A Scenic Reverie
Jay wandered blissfully throughout the school grounds, hopelessly lost in his reverie as he alternated his gaze between the fantastical views of the landscape around him and the truly formidable castle itself. In fact, he also spent much of the time focused on the horizon, where the sun could be seen lazily lowering itself below the distant mountains, casting light in shades and colors that seemed undoubtedly magical. He always marveled at such scenes, though now he found himself wondering if the magic he would learn at Hogwarts could ever hope to match the majesty and wonder of the world that already existed around him.
Now his eyes flicked in the direction he knew the campgrounds to be, and his thoughts turned to summer camp. That was where he would soon end up; that was the reason he had come here before the school year deemed to begin.
He thought of his mother, the tears in her eyes as she had watched him leave on the train, his father standing beside her, obviously trying to remain strong for her benefit, as well as Jay's own.
He had received the invitation to Hogwarts on his eleventh birthday. It had included information that the school year would not begin until later in the year, but that there was a summer camp that would allow new students who were to join them that year to get to know the school, make friends and the like.
His mother had hated the idea of him being gone for any extra amount of time, but he had nevertheless jumped at the chance to come to Hogwarts early. He enjoyed the idea of being more prepared when school did begin. Besides, excitable as he was, he would not have been able to stand a prolonged wait.
His parents had not been forced in any way to allow him to go early - or at all, for that matter - and yet they had allowed him to make the decision, and he loved them all the more for it.
So he stood, leaning against the castle wall, oblivious to all around him save for that spectacular sunset and a sudden, yet deep feeling of homesickness. This was the first time he had experienced such feelings, and he had to fight away coming tears. But fight them away he did.

River had so far been pleased with how the summer camp had been going. A part of her truly yearned to go home, and wished she had, but another felt like Hogwarts was more of a true home for her anyway. Plus, there were people here whom she enjoyed spending time with, while back in Hounslow, there were none. Well, except her father of course, but something told River that he wouldn’t be much company.
All those letters that I sent him all throughout the year, and he couldn’t even find time to reply to a single one of them. A bitter feeling rose in the young ravenclaw as she thought about it. She would often wonder if he’d even recieved the owls at all. Perhaps they were intercepted or something. She looked for excuses other than her father not caring. He’d always cared for her, until a couple years ago of course, but that wasn’t his fault either.
The Red-Head shook her head and wafted away those thoughts. There was nothing she could do about it now. After spending some time around the campgrounds, she felt like going for a walk by herself. To simply think, and get some peace of mind. It was getting late, and the sun was setting slowly behind the horizon. It was the perfect time to head out, after spending the entire day, dependant on finding shade to cover River’s pale skin.
River’s grey and blue eyes scanned the grounds before her. She knew of multiple nice places to sit down and relax, but her eyes landed on something else. A person, standing lonely by the castle wall. She hadn’t expected to find anyone else up there at his time, but perhaps they too, had the same plan as River did.
A part of her sunk, like it would when she saw people at the time of wanting to be alone. Another part of her felt like walking up, perhaps he didn’t want to be alone. River was not one to worry, or help other people out of pure empathy, usually, she’d only lend a hand to others if it was beneficial for her in one way or another. That was simply a part of her manipulative self. Still, today had been a good day, and it was summer. She knew she’d be spending the rest of the summer around these people, and she knew she couldn’t avoid them all summer.
Pushing a small strand of red hair out of her face, River walked confidently up to the person. As she got closer, she could see it was a boy. River folded her arms across her chest, and pushed on a slightly forced, but real-enough looking smile, as she approached the boy. «Hello», she said, and stopped next to him, keeping an alright distance. «I don’t think I’ve seen you around before... First year?», she asked him, and eyed him with cold eyes, though, still a polite smile on her face.

"Hello. I don't think I've seen you around before... First year?"
Jay had closed his eyes, having contented himself with the feeling of the air around him as wistful thoughts of home floated through his mind. Had he begun to doze ever so slightly? This was made to seem entirely likely by the way the voice startled him as though he had been awakened from a dream. Though he supposed a daydream was, in fact, a sort of dream.
He opened his azure eyes only to have them fall on an unfamiliar face. Though, he simply could not lie to himself, it was a face that he didn't mind his eyes resting on one bit.
Acting unbidden, his mind raced with descriptions of that face: Stunning... gorgeous... almost painfully beautiful.
He resisted shaking his head to dispel the thoughts. Was he an eleven-year old kid or Romeo?
Romeo had to make a good first impression, despite the knowledge that his chances were but a minuscule speck among the heavens. Though he refused to make known to this girl his opinions on her appearance.
He sincerely hoped that what seemed like minutes of his mind attempting to function was not, in reality, an uncomfortable amount of time involving him gaping at her like a deranged fool who did not understand the appropriate timing for a staring contest.
Clearing his throat, he only just managed to keep his voice steady. "That's right," he said. "Well, actually, I'm technically not even a student yet, but I will be when school starts."
He had been caught completely off-guard, not having expected anyone else to be in the area, let alone someone... like this. But now he was finally able to regain his bearings a bit, and he allowed himself to observe this newcomer beyond immediate appearances. If he had any ability to guess age, he figured she was about his age, though, judging by the way she had voiced her question, he guessed that the coming school year would not be her first.
He studied her eyes and vaguely tried to recall if he had ever met anyone with eyes of similar coloration. He didn't expect he had. But, speaking of her eyes, he thought he saw something in them that didn't quite match up with the smile on her lips. He wondered what was hidden behind the veil of her outward appearance. He had learned that basically everyone had things hidden inside, covered up for the benefit of those around them. Jay himself had plenty, his homesickness being no exception. It had always been a deep interest of his to uncover those covert thoughts and emotions of others, to find out who they truly were, to gain a more "real" relationship with them.
Deciding he certainly had to start somewhere, he voiced a question of his own. "So what brings you out here? This beautiful sunset, maybe?" He gestured with a hand toward the sun, sinking ever lower in the sky.

After asking the boy a question, there was this pause. River didn't mind, she was known to be very patient... At least in certain situations. She eyed him as her left eyebrow slowly raised, and she looked at him, curiously. The smile she'd put on was beginning to twitch a little. She had never been good at expressing emotions, she felt them sure, but showing it to others was not something she'd usually do. So keeping a smile up, was not easy, as positive emotions were the most difficult to her. Why is he just looking at me? River wondered. A slight anoyance grew slowly in her gut. She didn't like it when people stared, it made her feel like there was something wrong with her. Something that people would notice. River herself was definitely guilty of staring, usually her mind just drifted off, but she was also one to stand her ground when looking someone in the eyes.
River nodded slightly, she had assumed he was atteding his first year, as she'd not seen him before. Not that she was too familiar with the people attending her own year either, making friends was never her strong side. "So what brings you out here? This beautiful sunset, maybe?", the boy asked, as his hand motioned to the sun. She didn't take her eyes off the boy to turn and look. "Really I just felt like heading for a walk, and uhm, the sunset's cool too I guess", she said, and shrugged her shoulders. "It's the perfect time to go around outside, as the sun will be out of my way in a few minutes", she added, and combed her fingers roughly through her red hair framing her pale face.
"I'm River by the way", She said quickly, without reaching her hand out for a handshake. "And you are?", she asked the boy, still a curious expression on her face.

There was certainly a level of embarrassment that Jay felt at the awkward way he had begun this interaction, but he remembered the counsel of his parents on such matters.
'Allowing a feeling of embarrassment to fester inside you is completely pointless,' his father would say. 'You can't hope to change what's already happened, and worrying about what others think will only make things worse.'
Jay had learned such things from the time he was small, and didn't normally have trouble reflecting this particular teaching. So he pushed down that rising wave of bashfulness and decided instead to enjoy the conversation.
"Really I just felt like heading for a walk, and uhm, the sunset's cool too I guess. It's the perfect time to go around outside, as the sun will be out of my way in a few minutes"
That comment left no small amount of confusion in his mind. Glancing back at the sun, which was almost completely covered by the mountains at this point, he wondered how anyone could not simply adore the sun- the warmth, the life it provided, the unending beauty it allowed you to see.
He shrugged slightly. He supposed he just had to realize that everyone had different opinions about, well... everything. Not that it was a problem unless someone had the opinion that it was, say, okay to push someone off a cliff.
"I see," he replied. "The nighttime is beautiful too. So peaceful with the moon and the stars, listening to the sounds of night creatures."
Jay had always been known among his friends and most who knew him as being oblivious, often seeming to be in a different world. They were absolutely right, of course, for he did tend to get lost in his own thoughts quite regularly, though he tried not to when having a conversation. It tended to be easier for him to pay attention when he was actually interested in speaking to someone, as he was now.
"I'm River by the way. And you are?"
He returned his gaze to her as she said this. A genuine smile finding its way onto his features, he offered his hand to her, utterly oblivious to the fact that she had specifically refrained from giving him hers.
"Great to meet you, River," he said cheerfully, trying the name out. "My name's Jay."

Popping on by because the thread said open so woop.
Looking at Kaegen, you could instantly feel something was wrong. That he was far from normal, and far from safe. Shadows seemed to twist and move about under his feet, but when you looked closely there was nothing unusual there. His stormy blueish grey eyes seemed to be lit up by the ring of red that circled his pupils, the only lively bit of color on his otherwise pasty white and grey skin. He looked more corpse than boy, or perhaps he was just afflicted by a curse, or a magical malady of some kind.
Long, thin tapered fingers ending in dull clawed fingernails peeked out of tattered and worn robe sleeves, much too long for his small frame. His black hair was about as black as black could possibly get, sporting the occasional stick or leaf that he had never bothered to remove. A large umbrella was strapped to his back along with a dark blue cape that looked to be made out of drapery. A fuzzy, light grey scarf completed the bizarre look.
If you thought about it logically, there was nothing especially scary about the boy. He should have looked more comical than intimidating. And yet, maybe it was his stare, or the odd way he walked, or a combination of all of his physical traits, but he was scary. You knew he was there even when your back was turned, a creepy foreboding that turned your skin to goosebumps and made you shiver, worry. In some cases even panic.
He was headed unmistakably towards the pair of students who had been talking, but as he neared them, the waves of unsettling fear simply dissipated like smoke on a windy day. He stopped about two yards from the pair of them, looking from one to the other slowly, trying to decipher some hidden code, or read some hidden thought, try to understand what had been going on before he had arrived.
He learned absolutely nothing. Kaegen Deathmote was many things, but a reader of faces was not one of them. That didn't stop him from trying, but it certainly stopped him from getting results. The girl did seem a bit strange to him, just a bit more off than the average student. Labeling her a possible death witch, he introduced himself in a quiet, raspy tone of voice, barely above a loud whisper. It sounded less creepy, and more like he had been screaming in a closet for far too long.
"Kaegen Deathmote, Fens-Born Scarf-Wielder..."
His voice trailed off before continuing. He hated it, hated not having the rest of his title, hated being almost without a name, almost without a purpose. It was fine for them, fine for the students of hogwarts who moved about every day thinking about themselves and each other, but for him? He needed more.
"What are you two doing?"
He kept facing forward, but his eyes unmistakably shifted to the girl before he asked an almost accusatory question. If she was indeed different, then she was probably a shapeshifting monster, or a death witch, although the two weren't mutually exclusive.
"And what are you."

River's smile had faded now. That did not necessarily mean she had lost any sense of previous happines or joy, if there ever was any to begin with. It was simply just not showing on her face any longer, as it went back to it's usual cold, expression. Now, that the sun had mostly set, she decided to leave her sweater back at the camp, and was wearing a grey and green t-shirt, showing her thin, pale and scrawny looking arms. Which were folded tightly across her slender body.
The boy reached out a hand, "Great to meet you, River," he said, "My name's Jay.". River looked down at his outstretched hand, then back up at his face again, not reaching her own hand out, she sent him a quick smile as she simply answered, "Well, Good evening Jay", her smile lasted for a little, but faded as she saw someone approaching in the distance.
She couldn't tell who it was from sight, but the hairs beginning to stand up at the back of her neck, gave her a pretty good guess.
She watched as Kaegen approaced, and nodded politely toward him as to say, good evening.
Walking up to the two, Kaegen procceded with a pretty interesting introduction. River again, pushed on a polite smile. Noticing a question had been asked, she was about to answer but before a single sound had made it out of her mouth, he asked a second question. It seemed more directed towars River tha the last one. What am I? Her eyebrows furrowed, "That is an interesting question", she said. A little taken by surprise. "Depends on what you mean, why would you wonder of that anyway?", She said slowly. Answering questions with questions was something River would often do. Usually, people would not ask those kinds of questions at all, and she felt, in some way called out and River wasn't very sure if she liked it too much. Did it matter what she was? River was't afraid or ashamed of who she was. Perhaps a little annoyed that her magic had been affected by her mothers genes, or whatever, but there was nothing to do about it now. She eyed Kaegen, with a neutral or perhaps a little curious look on her face. There was something intriguing with this boy, he sparked a certain interest in River for some strange reason.

It does, in fact, say Open. So welcome to you!
Jay held his hand out, waiting for her to shake it. But she simply glanced at it before raising her gaze back to his own with a smile and saying, "Well, Good evening, Jay."
After waiting another moment, he pulled his hand back and inspected it, assuring himself that there wasn't anything particularly undesirable on it. Finding nothing, he figured it may just as well be him that was undesirable. Oh, his poor, romantic heart.
Just then, a sudden sense of foreboding entered his conscience, spreading throughout his whole body. An odd notion of cold accompanied the feeling, making him shiver as the hairs on his arms stood on end.
Realizing that the feeling actually seemed to stem from a certain presence, he turned to see the newcomer approaching. It was another unfamiliar face to him, though that really wasn't saying much, considering he had only just arrived at the school. The boy appeared maybe a bit older than him, and Jay's immediate thought was that this guy needed to catch some more sun. At that thought, he glanced back to where the sun was setting only to find that it had now completely receded behind the mountains. Considering his newfound company, he felt he may sorely miss the light it had provided.
The sense of foreboding seemed to pass as the boy came closer, however. Despite that fact, Jay had to fight off a strong urge to step closer to River in a protective way.
Jay had always harbored a potent protectiveness for those around him, perhaps to the point of fault. While it got stronger as he grew to love a person, he knew that he would do what he could to stand between River and any danger that might come, despite the fact that they had only just met.
He shook his head slightly. Protect her from danger? Why had these thoughts even entered his head? They seemed incredibly rude, considering this boy had done absolutely nothing to induce them. But there just seemed to be something about this stranger... something peculiar that seemed to automatically lead to feelings of concern. How strange.
The boy introduced himself as Kaegan Deathmote before going on to ask, "What are you two doing?"
Before Jay could explain that they were simply getting acquainted for the first time, Kaegan continued, speaking directly to River. "And what are you."
Having the brilliant mind that he did, Jay's first thought was, There's no way he's never seen a girl before. But, luckily for his pride, he remembered that he was a moron who should think before speaking and refrained from voicing the question. Kaegan obviously meant the question another way.
River seemed taken aback by the question as well.
"That is an interesting question," she said. "Depends on what you mean, why would you wonder of that anyway?"
Though he was a little miffed at the "delicate" way Kaegan had put the question, he didn't show it. Instead, he thrust his hand in front of him for the second time in the last minute, saying cheerily, "Nice to meet you, Kaegan. My name's Jay, as I was just telling River here. And I must say, that really is quite a nice scarf."

Unlike the other boy, Kaegen did not see any beauty, or grace, or realistically anything special. Attractiveness didn't even register in the twisted little mind that worked relentlessly, locked away in a battered, half dead skull. Kaegen was here to survive, he was here to hate and keep moving, keep breathing and living. Love was a foreign concept, romance didn't exist. He had never understood the words, was nearly incapable of understanding their meanings. Kaegen was a survivor, he was something beyond the ordinary, and was constantly afraid.
He even missed how cold the girl was being, missed entirely almost every single social cue that could have been dropped. What he did not miss, however, was how the boy looked at his hands. Checking for something, checking for wounds, poison? He had just shaken hands with the girl, right? Or not. No, he hadn't. The girl hadn't shaken his hand and then he had checked it. Well, there was your answer. His hand was poisoned and he was seeing how obvious it was. So an assassin, then.
The girl was almost no help, she just asked for clarification, and assured him that it was an interesting question. Of course it was an interesting question, why else would he have asked it? Why would he have posed a question if not to appease his curiosity, his interest?
"You didn't answer my question. What are you, and why did you just avoid answering me."
He was also slightly miffed that the girl hadn't given him her name. Luckily the boy at least was slightly more polite, saying his name was jay, blue jay? bird? No, not a bird, more like a bay. Seagull? Was his name seagull? Kae settled on bay before accepting the compliment. He had no problem with assassins. People killed people all the time, it was always that way, and it always would be. He was mostly still here because there was something off about the girl, anyway. As soon as he found out what it was, he could kill her, and he would leave, and not lose a minute of sleep.
"Thank you. I like it. You look normal."

River looked at Kaegen, trying to figure this boy out was nearly impossible. He was definitely one of a kind, and intiguing for that matter. She’d only come across him briefly before, though heard a lot of different stories, rumours, opinions and warnings. Warnings that he was dangerous, undstable, some would even say he was crazy. River didn’t think he was crazy, he was perhaps just on edge, defensive? Running on instinct to survive in a crazy world, though perhaps loosing clear sight of what was really a danger and not at times. She had been through similar situations with her mother during her even younger years. At one point, River was even slightly afraid of her mother, though she was soon to realize, she was still the same person she had always been. Kaegen too, was really just a person.
River looked to Kaegen’s scarf, as Jay had just mentioned it. The Red-head hadn’t really payed it any attention previously, though she guessed it was a nice scarf.
Putting on a smile once more, River answered the Ravenclaw boy, «I’m River Florian Dewlight, daugter of Tom and Ann-Elisabeth Dewlight», she knew that probably wouldn’t satisfy his question, so she continued shortly after, «My dad’s a full-blood wizard, My mum’s a Vampire». She had a proud tone in her voice and her chin raised slightly as she spoke of her family. Keeping her eyes on Kaegen as she spoke, and running her fingers through her hair, to move any stray strands of red curls entering her face.
«I believe we’ve met before, Only barely though?», River asked the boy, and wondered if he even remembered. She figured probably not, but still decided to ask.
Man this guy is interesting, River thought, as she caught Kaegen’s comment of Jay looking normal, that’s not something one often hears people say when first meeting someone new.
