It was seven in the evening on a crisp, cool Wednesday. There was a slight breeze coming from the north, a warning that colder days were to come. Hogwarts had only recently started the 2017 School Year, many of the new students were still trying to find their place in the world and many of the returning students fell back into their routines rather quickly. He was always entertained by the wide eyed expressions many of the first years donned when they saw Howarts for the very first time. To a child accustomed to magic, these days many children are exposed to both mundane Muggle experiences as well as the fantastical benefits of their magical lineage. Seeing such a display, dare one say reliance, of magic was awe-inspiring for most.

"Greg!" A booming voice shouted through cupped hands as a one Solomon Lear called out the name of a lost boy, a friend, it was hard to say. He appeared to be alone of course in this grassy field where the sod was somewhat overgrown and speckled with wilting wildflowers that would soon turn brown as the winter months took hold, it looked like the sort of place one would bring their livestock to graze. There was a rough wooden fence that bordered what might be an acre plot of land, dotted with small trees that had not yet started to change but the fringe of some of the leaves had started to brown. The bushes had already started to shed prematurely, half bald with some dry leaves that continued to hold on. Their twisted, dark branches partially exposed.

"GREG!" Solomon called again. Some might see the middle aged Professor of the Care of Magical Creatures an eccentric, he did not carry himself in the same way as the other Professors. Hardly a conformist he donned tan leather armor that seemed to be in good repair despite being well-worn with evidence that it might have even saved his life a few times considering the deep gashes that characterized the surface. He was not a young man of course, hefty be was about eighty pounds (thirty-six kilograms) overweight and his armor fit snugger than it should but he was still able to don the same armor he wore when he trained his first bicorn, unsuccessfully but it was a valiant effort some would say. He was not able to wrangle creatures like he used to, a part of him wanted to believe they fought back harder these days but he knew the truth even if it was hard to see it whenever he looked into the mirror. Still he was able to recapture some sense of youth here among the young.

"Greg!" Solomon shouted again, no louder than the first, in fact his voice was beginning to grow hoarse. He would sweep his arm through a bush, a distressed starling would fly out crying as it did so. "No, not there," he muttered gruffly to himself out loud as he crouched onto the ground and peered through the bush at ground level. All he saw was those twisted, thorny branches, no Greg. His knees were not what they used to be but with some effort the husky former adventurer was back on his feet with a grunt and perhaps an audible click of his left hip.

"I know you could not have gotten too far, Greg!" He repeated as he meandered about, occasionally stopping to look behind a rock or a small shrub. He was certainly the type to leave no stone unturned or unlifted for that matter as he lifted one stone to reveal a disinterested salamander that attempted to scurry off before he snatched the small reptile in his bare hands.

Wednesday mornings seemed to drag on for Dymphna, being in the middle of the school week. Getting up earlier than usual didn't help matters but she had trouble sleeping the night before so there she was, wandering the grounds with her journal in hand. Whatever plants she would run across would be pressed into the pages or perhaps used as ingredients in Herbology or Potions. Bringing her own ingredients would make her seem distinguished, or so she thought. Some of the plants seemed to be green still but others had started to change. Be careful, she thought, not wanting to use any during classes that had gone brown.

There was a call from nearby that the Ravenclaw couldn't quite make out. It wasn't something to be concerned with so she plucked a few leaves from a tree that looked interesting. Then it happened again! Still, she couldn't make out the words. Curious and a bit worried that someone had gotten hurt and needed help getting to the infirmity (or worse, St. Mungo's) she hurried towards the sound. Hopefully it wasn't serious. Her mother worked at St. Mungo's so she knew first hand that it wasn't a very pleasant place to go at times. Especially if the injury was very traumatic.

"Merlin," Dymphna muttered to herself before coming across a familiar face. Professor Lear seemed different than most professors. He certainly dressed differently. Hearing him call out for a third time, she was finally close enough to make out what he was saying. Who was this Greg? Uncertain but wanting to help, she sucked in a big breath and shouted, "Greg!" As if this Greg person would even know what her voice sounded like. Well, at least they would know that someone was looking for them, with the two of them carrying on as they were. "Professor," the blonde nodded in greeting. "I hope you don't mind but I heard you shouting. I'd like to help."

Why do I always awkwardly end up following people by accident?

Ben may have been a bit of a nerd, but he still liked to keep himself in good shape. Maybe that was a muggle Football player trait he would never lose. It was this trait that had the young Ravenclaw student running laps through the grounds in the morning. He was still deathly afraid of the trees, lake, shadowy areas, and anything that wasn't mostly open grass. This world of magic was so full of unknowns to him still that he was worried something would eat him or try to kill him. The runner kept to the more open areas of the grounds surrounding Hogwarts as he did his daily routine.

I hope this girl doesn't think I'm jogging behind her to be weird.

Before he had a chance to pass her or try to change course, he heard what she heard. Some voice was calling out a name nearby. That seemed a bit odd and the girl, one from his house, seemed to be moving over to investigate. Once again, before Ben could make his presence known, she called out the name as well. He also had no clue who Greg was but these two seemed to know. Must be a student who got lost? Killed by some strange creature? Turned into a toad and wandered into the lake?

"I'm not Greg, I'm Ben," he commented as he approached the pair ahead of him. "What's going on?"

One of them was a teacher he still had very little personal experience with so far. The armored man was the creature teacher. Ben forgot the real terminology for it but creature teacher rhymed which made it easier to remember. For his neck trick, Ben would need to remember the name. No such luck this time around but it wouldn't matter. Professors made it real easy to get around forgetting their name. Just call them Professor. The girl's name would be harder to get away with but he had a plan. Hopefully she wouldn't take offense if he failed to get it right.

"Nice to see you again, by the way." Ben said to Dymphna with a smile, knowing her name was one worth remembering but he couldn't bring himself to bring up the correct set of syllables.

My run was basically over. Maybe helping a teacher gets us points? I still don't understand that system either. Ah well either way maybe I'll make a good impression on a professor and this girl in my house.

You overestimate me if you think I have any idea what I am going!

"Greg!"

A girl's voice echoed. It startled the professor and he fumbled and nearly dropped his burlap sack.

"Professor."

"Young lass," he replied as he recovered his bag to face the first year Ravenclaw.

"I hope you don't mind but I heard you shouting. I'd like to help."

"I'm not Greg, I'm Ben,"

A second Ravenclaw announced running up behind the blonde. They made a cute couple but weren't they a bit young to be running off together in the evening for their dalliance. Kids sure do seem to mature faster these days. Unfortunately Ben was not Greg because then this search would be over.

"What's going on?"

With the extra eyes and the extra hands perhaps Greg could be found before it was too late. "Greg has gone missing," Professor Lear repeated. "And I need to find him soon. Greg is terrified of the dark," the Professor admitted, his brow furrowed with worry. "I could most certainly use your help in finding Greg." He grunted a bit as he leaned down to brush through a particularly high tuff of grass he thought might have shifted. "He is a wily one," he warned as he went silent, his eyes fixed on a log about as thick as his thigh that might be hollow. "Greg likes tiny dark spaces," Solomon whispered as he stalked the unmoving log. Yes, the irony was obvious and he realized it after he said it but he did not have time to explain. "Ah Ha!" He cried as he lifted the log up on its side.

One, the log was not hollow.

Two, the log was heavier than he had anticipated.

Three, Greg was not there.

"Oh Ha... Owww..." Solomon's hand reached for his back. He acted as if pain had shot down his left butt-cheek  and down his left leg, as if he was bit in the @$$, back and leg by a Runespoor. "My back!" He cried. He was temporarily crippled, a victim of far too many pastries in the morning and a deceptively heavy log. "Owww..." He complained dramatically as he took a pair of hobbling steps forward. "I really could use your help in finding him," he exhaled. "Greg loves 'lil children," he explained "but he is a wee bit shy." He would ease himself onto the ground, bracing himself with an outstretched arm. The grass would bow and bend beneath him and as he did so a *SQUEEK!* could be heard and then something moved quickly through the tall grass away from the trio.

"GREG!"

Dymphna hadn't even noticed the Ravenclaw boy following her until he spoke. "Oh hey, Ben." She remembered meeting him in the common room one morning before classes. "Um," she began but honestly she didn't know the entire situation either, only that there was a Greg who was missing. What if it was a fellow student who had fallen into the lake or wandered into the Forbidden Forest?

Thankfully, the Professor spoke, saving them both from thinking too hard about it. Tiny dark spaces? Greg wasn't a student, was he? No, he definitely wouldn't be looking under a log if it were a student. Turning to Ben, she gave him a confused look before replying, "It's nice to see you again too. Unfortunate circumstances it seems." There was a squeak and the professor took off again, Dymphna following behind him trying not too worry too much about what he meant by Greg liking children. What if Greg was a rat? Could she handle that?

The blonde had took one look at them in the shop and practically ran the opposite way. She didn't even like handling them when feeding them to the family owl. "Professor," she began, a tremor in her voice that she tried to control but wouldn't. "Greg wouldn't happen to be a rat or mouse, would he?" Merlin, please no. All logical thoughts flew out the window as she worried over what exactly this Greg was.

Slowly but surely Ben was starting to realize that Ben was not a human. At least not currently a human? Not knowing worried the boy more than anything else. His magic experience was still fairly weak, especially so in the department of creatures. Dymphna seemed as lost as he was which he decided would be a good sign.

She seems to think mouse or rat. That would be normal right?

"Yeah..," Ben said slowly, trying to not be offensive. "What is Greg? That might help us help you."

He had no intent or tone to lecture the professor, but he just wanted information. Mice or rats wouldn't scare Ben much at all. Those were muggle creatures that he saw all the time as a kid. What worried, or would worry, the muggle-born first year was some strange magical being. More than that, he was worried it was a bad student the teacher turned into a literal teacher's pet. That would be a truly horrific way to spend one's lifetime.

I don't want to be turned into a mouse... I need to learn a spell to prevent that.

His attention focused back to Dympha who spoke a bit to him as they arrived. She did not seem to be out running like he was. Were those flowers? Either for class or for herself... still odd. Ben was still learning what normal meant in the Wizarding world.

"Does that worry you? You get it if it's not, I handle it if it is a rat or mouse. Deal?"

Sorry for the delay. Work and staff stuff. Humbug.

Solomon would plop down onto the ground as Greg ran off. As luck would have it Greg was not far at all! The grass was displaced as the wee creature dashed through the verdant blades towards the students. Solomon lost sight of Greg almost immediately.

"No, of course not. Affectionate creatures surely but not nearly as reckless and hard-headed as Greg," the Professor assured the Ravenclaw. "And don't let him hear you, he would be pretty sensitive about being called a rat." He warned.

Squeak! Squeak!

Something would run in front of Dymphna, she would see a flash of PINK as it scurried on past. It was running towards Ben and it was moving FAST. "BE CAREFUL!" Solomon shouted as he pointed at the grass, still resting on his laurels from an alleged back injury. "Greg! Don't step on Greg!" That was his primary concern, a crushed critter.

Either Solomon blatantly disregarded the potential danger these two students were in or they were hunting a true X-class (Boring) creature. If Ben looked down or leaned forward he would be in for a surprise. A long dark tendril-like appendage would burst from the grass and attempt to worm its way into Ben's nose.

Solomon had not answered Ben's question had he?

"Watch out, Greg eats boogers!"

Indeed, it was a favored snack of these little creatures. Ben was not using them or planning on having them as a snack for himself was he? Hopefully not!

Her fellow Ravenclaw was striking up a deal. He would catch it if it were a rat but that left her with some other unknown create if it wasn't. "Deal," she heard herself say quickly before she could second guess it. It wasn't like it would be a baby dragon, right? Anything other than a rat, she might could handle without feeling squirmy. Just grab it and give it back to the professor.

There was a flash of pink and the blonde could see it running towards the Prefect and herself, except it was all a blur so she still couldn't tell what it was. Thankfully not a rat but still, what on Earth was it?! All she wanted to do was run but worried that she would step on it, she stood her ground. "Watch out, Greg eats boogers!" You've got to be joking, Dymphna thought, wondering if Professor Lear really was mad but she dropped her book and covered her nose all the same, both hands just to be safe.

Which left her completely unable to catch the critter. She shot Ben a look as if to say are you going to get that? The deal was forgotten. Nothing would be roaming around in her nose if she could help it. She tried to tell Ben so but it came out sounding nasally. "Get it, get it!"

Greg eats what?

That's all Ben could even think before he was attacked by something disgusting. He had already been leaning forward looking through the grass for the creature. By the time the Professor shouted out a warning it was too late. The tendril came from nowhere and knew just what it wanted. It wanted boogers.

"AAAAHH!" Ben yelled, yanking his head back and stumbling backwards.

A slimy, nostril-sized tendril dipped right into his nasal passage looking for treasure. Ben's initial reaction slowed it down but it held on tight, bringing Greg himself out of the grass, dangling in the air as Ben panicked. He could feel his mucus being dug out and sucked away like a dentist cleaning his mouth. It was the worst feeling he ever experienced but it was also somehow relieving once it was over.

"Get off!" he yelled as he yanked the tendril out, dropping Greg, whatever he was. "Ah my nose! Professor!"

A small drip of blood could be seen exiting his right nostril due to pulling the hooked in creature away. It wasn't serious but it certainly was clearly a nose bleed. He glanced to Dymphna, his eyes wide with concern. Soon, he did the same thing, covering his nose to prevent another attack. His nasally reply still sounded a bit sarcastic.

"Thanks, D..." he somewhat forget how to say her name but knew it started with a D so he pretended to be making fun of her.
