Questionable Lessons
"You should feel lucky."
"Don't be so sensitive."
"It doesn't bother anyone else, why are you upset?"
"Well life isn't fair, get over it."
"It's really not that bad, stop whining."
Lana stared down at the bird that lie still in front of her, a slight twitch in its wing before it fell dead silent. She glanced upwards at her father, her expression horrified. He disregarded her discomfort, picking up the deceased animal only to then throw it into the woods.
The lesson she was being taught today was death, as everyone in the dark family must come to accept it. It scared her, the way her father killed the animal without hesitation. She could feel the tears running softly down her face, though they were quickly wiped away to prevent her father from seeing.
"What's the point of killing the birds, father?" She asked solemnly, hopeful he'd give her a reasonable excuse. Though he stayed silent, grabbing her hand as he drug her back into the manor.
He sat her down in a chair, his face inches away from her own. "You have to overcome death, Lana Monet. Do you hear me?" He demanded sternly, though his voice seemed soft as if he was sorry. She nodded silently, unable to meet his eyes.
"I said- Do you hear me?" He asked again, his voice now angry. Lana nodded again, only this time she spoke quietly. "Yes, father. I understand."
He said nothing, and instead walked away, leaving her to weep in the chair.
She was terrified, scared, though above it all- she was afraid of the person she would become. Must she grow up to be evil? She felt as if she had a choice, even though making the wrong decision could result in deep consequences. Though was there really a wrong option as of now?
At this point she had two ways of living,
Kill or be killed.
