Walking was somewhat of a mystery to the professor. Where people going somewhere, or going away from somewhere? You could never tell just by seeing someone walking, and it was one of the mysteries that could never really be solved. Even if you figured one person out, you could turn around and see someone else walking. Each person presenting a mystery every time they decided to set their bodies in motion. It was, perhaps, a foolish thing to be pondering. But pondering odd things was somewhat of a past time of his, having been starved of good conversations for the past several years. He liked talking with people, and if there were no other people around him he would settle for talking to himself.

The man was terrifying, and terrifying was putting it lightly. Everyone has a presence. You go to them and you instinctively have some sort of an idea of what kind of person they are. Grandmothers make you feel at home the minute they look at you, businessmen have a knack for making you nervous. Morfran has an aura of power, almost.

A sphere that encompassed anyone who could get a decent look at him. A sphere of influence that made it clear that this man was dangerous. That he was deadly. The prfessor was tall, somewhere in between six and seven feet. He wore a heavy leather coat that reached down towards his ankles. The belt meant to help fasten the coat was hanging unused from either side.

Inside the coat could be seen a few wands. If the man moved you could see more. A collection of them hidden inside his coat. He wore heavy leather gloves, and boots caked in mud. The boots in question were standing on a small grassy rise. He was watching the students walk back and forth, and because he had nothing better to do he was wondering about it. The students were kind of cute, honestly. Little people with nothing on their mind but happy times and gobstones.

To be perfectly honest, gobstones sounded like a lot of fun. He hadn’t played in a long, long time. Not since he left hogwarts. That, or exploding snap. But as he was making up his mind to go and join in a little girl that had wandered too close chasing a butterfly looked up. And then Morfran looked down. And then the girl screamed an ear splitting scream and ran away crying. Looking at the silver lining, this did mean he would have more alone time to think about walking.

If this happened during class, he was in for some cringe worthy lessons

Maya had spent most of her day in the abandoned rehearsal room. Only rarely would there be students in there to "try" to start a band, but other than that, it was often vacant. Maya enjoyed to play piano throughout the day, considering that her classes for the upper grade levels were scattered randomly throughout the week. There were some days where she had class back-to-back and some days with nothing.

Finished in the rehearsal room, Maya decided that it was best to get some fresh air to clear out her mind. Maya always had a lot on her mind, but she was never the type to show that. She believed that showing any sort of emotion was a result of weakness. If she were to show emotion, however, it would be on her own, without a witness. The minute she stepped foot on the grounds, Maya's mind was clear.

It was evening outside and Maya was walking through the corridors of the castle. She made her way towards the larger grounds of the property when she saw a very large man. She had heard about him from the other professors. He was very different than the other professors-- he had such a feeling about him when he was around. Maya could not put her finger on it, but it was a very attractive feeling, however, the man was not attractive himself. Even so, Maya was not one to be in relationships in general.

Hiding in the shadows, she saw that there was a little girl who happened to cross paths with him. The minute she looked up at him after trying to catch a butterfly, she screamed. Maya squinted her eyes at how high pitched the scream was. When the girl left the scene, Maya walked up to the man. Poor guy, he must get that often, she thought, thinking with some emotion.

"With the way you handled that situation, you must get that often," she said, coming out of the shadows in her red cloak, treading on the ground behind her, to the Care of Magical Creatures professor.

"I'm Galim. I teach Muggle Studies," Maya introduced herself to him. Typically she was never that social, but she thought that with how much this professor was probably having a hard time fitting in, she would give him the time of day... Or in this case, evening.

“Thankfully, I was not hired to be nice to little children with butterflies on the brain. I was hired to teach the care of magical creatures. Unless that girl was a magical creature, I should say that went rather well.”

And then he realized how poorly worded it was. Butterflies on the brain. If she heard, she was going to sulk for the next week. But if he apologized now, it would look like he was some crazy person who talked to his pockets. And he didn’t want that, especially not on a first meeting. He would much rather look like a cranky man that hated life. That was something he had experience in, at any rate.

“Well, I didn’t want to talk with her anyway, so I suppose it worked out. Bothersome children, making me insult butterflies. They are really quite interesting creatures.”

He satisfied both his want to not look like a complete moron, and his want to not have to deal with a sulking butterfly for the next few days. Still, he couldn't resist glaring down into one of the large leather jacket pockets as he said it. Why were butterflies so darn sensitive? Or at least, this kind was. One of the fastest butterflies in the world, they always keep one inch away from your fingers. Native americans had a legend that if you kept catching butterflies you would get amazing speed and reflexes.

They were almost right. They just had the wrong kind of butterfly. Some of her dust, and you would be twice as fast as you used to be. Of course, assuming she would give you any, and you didn't want to forcibly remove it by ripping off her wings.

She introduced herself as Galim, teacher of muggle studies. Did that mean that her first name
Was Galim, or her last name? Or maybe she only had one name that functioned as both? Regardless, it was the only name she gave and it was the one he was going to use. As soon as she had mentioned muggle studies, his respect for her had plummeted far. But no, that was entirely unfair.

After all, she hadn’t said she was a muggle culture advocate, just that she taught muggle studies. You could study something and not emulate it, it was just science, after all. Griffith himself had a intense dislike of muggles. He had spent a winter with a anime crazed stage magician that owned a body pillow of a pink haired cartoon girl, and never seen them the same way since.

His voice was soft, and contrasted harshly with his wilder appearance. It was the voice he used when he talked to creatures, and it naturally carried over to talking with people as well.

“I’m not sure if it’s a pleasure to meet your acquaintance or not, Professor Galim. My name is Professor Griffith, I teach Care of Magical Creatures. That over there is my stables.”

He gestured over to the desolate stone structure with chain domed pen that was now sitting by the edge of the forbidden forest. Gloomy, but somehow fitting in with the scenery. They were not so very far away, the blood smears on the chain dome hardly visible.

“What exactly about muggles do you study, Professor?”

The word "butterfly" seemed to take this man to another world. It felt as though it was a few minutes before his reality kicked back in and he realized that they were in the middle of a conversation. Perhaps his mind reflected reality, but to Maya, he was truly unresponsive at that point.

One thing she did admire was perhaps his ambition and passion for work. She also believed that the reason she is roaming around Hogwarts is to teach, not to meet with the children (however, that was a necessity as required by the Headmaster and Deputy Headmaster). Other than that, she would be keeping to her own and teaching within her classroom to students.

It is often to be rejected in the wizarding world through her studies of muggles. Most magical folk are not fans of muggles for various reasons. Reasons that coincide with lineage, superiority, faith, history and more. For some strange reason, she had a feeling that Griffith was not a man of the muggle world-- in fact, from how he greeted Maya in return, he was perhaps in question. She looked at the stable in which he would be residing most of his Hogwarts career in with simple memories. While living among nature and its animals is something Maya is not opposed to, the way the stable had looked with its stone structure and gloominess, reminded her of home in Israel.

Maya had guessed correctly when he asked what about Muggles does she teach in her class. That was perhaps one of the main questions to ask as most magical folk do not want their kind to truly mingle with the non-magical folk. The more they learn, the more magical folk become curious of the new world and intermarry.

"Professor Griffith, you're not trying hard enough to hide your disgust for muggles," she called him out. Her lips curled in a small smile and she finally answered his question. "I teach them the culture, philosophy and science of the muggle world," she said. Nonetheless, Maya was proud of her curriculum that she had created as it was perhaps one of the only ones in any subject relating to muggles for magic folk.

"Tell me, when did you disgust in muggles begin?" she asked, creating small talk that she controlled.

She wasn’t wrong, he hadn’t really been trying. Or at least not hard, not hard enough to conceal anything. It had been a half-hearted attempt at subterfuge so as not to outright insult this professor. There were professors he wanted to insult. Those of them that might make friends, that might seek him out. But this one seemed more sullen, done with the world. His kind of people. It was, he knew, a bit hypocritical of him.

He tried his best to keep the creatures around him happy, but at the same time tried his best to keep the people around him away. Why he gave creatures the benefit of the doubt constantly, forgiving their mistakes again and again was a mystery to some. But to him, it made perfect sense. And people did things that made sense, didn’t they?

Well, most people did. He wasn’t sure about her. She had just admitted to teaching muggle culture. He was almost ready to go ahead and tell her his experiences when he caught himself. Not only would that be a conversation in which he would have no ground to stand on, which meant he would have to take everything she said at face value, but that would also involve sharing some of his past.

It wasn’t a hard problem to fix, he would just be vague. Vagueness was his friend and his enemy, a bittersweet relationship full of lies. It was an oddly poetic way to think about it, to be sure. But he wasn’t sure of a better way.

“I’m sure you’ve heard of some muggle customs we would not agree with. Or, at least, that I would not agree with. They have no wands or magic, so have made things to copy magic’s effects. When they built their own wand with a single spell, what did they make? Was it accio, or locomotor, something useful and relatively harmless? No, they built a worse version of the killing curse. It doesn’t even always kill. It’s pathetic.

And you know what makes me worry, Professor Galim? It’s faster and more deadly the bigger it is. If I fought a man with a muggle wand, I fear I might lose. That’s unprecedented, and more than a little troubling. I hope that you are teaching your students this. Or at least giving them fair warning. Some students seem to think it would be a good idea to integrate our societies.”

A cranky doomsday rant. The day people liked those was the day pizza lost it's flavor. Perfect.

Maya crossed her arms, walked towards leaned against a nearby wall that was near the both of them while listening to his rant on why he disliked the muggles. It was extremely entertaining to listen to most of the information he had believed to be true, butchered from its true meaning. Muggle wand?

While she was listening intently on the crap that was spewing out of his mouth, she began to bite the inside of her cheeks out of boredom. Her chestnut eyes, still having eye contact with the tall man, was waiting for his monologue to be over.

When he finally ended, she took a deep breath. Quickly collecting her thoughts, she started.
"Very interesting perspective, Professor Griffith. Please explain to me more about this muggle wand you speak of," she said, having a hunch that perhaps it was what he was referring to as the guns that muggles used during war. If so, he had no idea what he was talking about. Most magical folk who do not have the experience of the nonmagical world understand-- which is a common phenomenon. It is the reason why, after her own experiences, she believed it was important to teach muggle studies to young witches and wizards.

"You seem to have a lot to say about Muggles, and I can tell that you're not even finished," she observed, "but tell me, Griffith, have you ever stepped foot on muggle soil enough to judge them for who they are?" Maya thought that perhaps adding in the ethical perspective would make her understand this man's hatred for muggles. Perhaps there wasn't a bone of pure hatred in his body and instead, it was misunderstanding from what he's learned from others or quickly saw-- not from what was truly learned from his own experience.

"Mrs. Galim, your sarcasm is thick as a dragon's scales, but not nearly so lustrous. You do not seem the kind of woman to enjoy company, and I am not that kind of man. As befuddling and interesting you may think my twisted worldview to be.

Arguing and discussing are used to make the other person listen to or understand where you are coming from. But realize that I have no interest in illustrating my point for you, and posses no reason why I would elaborate on my points regardless.

I suppose none of us are ever finished, Mrs. Galim. Not really. But for now, I do believe I shall be done. I may have stepped foot on their soil, and I may not have. But I am not the kind of man who would peel a scale before he's scraped under, Mrs. Galim.

I have been cursed with an inexplicable hatred for everyone, and you happen to fall into that category. Please feel free to hate me, or mock me from a distance. I'm not the kind of man who cares whether or not you do it to my face."

She had seemed interesting enough, but the Professor had caught himself. His goal was to not make friends here. He would teach well, because he was being paid to do so. He would stay, because it was safe. But if anyone found out what he was doing and actually cared about him, they would try to make him stop. That was not a good plan. She would be annoyed, or spiteful, harboring ill thoughts even if she pretended she didn't. She seemed like the kind of person who would pretend they didn't hear you when you asked them to pass the butter. That would suck, true.

And besides, people were annoying.

It seemed as though a nerve was struck. With one two simple phrases, a speech was spoken back to her in reply. Her body, still against the wall near him, felt heavy. She was bored listening to his rant. Though, in a way, she also felt bad. He truly did not get to understand the muggle world and was already hating on them.

Maya had also seen the amount of insecurities that dwelt in him in regards to how she was given permission to mock or hate him. It was, perhaps, a search for projection of what has always happened out when he was younger. Luckily, Maya was not a psychologist, so her thoughts had no fact, just a feeling.

"You and I have a lot in common, Griffith. The only difference... I don't judge a book by its cover. I would have thought from the way children look at you, you would have understood that yourself," she said, her red lips that match her red robe stretching into a smile.

"Friendships do not matter to me. Neither do enemies. I am here for one thing and that is to teach what I am passionate about and to ensure that students grow into accepting, understanding and find a positive outlook on the muggle world. It is a shame that you haven't gotten that in your lifetime," she finished sternly.

Of course they had a lot in common. All people did, really. You could pair up any given two people and you would be able to find several things they had in common with each other. But that was besides the point. The woman in front of him was, no doubt, similar. He scanned her once, checking for the first time to see who exactly he was talking to.

She wore a red cloak, as red as whatever lipstick she was using. That probably meant she had either watched snow white too many times or just liked the aesthetic. It didn't look half bad, honestly. But it was an interesting fashion statement.

"Has it ever occurred to you just how flawed that expression is? Sometimes a book goes out of it's way to be judged harshly based on it's cover. Why not let it? The author had control over the book, just as he had control over the cover.

So is that what you're doing, then? Teaching me? Because I'm close minded enough for that to be a waste of time."

He swallowed the bile that was starting to rise up. She was working to tear down the deliberately placed divide between the wizard and muggle world. Maybe not indirectly, but it was clear that was what the end result was going to be. This woman was trying to start a war.

Perhaps the skull of this man was too thick that nothing was able to tear through to him-- not even quotes of cliche. In fact, while the quote was only used to portray a point she was trying to convey, Griffith was focused on the quote's meaning than on hers.

Showing no emotion, she listened. There was nothing that she could say to make people like him understand and realistically, it wasn't her job. Maya's job was to start the open-mind and give knowledge to those whom are young and curious; who want to explore the world for their own experience and not for another.

"Griffith, I couldn't agree more. It seems that teaching you is like teaching the Whomping Willow to stop it's whomping ways," she said.

Maya wondered if it was still worth being here talking to this man who she works with. Instead of taking chances of seeing how he would respond, she decided that enough was enough. Their conversation was going nowhere.

"Good night, professor," she said, putting her red hood over her head and walking away from the COMC professor. "Pleasure to know where your values lie," she added, and she had then disappeared in the shadows towards the castle.
