The World Turned Upside-down Solo Complete

Location: Merthyr Tydfil, Wales
Summer for Adlai seemed to had flown by as now it was August and she would be back on the train to Hogwarts soon. Like every other child she dreaded going back to school as she knew it would be more tests and papers to write but at the same time she was excited to see her magical friends again.

Since summer began she had mostly spent her days looking after her younger sisters as her parents worked. She didn’t mind it since she knew it meant they trusted her. Dorothy was quite self sufficient already, while Johanna followed Adlai around like a duckling.

Every now and then, like sisters they would have their little spats that would end with a door being slammed. But then soon after the awkward apologies would roll in and would always happen right before their parents came home.

Today was no different besides the endless rain that poured. Their mother, Anna, cooked dinner and their father, Jón, lead his daughters in Maghrib prayer all was well.

The T.V played softly in the background as they ate and spoke of what they should do over the coming weekend, when Anna and Jón have no work to attend to. There was a knock at their door.

“Excuse me ladies, I’ll get the door.” Jón said as he cleared his throat and Johana laughed at something her mother had said.

As Jón opened the door there was a flash of lighting and he found his aunt, Margret-Viktoria, standing there. Her long pale face, poked nose, and furrowed brows. The same as ever.
“Auntie? What are you doing here?”
“Do I need an excuse to see my nephew and his family?” She said, her voice low and bitter.
“It’s just not like you to show up out of the blue.”
Margret raised one of her sharp brows. “Are you going to invite me in or not?”

Jón sighed and stepped to the side. He never particularly liked his aunt, in fact no one in the family did.

She had pressured him to move his family to Wales though he did not know why she wanted him to.

Her excuse was that she wanted to be closer to him and that by moving to Wales he’d be giving his daughters a better access to education. The second one she wasn’t wrong on though.

Margret entered the house, her heels dragging across the floor as she did. She then shoved
her soaking umbrella into Jóns hands.

Making her way out of the threshold of the doorway she entered the kitchen/dining room area of her nephews small buy modest home.

All four girls at the table went silent and looked up at Margret. “Hello, Aunt Margret.” Dorothy said full of distaste. Margret merely looked Dorothy up and down. She did the same with Johana before turning to Adlai. “You’re returning to school soon, yes?” She asked her.

“Yes, Aunt Margret. I am.” Adlais palms began to sweat at the question. Her sisters still didn’t know of her magical school and her parents didn’t want them to know, at least not until they were older.
“That’s good. Have you been keeping in touch with some friends?” Margret asked.
“Yes, Aunt Margret.”
“I see. That’s good.”

Anna looked from Adlai to Margret before standing up and ushering Johana and Dorothy out of the dinning room and into their own room saying that She, Aunt Margret, and Adlai had to have a little “adult” talk. The younger girls objected but of course Anna won in the end.

Once Anna had returned to the dining room and sat next to Jón and Adlai, Margret spoke again.
“I’ve seen owls flying to and from your home ever since Adlai left for her ever so mysterious new boarding school.”
“It’s probably because we’ve been releasing the mice we catch in the house out in the backyard.” Jón said, the room deathly quite. So much so you could probably hear a rabbits heart beat.

Margret raised a brow. “Mice you say? That’s strange the things I see the owls carry off never look like mice but more like...letters.”
Anna’s eyes grew wide and darted over time Jón. Again the room fell silent and a few pain staking seconds passed by before Margret spoke again.

“Oh please Jonny boy I know that you and Anna could never afford to send Adlai to a boarding school.”
“She’s there on a scholarship. We’ve told you this.”
“You told me she was going to Monmouth School For Girls but I never heard of them taking anyone in on scholarship so I called and asked but they said they have never had a student by the name of Adlai Rod.”

Anna could see the sweat forming on Jòns face as Margret asked the following question.
“Where are you going to school, Adlai?”
Adlai sat silently hoping her parents would come up with a cover up on the spot to help her. But she knew there was no hiding anything now.
“Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.”

The tense feeling the air lifted as Margret began to laugh. “Thank god! I was starting to think I had your father move you here for nothing!”
Jón and Anna looked at Margret with wide eyes.
“Wait...you knew this whole time?!” Adlai asked.
“Of course I did! I’ve known since the first time I met you. You have no idea how happy this makes me. To know that there is another witch the family after all these years.”
“Another witch?” Anna asked her face looking as if she had just seen a ghost.

And that’s when Margret began to explain.
“My father was a fantastic wizard and my mother was a wonderful witch. They worked for the ministry of magic and worked well. We lived a comfortable life here in Wales. We were also pure blood. When I turned 11 my own letter to Hogwarts arrived, my parents were nothing but proud. After all it was expected. And when I was half way through my first semester a letter arrived bringing joyous news. I was going to be a big sister. When Ísak was born there was nothing irregular, all had went well. But for some reason, as he continued to grow he was showing no signs of magic. That made our once happy little family very worried.
No matter what we did or tried to do, Ísak just didn’t have any magical abilities.
Our parents gave up by the time Ísak was 9. Not wanting Ísak to feel like an outcast they manipulated his memories, erasing any trace of magic from them. After that we moved to Iceland and disappeared from the wizarding world. But now there is Adlai, meaning the magic in our family line has not died yet.”

Jón, Adlai, and Anna sat in utter disbelief.
“So your meaning to tell me, that my own father would have been a wizard?” Jón asked.
“Um... supposedly, yes.”
“This is amazing!” Jón yelled as he jumped about the room, he was never the sharpest knife in the box. Anna however, still just stared at Margret.
“So you’re a witch?” She asked.
“Yes.” Margret replied, plan and simple.
“How did you know Adlai-“
“Oh it was really just an estimated guess. Sadly it doesn’t seem to be the same with the other two...”
“Dorothy and Johana?” Adlai chimed in.
“Yes, those two.” Margret said as she stood from her seat and collected her things.
“Well I best be off now and give you all some space and let what I told you sink in. I do hope you have a wonderful rest of your evening.”
Margret then began to make her way out of the door before saying one last thing, “Oh and Adlai, I know we’ll be quite close from now on.”
