Afternoon
Warm, Breezy
The only thing Marla took away from her day with Scott months ago was that he had big hands and was still a freak, but at least he liked quidditch. Didn't make him annoy her any less, but still, at least the dude had substance to himself now besides being an overly clean, cat-loving, dumb blonde. Well, it also made it way, way more annoying that besides resenting him, she envied him. The family, the status, the money. It drove her nearly to the point of madness. Then again, she wouldn't let Scott win. When people asked why Marla went insane (and it will most likely happen eventually) she doesn't want Scott to be the reason. So, for now, she'll have to keep her wits instead of trying to strangle him.

Actually, there was a small chance she would do so, as she was on her way towards him. Something Marla never thought she'd be doing. But he had given her his obnoxiously large gloves, and if she wasn't planning on burning them or making some small child a blanket– what else did she have to do with them? It was just a constant reminder that she was small and he wasn't. And that she had to socialize with him for over five minutes. Gross.

She looked down at her now very muddy shoes as she trudged through the tree-filled grounds. Although she'd never been in them, it occurred to her that this reminded her of the forbidden forest. If she wasn't so concerned with getting expelled, Marla would've been in the creature filled place in no time. After all, she was no stranger whatsoever to breaking rules. In fact, by this point in time, Marla and rule-breaking were pretty good friends. But to get expelled from Hogwarts would be by her standards, a death sentence. She'd have absolutely nowhere to go. Well, that was a lie. She could stay at her uncle's house or her dad's, but to go back to muggle school or just learn basic maths again in general? It wouldn't live up to something like defense against the dark arts or charms.

Marla grumbled to herself as she trudged through the forest. It was nice at first, but for someone that hates exercise, this was torture. Couldn't Scott have, like, picked the library or something? Somewhere rational? Somewhere that you could easily find someone? She asked Alan where Scott was, though saying that he was on the grounds was a pretty broad statement. The place was ginormous and by this point, she could see the roof of the Keeper of Key's cabin in the distance.

All of a sudden, a sort of rustling noise made its way through the forest. Marla looked to her left and saw a strangely messy head of blonde hair that belonged to a very tall, and also very bothersome boy. Speak of the devil.

Making her way towards him, he violently threw a rock at a tree and missed. She snorted at his attempt and fished in her pockets for the gloves. It would be wise to get out of here as soon as possible before he caught her in his net of talking until her goddamn ear fell off.

"Y'know, for a tall person, you have a really bad aim. I don't think you'd ever make it to the NBA," She said, her voice filled with mocked sadness. "You don't seem like the violent type, though. What'd that tree do to you? Huh?" Marla teased, picking up the rock and throwing it herself. She blushed as it missed, though at least it hit a small branch. "Okay, at least I can use being short as an excuse."

Marla tapped Scott on the shoulder, putting the gloves in his hands. "Here." She said, and almost left right then, but it seemed that Scott had been abusing the plant life here for quite a while now. Of course, she and the fellow Gryffindor weren't buddy buddy, but considering how Scott was 99.99% of the time, this wasn't like him whatsoever. There was a pile of scattered rocks behind the tree he had been attempting to hit before. She furrowed her brows and looked at him. Was he... Mad? If he was, someone had to have fucked up. Marla was throwing snide comments at him left and right on the quidditch pitch and he didn't have a clue. So to get him genuinely angry... That was a feat. Marla would say that she could relate, but she was always mad at something. Though this time it was more serious with it completely turning around everything she had once knew, it was still the same emotion she'd felt for years. Just a little stronger.

"So, what's the deal with you? Someone take your... Hat?" She asked half-heartedly, mostly interested in who could even upset blonde Mr. Bean. "I don't think I've ever seen you in my two years here ever actually like, upset. So if you are and I'm not crazy, it has to be pretty rough." She grabbed another rock and looked at him. "You kinda have to go to the right of where you're aiming to hit it, at least in my experience as a chaser." She said, throwing it and hitting the rock into the tree. "Try it," she put a rock in his hand. Maybe he wasn't a complete shallow smiley bimbo after all.

"Wh-where are you g-going?"
"Nowhere, Alan."
"N-nowhere?"
"Out! Ok? To the grounds."
"Oh. A-alright. When will you be b-back?"
"How should I know."
"Right... B-be careful."

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

He wouldn't have recognised himself. Not in the mirror, not by the voice with which he spoke to Alan before he left their dormitory, and not by the feeling in his chest. Nothing about Scott, felt like Scott today. And for someone who'd always been at least a bit happy with themselves, this was very unfortunate.

Instead, he felt like someone else. Someone both older and younger than him. Somebody who knew annoyingly little, and yet uncomfortably much... Twitchy, erratic and infinitely done with this school year.

He felt fourteen.

And in this confusion, Scott had left the castle behind him. He'd been quick about his steps, and with flailing arms he'd entered the small, bright wood closer to the lake than the grounds' cabin... Twigs and branches would break under his heavy steps, and ones still alive would graze his face as he rushed past them through thickets.

Scott had been on many walks through the grounds during his time at school. He knew perfectly well this wasn't the best way to get anywhere.

As he got to a particular spinney, a piece of more open ground where a tree had fallen and kept any large vegetation from growing since some time ago, Scott stopped. Only now, faced as he was by the quiet of the grove and the mocking beauty of the nature around him, did the boy realise he had absolutely no idea what he was doing. He'd been rude, that was true, but also truthful when he'd spoken to Alan: he was going nowhere. And he'd gone nowhere with his mind so full of raging memories that he could barely contain himself anymore.

I thought Gryffindors were supposed to be brave...

Releasing the breath he'd been holding with a dissatisfied grunt Scott reached towards the ground, grabbing whatever lay closest and heaving it into the air before him without aiming at anything in particular. And the rock flew. And it felt good... He could see it. He could point to where it landed. He knew where it came from.

It's for your own good.

He grabbed another. He was standing on top of a lot of small stones, it seemed, and as the last one had hit a tree right on Scott aimed to hit it once more. It had made a noise. One of the absolute worst things about his anger right now was that it didn't make any noise. All good things make noises.

Go write to your mummy about it, why won't you? Stop bothering everyone.

And another. Feeling his breath force its way up and down his throat quicker and quicker and beyond his own control, Scott jerked his arm forwards and let the rock fly out of his hand as far as it could. With every throw, it was as if his hand was convincing him he'd be tossing something else away, too- something far more nasty. But it remained.

"Y'know, for a tall person, you have a really bad aim. I don't think you'd ever make it to the NBA."
The boy didn't turn around, nor did he jump at the sound of the girl's voice from behind him. Instead, he simply froze where he stood, about to reach down for another rock but stopping himself before his knees bent.

He couldn't see the girl, partly because she was behind him and partly because his eyes had shut in exhasepration, but by the sound of it she was making her way closer to him over the twigs on the ground- emerging from between the thicker line of trees and entering the grove. Scott did not want her here. And the familiarity of the Scottish accent didn't particularly help...

This wasn't the first time she'd teased him, was it?
"You don't seem like the violent type, though. What'd that tree do to you? Huh?"
At these words, Scott caught a glimpse of a small, round stone flying passed his head landing over his pile after hitting a branch of the tree before him.
"Okay, at least I can use being short as an excuse. Here,"
A determined tap on his shoulder made the dishevelled boy spin around on the spot and face Marla furiously.

Scott had only caught a glimpse of himself in the mirror after their last lesson of the day, before he'd left Alan in that rude fashion in the dormitory. He knew how he looked. He knew that his cheeks were flushed, that his shirt was wrinkly from the way he'd thrown his robes off him in the previous heat, and that his hair stood on end.

Well, it stood on end by Scott's usual standards. A strand was loose.

The short brunette before him was holding her hand out, and in it lay a pair of gloves. They were his own gloves, his old black dragon skin ones, but staring at them now it must've been obvious to her that Scott was too dazed to recognise them...
"So, what's the deal with you? Someone take your... Hat?"
Still staring into her hand, Scott said nothing yet. He was breathing heavily, but if he wasn't then he'd have locked his mouth shut.

He'd been rude enough to Alan. And it had scared him.
"I don't think I've ever seen you in my two years here ever actually like, upset. So if you are and I'm not crazy, it has to be pretty rough."
Not listening. Staying quiet. But is was difficult, wasn't it? Because the mean little Scotswoman was onto something. The something that was making this all so much more difficult for him: the newness of these feelings... The fact that he knew nothing about them, the fact that he had no idea what to do with them, and the fact that this wasn't the person people knew him to be.
"You kinda have to go to the right of where you're aiming to hit it, at least in my experience as a chaser. Try it."
But right then, as if the girl taking a small step next to him to demonstrate her own throw had flipped a switch within the poor boy's head, he grabbed his gloves from her free hand and yelled:

"Don't! Alright? Don't! Don't tell me how to do things, don't try and teach me how to do things, and for the love of God don't do it with that accent."

He'd had enough of it, and from enough people.

Ami was telling him he was a coward, that he was naive, and that he wasn't handling his own brother right. Meanwhile his brother was telling him he was spoiled, that he was worthless, and that he couldn't even handle himself right if he tried.

So Scott didn't feel like trying anymore. He'd come this far, hadn't he? He'd managed to make friends, just the way he was. He'd managed to get O's, just the way he was.

The rocks may not be hitting the tree, but they were flying.

"Because I don't need you to, alright? I don't need anyone to! You could've been the chaser for the goddamn Ballycastle Bats, for all I care- throw your own rocks."

The biggest thing you can say is 'elephant'

[quote]To be frank, Marla was enjoying this greatly. Seeing Scott Alexander destroy himself from the inside out. She wasn't completely sure what was wrong, but it was relieving as all hell to witness the seemingly perfect student transform into a ticking time bomb on the verge of destroying the entire UK. She smirked, shoving one hand in her pocket and using the other to dangle the gloves in front of Mr. Grumpypants, her dark eyes gleaming in an ever so slightly sinister way. It kind of made her feel like a sociopath or some overly evil villain, with indulging herself in someone else's misery. Not to mention enjoying it so much. And she was taking advantage of every second of it, watching his shoulders tense up after ever last word she said, the taunting undertones in her Scot accent. It seemed like he was about to snap. He'd most likely just kick a branch or if he's feeling really daring, maybe he'll use his handkerchief as a weapon! How scary.

But she was wrong.

The blonde bimbo yanked the gloves out of the much smaller girl's hand. Her eyes widened, it was almost as if the clueless and bubbly dude that she saw in the brutal winter on the quidditch benches never even existed. His green eyes not displaying one sign of joy. Just fury. Almost exactly like Marla herself. Goosebumps went down her entire body, feeling like she was looking into a mirror. A really rich... overpriced.... blonde..... annoying...... Mirror. But a mirror, nonetheless. He took a deep breath, opening his mouth to speak. She braced herself for something like 'Ello lauv, please exit the premises or ahm going to get my mummy to buy the woods and your entire family and kick you out, yeah?' But once again, Marla Quinlan was dead wrong.

"Don't! Alright? Don't! Don't tell me how to do things, don't try and teach me how to do things, and for the love of God don't do it with that accent."

Holy. Shit.

That was unexpected. Marla stood there in silence, looking up at the boy who she now noticed was... Way, way taller than her, as he glared her down, making her feel smaller than she had felt in months. She crossed her arms, speechless, feeling something she hadn't felt in forever.

Fear.

It was relieving, honestly. The girl hadn't felt anything that strongly in ages. Nothing took her by surprise anymore, nothing made her laugh, nothing, nothing, nothing. But as quick as that feeling came, it disappeared. Emotions were fickle, and it was so frustrating. However, before she could wallow about how she wasn't feeling the adrenaline rush of Scott's yelling anymore, that fear morphed into sympathy. Why? Why did she feel bad for someone she loathed five minutes ago? She'd been conflicted about her feelings for a while now, but this takes the cake.

"Because I don't need you to, alright? I don't need anyone to! You could've been the chaser for the goddamn Ballycastle Bats, for all I care- throw your own rocks."

She leaned on a tree, boring at him in shock for a few seconds too long before responding. After all, what was there to say? He was right. She was a bitch to him. And she kept on being a bitch when she could tell something was off. What did Marla expect would happen? She would get a metal, or something? Normally, she'd probably tease him and walk away, or yell at him. But something told her to stay. Maybe she was mental– but hey, can't deny instincts. That's basically the foundation of being a Gryffindor.

To hell with it.

"I don't think I'm the one you're angry at, yeah?" She mustered out, kicking some loose dirt in his direction with her beat-up mary janes. Being the way she was, Marla had tons of experience with being pissed at anyone and everyone. And sometimes inanimate objects. So, if anyone was to console Scott Alexander on how to be a whiny, emo teenager that hates the world and more, it was Marla. She had nothing else to do, so why not? It'd be kind of fun to watch him do things out of character for him, anyways. "Someone must've really screwed up then. Sucks." She attempted to keep her words vague, in fear of hitting a chord and making him even more riled up.

"And for your information, the Ballycastle Bats are extremely overrated, hate those lads." In an attempt to clear the air of the crushing weight of the awkward silence, she spurted out a small joke, putting a hopeful smirk on her face to see if he would match the energy. The shade from the trees made it hard to tell, even with the prep boy's blinding blonde highlights.

Marla laid down on the grass, after all, legs so little could only hold up her weight for so long. She turned her head to the side, looking at the still upright boy next to her. "Have you ever tried screaming at nothing? It works. We're in the middle of nowhere so it isn't like people will think there's a magic ax murderer or anything. I hope. It feels weird at first but I always feel better after doing it. Give it a shot if you want." Grabbing a twig, she began peeling off the layers of wood from the top, moving her fingertips along the now smooth surface of beige timber, throwing the scraps behind her, some pieces getting caught in her hair. She waited patiently for the boy's answer. Even if it was a simple leave me alone, or if he walked away, that wouldn't really bother her much. She approached the issue, it wasn't like he came to her begging for an angry hormonal Scottish therapist or anything. As far as she knew.
