James had his headphones on... and that was dangerous.

James stepped out of the castle doors and closed them behind him. He looked up at the sky and took a long, deep breath. That epic fantasy music was playing in his ears and penetrating his heart all the way through. All of his life, he had longed for something, anything to happen. Something wondrous, something magical, something lovely, something adventurous, something dangerous, something fantastical, something not normal.
He was in no means normal, even when he was without magic, raised in the Muggle world. He was young and high-spirited. His soul craved for excitement, for thrill, for anything, really. In a world without magic, he played his violin, his piano. He sang, he danced. He did magic tricks, he role played magical things. He wrote stories, he drew drawings. He made and did beautiful things, and it almost made up for the absence of real fantasy in his life.
But then, he found Hogwarts.
And now, he was determined to find adventure. James took his foot off of the stone wall behind him and started running.
He closed his eyes, feeling the powerful wind whip past him and the music course through his veins. He felt like he could run forever. He ran down a grassy hill, purposefully rolling down the last part and somersaulting up again at the bottom. He continued to run, along the shore of the lake, splashing in the shallow water. He came to a lone tree. A large willow tree swaying in the wind. James ran right up its tree trunk, climbing for no reason. He reached out to grab a branch, but suddenly, it jerked away and something walloped him off of the tree.
James' headphones went flying off of his head and as he flew through the air away from the tree, he saw that it was in fact the tree that was moving and had whacked him away. James hadn't been too far up, thankfully, but it still hurt and knocked the wind out of him when he landed on his back several yards away from the tree. Coughing, James slowly sat up and tried to get his breath back.
Finally when he could breath again, James uttered out, "Wow..."
James turned around to look for his headphones, mumbling something like "I'm not doing that again..." when he saw someone standing close by.

And that person standing by was.. Marissa! She giggled slightly, seeing the boy mess around the area. She found it weird but exciting at the same time that the boy thought he was in his own musical of some sort. She then realised he was looking straight at her. Her face instantly went bright red and she tried to behind another tree.

Hoping that James did not see her, Mari slid down on the tree and sat, leaning back onto it. She ruffled through her bag and grabbed out a book on Magical Creatures. She was always fascinated by these creatures, so many to learn about and to explore. Maybe still some left to discover. She giggled at the thought of the boy before going back to her book. Mari wondered if the boy would come around, she could not speak so what would she do? This got her worked up slightly but she shook it off, reading her book. She imagined herself riding a thestral, even though it basically impossible to do so. For some reason she always came up with the most silliest and weirdest daydreams, even it surprised her how she could have possibly come up with those ideas. She shrugged to herself as she wondered who that boy was..

James looked up into the eyes of whoever was standing in front of him. It was a young girl, about his age too, by the looks of it. She was Hufflepuff and her eyes were blue like James'. She had light skin, but that changed as she suddenly burnt a bright red. And before James could do or say anything, she ran away.
Before doing so, the girl had giggled at James. James didn't think it was mocking or mean in any way, but rather a friendly giggle, if that made sense, considering the fact that James didn't even know this person.
But as she ran away blushing, James was instantly hooked on wondering who she was. That might have seemed weird to James earlier, but when James ad looked up to see who was there, he had expected something entirely different from what had just happened. He didn't know what he expected, just not that.
James stood up, puzzling and running one hand through his hair thoughtfully. The girl took her place behind another tree a short ways away. She disappeared from sight, and James gazed at the spot she had just been for a moment or two before deciding to follow.
James came around the tree in a wide circle, so as to not scare her or anything.
Um, hello." James said softly as he came around to greet her. She was on the ground, reading a book as if nothing had just happened.
This is a strange girl... James thought. And that right there was why he suddenly wanted to be friends with her.

The boy with blue eyes seemed ok, probably an extrovert. Completely opposite from Mari but maybe she could do with different. Her sister would probably like it if she made friends on her own, not having to depend on each other so much. Mari always leaned on Clarysaa for support, she always knew what to do in most situations. Even though they were not that close, Marissa would sometimes have to depend on her for help.

She thought about the Magical Creatures in her book, smiling to herself at times. She was thinking about each one of them and what it would be like to take care of each of these creatures. Basilisks, Unicorns, Dragons and many more. They all seemed extreme but Marissa was absolutely fascinated with each one of them. Most people would probably run away from them, but Mari was eager to learn about these creatures. Maybe could discover more species once she graduated Hogwarts, that would be her ultimate goal.

Marissa instantly gasped as James came around the tree. The boy scared her out of her skin. Due to her jumping, her book jumped out of her hand and dropped in a mud pile nearby. She sighed and got up from her spot and quickly walking over to it.

Um, hello." James said softly as he came around to greet her. James came around the tree in a wide circle, so as to not scare her or anything. But, his efforts seemed in vain.
The girl gasped as James spoke. She seemed to jump out of her skin. Because of her start, the book she was reading flew out of her hands and landed in a nearby mud puddle. The girl sighed and it almost made James' heart melt to hear a sigh so discontent.
"Oh, um, sorry." he apologized, "I didn't mean to scare you."
James didn't really notice that she was getting up to retrieve her book from the ground, so James bent down and picked it up for her. He brushed off the mud from the cover, now properly seeing the title.
"Magical Creatures..." he muttered to himself. He realized he had never put much thought into the magical creatures of this world, and much like when he first saw this girl, he instantly was intrigued. Maybe he shouldn't be so imaginative all the time. But James would never seriously think of that on his own.
James looked up at the girl and held the book out to her. He now realized that she had gotten up to get the book herself, and now they were standing face-to-face. James blushed a little as some unexplainable butterflies tickled his stomach.

How could you just be so stupid? Dropping your book like that, a one way ticket to that boy thinking you’re weird. You’re not ready to make enemies or bullies, no way. This is what Marissa thought, her anxiety continuously pinging at her like an annoying scratch that she could not reach. She sighed, knowing that this was probably true. Self torture, she was used to this but could not help herself.

As she was walking towards her book, she realised the boy was getting it for her. Before she knew it, they were standing face to face. This was extremely too close for Marissa’s liking. She took a step back, rubbing the back of her neck awkwardly. No eye contact was needed, it was obvious that Marissa was embarrassed once again. Her cheeks flared up red again, but only as if she was blushing. She took the book from James and tried to to rub the dirt off of the book.

Why is he interested in me? Nothing of me is that important, so is he helping? Anxiety again. She tried to thank James, but nothing came out. She sighed and looked up to the boy in front of her with an embarrassed expression. The same unexplainable butterflies tickled inside her stomach, a feeling she never had before. This freaked Marissa out slightly.

Awkward. That's the best way James could explain his current situation that he was in.
The girl made no eye contact with him, but just blushed like he did, but possibly worse. She took a step back, making the distance between them a bit more bearable. She took the book back from James, and brushed the rest of the dirt off of it.
James cocked his head slightly at her strange behavior. Was she scared of him? Or was she just really shy? Or both? Ugh, he thought, that would be so much worse!
The girl rubbed the back of her neck awkwardly. She looked like she wanted to and was about to say something, but no noise came out.
Eventually, James found the silence too dense, so he spoke.
"Uh... hi." he said, finding himself also rubbing the back of his neck. He noticed himself doing this, and stopped, bringing his hands back down in front of him, folding them together.
"I, uh... I'm James." he added, "What's your name?" James really hoped that she would answer. He had this strong want to be friends with this girl. He had no idea why, but he felt that he was responsible for being friendly to her. He guessed that that was just him.

Great, talking. Why does socialising have to be so difficult? This thought constantly played through her head. Being selectively mute, Marissa was not a big fan of conversations. She would have to come up with new and creative ways to try and answer his questions. This will be a challenge.

Suddenly, an idea popped into her head. She look happy for a moment when she opened her Magical Creatures book. Mari flipped to the first page where it was printed in her mother’s hand writing, saying ‘Marissa North, First Year, Hufflepuff’. Hopefully he will get the message. Please be literate, I will faint if he is not literate. She looked nervous as she held the book out to him, showing him the label. Her hands were shaking slightly. Stupid hands, why can’t you just hold still for a moment? He will think we are weird.

She felt herself blush again, not really knowing why she was, which confused her even more. He seemed ok, friendly. Marissa hoped he would not be one of those boys who would try and get close to her and then spill all of her secrets after she put her full trust in them. Even if he did get that close, that would the tricky part.

The girl seemed to be nervous about something. James guessed that he was right to think that she was just really shy and didn't like socializing. James' spirits suddenly rose as the girl moved to respond or do something other than the two of them just standing and staring at each other.
James watched as she opened up her book and flipped to a certain page. She held out the book for James to read whatever was on it. James leaned closer to read the hand-written words.
Marissa North, First Year, Hufflepuff
James read, quietly mumbling the words, letting them rest just on the edge of his lips. When he had read it, he looked back up at the girl.
"Marissa?" he asked, "I like that name! It's a nice name." he added honestly.
Seeing Marissa no longer as "the girl" but now as "Marissa" gave James somewhat of a new view on her. Names were funny things like that. You can know one thing exists, but it becomes so much more real when it has a name and you have something to call it.
James stood straight up again, not sure what else to do or say. The awkward silence had returned.
"Um, so you... do you... talk?" he asked gently.
Seeing Marissa standing there, shy and non-talkative, made James sad. He wanted to just reach over and give her a reassuring hug... but he knew that would be weird if he did that now. They didn't even really know each other.

Marissa instantly giggled and blushed. No one has ever complimented her name before. Why are you blushing? He will think you are weird. Control it. And just like that, Marissa went back into shy mode. James would probably think she was being rude, laughing weirdly like that. You probably just scared him away.

Of course James would ask if she could speak, anyone else would. She should have expected it, should have prepared. But she was stupid enough to forget and stare stupidly at the boy. She sighed and shook her head. No she could not speak. Well, if she tried really hard then maybe a possible single word. But she did not have the guts to embarrass herself once again in front of him. She pointed to her throat and shook her head again.

After trying to explain, Marissa put her Magical Creatures book back into her bag. She did not want to get that messy before she even started the lessons. When she finished putting it into the bag, she turned back to the boy. She gave James an apologetic smile, she felt sorry that she could not speak to him properly. He was probably confused and thought she was being rude towards him.
