Nifflers and a Prefect Badge
♫
♫Open | July
Alan has been aimlessly wandering over the meadow, when something caught his eye. Something that just would not fit in with all the green that occupied the ground in the early summer. Yet there were bits of metal and pink and for a moment he just thought someone dropped some rubbish. Alan thought that was awful, because it could be found by some animal, which might get sick. Or maybe it was a Niffler who had dropped it! Could that be, could Alan meet a real Niffler?
He crouched as he reached for the object that got stuck between the soil and bits of grass, so when it was laying flat on his hand he brushed off the dust and dirt to take a closer look; noticing that it was not rubbish but a prefect badge! Was this real? He turned and twisted it to take a look at it, before he got to the solution that it indeed was real! Alan took a glance around, before he examined the Badge closely. He wondered whether he could keep it? Did it belong to anyone?
But most importantly was it really a Niffler who had gotten its paws onto a Prefect Badge? He would have to thank the Niffler if he found it.... should he look for it?

Special thanks to @Luna Choi who gave me her prefect Badge so that this thread even could exist.

Green. The color that reflected the grass, and leaves on the trees. And the water, if the Sun hit it just right. Though, mostly it was blue.
Had she not been in a muggle school, understanding why the grass was green would've made it seem like pure magic, done only by wizards. But after being in Science, and excelling, she knew exactly why the grass was green. Green was such a pretty color too, shame the Gryffindor house color was red. Green and maroon, or green and gold would've been cute. The former would've made Gryffindor the color of Christmas, though. And the latter would've made the house look like a leprechaun. Irish people would be pretty thankful, though.
Taking daily walks on the Grounds was a fun activity. She had met Saskia there, and the Hufflepuff was a down-to-earth person, and definitely was a polar opposite of Millie's outgoing personality. She had even met Min-seo again, and the two ended up forgiving and forgetting their past quarrels, and were now pretty positive on the people scale.
Millie hadn't been walking for very long, when she saw something shiny in the ground. Before she could investigate further, however, a boy Millie had only seen once before, had picked the shiny thing up. Curiosity crept through her skin like a disease, and she knew that asking wasn't going to hurt. So, she decided to investigate.
"What is it?" She asked, nearing the boy. Her amethyst eyes flickered to the shiny thing in his hand, and then back to the boy. Perhaps, in some case, curiosity was a sin.

Nifflers and a Prefect Badge
Alan was inspecting the badge and after a few more moments, he could see no indication that this prefect badge was not real. Alan stared at it for a moment, turning and twisting it around, before he closed his hand around the shiny metal.
He was promptly snapped out of his thoughts, when someone suddenly spoke to him. Twisting his head from his crouching position he noticed that the girl was vaguely familiar, making the second year wonder, where and when he could have met her before. She was a Gryffindor, that was obvious with her robes and the Gryffindor crest that was sewn on it. The standard Gryffindor robes one might say. So Alan just decided to answer the question.
”A Prefect Badge, it looks real! It's a weird place to drop it... do you think there was a Niffler involved?”, Alan had only heard stories about Nifflers and sometimes they appeared in the Quibbler or even the Daily Prophet. Alan usually got the Prophet, but was merely skimming through it to see whether there was anything interesting written in it. ”Shall we look for the Niffler?”, he asked, nervously, not wanting to bother anyone but also wanting to sate his curiosity. Alan would love to find a Niffler somewhere on the grounds! They looked so cute with their big eyes and their cute paws grasping anything and everything shiny.

Meenauh was sitting on the stone stairs leading the road down the hill from the castle. The very interesting passage about transfiguration was on repeat in her head for the last half a minute, so she decided to break the loop with some consciousness and look around to find the source of the interruption.
She packed her book into her bag and started to climb up to reach the couple. Just from a few steps from behind them, she heard Alan talking about a Niffler. A real Niffler? At Hogwarts? If that was the case, then some goblin did not quite a good job to keep an eye on one.
"A Niffler you say? The probabilities are quite low, but that would be hilarious. Do you know they are considered rodents?" she said, standing behind the couple so they couldn't see her just yet, "I mean, I don't know how we could catch one if we find one, especially if we would... er... enrage it," she laughed as she remembered how cute those beings were and she couldn't imagine how their rage would look like.
She turned around a saw Euphrasia and Alan talking in quite an exciting manner. Well, Alan talking in quite an exciting manner. Euphrasia seemed mysteriously calm as usual.Interacting with @Alan Vanes and @Euphrasia Millie

A Prefect badge? A Niffler? What would the tiny creature have to do with the badge? It was widely known that Nifflers loved anything shiny and sparkly, Millie learned that the hard way. The thought of wearing a necklace she had long outgrown, and feeling something tug the back of her neck, and choke the girl, made her shudder.
If the creature had gotten its hands on the badge, and accidently dropped it, shouldn't the two be more worried about finding the lost Prefect, and returning the badge? Millie was soon to voice her concerns to the boy, when a familiar voiced popped up. Quickly, with more anticipation, she turned around to see an even more familiar face; Meenauh!
"Do you really think a Niffler could be behind all of this?" Millie muttered quietly. Not to anyone in particular, though. "And Nifflers are like groundhogs or something, they would be so hard to catch!"
But figuring out what happened, and capturing a Niffler were only two of the problems. What would the three do if they did catch a Niffler? What if there wasn't even one around and they were making fools of themselves. Though, what would be the harm in trying?
Another curious thought peered into Millie's mind. Capturing a Niffler wouldn't be too hard if something shiny happened to be near-

Margo strolled lazily through the Hogwarts grounds, enjoying the early summers day. In that moment, her mind was not present in the meadow that she walked in, but instead was a few hours ahead in the Slytherin girls dormitory. She imagined herself receiving the promised owl from home and savouring each blackberry as she popped it in her mouth. Mmm, blackberries Oh how she craved them. They were by far her favourite fruits and every time she savoured their taste, memories of her happy childhood came to mind. It was her family’s tradition- in the way that some families had set Christmas decorations or baked the same cake to celebrate Easter each year. The White family celebrated birthdays with blackberries.
Usually, Margo would scorn any kind of tradition, but blackberries were an exception. The only exception She reminded herself. The last thing she wanted to be was a hypocrite.
Margo was so caught up in her purple stained fantasies that she didn’t realise she was nearing a group of people until she was standing right in front of them. By the looks of their robes, they were all Gryffindors. Margo smiled slightly- she really had a chance to stand out here. The students all seemed to be talking about a lost prefect badge and a potential niffler on the loose. Margo had read about nifflers- cuddly looking creatures who liked gold more than anything else imaginable. She could only imagine how fun it would be to chase after a creature who might not even exist, and all the while surrounded by a category of students she had never really been around before.
”Shall we look for the niffler?” Margo heard the only boy out of the three students ask. When she heard one of the girls mention enraging a niffler she couldn’t help but smirk, though it was meant to be more friendly than anything else. The idea of a fluffy little treasure hunter attacking somebody was something that would make anyone smile, Margo reasoned before she opened her mouth to speak.
”Hi, I’m Margo. Could you use an extra pair of hands in capturing the niffler? I’d go and offer my hoarding services to it instead but the whole problem is that we don’t know it’s location.” she joked.

Nifflers and a Prefect Badge
The second year shrugged slightly, he was not sure if there really was a Niffler behind this. But if that was the case he did not want to miss the chance! It sounded way too much like an adventure he would enjoy and imagine what he could tell Griffith, if he found a real Niffler. The professor surely would like to know if there are any creatures roaming around the castle.
”Looking for it would not hurt so let us think... N-Niffler like shiny things; where would be shiny things on the Grounds?”, he asked, fiddling with the hem of his robe's sleeves. He was slightly nervous as he did not know many of them. He remembered seeing that one girl before; at the ball that was held for Gryffindor. He could not remember her name, did she even tell him? He was not sure, he just remembered that he cleaned her dress because it was completely drenched in punch, because of that one boy; Kyle. He hoped that Marla was all right, after all she went with him and he seemed mad.
Alan has never tried to catch a Niffler, so his first sign to look for were other shiny things. He smiled nervously, looking at the group of students, waiting for any input that they had to offer.

Nifflers and a Prefect Badge
Euphrasia and Alan were now standing in a circle, discussing a potential Niffler, when another girl, Margo as she introduced herself, joined them. The only non-lion of the group. Not that Meenauh had any prejudices (actually, quite the contrary as she spent the whole year proving there was no difference), but to state that she was a very unfamiliar face compared to the others.Interacting with @Alan Vanes, @Euphrasia Millie and @Margo White
"Hello, Margo, nice to meet you," she greeted her without disclosing any additional information, "and by hoarding services you mean that you store in your pockets tons of shiny jewellery that we could use? Because that would really help us immensely!"
She smiled at Margo and listened to Alan, then tried to think logically of a way to succeed in searching for a Niffler. Before she could finish her thinking, she started to talk without having the result formed fully in her mind:
"So, going for the Niffler would make it ineffective as we're outside the grounds and they are pretty huge for us four to cover them all, so what we could do is to try attracting it to us! Yeah. If we would have more shiny things, we could scatter them all around, trying to cover the area as large as possible, and then just hide and wait for it to appear and steal everything. And then we'll hunt it down. Somehow," she liked her idea but the finale was not that reassuring as she didn't manage to think of a way to actually catch it.

If her imagination wasn't as insane as it was, Millie would've deemed everyone in the group insane, and left. However, she had an imagination as wild as the wind. It became more and more practical in her everyday life, than normal thinking had. But she was a kid, who gave a damn?
A new girl arrived, and introduced herself as Margo. "Nice to meet you, I'm Millie," She chirped, smiling. Meenauh said something about shiny things. Millie curiously looked at Margo; did she have anything shiny?
Then a certain idea popped into Millie's head. She looked at the prefect badge, and took note of its marking and coloring. It shined in the sunlight, and she knew why the curious lil Niffler would want to take it. But a new thought appeared in her mind, why did the small group want to even lure out a Niffler in the first place?
"I wonder if the Prefect who lost it is looking for it?" She thought aloud. The prefect badge needed to be returned, regardless. How would they return it anyway, without being suspicious? Even if they did return it, then the prefect in question would immediately think that the group stole it. What was gonna happen then? Would they tell on the professors, thinking that one of them stole it?
Anxiety activated.

Nifflers and a Prefect Badge
“I don’t take it upon myself to carry diamonds around in my pockets if that’s what you’re asking, but as it happens I do have these.” Margo said, pulling out a small drawstring bag from her robes. She opened it and poured out a few of its contents into her palm to show the others. They were small kitten pendants, each one glinting in the sunshine with a different design. They definitely weren’t made out of any precious metals, but they were sparkly to the eye.
“My grandmother gave them to me.” Margo’s added, wanting to clarify that she wasn’t kitten obsessed and did NOT make little bracelets in her spare time. She loved her grandma, but the old lady didn’t really understand what Margo meant when she said she made her own clothes. Besides, Margo was more of a dog person- if someone gave her something decorated with an image of her family’s dog, Mimi, she would treasure it until her dying breath.
Margo didn’t want to disclose any more personal information so promptly shut her mouth and took a steadying breath through her nose. The girl who’d introduced herself as Millie suggested a more practical use of their time- returning the lost badge. However, Margo thought that it would be much more interesting to search for a possible niffler rather than an existing person... a conclusion that definitely had nothing to do with the one Slytherin prefect whom she did not particularly want to return a badge to.
She wasn’t avoiding her... just taking a break. A niffler hunt was much more fun than the tension that would ensue if the prefect badge belonged to Ruby Cazares. Besides, Margo was in an interesting position. She was surrounded by three Gryffindor strangers, each with different quirks to be discovered. Time for experiment number one.
“So, are we looking for a prefect or a niffler?”
