Evening Well Spent
Reid dumped a medium sized sack onto the soft floor of the Grounds, crouching over it as he opened it. Inside was the missing set of Wizard's Chess, broken pieces and the board that accompanied it. He had found it in a corner of the Hufflepuff Commons, untouched and in disrepair - much to his dismay. It was after classes, so he only had so much time to actually complete and finish what he was going to do. Beside him was two haphazardly stacked books, his notes and writing utensils.
One of it was his Charms class book, looking a little more worn than most of the first year's textbooks. It looked as if someone had accidentally singed a part of the cover. Perhaps the owner had a bit to do with it. But said owner was busy sorting the pieces by color, white and red.
The pieces barely resembled anything of a queen or a knight, but more of just strewn shards that resembled odd shapes. If he looked hard enough, he'd made out a crown, perhaps a sword if he was trying hard enough.
A breeze rolled by that had the young wizard shiver, glancing over his shoulder with a quizzical look. He went to a part of the Grounds where he assumed no one usually went to, he didn't see a lot of students hanging out here after all. He sat himself down upon the grass, probably staining his trousers in the process. He took his chestnut wand out, using the end to move the pieces about the floor to sort them. He was wanting to practice his 'Reparo' charms spell, a rather handy one for when he eventually breaks his glasses.
Reid knew himself better than anyone and there would be a point when his reading glasses most likely would be abused and thrown about. He took a deep breath. The air was thick with a woody scent, filled with the smell of grass and mildew. It gave off a rather musty scent that sometimes reminded him of his evenings with his muggle friends in Derby, they frequented a park there.
Reid grimaced at the memory, he hated making himself feel down and out. He soon forgot it after whispering, "Reparo." with the necessary movements. A sharp hiss and the slight movement of the pieces was all he got from it. Well he messed up somewhere. This caused him to open up his book and slowly flip through the pages in search of the spell.

Chloe was walking down to the grounds, taking in the fresh air and listening to the birds chirping. She had wanted to play Wizard's Chess. She had seen a Wizard's Chess game in the corner in the Hufflepuff common room a few days ago, she just didn't have time at the moment to play it. Not like she really knew how to, but she was hoping to teach herself. When she had finished her classes that day, she went back to the common room only to find the game gone.
Chloe was wanting to clear her head by relaxing and playing Wizard's Chess, but without the board, she had to change her plans. She decided to take a walk, making her way out of the castle, past the docks toward the edge of the Forbidden Forest. She stood there, standing at the tree line for a moment before turning around. In the distance, she saw something- or was it someone- crouching over something.
Chloe's curiosity got the best of her as she went over to examine who this could be. As she got closer, she recognized the robes as another Hufflepuff student and- was that the Wizard's Chess pieces? And the board? Chloe furrowed her brows together as she got closer, trying to see who the boy was who had taken them.
"Um, excuse me?" Chloe said with a slight attitude. "Did you take that out of the Common Room?" She couldn't see the boy's face, and didn't realize the pieces were broken and he was trying to fix it.

The tone of voice and the way it was said was definitely very familiar once he heard it. The last time he heard it, it came from an annoyed house mate who he just interuppted with Exploding Snaps. It was most likely none other than Chloe Baggins. Reid looked over his shoulder, slightly squinting against the sun's rays. "Are you going to be annoyed with me every time we meet?" he laughed, balancing himself. Reid was still crouch, his forearms being used to support himself against his thighs.
His hair was much more well kept than the first time they met and there didn't seem to be any soot marks on his features that would indicate any explosion. He grunted as he pushed himself up from the ground, his knee had some patches of grass on it. Reid folded his arms in amusement, closely resembling her posture from the Common Room.
But once again, the girl had caught him doing something he possibly shouldn't be doing. Reid kept his arms crossed and yet his wand pointed towards one of the gathered pieces. He waved it in the correct manner and spoke, "Reparo."
In an instant, the sharp clay shards of a pawn came together. The noises came in a clinking manner, coming together till it made one whole hollow sound. Reid tried to not look as smug as he could, considering it was one of the first times he actually accomplished the spell. He slowly turned his head towards the girl, brows lifted just slightly, "That was actually the first time I did that."
Reid slipped the wand into his pocket and let his arms fall to the sides. "I took it out of the Common Room to fix it, plus I wanted to work on my Reparo spell. I'll return the board, I promise you'll get it back by the end of today." A slight chuckle came from him as he slowly crouched down again. The young boy moved the complete pawn back to the side and looked back up at Chloe.
"You'll probably get it back faster if you help me though - just saying." If she had time, that'd be nice. He was always fond of company from whoever could bother to lend their time to him. That and it was all in good practice for the both of them, he hoped that he'd eventually be able to do more than one object with Reparo.

Chloe relaxed, laughed when she realized it was Reid who she had been annoyed with. She had forgiven him when he interrupted her reading with his Exploding Snaps, now she's doing the interrupting. "Reid!" She laughed again. "I didn't realize it was you."
Chloe watched in fascination as he fixed one of the pieces. "I believe you. Lose the smug look though." She laughed again, looking from the piece that had just become whole again back to Reid. She examined his face, making sure he didn't miss any of the soot from the Exploding Snaps. She looked back down at the rest of the broken pieces and crouched down beside him. "I didn't know the pieces were all broken!" She picked up a knight and its pieces, examining them in her hand. She nodded and pulled her chestnut wood and unicorn hair wand out of her pocket, pointing it at the knight. "So what do I do?" She looked over at Reid, wanting to make sure she did the spell correctly before she accidentally blasted her hand off.
"How do I move the wand? I know what to say, just not how to move it." She frowned, hesitant. She put the pieces down together on the ground, just in case.

"Good, I was hoping to find someone to help." he joked. At her command, the smug look on his features disappeared and he scooted over to give Chloe some more space. He didn't have his glasses with him this time, yet it was on his face so frequently that he almost unconsciously tried to push some invisible spectacles up his bridge.
"So, the movement of reparo is ..." Reid held his wand up, moving it across one of the broken pieces on the floor. It closely resembled a messy spiral coming inward. "Move it like you want it to come together, as long as your wand is on the object of course. The professor mentioned something like, focusing too. That's pretty important."
Clearly he wasn't a teacher, but he did it a few more times to show her the movement. He had no siblings and so he was never actually sure of how to 'teach', it made him conscious to even tell her how to do the mending charm. What if she just doesn't do it? But Reid took his own advice and spoke 'reparo', waving his wand to fix the king piece. It helped him to focus by only thinking about the piece he wanted to fix, it seemed like the best bet.
In a split second, the King stood upright, dirty but repaired. Reid set it aside, smiling slightly as he sat himself against the grass instead of crouching. "How's Hogwarts for you so far? Do you like it?" he asked, pointing his wand at another piece. Many of the opinions or statements he's heard tend to be positive, some of comment about missing home and he couldn't help but agree. Life at home didn't have magic, it had quiet evenings.
But the excitement of this world was slowly replacing that feeling of homesickness. His feelings tend to be a light buzz, like a soft tune or white noise in the background in comparison to his worries here. Most of his worries here was fitting in, it was getting along with people like Chloe and hopefully never finding a reason to be annoyed or upset.

Chloe watched closely as he did the movement a few times to show her. She sat down beside him, crossing her legs and focused on the knight. She moved her wand just as Reid had. "Reparo," She said, hoping to see it work. The pieces moved, but just a little bit. She huffed, slightly frustrated that it didn't work. She tried again, concentrating hard. "Reparo." She said just a little bit louder. She watched, a smile on her face as the pieces came together slowly. She looked up at Reid, a smug look now on her face. She was proud she had been able to cast it correctly.
She smiled at him and shrugged. "I'm liking Hogwarts. I haven't really met many people yet and don't have many friends. I've met you, Serena, and Felicity, she's a girl in Ravenclaw, that's about it. I think I'll like it more when I have made some friends to go on adventures or explore or even simply go to classes with." She laughed softly, hoping that he would speak up and say they were friends. She didn't want to assume they were friends if they were simply acquaintances. She was hoping, though. He had been nice enough so far. "Do you like Hogwarts?" She asked, genuinely curious about his thoughts.

Reid watched her hand closely, seeing the way she moved and flicked the wand to make sure that she did it correctly. "There you go." he laughed. "Now who's smug?" Reid reached over and inspected the piece, nodding in approval as he placed it to the side. His wand at beside him and the boy was slightly leaning back to let his back rest, he's been crouched long enough. "How do I like Hogwarts?" His hand came up to brush his eye out of habit, his shoulder awkwardly shrugging.
"I like it a lot so far, I thought I was going to have a lot more trouble adjusting actually. But like you, I've met some nice people so far." It was a partial truth, he's had some issues along the way that he didn't expect to come from a wizarding school. It was called 'drama' and he wasn't liking the experience of it so far, especially when it involved someone who he just got close with.
Yet his nonchalant answer was partially to release him from disclosing his girl problems with Chloe. But it was bothering him so much that he began to double back on not sharing, perhaps just a little won't hurt. "But weird stuff happened between me and another person, so it's been weird." he added, waving his wand a little. Reid abruptly stopped, realizing he could have something accidentally go off.
The wand was placed beside him and he brought one leg up to place his chin above it. "I should invite you to some of me and my friends for some 'adventure' though, I think you'd like them a lot." He could use more party members to the group, he found it cool to have a solid group of friends to go with at Hogwarts. Maybe he could make a friend out of Chloe yet.
As the thought flashed in his mind, so did the nature of comic books. The boy clicked his tongue and shook his own head in disbelief, "I forgot that I wanted to still trade you comics for Beedle and Bard." Was that the name of the book she was reading? Maybe he could educate a few people in the fine establishment called the comic store, filled with exciting literature.
Yet he surely wouldn't call it literature, he doubt Chloe would either. But the offer still stood and he was ready to spew out the next cool hero. There was a lot of things he wanted to talk with Chloe for, he just didn't it to seem irrelevant.

OOC Feedback: You're hitting the mark each time so that's pretty good! 200 can be pretty difficult to churn out sometimes, but I wanted to give you some feedback after reading some of the posts. You give pretty good detail but cut yourself short too soon in some cases. Any little bit of detail can add more to the roleplay when it's used at the right time!
Like with Chloe's experience with Hogwarts so far, it's not bad to have a sentence or two about what she's gone through so far. Maybe in another thread, she really clicked with another character and it could bring back strong memories that you can squeeze a paragraph into, even one sentence. Word count aside, it adds a nice layer to your writing when you write about how she's been adjusting so far to Hogwarts.
If you don't have any of that yet, maybe even just talk about her mannerisms. How does she sit and is she the type of person to just sit still? Maybe she fiddles with something in her hand or has a tick that is something she does! :^) Mannerisms really add a nice touch to the character, you can kind of figure out the person someone is with how they act around people. It kind of helps the other character read the person sometimes too!
These don't have to be added anytime soon, I just want to give you some feedback!

Yeah, my problem is that when I DO hit the 200 word line, I feel like my writing either sucks or seems repetitive, I guess. I struggle a bit with that part. A lot of the time, I come just short of 200, usually hitting about 170ish or so.
Chloe laughed, rolling her eyes. "I have a right to be smug. I did the spell right." She teased him, laughing. She listened to his Hogwarts experience so far and nodded. "There really are some great people here.... but I'll listen to the weird stuff if you want to tell me about it. No pressure, you don't have to talk to me about it if you don't feel comfortable, just know that I'll listen anytime." Chloe smiled warmly at him. She wanted him to know that she would be there as a friend anytime he wanted.
Chloe leaned back on her arms, sitting in a more comfortable position than the way she had been. She was always good at listening. She grinned excitedly as he talked about inviting her for some adventure things with his other friends. She nodded quickly. "I would love to adventure with you and your other friends!" She blushed slightly, she loved being included in things. She wasn't included in much back home, so maybe that's why she tried so hard to be a good friend.
As Reid brought up trading their books again, she nodded again. "I completely forgot about that! I would love to read some of your comics! You can borrow The Tales of Beedle the Bard as long as you want to." She smiled, subtly correcting him. She wasn't sure what these comics were supposed to be, but she would love to find out. She liked Reid. He would be a good friend, she thought to herself.

There was often a certain type of attention Reid paid the people he talked to, it was in between engrossed and fidgety. His fingers intertwined themselves with the grass below, either with a gentle yanking or a full uproot. The green blades would dance between his digits before being discarded as Chloe talked.
Even after that, he'd have something in his hand to mess around with. But Reid caught himself and stopped it, knowing how rude it could possibly be. He inwardly cheered at the Hufflepuff's enthusiasm, he loved to see how eager other people could become. There were times where he couldn't offer this himself and it was usually rough getting himself to open up to people.
But Chloe seemed to be one of those people who he didn't mind, perhaps because he didn't exactly feel judged by the girl. "Perfect." Reid wolfishly grinned. Did he have any comics on him? He reached over his book bag, pulling it closer to him by the leather strap. It took some of the earth beneath it, perhaps he had a few books in there after all.
The young wizard rummaged through his mess and carefully pulled a tucked away comic. The cover had a red and yellow hero on it, a man who was drawn with lightning around him. "Before I came here, all I really knew was uh - muggle stuff. I don't know if you guys have comics about ... wizards?" Muggles made stories of superhuman muggles, he wondered if wizard-kind had stories of brilliant wizards instead in the form of comic strips.
Did they even need that? What really enchanted him was the moving paintings, maybe they had moving comic strips. He felt a little silly for giving her such a rudimentary piece of literature. Reid held them out to Chloe, looking a little timid about the whole ordeal too. "It's not much but it's issue number one, I was just rereading it the day before."
He sounded chipper about it, not boastful but a little too excited about this. He enjoyed it and he hoped she would too in some way - if not, hopefully the book she gave him would be. Reid didn't normally go out of his way to read, but was an exception he wouldn't mind making. It might just teach him a thing or two about this world.

I'm sorry for the absence! There's just stuff I needed to prioritize. But your writing isn't bad at all! You write with very good grammar from what I've seen, don't sell yourself short! I haven't felt your writing to be repetitive. It might get easier for you the more you write, plus getting to know your character is another great layer to help you write more. If there's anything I can to help you feel comfortable with this, please feel free to tell me. :^)
