Muggle Edinburgh, Scotland
Reducio
This is set the summer before Hogwarts! Please check out the fringe festival edinburgh if you need more of an idea of atmosphere.
It was Saturday, and thus Muggle day.
Mardella had been woken up bright and early in the Bram's little flat in Edinburgh. Surprisingly, it was not Tiordan's snoring that woke her but Ma's insistent shaking. She'd tried to roll over and ignore it but Jane Bram was having none of that. In short order, the bleary eyed eleven-year-old had found herself fed and dressed and bundled down the stairs to help out in the corner store for the day.
The newsagents' Ma owned, and their home, was located on the Royal Mile, a long cobbled road that stretched up towards the Edinburgh Castle. As a prime tourist spot, especially during the summer months of the Festival, the shop opened extra early. She yawned as Dillon passed her bottles of milk and fizzy drinks to top up the shelves with, keeping an ear out for the bell in case of customers. The sun was already up despite it being barely seven o' clock, but that was what happened in summer she supposed.
Their wares were doing quite well this season. It had initially started out as a way for Jorah and Tiordan to get some practice in and make a bit more cash for the shop. Jorah's whittled Highland Cow figurines were flying off the shelves, as were Dillon's thistle carved key-rings. Tiordan had been working on beads and necklace pendants much to her brother's annoyance, an in the shop they didn't see as much customers as the key-rings or the figurines. With any luck, Mardella was hoping that Da would approve something of her own to be added to the souvenir shelves next summer, but he was a bit of a perfectionist when it came to woodwork so she'd really have to work on it this year. Not to mention he hadn't actually been on speaking terms with her since her birthday.
This summer she didn't have the luxury of manning the shop though. Dillon, her oldest brother at twenty and the only one of her siblings that actually worked here, was to watch the floor. He was tall and well-muscled, the gym freak, so Ma hoped that he would dissuade any shoplifters from trying anything, while Ma stood by the counter.
During the whole month of the Fringe Festival, the wide street was packed with both tourists and locals alike who enjoyed the rare sunshine and the variety of street performances set up on the streets every couple hundred of meters or so. Cars were blocked off from even entering the long stretch of road during it, which made getting deliveries problematic.
Mardella's role in this chaos was out on the busy streets. She had a flat wide tray that had a belt attached to go around her neck and waist, and a selection of the wooden carvings and trinkets that Da and the boys made to sell on the streets. Ma patted her on the cheek and ushered her out the door with a full stock in her tray, a bundle of flyers, and a fanny pack tucked against her belt to store change in.
"I don't want to see you until lunch, Della!"
"Yes, Ma..." She muttered as she stepped out into the sunshine. Already the streets were starting to fill as tourists woke up and headed out for breakfast. Starting her usual route, Mardella made her way down the familiar Mile, "Handcrafted souvenirs, carved right here in Edinburgh!" She called out to a group passing by, holding a flyer out. "Perfect as a gift or a keepsake!"

Muggle Edinburgh, Scotland
Parcel was in a sour mood while following his mother and father up the cobbled street. He was wearing a black and white striped sweater with a collar attached to it. Parcel wasn't particularly fond of the sweater, but it was the one he usually wore when he was visiting muggle areas. Normally they would just stay around the wizarding community in Montrose, but his father in a flash of "genius" came up with the idea that they needed to be more socialized with muggles.
His father works in the Muggle Liaison Office and when checking around at work he found out that the closest interesting thing happening now was a festival in Edinburgh.
Parcel pulled up one of the legs of his new pants, they were a bit to big and would often go under his heel while walking. He often went exploring on the countryside where they lived. And would often come home with holes in his pants knees and such. Well not to day! his mom had said and bought him a new pair he could "grow in to...".
And they were itchy to.
Parcel looked up at his parents with the most puppylike eyes he could in a pleading way, as to say Pleas, can we just go home. But his parents just laughed and kept walking.
Defeated, Parcel kept walking to.
It wasn't that he didn't find Edinburgh exciting, it was just that this was a very important year. It was around the time Parcel would be receiving his enrollment for next year. After all, he was from a wizardfamily, and it would be unthinkable for him not to attend Hogwarts. But.. What if the letter arrives when i'm here in Edinburgh, or, what if i leave Edinburgh, but the owl went here and couldn't find me and they just forgot about me? Parcel got more and more depressed the more he thought about it.
His mother was wearing a purple summer-dress with a matching cardigan, while his father his normal work clothes, but over them he was wearing something like a frock, and a pointed hat without a brim. While they themselves felt that they were perfectly blending in, Parcel noticed that they got some weird glaces from here and there.
His father was pushing around a baby stroller and in it sat parcel's two younger brothers, both two years old now. While Parcel was unhappy, both his brothers had a splendid time it seem.
While walking in his own thoughts and looking down, he walked right into his fathers back. "Ugh!" Both his parents had stopped, Parcel rubbed his forehead and looked out from behind his fathers back. There a girl handed his mother a flyer
"Handcrafted souvenirs, carved right here in Edinburgh!"
"Perfect as a gift or a keepsake!"
His mother received the flyer and thanked the girl before they started walking again.
"Oh, Eugene, look at this, we should absolutely go and see if we cant find a souvenir for mother, you know how much she loves muggle keepsakes!"
"Yes, of course, we should go right after we find a place to eat lunch"
His father and mother kept talking why walking down the street and away from the girl handing out flyers.
Parcel was left behind staring at the girl while he scratched a bandage on his chin. It was a injury he had gotten while "borrowing" his fathers broom some days ago and he had started a bad habit of scratching the wound, or in this case the bandage, when he was thinking.
A little bit annoyed she had stopped them, ending up in him walking into his father, he scowled at here. But ending up feeling like it was just him being angry at her instead of worrying about the Hogwarts-letter he felt a bit silly and stopped scowling and instead just scratched his bandage again.
Noticing his parents had started walking without him, he left the girl and ran over to them.
"But mom, can't we leave now? What if the Hogwarts-letter come when i'm not there and i end up not being accepted?!"
"Sush! silly boy, Hogwart don't make mistakes like that. Now come on, we'r going to eat lunch before we go shopping, and look at this. Don't you think grandma would love this?"
Showing the flyer they continued walking to find a place to eat lunch.

Several hours had passed since she'd stepped out of the store that morning. The bundle of flyers she'd brought out with her had decreased by about a third but crowds would be picking up now that the day was in full swing so hopefully they'd be out of her hands by eleven o' clock.
She passed out one to a family dressed rather oddly for a day around town, especially in the height of summer, but perhaps that was just a sign that they were posh - and would buy more things from the shop. Or just particularly extravagant tourists? They had a rather old fashioned twin-pram that she imagined probably wasn't very well suited to the cobbles in the Old Town streets. A rather bumpy ride for the tots inside.
The mother thanked her and Mardella watched the family unit move off.
"Did you want a flyer too?" She questioned, quirking a brow in the best imitation of her Ma. The boy's scowl faded and he scratched his chin. And then, without even a glance of acknowledgment, ran off after his parents.
Mardella huffed out loud, watching as the loose baby hairs flopped back around her face, having escaped her braids. "Boys." She murmured under her breath. Shaking her head a few times, she pasted on a fresh smile and forced a bit more energy into her spiel, hazel eyes locking on a new group of passersby.
"Handcrafted souvenirs, carved right here in Edinburgh!" She said, holding a carved thistle broach out from her display tray resting on her hips, accompanied by a flap of bright paper. "Perfect as a gift or a keepsake!"

Mardella stared after them. Oh, so a different sort of tourist then. She let out a quiet snort at the hat and the robes before she startled at the realisation that the boy had stayed behind and was glaring rather fiercely at her. His chin was jutted out, a flash of plasters on the end of it, eyes narrowed. Mardella frowned back at him, posture stiffening. What did she do?"... find a souvenir for mother, you know how much she loves muggle keepsakes!"

"Just in time!" Ma called out, absently shoving a strand of dark hair out of her face and beckoned her over with frantic hand movements. Mardella moved through the store, slipping past browsing customers, and Dillon, her oldest brother, stacking shelves and restocking. She dodged his attempt at a hair ruffle and headed towards the counter where Ma was folding gift-wrap around a themed mug with a strained smile at the waiting customer. "Ah - my daughter will take over." Ma explained, keeping a hand on the wrapping to stop it from unfolding, until Mardella was close enough to take over.
She suppressed a grumble, pasting her 'customer' smile on. "Hi - oh, a present?" She said winningly, as Ma darted through the door to the back stores. Mardella's feet ached from standing all morning, and quite honestly she'd been hoping to grab lunch when she came in. She slipped the wrapped box into a bag and punched in the price on the old till. "That'll be six-pounds-eighty, thank you."
From where she was stood, she could see the whole shop. The whole floor was more long than it was wide. In the shop window, there were mannequins wearing tartan and kilts and hats with fake red hair, postured like they were gesturing to a display of a number of wooden carvings and figurines - the most eye-catching of which was one of Edinburgh Castle on the rock which was the size of someone's head! Once you stepped inside the shop, the layout was split into two levels - the upper level (where the counter was) a half step above the lower. The lower level mostly consisted of two aisles which started with newspapers and magazines, and moved on to postcard, themed puzzles and colouring books and tins of Scottish shortbread biscuits, before finally displaying the handcrafted wooden carvings her family were so proud of. There were key-rings - of thistles, highland cows, Scottish flags, bagpipes, whisky bottles - and carved figurines too, and pins and pendants and bracelets. Da, Jorah and Tio had really worked hard the last few months to churn out enough stock for the peak of tourist season - although Mardella always maintained it was her who was doing the hard work flyering.
On the upper level were your typical cornerstore amenities - two fridges stocked with bottled drinks and a selection of packed sandwiches, and there was one wall dedicated to offering different sweets and crisps and chocolates. The counter was here too, of course, behind which they kept packs of cigarettes in stock, although Mardella wasn't allowed to sell these. And in the right corner there was a doorway that lead to a stairwell to go down to the stock room or up to the family's flat.
"Have a nice day!" She called out to the customer, hoping Ma would be back soon to take over so she could go eat. She glared at Dillon's back, a little further down the shop, she was starving! Mardella opened her mouth to yell for Ma - just to check how long she'd be - when the bell rang and the shop door opened once more. "Great!" She muttered, eyes flicking upwards.

Muggle Edinburgh, Scotland
Cassie was enjoying being back in Scotland for the Fringe Festival. It felt like home and that was a nice feeling after the move to London.
She stepped her way down the cobbled streets, taking in the sights around her. It was amazing seeing all the various shops and stalls and the people that worked so hard to keep the village alive. It made Cassie appreciate the muggle life all that more.
As she passed through yet another little street she noticed a brightly coloured flyer lying on the ground. Surely someone had meant to put it in the bin as they passed but the wind blew it out as they left? Who knew.
Cassie bent down precariously and picked up the flyer between her fingers.
Printed on the front was an advertisement for a newsagents selling trinkets and woodwork just a little down the road.
“Perfect for gifts and keepsakes...” She read aloud. “Hmm, this would be nice to take back to London with me. Remind me of home.”
Following the instructions on the flyer, she headed down the street until she could see the shop just ahead.
The street was beginning to become quite busy as midday rolled in and more and more tourists and locals alike mulled about, doing their shopping.
Cassie picked her way through the growing crowd until she reached the shop door. She couldn’t help but smile fondly at the lovely way the window was decorated, adequately showing off the beautiful items that were available to buy inside.
She pushed open the door, the bell jingling above her and walked into the store.
Rows of stock for sale lined shelves and cases and Cassie struggled to know where the look first. There were so many things she’d love to buy. Stood behind the counter was a young girl, about Cassies age as far as she could tell.
Cassie threw her a little smile - mainly because she couldn’t help but try and be polite but also because the girl had a look of annoyance on her face that made Cassie feel like she had stepped into somewhere she shouldn’t have.

Muggle Edinburgh, Scotland
Walking down the street, Parcel felt his mood had gotten a bit lighter. Maybe it was the food that made his mood better? While thinking he rubbed his belly a little. After walking around all morning they had stopped at a cafe for lunch. While eating the food, his mother had sternly tried to explain to him why the letter from Hogwarts wouldn't be lost. He wasn't sure he entirely believed her, but he had to admit that what she said sounded logical.
Having a lighter mood made him more interested in his surroundings. He often had his parents stop so that they could look at some of the street artists. Even though they were muggles, they had a lot of tricks Parcel had never seen before. There had even been a magician pretending to be a normal street performer, or that's what his dad said. Apparently his dad didn't like that, magic should not be shown to muggles he said. No matter if the muggles believe it is magic or not. Parcel's father would have gone after the wizard if it wasn't for Parcel's mother telling him firmly that it was his day of and that they were here with Parcel, and not to apprehend stupid wizards.
The old twin pram made something like a ticking sound as his dad pushed it down the cobblestone road. Parcel's two younger brothers was both sleeping soundly inside. It seemed like they already was exhausted by all the new impressions. Parcel looked up at the shining sun, it was a little past midday so the sun was high in the sky and also made him feel a bit to hot. It seemed his mother had the same idea as she started looking for a shop to go in to.
She stopped by a shop she seemed to take an interest in. Parcel to stopped to look, he did not see anything special, so he wondered why his mom would stop by this one in particular.
Peeking trough the window he could see some mannequins wearing skirts.. the only thing he found a bit weird was that the mannequins was male. It wasn't that he didn't know that men used kilts sometime, he just didn't get it, wasn't skirts for girls? He also looked at a huge carving of a castle, he didn't really know any of the immediate layout, so he could not tell what castle it was, but it was huge and intricately carved.. "hmm, where had he heard carvings earlier today?"
Looking up at the sign he winced a little. The sign was the same as on that flyer, the flyer they got from that girl. It wasn't that he felt like he did anything bad, he just didn't want to explain why he was mad, and that she was just a innocent bystander in his nervousness. Not that he really could explain, "Hey, you, i wasn't angry at you or anything, sorry for scowling at you, it's just that i'm afraid that me being here means that the letter coming by owl saying i got into the magic school called Hogwarts might be lost under transport..." Yeah.. that wasn't going to work at all.
While contemplating this his mother had already decided on going in, so she dragged Parcel in with her. His dad had decided to stay outside with the twins, seeing as the door was to tight for them to fit the pram trough.
"Here, take this and go see if you cant find some candy you like" Handing Parcel some money she immediately went over to where the carvings was with a "oooh, look, that on's so nice!"
Peeking his head in now and again his father would agree or disagree with his mother.
It wasn't to many people in the shop, only someone that seemed to be working there, and also another girl looking around.
Parcel looked up and again winced a little, not only was it the shop the girl had advertised for, but she stood at the counter! The last person he wanted to see today was the one person he would have to interact with.
Letting out a bit of a sigh he went up to the higher part of the store. Trying to look as little as possible at the girl he went straight for where the fridges stood. Looking over the fridge he came to think of how he actually was quite thirsty from walking all morning and decided that the gains was worth the risk of talking to the girl.
Only after deciding what he wanted to buy did he realize his impending doom... He had no clue how muggle money worked.. was what he had in his hand little.. or much, and what did he need to pay for the soda he had decided on.. looking over at the girl he had met earlier that day he made a bit of a coughing noise.
"Umm, How much of this would i need to buy that? Do i have enough?"
Holding out his hand with his palm up he showed her the money in his possession. He pointed on the soda he wanted with his other hand.
"It's not that i'm stupid or something. It's just that.. tch.. No, never mind, you wouldn't understand"
With a embarrassed expression he wasn't really able to look straight at the girl, and instead looked at the floor, or walls while only taking glances at her.
