat there.
"Are we going to talk about what happened the night I locked you out?" Alec asked, getting to the point. "Or are we just going to keep on avoiding the topic?" He asked. It was frustrating. Alec had questions. Lots of them. And he believed a lot of his questions very rightfully deserved answers. Alec took over half the blame on himself for what happened. Since it wouldn't have happened if Alec wasn't being such a prat. And decided he was going to lock Wyatt outside of the house because he was upset with him. The whole outburst back when they were with Clifton had been enough. But the least Wyatt could do is give Alec some answers.
There was obviously a lot he wasn't saying. "In return I'll answer some of your questions" Alec offered finally. "I have no idea what you'd ever want to ask me. I'm practically an open book. But there's some sort of offer now, " He said. And with that, he waited for Starkey's response.

"I dunno. It'd be weird not to talk after a summer like this. I guess pretending like it happened isn't much of an option either, though." It had taken an entire summer for Alec to start saying things that made sense, Wyatt noted. "And I'm sure the amazing Wyatt Starkey. Wouldn't go as low as take a hit on his pride and be friends with a Gryffindor." Wyatt decided to give a pretty serious reply to Alec’s sarcasm.
“We both know I could handle it, Alec, but you’re the sweet, quiet Gryffindor. If your little friends saw you have a slightly amicable conversation with me you’d be dumped in the lake whenever they could catch you.” Maybe that was a little harsh… "Are we going to talk about what happened the night I locked you out?" Alec asked, changing the subject, but changing it to a valid question. "Or are we just going to keep on avoiding the topic?"
Alec seemed quite frustrated from what Wyatt could tell. His frustration was nothing compared to Wyatt’s though, who was happy that the two had been avoiding the topic for some time. What was worse, that night had so much going on, Wyatt didn’t know what exactly Alec was asking about. Mason could be thinking about how Wyatt talked to a snake just as much as he could be confused about why the Slytherin hit his head on the ground a few times.
Alec spoke up again. "In return I'll answer some of your questions." Wyatt didn’t have any questions for Alec, really. Wyatt had observed enough from living with the boy for the past couple months or so. "I have no idea what you'd ever want to ask me. I'm practically an open book. But there's some sort of offer now." Alec was correct, interestingly enough. The Gryffindor was quite the open book, but there was one thing Wyatt wasn’t sure about.
For the past few days, Alec seemed really down and Wyatt didn’t know why. He felt like he needed to know. Not to comfort Alec or anything! Merlin, no, but for… research? Yeah, research… whatever. Wyatt crossed his arms. “I’ve already told you everything that happened, but if you somehow have more questions, you may ask.” Wyatt wasn’t sure how ready he was for this conversation.
That night was… a lot. He was beaten up pretty badly, and got a new scar on his arm, right under the one his dad left him years ago. Wyatt also stuttered in front of his attackers, like a baby, and the boys who beat him up weren’t so nice about it either. The boys also took his mother’s necklace. Alec found Wyatt on the ground, bloody, bruised, and cut up. At the time, Wyatt didn’t care, but looking back, he felt incredibly embarrassed.

Alec ignored Wyatt's words, moving on in an instant. They'd had enough arguments. It wasn't time to make things worse. So instead he thought it a more reasonable decision to trail forward with the snake thing. The words "No, you haven't" came rushing out of Alec's mouth right away. Well, that's defeats the point of watching your words now, doesn't it?
"You can't just say that. And act as if I was oblivious about it." Alec said. "Are you going to tell me what the deal with the snake is? I have eyes Wyatt." Alec folded his arms across his chest frowning. "I gave you a pass the first time because it seemed like this one was going to be a hard topic to explain. That and I just didn't really care at the time." Alec said. "But obviously the snake and you are frequents?" Alec asked. "You know it's pretty hard to ignore watching you run back all the way where I walked you from. Just to get to a snake." He said. "Yeah, snakes are cool, but-Was it really that important?" Alec asked. He stopped, folding his arms across his chest with a sigh.
Was that snake really important enough to make a very injured Wyatt practically run back to it? And Why did Alec have to be left in the middle of it? You know if he hadn't checked up on Wyatt to see where he was. Alec would've never known that night. And the idea of not knowing so he didn't have to deal with any of this mess sounded pleasing. Alec almost wasn't going back to Hogwarts because of this. He wouldn't have cared if it just meant his mom was going to ignore him for the rest of the year. And his dad was going to be furious with him. He'd already dealt with it a lot. And it wasn't like that wasn't going to happen either way. Because it was. No matter what Alec did.
Only did the stakes of everything matter when Hogwarts was brought into question. While any good parent probably would've pulled their child out of Hogwarts after hearing everything happened there either way. He supposed that wasn't something to put onto stakes anyway since well.. No parent that had gone to Hogwarts before their kid did and didn't die would care. Because they knew what Hogwarts had to offer with all those crazy mishaps. And hey they didn't die! So I mean It's probably safe. Maybe it was also meant what you viewed as a threat.
Alec let his gaze focus on the floor while pulling himself out of his thoughts. His mind was rambling on again about something that was less important to the situation at hand. "Another thing as well. Why didn't you listen to me? Don't you think there's a reason I told you not to go? I wasn't just saying it Wyatt." Alec said speaking before Wyatt had had the chance to reply to what he had said earlier. Alec actually looked as if he had a lot more he wanted to say. And he looked like he was going to. But before he could get anything else out of his mouth, he decided to wait for Wyatt's replies first.

“I’ve already told you everything that happened, but if you somehow have more questions, you may ask.”
"No, you haven't."
The words came out of Alec’s mouth before Wyatt was even finished with his sentence, as if the Gryffindor had been waiting to say them. Wyatt had a feeling he had been. "You can't just say that. And act as if I was oblivious about it." Alec said, clearly pissed. "Are you going to tell me what the deal with the snake is? I have eyes Wyatt." Wyatt didn’t have a suitable answer for the Lion, so he just crossed his arms tighter and remained silent, avoiding direct eye contact.
Alec folded his arms across his chest frowning, almost mirroring Wyatt. "I gave you a pass the first time because it seemed like this one was going to be a hard topic to explain. That and I just didn't really care at the time. But obviously the snake and you are frequents? You know it's pretty hard to ignore watching you run back all the way where I walked you from. "Another thing as well. Why didn't you listen to me? Don't you think there's a reason I told you not to go? I wasn't just saying it Wyatt."
Wyatt waited patiently until Alec was finished, mostly because he didn’t exactly know what to say. “Well- I…” He stammered pathetically, then mentally kicked himself for talking before he had a sentence at the ready. “I- I wanted to know what it meant. Seeing the snake again… and I felt crazy and I- I just… thought it was a sign… of something. It was just me going insane.” That was the best lie he could come up with apparently.
Usually he was such a good liar. What was happening? The Slytherin wasn’t even one to believe in signs from the universe, or fate, or anything like that. Alec would be a fool not to notice that. Wyatt looked at the ground, much like Alec had earlier. Without looking up, he answered Alec’s second question before the Lion could say anything.
“I was… drawn to that side of the neighborhood. It felt...” Wyatt had given up on lying at that point, and decided to tell the truth, hoping Alec would forget about his previous lie. He let the sentence drift away. He didn't want to say that it felt familiar, like home. Alec would have too many questions then.

Alec felt as if their were a million things swirling on around in just his head. I was hard, it was really hard to just focus on one. What did Wyatt mean by that? Truly, what did he mean by anything though? He was, well, very confusing to Alec. Wyatt could be really nice when he wanted to be. Other times was the in between odd for the both parties, it was when they both actually got serious. Sides of Wyatt he had still yet to see came and went in little peaks like when Wyatt was somehow able to crack a smile asking if he looked scary, or the time he played guitar for Alec then again that incident was also mostly because he wanted to see the boy's art. And then of course the far off cold and passive Wyatt. What was his deal?
It seemed to be a resting personality but it always off put Alec, how naturally Wyatt could play things off even with a million lights flickering in his mind. And now he'd just made an attempt to play it off. There was more than that.. Wyatt Starkey would never think he was going crazy in such a way and Alec knew it. Wyatt knew the snake. There was no denying it. But why was it so important? And why did Alec feel so drawn to finding out? He wasn't no muggle detective, anyway. Wasn't like Wyatt would go straight fo-"I was… drawn to that side of the neighborhood. It felt..."
That was an answer, half an answer, but an answer. Wyatt trailed off at the end, but Alec paid no mind to it and nodded, going the empathetic route inside. "Curiosity killed the cat." Right on cue Alec said it, obviously the universe's way of telling him he was meant to say it. This also got Alec thinking about Wyatt's mother's necklace? Where was it now.. Had the boy taken it and destroyed it? Sold it for a pretty penny? Surely if Alec looked hard enough, he'd be able to find it through newspaper ads or even the help of his older sister. It might be the only thing she'd ever help Alec with since she owed him a favor, but Alec didn't care. Alec had taken notice to the fact that Wyatt had seemed to miss it. Maybe once found it could be a gift. One to make up for this terrible summer.
"More complicated than that, but the words explain enough. I'm sorry, I'm just unable to wrap my head around it. It's probably just me being stupid at this point for caring so much. But-You were hurt Wyatt. And you walked all the way back over there. What would've happened if I had decided to leave you there, Wyatt? I-I can't believe I was actually considering it but.. Imagine how much more hurt you would've been if my parents hadn't been able to get to you as soon as they did." Alec said, running a hand through his hair. "Forget that I said that, I say too much." Alec mumbled before sighing and beginning to speak again "You want your lame end of the deal now?" Alec asked in an amused way to lighten the mood.

The sentence played again and again in his head, like a broken record. "What would've happened if I had decided to leave you there, Wyatt?" You should’ve, Wyatt thought. I’m a burden, and you didn’t sign up to babysit me for the summer. You should’ve left me there. It was a scary thought, but Wyatt imagined Alec would be able to have some peace of mind if Wyatt were ever to… disappear. Wyatt matched Alec’s sigh.
"Forget that I said that, I say too much." The Gryffindor sighed again. It wasn’t a very fun conversation. Alec, obviously desperate to lighten up the mood in the room, put on his best happy voice and asked, "You want your lame end of the deal now?" Wyatt actually forgot about that part… what was it… oh yes. He could ask Alec any question he wanted. Wyatt knew what he wanted to ask, but he had trouble phrasing it.
He didn't want to come off as too blunt or rude, but he needed Alec to be the one to answer a question for once. Alec had been oddly silent, even before what had happened the other night. Even at Hogwarts, he seemed pretty down-trodden, and now that they were "friends" Wyatt felt like he needed to say something about it. It was quite clear to see, and Wyatt began to wonder if Alec’s parents had even talked to him about it.
After a good thirty seconds of deliberation in his head, what he went with was, “Are you okay?” It wasn’t a secret that Alec had been feeling low recently. Alec wasn’t a bad person, so Wyatt didn’t like seeing him sad. The Lion deserved a break, that's what the summer was supposed to be... It was a strange thing, but Wyatt actually found himself caring for Alec J. Mason’s well-being. And it didn’t scare him too much.

Alec blinked at the question, taking a minute to process the words. Was Alec okay? Was there really any need for asking such a question? Alec was fine, well somewhat fine. Wyatt didn't need to worry, but he was. Did Alec not look okay? Was that what was going on? "That's a loaded question Wyatt." Alec said getting off his bed as he began to pack again. Most of the reason for this being that then he wouldn't have to look at Wyatt while he spoke. "Why do you want to know if I'm okay?" He asked. The boy folded his robes, and he set them down in his trunk. Suddenly having more motivation to pack now.
"It's usually the other way around.." Alec said, his voice trailing off, he liked it being the other way around. "But if you need to know, I'm really not that upset. Just a small thing bothering me." Alec shrugged it off as he packed more of the things on his list, spending the next few minutes of the conversation quiet realizing it was quite hard to play it off. "Clifton isn't coming back to Hogwarts this year. It's stupid to care as much as I do, really. I'm just worried about his safety. He wasn't allowed to tell me much more than I needed to know about what was going on." Alec told Wyatt slowing down his packing. "I can't even owl him now, that's how bad things are." Alec said. He stopped at this, unsure how to go on with his wording.
Alec wanted to mention SOATOP as well, and how everything was messed with for that as well. But obviously knew he couldn't, so he shut his mouth. Maybe Wyatt could find out later what was secretly going on at Hogwarts with that. But now wasn't the time, nor was Alec ever going to mention it to Wyatt from then. He wasn't sure Wyatt would say yes, and it felt like replacing Clifton if Alec or Leo ever let someone else join again. Well, maybe they'd see how that'd turn out..
Alec let his eyes focus on the surrounding fuzziness before speaking again. "This is why you shouldn't have asked, though. I overthink too much and it blows stupid situations out of proportion." Alec added finally to the mess of his strand of words.
