Early Birds never fly alone
OC: Open for interaction with anyone :-) Ileen is a bit silent and chooses the early morning to be alone - but a part of her also hopes for someone else beeing around - like finding a related soul
Ileen hugged her knees into her chest and watched the sun rising. The reflection made the water of the lake sparkle and it looked like it turned into liquid gold.
It was still early - Ileen had already had breakfast, but since it was Saturday, Hogwarts only slowly began to awake. She had met only a few other people, even in the Great Hall.
That was one of the reasons why she loved this time of the day and which had made her an early bird.
Looking at the picturesque countryside of hogwarts, shrouded in morning mist, and watching the grounds turn from quiet peace into activity, reminded her of home.
With a sigh she leaned against the tree in front of which she had made herself comfortable.
She had chosen a place on the lakeside, which was closest to the palace portal but had turned her back to the Castle.
Even it was still a bit chill she knew the summer sun would turn this relaxing spot in a place too hot to relax. Actually, she was grateful for the thick walls of Hogwarts which kept the heat outside.
Thoughtfully she bedded her chin on her knees. She wondered if her parents had liked going to the lake or if they had had a favourite place at all. She smiled ironically, almost a little bitter. Like they had ever told me more than I needed to about my time here. I don’t even know their favorite classes. Or any school unrelated activities they did.
Tired of her frustration she decided that she could no longer just sit around. Following a spontaneous inspiration, she took off her shoes and balanced barefoot down to the lakeside. The cool smooth stones felt pleasant under her bare feet and a little smile stole onto her lips. She grabbed her robe and carefully held a toe into the cold water. A goose skin crawled up her leg and she had to grin. She was okay with cold. It didn’t bother her so much.
When suddenly a small wave sloshed over her entire leg, she squealed in surprise and jumped backwards. That wasn’t so smart after all, because doing that she got tangled up in her rope and fell backwards.
Embarrassed, she sat up. Thanks to Melin nobody had seen it. It must have looked ridiculous - at least that’s what she thought, still sitting on the ground with her hair messed up.

Early Birds never fly alone
Eira was known to engage in rather ludicrous activities, but none of her limited exploits at Hogwarts had quite yet reached the illogicality of her current focus: racing against an owl. The bird seemed a bit bemused— if birds can even seem bemused— but continued its route determinedly, a letter clamped securely in its beak. The rising sun reflected off of the parchment's crimson seal, creating a vivid glare that caused Eira to shade her eyes with her hand. In the split second she moved her gaze from the owl, it was swallowed by the early morning mist.
Cursing her momentary distraction, she came to a stop. Her breath came raggedly, and a proud grin split her face. She hadn't been able to run this distance with no break only a few weeks prior.
The sky was just beginning to brighten, alluding to what was sure to be the start of summer heat. Now, though, it was pleasantly brisk. Eira hadn't expected the morning to be this cold, instead dragging herself out of bed early to avoid a scolding for what a professor would probably call "irresponsible activity." Though it wasn't like she was hurting anyone. Just having some fun before classes started again on Monday. With a sigh, she walked towards the lake for a moment of peace.
Instead, she found a girl that looked to be in her year surveying the water with a pensive expression. Eira was about to leave the other to her calmness when the girl fell back with a squeak, reacting to a small wave that sent her onto her back. Stifling a laugh, Eira started jogging towards the poor girl. "Hey! Are you alright?"

Ileen instantly flushed in embarrassment. Sometimes destiny really didn't mean well for her. Normally she meets noone and then, when something embarrassing happened - of course someone was watching.
Quickly she made her way back to standing, unbuttoned her rope and looked defiantly at the girl who had come running towards her. Ileen searched for mockery in the girls eyes. Was she making fun of her? But she asked if she was okay. So probably she just wanted to be nice. She pulled herself together and sighed.
“I’m fine - thanks. Nothing broken. Except for my dignity, my pride and my chance to make a good first impression” She smiled dryly. “As you can see I’m an expert in making these remarkable first impressions.” Her voice dripping with self-mockery.
“By the way, what are you doing out here at this time of the day?" She looked at the girl more closely. Her short blond hair was a little stuffy and her cheeks were flushed as if she'd been running not long ago. She looked like she was about her age even though she was a good deal smaller than Ileen herself. She only noticed this at second glance, as the girl was wearing shoes with a very high sole.
“I’m Ileen by the way. First year Slytherin. And who are you?” She didn’t even know why she introduced herself in this formal way - maybe because she was still trying to get her self-esteem back together. Also, she was a bit nervouse. It was the first time ever that she met another person on a saturday morning at this time outside of the castle. Did the girl had some kind of morning routine like jogging?
Ileen frowned and scratched her nose.
“The water attacked me first, you know? It wasn’t my fault”, she joked, looked down at her naked feet and gazed sadly at her wet rope.

Eira smiled, sympathetically amused at the girl's reaction. Given her own misadventures, Eira had plenty of experience with embarrassment. "I get it. You looked pretty lost in thought, so that must have been startling," she said, extending a hand. "I'm Eira, by the way. First year Hufflepuff, if you want to be specific. And you don't have to worry about making a good first impression around me," she said with a laugh. "I'm known to do fairly absurd things myself— at least your predicament was accidental."
She cocked her head to the side, considering whether to invite Ileen to continue her jog with her, given that the sun had yet to rise fully. But after a moment of quick contemplation, Eira concluded that the other girl probably wouldn't enjoy going with her. The closed off demeanor and mild defensiveness the slytherin had shown were most likely a result of her embarrassment, as Ileen seemed nice other than that, but she didn't quite seem like the athletic type.
Instead, Eira took another look at the other girl's dripping form and gestured back to the castle. "If you want, I can walk you back so you can dry off— or leave you alone, which is totally fine if you prefer that!"

Ileen grinned. It was nice to meet someone who also seemed to get into strange situations. Or at least told her so. She took a closer look at Eira again. Apart from her reddened cheeks, she revealed nothing about her to indicate that she had done anything crazy
“Fairly absurd things?”, she therefore asked curiously. “I hope, being up and outside at this time of the day doesn’t count. Otherwise I’m totally crazy.”
She waited anxiously for an answer. Even though she usually stayed out of unusual things, exciting stories seemed perfect to distract her from her frustrating thoughts about her parents. But in return, after her initial embarrassment, she was even happy to have the company.
“Did you do some sports? Or did you run away from something and” She glanced over eiras shoulder with a half smile. “should I be worried? Are you in trouble?”
Ileen was not a runner. She was more of a persistent walker, but what she liked most was climbing. In New Zealand she often had climbed on the trees or, to her parents' annoyance, on the roof of the house to have a closer look at the incredible expanses.
Following an intuition she raised an eyebrow. “Are you applying for the obstacle race initiated by Professor Kibitzer?”
Dee had told her about it. Together they had decided that only crazy people would make fools of themselves in front of the whole school.
Ileen shrugged her shoulders. “Sure. Unless you have something better to do.” She grinned. “And if you're really in trouble, let me know. I'm happy to be your alibi. Unless it's dangerous, then maybe I should run, too.”
It was actually kind of nice to have some company. Eira seemed like a nice person. Anyway she hadn't laughed at Ileen and now she offered to help. I'm sure the form would soon dry in the sun.

Eira laughed. "No, I'm not in trouble— this time, at least. And as for the obstacle course, I had been considering it, though I have yet to find anyone willing. I might just skip it and keep exploring campus by myself." She took another look at the sky, now reaching a blue tint much more reminiscent of daytime. "If you'd like, we can just stay out here, given that it should be much warmer soon. I'm happy to converse with you... and though I don't mean to pry, you seemed a bit sad before I showed up. I know I just met you and all, and I don't profess to be a counselor by any means, but you can talk about it, I guess?"
Now it was Eira's turn to be embarrassed, and she cleared her throat, suddenly aware of how awkward she had made things. "Sorry, I, um... never mind. I should probably answer all of your questions. I was out here just for a jog, y'know, to get my endurance up and all. And trying to run at the speed of a flying owl, which, let me tell you, is pretty hard." She smiled again, hoping her pseudo-joke had made up for her earlier inopportune question.

Ileen sighed with exaggerated regret nut with a twinkle in the eye to show that she meant no harm. “I guess with this trouble I can’t help you since there is no way I will participate. Sorry.” She thought back briefly to the embarrassing scene by the water where Eira had surprised her. That must have seemed pretty clumsy. “But after the first impression I made, you probably won’t even want me to join.” She grinned. “And sure. Let’s stay outside. I like that better anyways.”
When Eira asked about her mood, Ilee waved it off. “Don’t worry about it. I just wondered what could have been the favorite spot of my parents, when they were students at Hogwarts.” She shrugged her shoulders. “And then I realized how little I actually know about them.” She smiled apologetically and sighed. “Sorry. Not that interesting. What about your parents? Did they go to Hogwarts, too?”
When the girl told Ileen about her race against the owl, she was impressed and amused at the same time. “Owls are not the fastest birds, but still… Not bad! And also a funny idea! How did you come up with that?”
In fact, Ileen was quite interested in animals, so she couldn't help but spill special knowledge. “Better an owl than the New Zealand Falcon. They make it up to 230 km/h. I bet that would be even hard with a broom!”
Ileen still had the urge to do something which was untypical for her. But probably it was just an untypical day in general. So, she pointed at the stones near the water. “Do you know how to skip stones across water?”

Impressed at Ileen's trivia knowledge, Eira nodded. "The New Zealand falcon sounds really cool! You must be pretty smart since you know that, huh?" Directing her vision to the lake again, she noticed some rather flat, smooth stones lying at the edge of the water. Brushing away a bit of the plants growing at the banks of the lake, she picked up a rock, turning it around to make sure there was no poor snail attached to it that would go hurtling through the air when she threw the stone. "I've never really tried to skip stones before, but I suppose it's worth a try. I've always wanted to— they look really cool, hopping across the surface of the water like that."
Eira held the rock in one hand, then threw it sideways like a frisbee. It spun a few times through the air before making an impact on the surface of the lake, bouncing once and then sinking, sending ripples concentrically around it. She laughed, watching the stone sink beyond the light and into the shadowy depths below. Turning to Ileen, she picked up another rock and tossed it between her hands. "Oh well. That was an okay first try, I guess. Do you have any tips?"

Ileen smiled flattered. „That’s pretty nice of you to say. Not smart enough for Ravenclaw obviously though.” She shook her head. “No, I’m not that smart. I just lived in New Zealand the first nine years of my life. That’s why I know such things. And I like animals. They are not interested in who you are and if you have money or not. They just care about your actions.” She grinned. “I bet, there are a million things you know, and I don’t.”
She looked at the blonde girl thoughtfully. For some reason it was not difficult for Ileen to tell things about herself with Eira around. I like her. She has a pleasant lightness in her behaviour.
“Where are you from? What is your history?” Maybe that went a little too far. So she hastily added: “You don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to. I was just curious.”
Grinning she watched Eiras attempt to skip the stone. When it sank after one skip, she smiled. “Ah, I see! We have something in common. I never made it further!” She laughed. “I hoped you could give me some tips! I'm really bad at this. But I always wanted to learn.”
Thoughtfully, she stretched her nose. “You are pretty nice and kind. Is everyone in Hufflepuff like that?”

Eira smiled. "Yeah, Hufflepuffs are usually pretty nice. You're really pleasant too, though. Slytherins usually get a bad reputation, and even though I don't know many, you seem cool!"
Looking back out onto the lake, she picked up another rock, dipping it in the water to brush off some of the debris that had collected on it. "I'm fairly sure the rock skipping is a lost cause at this point," she said with a grin. "You said you wanted to know my history, right? I'm from Fishguard— it's a port town in Wales." A small wave lapped gently at her feet, and she scrambled back with a surprised laugh. "I like spending time here, at the lake, since it reminds me of home. Less seagulls here, of course, but the water is so beautiful in the morning, all silver and stuff."
It was less metallic now, instead flowing in a liquid ombre of orange and teal. A rather nice place to talk, Eira supposed.
"Although I should probably spend more time studying... this is so much nicer than the crowded library, though." She shook her head, looking down at the rock and skipping it across the lake, with about the same amount of success as last time. "What about you? Where are you from, if you don't mind my asking?"
