APPEARANCE

Bastille is a study in contrasts. Dark, messy curls and dark, messy freckles set off his pale skin and make him look more boyish than his general demeanor would suggest. He is tall for his age — a trend that will follow him into adulthood — and carries himself with the steady stride of his fine breeding, but he has the tendency to slouch in his seat and throw his feet up on tables with a level of indignancy that would scandalize his mother. His features are softer, almost feminine, an indication that he takes after his mother; however, his eyes and his expression tend to negate the sweetness of his features. His eyes are baby blue, very pale and very cold, and he is often found scowling or looking on with general apathy. He does not seem very approachable in nature, and his temper and disregard for others is clearly visible in his expression when annoyed. As he grows older and "prettier," these conflicting elements of his appearance grow more pronounced. 

PERSONALITY

Bastille is not exactly the most friendly of individuals. Although he is well-mannered, with a meticulous education in niceties and etiquette, he does not care much for others and can be incredibly choosey about those he takes up as his friends. He approaches the world with a great sense of apathy, often feeling removed from the emotional reactions of others and lacking the general urge to sympathize with impersonal plights. This can make him seem cold and uncaring, and the casualness with which he will voice these feelings (or lack thereof) can make him quite unapproachable at first glance. His knack for speaking in sarcasm and telling the blunt truth does not help matters.

However, underneath his frigid exterior Bast is actually quite the empath. This is a trait he grows into (with great reluctance, as he tends to believe that emotions are tedious and detrimental), but once he does he is quite able to emotionally understand and connect with others. He has always been exceptionally good at reading people, but once he latches onto those he does like, he never lets go. He can be fiercely loyal and viciously protective of his people, and will go to any means to ensure their well-being and safety. The gray area, in his opinion, is a good place to live when it comes down to defending what is good and what is his. 

Another break in his general apathy is his temper. Bastille has always struggled with his identity, and feeling as if he is destined for Darkness, and it has made him a bit of a turbulent child. He can be quick to anger and loose with his tongue; he tends to chafe against authority and is not above speaking his mind, loudly and with sharp precision. His brash nature and tendency to act first, question later can make him quite the spit-fire, especially when it comes to perceived threats against his people.  

Despite his rebelliousness and attitude sometimes calling his standing as a student in question, Bast is actually a dedicated intellectual. He has a great interest in history and literature, both Muggle and Magical, and he puts a lot of energy into his studies and mastering his course work. When he feels overwhelmed by his extroverted peers in Gryffindor, he is often found in the library studying or exploring new texts. It would not at all be shocking to hear it said that Bast could be the perfect student, if only he could keep his mouth shut and temper in check. 

— BACKGROUND —

PRE-HOGWARTS HISTORY

Bastille Wilhelm Aurelius is the eldest child of Cecily Marseille Aurelius (née Beaumont) and Raegal Blake Aurelius. He has one younger sister, Versailles Cordelia Aurelius, who will attend Hogwarts a year after him. As the eldest on this generation, he is the heir to both the Beaumont and Aurelius families. 

Cecily Beaumont was hails from an ancient French pureblooded wizarding family and grew up in the French countryside. Although she attended Beauxbatons herself, she emigrated to England after graduation to be closer to her cousin, Margaux Florence Michel, in early 1993. There she met her future husband and recent Hogwarts alum, Raegel Aurelius. However, by the time she met him, he was already following his family's legacy into the Death Eater ranks. Their love story is a dramatic and shaky one, and by the end of the War Raegel had switched sides. His contributions to the war effort on the Light Side acted as a partial pardon, and he served a reduced sentence before joining Cecily in the Aurelius ancestral home in Tunbridge Wells, Kent. They were married in 2003, giving birth to their two children in 2008 and 2009. 

Following the death of her husband in 2010, Cecily raised Bastille and Versailles on her own in the Aurelius Estate. Bastille has no recollection of his father, and only learned the true details of Raegal's role in the War a few years before he was expected to attend Hogwarts. He was raised to be open-minded and tolerant, disregarding the generations of pureblooded discrimination his two families exhibited in the past, and to be a perfect gentleman. Cecily placed a great emphasis on etiquette and "finer" lifestyles, instructing both of her children accordingly. 

However, Bast was never quite able to perfectly mold himself into a proper heir. His loved him dearly, and was openly affectionate with he and his sister, but frustration over the mystery of his father and Cecily's refusal to tell them more at younger ages drove Bast to be a moody son. In fact, his first use of magic was at the age of five years old, in a fit of temper. He accidentally caught his mother's Daily Prophet on fire, when it seemed like she was avoiding his insistent questions about his father. He chafed against Cecily's secrets, and chafed even more against the expectations enforced on him, even if he learned his lessons well and was still able to love his mother. 

Following the revelation of Raegal's Death Eater alliance, Bastille went through a turbulent phase. He was hostile and grouchy, irritated to know that the paternal side of his family had such Dark alliances, and even more annoyed when he discovered that the Beaumont family could be just as problematic. The few years before he attended Hogwarts were marked by grim irritation and the budding assurance that he was destined to trend towards the Dark, if not because of his blood then because of his sour temperament and self-acknowledged tendency to go to extremes. 

HOUSE OF BEAUMONT
[amor vincit amnia; love conquers all]

The French House of Beaumont is an ancient pureblood wizarding family known both for their wealth and their “success in all things.” The Beaumonts have historically not claimed a single area of influence, but instead have lived by the practice of their family motto: whatever a Beaumont love, they should love it fiercely and strive to be the best at whatever they set their heart to. As a resort they have formed a dynasty of highly successful witch and wizards who excel in a plethora of fields and interests. Their love can and will conquer all, fueled by passion and assurance alone.

The House of Beaumont is also signified by their naming conventions, in which family members bare reference to famous places in either their first or middle name. The locations chosen are often of some symbolic significance to their parents or grandparents.

HOUSE OF AURELIUS
[armis exposcere pacem; they demanded peace by force of arms]

The English House of Aurelius is an old, relatively small pureblood wizarding family that has reached a point of near extinction several times over the past decades. Although they were historically known from their strength in dueling and combat, masters of the craft even, the family's reputation took a turn in recent decades by allying themselves with staunch pureblood beliefs and Dark maxims. All living Aurelius's at the time of the First Wizarding War joined with the Dark Lord, with Raegal Aurelius continuing the trend by joining the Death Eaters in the Second. However, Raegal's turncoat status seems to have shifted the family reputation once more, with the fate of the Aurelius legacy falling to his remaining two children. 

LIVING MEMBERS

Cecily Aurelius and Margaux Michael are the two remaining Beaumonts of their generation in Wizarding London. Their distant cousin, born Victoria Venice Beaumont, was disowned by her mother in the mid 1990s and moved to the Muggle world while pregnant. There she dropped her surname and gave birth to her daughter, Titanium Venice. She later married a Muggle named Dallas Mackenzie, taking his last name and giving it to her daughter as a middle name. Although Victoria has not returned to the Wizarding world, Titanium has and has been accepted back into the Beaumont family. Bastille Aurelius, Versailles Aurelius, and Titanium Venice are therefore the only Beaumonts of this generation, with Bastille the eldest and therefore the heir. 

Bastille Aurelius and Versailles Aurelius are the last two surviving Aurelius's by blood, with Bastille acting as heir.

01. Away We Go
After making a hasty get-away from his mother and sister on the platform, Bastille joins three other First Years on the Hogwarts Express: John Wolfe, Cormac McCarthy, and Angela Nelson. They are soon introduced to Lauren Wheeler, marking his first acquaintances at Hogwarts. 
02. Sorting Ceremony ★
Bastille is Sorted into Gryffindor... much to his surprise and dismay. He was certain he would be in Slytherin like his father's family, and yet here he is: a new lion.
03. As Above 
Taking an early morning break from the wild Gryffindor Common Room, Bastille heads out to the Quidditch Pitch and finds Slytherin Alexx Séverin out practicing. 
04. Nature Does Not Hurry ☆
Bastille bumps into fellow lion Evelynn Decipio in the Common Room and joins her on her Errand for Professor MacTavish.

Bastille is generally open to interaction in any open threads that he joins. Most of his relationships will be developed organically and IC, but feel free to send an Owl if you want to set up a thread or plot. Any ideas pertaining to future plots, working together on tasks, just trying out their dynamic in a thread, or backstory weaving are welcome! Bast is pretty flexible and I'm happy to consider anything when it comes to working out his social dynamics.
