Juniper knows she’s weird. Not dangerously weird, but weird enough. Weird like collecting all the dead bugs in the cottage and pinning them to the wall in her room. Weird like wishing something mildly terrible would happen; a flood, or a giant carnivorous dinosaur attack, just to liven things up a bit, and so she could show everyone what she’s really made of.

Although a little self-conscious about it, Juniper actually treasures her weirdness. If it weren’t for being slightly weird, she would be insufferably boring. She’s average enough as things stand: average height, average weight, plain brown hair, pale skin, a slightly prominent nose. Her most remarkable characteristic is her large, observant eyes and a bad habit of staring.

To be fair, she hasn’t had many companions her own age. It’s been a lonely, if otherwise idyllic childhood, and Juniper is used to entertaining herself with her over-active imagination. Raised by her muggle mother and their employer, Ms. McGriff, she was the only child in a small stone cottage in rural Scotland. Ms. McGriff is the property owner, residing over a large, 5-bedroom stone house, a cluster of 4 other small stone cottages, and the surrounding 25 acres of forest and highlands. Here, the three run a Bed & Breakfast for income. Juniper’s mother does the bulk of the cooking, cleaning and chores, with a daydreamy and distracted Juniper as her helper. As such, Juniper has had an exceptional amount of responsibility for her age, but also an unusual amount of independence and free-reign. When not busy with chores, she’s usually somewhere exploring the grounds by herself, or reading books in a hiding spot. She reads anything and everything she can get her hands on, but particularly loves fantasy and adventure.

Her wandering mind needs a lot of room to maneuver, and Juniper has learned how to win herself the necessary space. Juniper excels at going unnoticed. Being noticed means chores, and chores often lead to more chores, or worse, entertaining. Juniper hates being asked to entertain guests… usually its “small talk” or games or being asked to play the piano. Her real talent is evasion. She can blend into the background in almost any situation. She is excellent at moving through a crowded room without drawing attention to herself. She can sometimes seemingly disappear when she’s been singled out or made the center of attention. Maybe it’s her average, unremarkable looks. Maybe it’s her quiet nature. Maybe it’s a little bit of magic, too.

Juniper’s mother is a busy-body and a social butterfly. She’s wonderful at what she does; charming a rotating cast of characters from abroad, preparing them meals and tidying up after them. She’s been doing this for years; she immigrated from the United States sometime during her pregnancy with Juniper and has been working for Ms. McGriff ever since. As a mother, she’s loving and affectionate, but also short-tempered and evasive. Juniper knows almost nothing about her mother’s past. She’s never met any extended family, or known precisely where in the United States her mother is from. She’s never known her father and has cautiously never inquired about him; both because she senses it’s an unhappy topic and because she prefers to fabricate her own backstory, making things more interesting, and altering it to suit her current mood.

When Juniper was nine, her mother underwent a sudden and disturbing change. Normally charming, confident, and happy-go-lucky, she suddenly became brooding, confused and reclusive. Although always a hot-tempered person, she had a series of bitter outbursts that were extreme. After much pleading a bargaining, she finally agreed to see a doctor. But after a grueling series of tests, treatments and medications, she only seemed to get worse faster. Finally her mother, still in her 30’s, was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's. She was soon moved into hospice care, where doctors continue to puzzle over her bizarre symptoms.

Then came the OWL from Hogwarts. Juniper was once more blindsided. Ms. McGriff, on the other hand, was remarkably un-phased. She assured Juniper she'd look out for her mother and encouraged her to accept. Still reeling from her mother's diagnosis and all the related upheaval, Juniper found herself momentarily unable to act. She couldn't imagine leaving at a time like this, but then again, her mother was almost already gone. She couldn't imagine staying, either.
